Despite the amazing success this season of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, Liverpool are seemingly on the lookout for another striker, and the latest player on the radar is swiss star Michael Frey.
With Iago Aspas almost certainly on the way out, and Fabio Borini's future far from secure, the Reds may need at least one new striker, and according to reports today:
"Liverpool are watching Michael Frey with a view to a £5m summer bid.
"Reds scouts have [watched] the striker four times since January".
Some info about Frey, who plays for Swiss side Young Boys, whose home ground is the unfortunately name Wankdorf Stadium:
* 19 years old and 6'2.
* Current contract expires in June 2016.
* Borussia Monchengladbach and Juventus also interested.
* 7 goals/2 assists in 38 apps for Young Boys.
* 85% passing accuracy this season.
Liverpool fans may remember Frey from last season's Europa League. The Reds played Young Boys twice in the group stage (5-3 away; 2-2 at Anfield), and Frey featured in both games. The youngster enjoyed playing against LFC, and in a recent interview, he enthused:
"In the same year [2012] I made my debut in the Europa League and was happy about my efforts against Liverpool FC, which is a legendary club"
When asked in the same interview about his goals for future, Frey added:
"To establish myself at a big foreign club. That's what I think at the moment. I want to just continue to evolve"
It's good to see Rodgers targeting young strikers for next season, and like Josip Drmic (also currently linked with the club) Frey matches the profile of the kind of striker Liverpool should (IMO) be targeting. He'll into the pecking order at Anfield, and won't expect to play every game.

I love seeing Young Boys playing at Wankdorf. I always tell my wife that is my dream to go watch Young Boys, live in the flesh and get that Wankdorf experience. Weirdly she always just sobs.
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about this guy, so don't expect anything valuable from this comment.
Don't always agree with you jk but I do when it comes to the type of striker we should be targeting and this boy along with Drmic are the type of players we should be looking at. Still not totally given up on borini either
ReplyDeleteIs it just for me or does this video appear, like someone is jerking, off for everyone?
ReplyDeleteAnyway this player doesn't convince in highlights that are supposed to show his qualities or finishing. I don't think this guy has pace (Vital for our style of play).
Very diplomatic JK, the unfortunately named Wankdorf stadium, nearly choked when I read that :)
ReplyDeleteDont think the club needs to be chasing wankdorf young boys damn i cant stop laughing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it all depends on who we get. I have no issue Rodgers making a decision if he thinks he can get better use from someone else. I just think there is something more to Aspas that what most have seen. He got goals and assists for Celta, not just a few tap ins and penalties. Those touches and interplay you saw resulted in a lot of creative results for his previous team and I'd love to see that develop a bit more. That's obviously what Rodgers saw too and that ability hasn't disappeared.
ReplyDeleteAspas was always second to Suarez and he'll keep being in that role so sure, if we bank on Suarez playing every game then Aspas will be a luxury on the bench. They play the same role, the same kind of game, so when Luis is fit you don't need two of those kinds of guys on the pitch. I just don't agree with the negativity around having an arguably quality player on the bench not getting game time because the guy he's competing with is having world-beating form. It's the kind of problem you want to have. The problem for Aspas is that you just never sub out Luis, even if he seems to be having an off game. If it was anyone else then maybe he'd had a better shot.
Plenty of good strikers develop late in their careers. Borini has the raw talent so maybe this is what he had to do, get a year of tough football under his belt before coming back to Liverpool to be "refined" a bit more. Rodgers will want to take him back for another year at least, work on his game in a team that has a bit more attacking flair than Sunderland.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to Yesil?
ReplyDeleteAgger in 2011: "I still have three years left on my contract but the decision if I play or not, is not mine. If I don’t play and I am free of injuries then I have no reason to stay on. I know I have the level to play at this club. So if I am not going to play and I have to sit out for an extended time then it is of course not interesting for me to stay."
ReplyDeleteSkrtel, 2013: "I have not had any specific offers but if some should come and they interest me, I would probably consider it seriously."
This is not uncommon.
Aspas was signed for £7 million and pretty sure we can recoup that if we had to sell him. If we do lose on the deal then it will be minimal. His wages are also low so it is not like he has been hemorrhaging the wage bill. Another striker in the price range of Aspas would have had the same difficulty to get a starting place. If we had signed a player in the class of Diego Costa then they would have played a much bigger part.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what difference a hungry inexperienced striker of 18-21 would have made sitting on the bench. That would just stagnate their development.
He is injured and has been for most of his time at the club.
ReplyDeleteShe deserves a medal on so many levels
ReplyDeleteYou buy cheap and you take a gamble, some will work out some wont. Until the player is at the club you never really know how he will adapt.
ReplyDeleteHe obviously hasnt done enough in training to prove him worthy of a starting berth etc. Sell him on, get a couple of million, its no major loss.
We will have these signings that dont work out as we are gambling by buying cheaper players who might, make it rather than spashing the cash.
La Liga is on in the mornings, I've seen what Aspas can do. I don't have a problem with the player. He can definitely play wide left too, but Sturridge, Coutinho, Sterling, Henderson and even Moses have been preferred there this season, that tells us something.
ReplyDeleteI've maintained all season that Aspas (and Alberto) were needless signings. Rodgers created a want for the squad when there was no demand. As a Rodgers favourite, I'm sure Borini would have had a good opportunity this season, especially as he has remained fit. Why could he have not started the 6 games Suarez sat out? Instead, Borini was let go and it's clear as day the temporary replacement was Aspas. It's unfair on him, but Rodgers knew he would have a very limited role within the squad this season, and no role at all next season.
Every game I'm crying out for Aspas to get 20 or so minutes, but it never happens. Moses gets a go instead of him or Rodgers sits on 1 or 2 changes. Aspas may be a good player, but Ibe could have sat on the bench all season, and then at least with him there is a specific reason to throw him on for the last few minutes of a match.
It's not fresh news, it's more than a few days old. It's not even accurate news £9m? Every reputable source has the figure somewhere between £7.5-£8.2m. Not to mention Alberto has at least 1 assist despite limited game time. I always forget how poor this site is and should hide it from the links Newsnow throws up. Even Borini and Moses have done somewhat of a job at times (admittedly not the best of jobs). So honestly I don't see the point of this article or this site. Thankfully this'll be the last bit of "news" I read on here.
ReplyDeleteThe guy need patient, we all know age is not on his side. But he should have lean dat BR will use d team giving him result no time for error like Moses
ReplyDeleteI've watched Diego Costa with much intrigue on and off this season, basically whenever I've been able to catch a La Liga game in the morning. Yes, he scores goals and he has great technique, but he is arguably worse than Suarez in regards to his on field antics. One match I was watching, he just dove all over the place. Another match, and he was in the refs face for the whole 90 mins, crying about every single decision. I've been surprised with the way Suarez has conducted himself on the pitch recently, and I think most people would just not have the patience for Costa.
ReplyDeleteUnrelated, but Mkhitaryan he been quite inconsistent, it's his biggest criticism in Germany. Still, quite a great player on his day. These two, and others, aren't all they were made out to be. I think missing out on these two guys was for the best, despite their specific and measurable contribution for their respective clubs this season.
I don't mind hearing this from players, really. It's far preferable to the various codes for "I want to be paid more money" that players use on these occasions: "It is my dream to play for Monaco"; "Liverpool is a beautiful club but I need to think about Iago Aspas"; "There are things I cannot talk about, but let's just say it's time for Iago Aspas to move on" etc etc etc.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, is he sounds like he would just be another Aspas or Borinin.
ReplyDeleteWhy waste another 5 mil on a bit part player? May as well just keep who we have. Surely they aren't that different.
I'm not really sure what he expected. Suarez and Sturridge are always going to be first choice.
ReplyDeleteIt must be frustrating for a player. Maybe the best option is for him to leave.
Suarez was worse than Costa but with time the club has managed to bring Suarez down to earth.
ReplyDeleteI agree. We certainly wouldn't be in the same position. Not even close. The season could possibly have turned into a disaster with those two out. But i still feel we'd be closer to the fourth place with Aspas than we'd be with a Sanogo or a Rhodes and i rate them both and would love to have one of them together with Aspas as back-up.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of him when we bought him, still don't know much about him now, what i have seen, he's just not done enough, specially now we're at the top end of the table, it will be more difficult for him. I don't believe we need a young inexperienced striker as back up though, i would much prefer at least one top striker to compete with SaS for their place. When Suarez was banned and Sturridge was out injured, did Aspas replace them? no, we played one up front with five in the middle, if we did have another top striker on the books, it would just have been a case of like for like.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Sturridge you legend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I299Xrryhbc
ReplyDeleteNext season he could be playing more games with all the other fringe players..... as LFC would have more games than this year plus u can't risk SAS with every game esp. with the UEFA games.
ReplyDeleteIbe and Wilson will get some games next year and Teixeira, all 3 have as much potential as Sterling, then there's Suso to rotate with Cout's and the possible return of Borini for 3rd striking option then throw Sinclair in as 4th choice i really hope our main signing is a left back and top quality central midfielder but only one thats better than Lucas to improve the starting 11... 2 world class signings and the rest can come through the under 21's system Illori can add depth at centreback with Wisdom and even behind that Lloyd Jones looks immense for his age, really exciting times ahead for the redmen Throw Rossiter in in a few years and some others obviously not all at once but the supply line is there... reminds me of a similar time at utd but when weve won the league 10 times ill make comparisons then lol
ReplyDeletebest football club in the world!
ReplyDeleteBefore I read the comments the first thing to spring to mind was is this guy being so negative yet again.... ok I understand his point, but this is football and also this is Liverpool who we are talking who don't have the millions on millions as city or Chelsea have! So we have to take chances on certain players... Some work out, couthino, sturridge, and others don't! it's part and parcel of football you can't get every one of them right. In fact I would like to ask a question instead of giving Brendan criticism can you name me a manager who gets over 90% of his transfer correct?
ReplyDeleteI dont think its JK's fault about looking at the negative side if there are players unhappy in the dressing room. I understand Aspas' frustrations but simple fact is he isn't good enough. Go back to Spain.
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers needs to ship out these 8 dead wood or injury prone players, plus a world class gk B Rodgers no longer wants or trusts and the two pathetic waste loan players who were brought to club this summer= 11 players need to be shown out door this summer:
ReplyDeleteGK B Jones
Why do you print such rubbish... I have seen the interview Aspas did with the Spanish press/women at Melwood, and he didn't say I quit, niether did he blast anyone, nor did he demand a transfer... he simply responded to the question " would you consider going out on loan" with "I'm not 20 anymore, I can't go out on loan and explode, I MAY have to find a club that suits me and Isuit them to try and get my career back on track..... Not quite the drama and indignation you claim... Your version of events is nothing more than sensationalism and pure lazy and misleading... you should be embarrassed typing such rubbish...
ReplyDeletetelling the truth would be a start, rather than making a story fit your deluded opinion of what a fan should be...
ReplyDeleteWell all it tells me is that he is a player that has a poor attitude. Stirling was dropped, worked hard, now a first team player. Flanno , was dropped worked hard, is now a first team player, hendo dropped, worked hard, now a first team player, Skrtel dropped, worked hard now a first team player. getting where this is going??? if aspas thinks he can get into a team just because he played every game for his previous club, unlucky. if you want to be the best, then you need to dig in and work hard for every moment you get. it happened with man utd fringe players for years under ferguson. The only way you get the best out of most players is ensuring their is adequate competition to continually test their resolve. If Aspas, has had enough he will be shipped out and replaced with another striker who is gonna ensure Sturridge and Suarez keep playing good, other wise he will be hot on their heels and will try and take his chance. I think this is why Shelvey got sold. there was media talks of him demanding his chance, and to be fair he was better than hendo at the time in my opinion but where hendo got his head down, and worked hard, shelvey protested. All in all BR may have wasted money but he has spent an average 70m net got us from 7th to a title challenge. David Moyes has spent 70m on two players and taken Man utd from title winners to obscurity!!!
ReplyDeletehi this isnt the way i interpereted the interview
ReplyDeletelol.you interpreted the interview wrong mate.watch again maybe
ReplyDeleteif we get champ league i think he'll stay
ReplyDeletei agree thisis not accurate. I just watched the interview and he said if he was to go on loan he would rather leave. But he didn't say he wanted to leave
ReplyDeleteYou should have Inserted "IF" into your story,, he stated that IF he was to leave it would be permanant,, huge difference to the way you have writen the story... I saw the interview and he never once said I wasnt to leave........
ReplyDeleteFacts are what matter, not fantasy...
he he! I saw that aswell... naughty naughty..
ReplyDelete8 pts to guarentee CL... He's staying
ReplyDeletehe didn't
ReplyDeleteAgain, you will probably delete this comment like the last, but let me point out some things to you -
ReplyDeleteBorini isn't the same as Aspas. Borini was the young, up and coming talent you said we should have signed. As it turned out he needed a bit more experience in PL, and as the pressure was on Brendan to deliver results it's time we can't afford to give players. They either learn or they go home.
Aspas was older and more experienced but unfortunately he cannot hack the physicality of the PL because he is too lightweight. If we had gone for another Borini and one of the main strikers had been injured for a stretch an inexperienced striker wouldn't have cut it I'm afraid.
Who gives a shit about Aspas anyway?
Why would I delete this comment? Your last post got deleted because you focused more on sniping against me than the actual football-related point.
