Along with Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho is one of Brendan Rodgers' few genuine transfer success stories, and despite some shaky form this season, the Brazilian has emerged as an important part of the Reds' march to the title. It's still hard to believe that Inter Milan let Coutinho leave so easily (and so cheaply), and in a new interview, LFC's creative maestro has shed some more light on his time at the San Siro.
Prior to his move to Anfield, Coutino worked briefly under ex-Reds boss Rafa Benitez, and the Brazilian credits the current Napoli boss with turning his game around. He noted:
"At Inter, Rafa Benitez changed my mentality. He made me more of a team player and encouraged me to move the ball more quickly and get more involved. Now, with Liverpool, I am moving faster still and thinking even more quickly"
This is not the first time Coutinho has praised Benitez. In November, he told The Telegraph:
“I had a good relationship with Rafa. He was prepared to give me opportunities straight away. He was always very considerate towards me and gave me a lot of confidence. He cared a lot about all the younger players at Inter.
For 6 months under Benitez (at the age of 18), Coutinho made 15 appearances for Inter, 8 of which were starts against team such as Juventus, and Spurs (in the Champions League). Things changed, though, when the Spaniard left in December 2010. Coutinho made only FOUR appearances for the rest of the season, and was an unused substitute on TWELVE separate occasions.
To be honest, Benitez's interest in young players is a little surprising because, at Liverpool, he rarely gave teenage prospects any kind of consistent chance in the first team. There were no Raheem Sterlings or Andre Wisdoms under Rafa, but maybe that was because the young players in LFC's academy at the time were not good enough?
Ironically, however, before he left Anfield, Benitez signed three top-quality teenage prospects: Jonjo Shelvey, Sterling, and Suso. Shelvey may no longer be at the club, but all three were excellent signings, and Suso and (especially) Sterling have the talent to make an impact at Liverpool for years to come.
Coutinho also revealed that his trickery on the field once led to him being threatened by one of his Inter team-mates. During a training session in 2010, Coutinho nutmegged Italian defender Marco Materazzi, who took it badly. He recalled:
"When I got back into the dressing room, the masseur said he would buy me snacks for the rest of the week if I did it again. Materazzi told me he would put me in hospital. He wasn’t impressed"
That sounds just like Materazzi, who was aptly nicknamed 'the Butcher', and is easily one of the most reviled footballers of the last fifteen years. All I can say is it's a good job Luis Suarez didn't play for Inter; with the sheer number of nutmegs he tries, he would've been in the hospital every week.

The academy is Benitez's legacy to the fans - there would be no Stirling but for him.
ReplyDeleteI'm convinced Suarez can't be hospitalised.
ReplyDeleteGive me a crack at him, and I'll disprove that theory.
ReplyDeleteRafa is history as far as Liverpool Fc is concerned. But he will never be forgotten
ReplyDeleteWe bought sterling from QPR
ReplyDelete...and he progressed in our academy.
ReplyDeletehahahaha jamie he would have been in the hospital for nutmeging
ReplyDelete5 nutmegs later and you might be in the hospital yourself
ReplyDeleteHe's a cybernetic organism - living tissue over a metal endoskeleton
ReplyDeleteNo match for me. I'm a mimetic polyalloy. Advanced prototype.
ReplyDeleteI heard Suarez was made of adamantium? Strongest metal alloy known to man and also has natural regeneration abilities like Wolverine. The man can't be stopped.
ReplyDeleteWho's Rafa?
ReplyDeleteThey also knew that Azpilicueta was going to make a mistake late in the game and Altidore would slip after making contact with his left leg while sliding and leading with his right... Gotta hand it to the FA... caper of the century!!!!
ReplyDeleteLuis was actually severely injured in that collision vs Norwich.. He recovers THAT quickly hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThree words:
ReplyDeleteFurnacey lava pit.
Rafa's legacy is that every Liverpool fan now has a goatee. Just look.
ReplyDeleteJaimie no offense but Suarez would kill you.
ReplyDeleteYeah apart of our history...
ReplyDeleteDon't think so mate, Suarez has people like Materazzi for breakfast ;).
ReplyDeleteI really hope we have a buy-back with Shelvey. He's getting the game time he needs at Swansea and in a couple of years I'm sure he'll be top class. Just watch his goal against Aston Villa today.
ReplyDeleteNo, they probably weren't good enough. Considering that he was one of the architects behind Liverpool's now thriving academy, I think there is enough evidence to suggest that he does value youth. But by the same token, he won't just play them for the sake of it- they need to be good enough.
ReplyDeleteAnd Materazzi is an utter c***. Is it any wonder why Zidane couldn't help himself?
ReplyDeletesmh...Rafael Benitez
ReplyDeleteonly Suarez can defeat Suarez. Get Mirrors.
ReplyDeleteBesides Materazzi and Terry, are there anymore hated centre-backs?
ReplyDeleteWell unlike Chelsea and City who are cheats you dont deserve to be scrutinized in that way.
ReplyDeleteMost fans did think spurs spent well at the start of the season so i suppose its the shock of seeing this seasons failure more than anything else.
Lets just hope the cheats dont prosper this season.
We should remember all our past managers with fondness, even if the likes of Hodgson and Souness didn't exactly do a great job. Rafa did well for the first 4-5 years it just fell apart in the last year.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed Rodgers would say that for political reasons. He is usually media savvy and avoids giving opponents locker room news clipping material. Truth is, he is accurate and everyone knows it but why give anyone an inspiration......sports teams and athletes have long memories...
ReplyDeleteIt was one interview Jaimie! His actual answer contains the words pressure! I am not sure why that is difficult to understand. Watch the actual interview it is very clear the theme of the questioning and his response to it.
ReplyDeleteMan U is
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you got the joke?
ReplyDeleteYes that's true. Benitez is a huge factor in our now thriving academy.
ReplyDeleteCouthino the little wizard. Only a coward and ego centric individual will threaten another footballer for something small as nutmeg. But unfortunately these morons still exist in the 21st century.
ReplyDeleteFerdinand
ReplyDeleteNot only that, but threaten a team mate.
ReplyDeletePeople get way too serious. I was given a minute long vicious spray of profanity, by a little angry chihuahua calling me a c***, during a game on the weekend...just because I tugged his shirt!
There is an amount of competitiveness and machismo in the testosterone fueled game we love so much. Probably too much pride too. We are a complicated ape.
ReplyDeleteyou stay by yeah boyfriend, where it's safer, that's a good lad!
ReplyDeleteyes, after i read it again... smh at myself
ReplyDeleteAgainst with Chelsea....PC10 must using high skill dribble to attract defender to open the game. When chelsea parking the bus,LFC players cannot using through pass or crossing ball.11 chelsea players park the bus so what else you can do about this?We need change the technical of playing.LFC must used dribbler players.
ReplyDeleteMarco Materazzi is bigest cocksuucking bully aroun! I'm glad whan Zidane head butt the cunt, but Zidane shoud have machete him insted in the head, cos he is bigest satanic cunt in world.
ReplyDeleteFucking cunt!!
ReplyDeleteJohn Terry is in bed with your mum, sister and daughter as we speak u silly twat cuntos
ReplyDelete
