'Great player': LFC plan summer move for €25m Madrid flop. Bad news for Allen...?

Liverpool have reportedly stepped-up their interest in Valencia attacking midfielder Dani Parejo, who is allegedly on the club's wish-list for the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to reports today:

* Liverpool are still interested in signing Parejo, but face competition from Atletico Madrid.

* Parejo has a €25m release clause in his contract.

In February, reports in Spain claimed that Brendan Rodgers is 'impressed' with Parejo's performances this season, and soon after, Spanish Newspaper Super Deporte claimed that:

* Barry Hunter, LFC's Chief Scout, ran the rule over Parejo during Los Che's 2-1 victory over Granada.

* Valencia are aware of the interest, but are determined to keep the Parejo at the club.

Some info about 24-year old Parejo:

- Current contract expires in 2016.
- Cost Valencia €6m in 2011.
- A product of Real Madrid's youth academy.
- Flopped in the Real senior team, and made only 5 apps.
- 43 appearances for various Spain youth teams.
- 18 apps for QPR in 2008 (No goals)

- Can play defensive or attacking midfield.
- 87% passing accuracy this season.
- 2007: Won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with Spain.
- 2011: Part of Spain's UEFA European Under-21 Championship winning team.

- When Madrid sent Parejo on loan, it so annoyed club legend Alfredo di Stefano that he refused to watch the club's reserves (!)

Parejo's stats

* 2011-12: 0 goals/1 assist in 27 apps.
* 2012-13: 2 goals/6 assists in 36 apps.
* 2013-14: 6 goals/7 assists in 46 apps.
* TOTALS: 8 goals/14 assists in 109 apps.
* Goal every 13.6 apps | Assist every 7.7 apps
* Goal/Assist every 4.9 games.

With respect, this is hardly inspiring stuff, and certainly not worth €25m (IMO). Parejo predominantly plays as a midfield playmaker/attacking midfielder for Valencia, and if this is the best he can do, I doubt he'd be able to improve on this in the Premier League.

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque is, however, convinced that Parejo is top class. In April, he raved:

"[Parejo] came to Valencia as a great player and now he is playing very well. He's one of the team's strongest players"

One thing seems certain: if LFC spend big bucks on midfielders like Parejo, then Joe Allen's chances in the first team will become even more limited.

  1. Haven't seen too much of him but judging by our squad I don't think that we should be considering potential signings as replacements for current squad members, but Lucas hasn't come back as good as he was. Hendo has been brilliant and badly missed in recent games

    We will have a lot of games to play, and may not get as lucky with injuries again

    Any weight in Lallana rumours? He is 1/4 to join Liverpool

    Who could we sign as a real leader at the back? Sakho is erratic at best, Skrtel has been good, but he's not the main leader we need. It needs to be someone vocal, with good English

    If we had Kompany, I strongly feel we'd have the league tied up a few games ago

  2. Juan Iturbe. Ivan Rakitic. And World class defender or two.
    That would do me fine.

  5. He is a kind of deep lying midfield playmaker that is really good at reading the game winning the ball back then bringing the more advanced attackers into play with his vision. He is basically a younger Alonso same kind of midfielder and plays the similar role as Alonso hence why his goal tally doesn't seem great. I think the reason he is very highly rated is due to his intelligence in the midfield reading the game and as result brakes up a lot of opponents attacks then quick to start counter attacks. My opinion an upgrade on joe allen and even tho Hendo has been brilliant id say upgrade on him too.

    Noooooooooooooooooooo!

    We don't need this guy.

    Mateo Kovacic has to be a target. We should also put in a cheeky bid for Hazard inviting him to come and play football.

  7. There is no way Liverpool will be signing this player. It should be noted that Illori is on loan at Granada. Our scout will have been watching Illori, not some decidedly below avarage midfielder who nobody has heard of.

  8. he scored a goal against madrid, and hit the bar still, was not so great!
    even in that match feghuoli made two assists and had an overall more positive impact. he is my transfer pick of the valencia. he has made some big contributions against big teams this season

    RB: M Kelly(23) DM: L Leiva(27) AM: L Alberto(21) RW: O Assaidi(25)

    FD: I Aspas(26) FD: F Borini( 22)

    4 Attacking players:

    I Rakitic(25) should be brought this summer for £16-20M as CM

    I Munian(21) Of A Bilbao or A Lallana(25) Of Southampton should be brought to club for £15-£18M as AM

    Y Konoplyanka(25) Of Dnipro for £14-£16M as LW / LWF

    L Remy(27) Of QPR for £8-£12M as FD

  10. Whoever we get it surely must be a step up from Allen, most expensive average player in the Premiership.
