Liverpool continue to be linked with a summer move for Benfica midfielder Lazar Markovic, and reports over the weekend claim that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is preparing a 'massive bid' for the Serbian attacker.
In March, Liverpool's Chief Scout watched 20-year-old Markovic during Serbia's 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland, and according to Sunday's Mirror:
"Liverpool are bidding to beat Chelsea in the £20million chase for Lazar Markovic.
"He has been on the Kop radar since he was a kid. Brendan Rodgers wants to land the Benfica wide man in a massive deal"
Liverpool considered signing Markovic - nicknamed 'the Butterfly' - in 2012, but were reportedly 'scared off' by the excessive price tag.
Soon after, the The Daily Mail claimed that LFC were one of a number of interested clubs:
"Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan have all been negotiating with Partizan, who want a deal which eventually rises to around £14m based on appearances"
Unfortunately for the Reds, £12m-rated Markovic is a massive Chelsea fan, and has his heart set on a move to Stamford Bridge, as he revealed recently:
"Chelsea [is] my dream. I had all the pictures on my wall at home back to when they had Gianfranco Zola. And any time they are on TV I try to watch them. Chelsea are the best".
Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is a big fan of his fellow countryman, and in February, he told O Jogo:
“He [Markovic] will mature and then he'll be unstoppable. It was great to have played with this fantastic kid for six months.”
Chelsea are overloaded with attacking midfielders, and with Oscar, Willian, Salah, Hazard, Schurrle etc in the squad, the chances of Markovic making a dent are practically nil. If he wants to go and sit on the bench for three years - or join the legions of other youngsters out on loan - then he should definitely choose Stamford Bridge.
The situation is slightly better at Liverpool. On the attacking midfielder front, Liverpool only really have Henderson, Sterling, and Coutinho as viable first-team options, and with Champions League football beckoning next season, there's plenty of scope for increased competition.
Stats for this season:
* 7 goals/0 assists in 32 apps.
No assists for an attacking midfielder? Not great, but he's only 20 right now, and has the potential to improve that side of his game. £20m is a laughable fee, though.

I would say we should go for Reus or Kroos or Draxler or Isco or Rakitic or somebody of that ilk who can make an impact so great that they can hit the ground firing on all cylinders for us in the attacking department.
ReplyDeleteCoentrao is one of the best LBs available who we should definitely for too.
We should now go for the cream layer rather than anything else because that is what is required for us to go on to the next level as our squad is already punching above its weight.
Such buys should be avoided and only proven players should be who we should go for.
Sounds like he will go to Chelsea if anywhere.
ReplyDeleteHe is big fan, has a fellow country man there already to help persuade him.
If he is £20 million, I don't think its worth it.
I watched the Spurs Benfica game and was impressed by this lad. Turns very quickly and is lightning. Not sure about the reported price like. So Rodgers was at that game hey. Perhaps there are a couple of players in the Benfica side we are interested in.
ReplyDeleteAnd a great chairman in Bill ..... can't wait to knock em out of CL next season :-)
ReplyDeleteFor sure but watching it over I've changed me mind and now think it was a pen
ReplyDeleteDon't they have to reach at least the quarter finals for that?
ReplyDeletejamie
ReplyDeletewhat do you think about lfc signing shaqiri, konoplayanka and luke shaw for the 60m we might be given?
shaqiri - we only have one real winger in sterling and he is very talented , rodgers wanted salah he is a good alternative
kono- rodgers wanted him before very versatile as well
luke shaw - left back si priority and we need marquee signing
theese three would be perfect , liverpool might still need one more striker or competition for skrtel
rodrigo and martin hitnerburg would be perfect but thoose two positions rae optional
imagine this squad:
ReplyDeletemignolet,johnson,skrtel,sakho,shaw,sterling,gerrard,henderson,coutinho,suarez,sturridge
bench: jones,agger,flanagan,allen,lucas,shaqiri,konoplayanka .
shaqiri,kono and shaw are priority
No human is REALLY a Chelski fan. Not really. They might like the color blue or like the idea of London...but nobody who cares about this game can be a Chelski fan...and if they think they are, then we don't need them.
ReplyDeleteGreat thing about this win, is Man United are no longer considered Defending Champions!!!!
ReplyDeleteHuge buzz today knowing that Man United can no longer be considered Defending Champions! 12 million yes! How does Chelsea beat the FFP when they buy players and then loan them out straight away? Installments?
ReplyDeleteI do agree it was a clear foul I just think looking at the way he went to catch it that he would probably have dropped it but obviously we will never know for sure. At least it did not matter that is unless it all comes down to goal difference........now I've said it that means it won't happen.
ReplyDeleteFrom your mouth to God's ear
ReplyDeleteI say fake our interest and drive his price up for chelksi. Then go for our real targets.
ReplyDeleteCoentrao any day. I also agree that this guy doesn't have pace and wouldn't suite our style of play
ReplyDeleteNice one for this post mate. Studges an absolute legend!
ReplyDeleteVery uninspiring video. This guy looks very average to me and it looks as if their playing in reserve games or something.
