Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has once again named his strongest attacking line-up for today's potential title decider with Manchester City.
Many expected either Lucas or Allen to get the nod in a bid help out Gerrard in midfield, but as I hoped, Rodgers has nixed that possibility and gone with Coutinho and Sterling instead.
TEAM: Mignolet, Johnson, Flanagan, Sakho, Skrtel, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge
SUBS: Jones, Toure, Agger, Aspas, Moses, Allen, Lucas
MAN CITY: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Clichy, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, Nasri, Silva, Dzeko
SUBS: Pantilimon, Lescott, Milner, Negredo, Kolarov, Garcia, Aguero
-------------- Mignolet
Johnson -- Skrtel -- Sakho -- Flanagan
--------- Gerrard -- Hendo
------------- Coutinho
---- Sterling --------- Suarez
------------- Sturridge
Daniel Agger is fit, but Sakho is chosen ahead of the Dane, and that's probably the right decision, for a few reasons:
* Sakho played well against West Ham, and deserves to keep his place.
* Agger is coming back from injury, so may not be 100% match-fit.
* Agger vs. Aguero is a bit of a mis-match when it comes to speed, and the Dane has been beaten for speed quite a few times this season.
* Agger has also been muscled off the ball in aerial battles a few times, and if Dzeko plays, Sakho is stronger and more suited to that kind of physical battle.
Sadly, Vincent Kompany is fit to start the game, but if he's sore from his injury, he may be a tad tentative in the game, which may help out SAS.
Pre-match analysis:
Jan Molby
"I have no doubt that this Liverpool FC team will deliver against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday. I just think Brendan Rodgers will go for it. We’ve been successful all season playing an attacking brand of football so why change now?"
Jamie Redknapp
"I can’t see it being anything other than an open, attacking game. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have only managed to win one of their last 16 at Anfield, while Liverpool have won 10 of their last 16 there. For me, that points towards a hugely important win for Liverpool on Sunday. Liverpool are in the ascendency and I reckon they’ll just take it 2-1"
Mark Lawrenson
"Brendan Rodgers will not change his approach against Manchester City because this is a game that Liverpool really need to win if they are going to lift the title. Because of that, I have a sneaky feeling it might end up being a draw".
Dietmar Hamann
"Manuel’s Pellegrini’s selection could be decisive. If they start with Fernandinho and Toure in midfield, with Samir Nasri, Silva and Jesus Navas in front, Liverpool will expose them. If Swansea could find gaps in behind them, imagine what it will be like with Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling in that space?"
City are indeed starting with Fernandinho, Toure, Navas, Nasri, and Silva, so let's hope Didi is right. My prediction: 2-2, or 3-2 to LFC.

I'm extremely confident for this one. Don't ask me why, I just am.
ReplyDelete3-1 to LFC
what happened to Kompany urgh whatever... COME ON U RED MEN!!
ReplyDeleteCOME ON GUYS!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTo be the BEST you have to beat the best, come on Liverpool unleash the voice of Anfield...cheers
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I don't feel nervous for this one and that makes me fearful. But I believe we can make this giant stride today, which is potentially the most significant day for us in decades to come and which will be remembered by my grand children. 2-1 for us with Gerrard and Sturridge to score
ReplyDeleteFire Fire! Let's breathe fire boys!!!
ReplyDeleteI've only started getting nervous around now, just because the game has almost started and it's a natural feeling. But throughout the day, I've been surprisingly calm.
ReplyDeleteIt was Soldado.....SALDADO that blew Agger for pace, gave him a 5 yard head start too. Aggers game is now only suited to Italy or Spain where the pace is slower.
ReplyDeleteAs for the biggie, my hopes at the start of the season was for fourth. I didnt even think we'd get that after seeing Tottenhams spending. The rest of the season is a bonus, the team have already done us proud this season. Time to sit back and enjoy regardless of the result. BUT WHAT A GAME IN PROSPECT!!!!
yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ReplyDelete1-0 whoooohoooooo
ReplyDeleteGuess all that overpraise must have gone to Sterling's head.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant ! What a cool head for a youngster in that situation
ReplyDeleteWe are in the driving set at mo
Toure off.....wow!
ReplyDeletemy god what a start. shame to see yaya go off.
ReplyDeleteimagine kolo yelling across the dugout, 'there is no need to be upset'
ReplyDeleteCoutino is busting peeps up! he has evolved into something much more than a number 10
ReplyDeleteyeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ReplyDeletetwoooooo yahopooooo
ReplyDeleteMy god the noise.
ReplyDeletewow that was rash!!
ReplyDeletePRESS PRESS PRESS! dont SIT SIT SIT!!!
ReplyDeleteJust shows what the noise is like at Anfield. Gerrard could not hear Mignolet shouting out his name...
ReplyDeleteOh and by the way, Sakho is looking every single penny worth what we have spent on him.
Can't believe they r giving us so much space !
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Sturridge and Suarez' form is actually pretty poor. Both look spent. Sturridge even short on confidence. He could have had three goals this half. Guess this is a difficult game for him emotionally, but still. Is it wrong to be anxious that we're not 5-0 up?
ReplyDeleteStudge isnt at the races today
ReplyDeletewow wat a save
ReplyDeletehalf time to love. Ill take that :D
ReplyDeleteMade up for earlier mistake - great header off the line by Glen
ReplyDeleteit was raheem on the line
ReplyDeletealright guys composure!!! that goal from sterling though pure CLASS luke shaw for 30mill please sterling for 80mill
ReplyDeletesterling cleared of the line I think
ReplyDeleteSterling is a little genius in the making.
ReplyDeleteYou can keep your 80 million. Sterling is going nowhere :b
ReplyDelete'in the making' yeah ill go with that. I still see him as a striker though. I think he'd be untouchable on the last man
ReplyDeletecome on ayre don't mess it up contracts galore for the summer; henderson, flannagan, sturriidge, coutinho, sterling, gerrard and mingolet just because of that save
ReplyDeleteBR has to calm down the guys we just need to keep our heads ,for god's sake we are 2-0 up a welcome break indeed .
ReplyDeletesterling the star couts has been awesome also shame about the finishing though..glen has been disappointing
ReplyDeletecalm down lads it was sterling then johnson...what a great half!!
ReplyDeleteGlen has been brilliant, the best full back on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteAnother case of Glen 'Marmite' Johnson lol
ReplyDeleteRodgers has once again got his tactics spot on. I am hoping the message at half time is to go out and punish City even further.
ReplyDeleteThey ve both had blinders
ReplyDeleteHe's made already imho
ReplyDeleteSame again guys - don't sit back on the lead !
ReplyDeleteim bouncing. I might do something spontaneous like, like put some honey in my coffee

ReplyDeletegreat win but no what about future matches now urgh hendo back for newcastle match sigh
ReplyDeleteI need a hospital..fast. Oh yeah, and......WE'RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!!!!!
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeleteoh JK WHERE R U
ReplyDeletei'm so happy and relieved i'm stoked
ReplyDeleteawesome just cant believe this guys
ReplyDeletecome on Swansea now
ReplyDeleteHow do you know it was deliberate? There was a massive huddle of players, and there was nowhere for his arm to go. Now way it was deliberate IMO. No professional of sound mind would attempt a deliberate handball *in the bx* in the last few minutes of a title decider.
ReplyDeleteahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ReplyDeleteblame moses for the build up for the red card urgh i dislike that guy sooooooooooooooooo horrible
ReplyDeleteThat look on Gerrard's face says everything!!!!! He thinks we're going to win it now! No doubt!
ReplyDeleteon ya Jaimie
ReplyDeleteGerrard made me cry! :_(
ReplyDeleteSo emotional and wotta amazing game that was!!!
gerrards reaction brought my tears
ReplyDeleteStevie Gerrard in the huddle: "THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"
ReplyDeletelove u stevie
ReplyDeleteJaimie what do you think was wrong with our front two today, one thing i can say is Suarez made a fool of himself today by doing the dirty work which has nothing to do with playing football. He could have played spoiler in this game.Anyway its been an emotional wreck and i'm glad we came on top.
ReplyDeletespecial mention for BR because his name hasn't been mentioned yet. 1 word Genius.
ReplyDeleteHow many games does Hendo miss?
ReplyDeleteGreat predicting J.K geez what a game gotta watch the replay later i couldnt sit down.
ReplyDeleteallen for hendo now?
ReplyDeleteor lucas?
ReplyDeleteThree games for a straight red. No point disputing it. It was fair.
ReplyDeleteI'd say Allen, for mobility. He'll slot into Hendo's role more naturally.
ReplyDeletewhat an epic win...YNWA
ReplyDeleteHendo had a bad touch and then there was absolutely no way that he was gonna let that city player get the ball, so he just cleaned him up. Hope that's not 3 games though? If Gerrard picks up a yellow in the next match we might be in a bit of a pickle.
ReplyDeleteGerrards good to go - he can get a few yellows now
ReplyDeletefair i just mean moses adds nothing to the game imo BR should've put in agger or lucas for me
ReplyDeleteAutomtic three-match ban for Henderson. Gerrard's doesn't have to worry about yellows now as all yellows are written off after today.
ReplyDeleteNo mention of Sakho who Rodgers was having words with on the sidelines? Come on...
ReplyDeleteWell at least Gerrard is safe. Allen will just come in for Henderson, definitely a miss for the Chelsea game though.
ReplyDeleteThat is why I love football, that is why I am liverpool fan.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I would have put Allen out on the wing as a wide midfielder where he has played previously before, and Lucas in the middle. But Moses in his natural position makes sense. If it was earlier in the season than fair enough, but since his selfish error against Hull away, I haven't had much time for the guy. He contributed today though and we won, which is all that matters.
ReplyDeleteGosh, you are so glaringly transparent it's unreal. Your agenda is obvious: trash any non-Rodgers signings and then lionise his buys, i.e. Sakho. 'Accident waiting to happen'? Skrtel was immense yet again, and has consistently been LFC's best defender this season. Sakho played okay, but he continues to be shaky on the ball, and got away with an obvious penalty decision. Seriously, you just make comments like this to further an agenda, not because you actually believe in their truth. Intellectual dishonesty once again.
ReplyDeleteCmon you Swans do it for your old boss and we will be 5 points clear tonight
ReplyDeleteoh yh new RB needed sry glen but if i was BR no new contract he just hasn't been the same for a while now
ReplyDeleteGo look at the replay. He first looks at the ball and then his his hand goes towards the ball.
ReplyDeleteIt is handball.
Johnson has played his part. IMO it would make sense to keep him around as he adds vital experience and nobody knows what's up with Kelly, and is Wisdom really that good? I doubt Flanagan will be in the first team next season. There's lots to think about re transfers.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the most important goal of the season from Coutinho. And I reckon among all the excitement and the emotion it's important to remember that all this was never part of the plan. No team has ever finished as low as 7th in the Premier League and then gone on to win the title, or get anywhere near. If we do this, i'll go down in history as the greatest ever PL win. If we don't, then it's still been remarkable.
ReplyDeleteJust brilliant. Outstanding. Incredible. Wonderful. Rodgers can use as many superlatives as he likes.
ReplyDeleteyh i know thats why i said new flanagan probably can do the job but they were brutally exposed on the flanks whole game not picking up runs after the pass was made we could've got destroyed and hoping that we make CL we can't be making errors like that against teams like barca and bayern we'll be crucified so to me new fullbacks
ReplyDeleteIs that a cheeky shot at one of the previous articles?
ReplyDeleteYep and I think Mark balanced it up by not giving him the pen later
ReplyDeleteOutstanding comment
ReplyDeleteSakho's head is *directly below* Skrtel's arm. Sakho is going in for the header, and pushes his arm upwards. How exactly is Skrtel supposed to move his arm down with someone's head pushing it up?!
ReplyDeleteThere's no point debating this issue with with you, as your will take the anti-Skrtel view purely to push your obvious pro-Sakho (and pro-Rodgers' signings) agenda. I'd rather talk to the wall.
City have some of the best attackers in the world, and in a match of 90 mins they are going to have their periods. Johnson and Flanagan for me didn't stand out as being poor. The whole team crumbled and got punished, not just the fullbacks or defenders.
ReplyDeleteI just hope Stuzza's okay!
ReplyDeleteAdam's been incredible, world class, as I say, and when you've got that kind of comment then, as I say, he's been incredible.
ReplyDeleteI challenge you to post a replay of the incident as soon as highlights are available and then we can discuss it further.
ReplyDeleteWhenever Suarez is frustrated, he reverts to type, and that happened again today. I don't think there's anything especially with SAS - they can't be world-beaters in every game; they'll have off days, and when that happens, it's important for other players to step up, which they did.
ReplyDeletefair point second half the players moved like we already had the title like ac milan in 2005 oh btw it is now impossible for tottenham to finish above us guess stealing our transfer targets hasn't really worked out for them
ReplyDeleteIt's tough for Flanno, but he'll be a better player in the long run for this experience. He's talented and has shown that he has the quality to play for the club. He should rightfully take second place behind a quality signing next season but he'll be in the squad every week and with a bit more development there will be a starting role for him again.
ReplyDeletefair point second half the players moved like we already had the title like ac milan in istanbul oh btw it is now impossible for tottenham to finish above us guess stealing our transfer targets hasn't really worked out for them
ReplyDeleteI would have axed Suarez. Yes, he got an assist, but after that all he did was dive and repeatedly give the ball away, no less than ten times! We needed composure and Rodgers could have easily made a change before we copped any goals, you could see us crumbling.
ReplyDeleteA few note:
ReplyDelete1/ Stevie you nearly made me cry too
2/ Skrtel = Immense as always
3/ When we attack we do so like a swarm of wasps
4/ A long way to go yet so lets not count our chickens
5/ SAS had a poor game but you are aloud one a season
I don't need to post the replay. The image below shows everything. Sakho is clearly going to head the ball, and the upward motion of his head propels Skrtel's arm towards the ball. Skrtel shouldn't have his arm flailing, but it's not deliberate. The idea that he would do that in the most crucial 5 minutes of the season, is just nonsense (IMO)
ReplyDeleteHe's just taking it one comment at a time, never looking beyond the next comment.
ReplyDeleteI definitely hope so but I can't see it. I think he will be extremely unlucky and not see many opportunities in the future. I am, for some reason, proud of the guy though. Just seeing his development and being a fullback myself. He adds to the heart and soul of the club.
ReplyDeleteAt least we have options and most of all BELIEF
ReplyDeleteThink Sturridge must have a muscle strain, would make sense because he seemed so slow off the mark and uncertain in his movements after the first few minutes. He has for a few games. Struck me that this is of course the first full season he''s played in his career. Suarez could use a rest but I'd still leave him on over Sturridge because Luis can contribute in different ways -- such as from set pieces -- even when he's not playing very well. He's been giving the ball away like that for a while now. The pressure nay be getting to him.
ReplyDeleteJK can you translate what Gerrard said in the huddle at the end for us?
ReplyDeleteWell that's what we do here, and really it's what this site is all about, so for me, that's how it's always been, but when you can get comments like that, well, for me he's been incredible, superb.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm being positive. He could well disappear into obscurity. But we'll have plenty of games to play next season and he's a very good option off the bench. Injury has done for a few full backs at Liverpool but he seems a bit more solid. If he stays fit he'll play a bit next season, surely.
ReplyDeleteIn the situation we found ourselves in today I think Sturridge would have been more useful on the pitch for the counter, Suarez wasn't doing anything of value after he grabbed that assist. He lost his cool and it really showed. He just gives the ball away too much though, there's a time and place for first time and risky passes.
ReplyDeleteEither will do, let them fight it out at training. It does say quite a bit about our supposed lack of depth in midfield. I don't think we'll lose anything.
ReplyDelete'Listen..this is gone. We go to Norwich..exactly the same. We go together. Come on!'
ReplyDeleteI get you but at least we had the SCS cheers mate
ReplyDeleteI must say, the minutes silence at the start was almost indescribable. I've never heard such a silent stadium, home and away fans together, not even a stray cough. That kind of respect and togetherness is nice to see. Football is great, and the match was amazing, but there are other things that will always be more important.
ReplyDeleteIt was impeccably respected, by everybody.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you on about? It is the same as me saying you have an agenda with almost all of Rodgers signings.
ReplyDelete
