After their 5-0 annihilation by Liverpool at White Hart Lane earlier this season, Spurs will be hoping to avoid a repeat scoreline at Anfield tomorrow, and with Champions League football still a mathematical possibility, the London club still have lots to play for. Reds legend Jan Molby expects Spurs to 'play a high defensive line' against Liverpool tomorrow, which he insists will 'play into LFC's hands', but he's also warned the Reds to be wary of several Spurs players, who 'on their day', can cause problems.
In his column for EuroSport this week, Molby predicted that Spurs will 'try to be aggressive' at Anfield, and singled out four players who could hurt the Reds. He observed:
"Spurs have better players than Sunderland. They have good players, and are one of the better teams in the Premier League. They have *Christian Eriksen and Emmanuel Adebayor playing well, and in Andros Townsend and Aaron Lennon...they have pace on the flanks".
Spurs will probably take heart from Liverpool's struggle to beat Sunderland on Wednesday, and Molby is right - they have much better players than Gus Poyet's team, so in theory, they should present more of a threat.
I personally don't see how Sherwood can watch replays of the Sunderland game and not be optimistic about tomorrow's match. Though it seems unlikely, if Spurs follow Sunderland's tactical plan, then they should cause the Reds problems. Given Sherwood's attacking sensibility, however, I doubt this will happen.
After Tim Sherwood took over from AVB, Adebayor smashed in ten goals in 13 games, but he hasn't scored in four games now, and hopefully his new barren spell will spill over into tomorrow's game.
Liverpool were heavily linked with Eriksen last summer, and he's proving to be Spurs' best attacking signing under AVB. The Dane has 14 goals/assists in 29 appearances for Spurs this season, which is a rate of one goal/assist every two games; Compare that with Coutinho - who has 10 goals/assists in 32 apps - and it's clear that Eriksen is doing well, and for £11m, it's money well spent.
Despite this, some LFC fans still seem to malign Eriksen, and claim that he's flopping for Spurs, which clearly isn't true. If Eriksen - who is still adapting to the Premier League (and experienced managerial change in his first season) - is a flop, what does that make Coutinho, who has already had half-a-season to adapt to English football, yet is trailing Eriksen in the goals/assists stakes?
I feel slightly nervous about tomorrow's game. In a way, Spurs have nothing to lose, whereas defeat for Liverpool could - depending on other results - end the club's title chances.
* Combined value/transfer fees = £30m.

Hope sterling plays rather than allen ... he will offer pace and speed to our counter attacking football
ReplyDeleteJaimie, please prove where some LFC fans has stated that Eriksen has flopped.
ReplyDeleteIt is more a case of overhype about eriksen as based on performances Eriksen would have made no difference to our season if we would have signed him.
Yes those players have done ok but Sherwood rarely plays Lennon & Townsend together. However I really fancy our chances against their defence - they've been awful lately and gifted some real howlers. Let's hope for more tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYou, for instance, have slated Eriksen all season, and your comment history proves that.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that Eriksen would have made 'no difference' to LFC's season is utter nonsense, especially given the fact he HAS made a difference for Spurs. Once again, your intellectual dishonest prevents you from being fair. You don't want to admit that Eriksen is playing well as it would contradict your repeated criticism of him all season.
Prove where I have said Eriksen has been a flop. Do not hide please.
ReplyDeleteEriksen has scored two more EPL goals than Coutinho this season. Big deal. Eriksen and Coutinho would have been competition for each. Who would have played more games, Coutinho or Eriksen?
Stop going off on pointless tangents. I can't be bothered to trawl through your comment history. Anyone who frequents this site will have seen your regular claims that Eriksen is not performing for Spurs.
ReplyDeleteAnd you seem to have the memory of a goldfish: I've outlined my thoughts on Coutinho/Eriksen competition already (in the recent past), so why are you asking yet another utterly pointless question?
If they follow sunderland's tactical plan, then they won't be playing wingers- Lennon and Townsend! Sunderland played 5 at the back with 2 holding mids. How about a quartet of our players for them to worry about?! Suarez, Sturrudge , Gerrard and Coutinho./Sterling

ReplyDeleteOk, Palace are 1 up against Chelsea with a few mins to go. What an opportunity this might be for us tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching. Nearly ruined by O'Keith - breathtakingly bad back pass
ReplyDeleteCrystal Palace ,You Beauty!!
ReplyDeleteI did not expect that. As usual, Chelsea's undoing is the lack of a reliable goal scorer.
ReplyDeleteGet in there!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell in Palace. Whoohoooo
ReplyDeleteMaureen will be absolutely fuming
ReplyDeleteI can think of two:
ReplyDeleteArsenal win tonight
We win tomorrow.
Tony Pulis,The Scourge of LFC may have gifted something special here..
ReplyDeletePalace fans mocking him to sit. Glorious
ReplyDeleteWe could go top tomorrow! Come on you Redmen!!!
ReplyDeleteTurns out they're a little horse after all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI mean a pygmy pony. Hahahahaha
ReplyDeleteSo gracious in defeat Mourinho. Apparently it's all the ball boy's fault. Grow up
ReplyDeleteNot performing at the level he was (unfairly) built up to be and flopping are two entirely different things.
ReplyDeleteI don't think very many L'pool fans claim Eriksen is flopping... in addition I don't really see how that's relevant unless you are just advising to not be overly cocky with this Tottenham side, which I agree with.
ReplyDeleteGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
ReplyDeletecome on arsenal
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to side with anyone in this argument, but Jaimie please remember that YOU are the professional in this situation. No matter how idiotic, or how annoying, or how stubborn, or how stupid loganfc is being, it is your job to not lose your calm. A simple "I don't care" woul've been suffice.
ReplyDeleteYes, hope
ReplyDeleteHello me
ReplyDeleteYou obviously were tortured as a child or are still one and still being tortured?
So Jaimie, you are quick to remove my posts but then allow posts by trolls like the one I am replying to who contribute nothing to the conversation?
He has replied directly to you so surely you would have seen the comment? Double standards?
Jeez, you and your 'facts'! It is NOT a 'fact' at all. Please look up the meaning of the word in the dictionary and absorb what it actually means.
