Liverpool fans are on the crest of a wave at the moment. Only four points off the top of the table at the business end of the season; playing some of the most exciting football in Europe, and Luis Suarez has just declared that he will stay at Anfield past the summer, even if the Reds fail to qualify for the Champions League. Well, forgive me for putting a dampener on things, but if you believe that, you'll believe anything.
To the unquestioning mind, Suarez's comments are - on the surface - a welcome boost, but his sincerity is questionable, especially given the fact he made exactly the same statement last year, and then proceeded to shamelessly tout himself out to Real Madrid and Arsenal in a desperate bid to ditch Liverpool.
When asked this week whether he would stay at Anfield if Liverpool failed to finish in the top four, Suárez - who has a £70m buyout clause in his contract - told Four Four Two magazine:
“I think so. I signed my new contract because I’m very happy here and I want to stay where I’m enjoying football and life. Playing in the Champions League isn’t dependent on that.”
Hmmm. Where have we heard that before?
March 2012: "I want to stay and I am very happy here. There are a good few years left on my contract and I want to carry on enjoying myself because both my family and I feel really happy here"
FEB 2013: Brendan Rodgers relays Suarez's alleged wishes - “I had a great conversation with his [Suarez's] agent a couple of weeks ago. He came in and rolled it out that he was so happy here and he was keen over the next couple of years for the club to progress"
FEB 2013: "I want to say now that, if you want to know what will happen to me if we don't qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay".
Fast forward and a few months, and Suarez had mysteriously changed his mind:
MAY 2013: "My reason for leaving is my family and my image, I don't feel comfortable here any more"
AUG 2013: "I need to be playing in the Champions League. I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career. Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it"
Suarez is a genius player, and I love watching him play, but he is quickly becoming the football version of the 'boy who cried wolf'. As such, forgive me if I choose not to believe anything he says about his alleged commitment to Liverpool FC.
At this point, Suarez's current claims about staying with LFC have less credibility than a Woody Allen-authored book on responsible parenting.

What a load of drivel this article is. I understand you need to create controvacy to get more hits on your site but this fan baiting is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteWhat worries me is this £70m buyout clause. Where did this info spring from?
ReplyDeleteloool Suarez is very funny but to be fair to him he is still here on Merseyside despite all his magnificent displays and oppurtunities to leave. Juventus, Arsenal and Real Madrid have all courted Suarez but hes still here, which must suggest there is something in him that says 'you know what, i actually do enjoy playing for Liverpool let me try 1 more time for Champions League with them so i can stay'. he msut actually enjoy life in Liverpool. that being said i think Suarez will stay at LFC for alot of years. he may want to fufil his dream of playing for Real Madrid, but right now LFC are elevating beyond levels he can imagine. Suarez will be at Liverpool for the next 3 seasons i reckon. as the players we will sign this Summer will make him comfortable to enjoy CL and PL football with Liverpool.
ReplyDeletei do agree with you that Suarez wanted to leave but he actually does genuinely love LFC. everyone saw him that day against Zenit. now that we can offer him CL football, Suarez has already said the PL is the best league in the world and its another reason he likes it at LFC. its only the CL he feels jealous, he will no longer feel this way and can hopefully guide us to CL glory next season.
next summer i want to get rid of Borini £10M, Reina £5M, Assaidi £5M, Aspas, £8M, Allen £10M, Coady £2M, Yesil £1M, Agger (maybe) £17M
total: £41M without agger, with £58M
replace Aspas with Loic Remy from QPR for £10M. hes a proven goalscorer at CL and PL football and has crucial attributes to take us far in next seasons competitions. electric pace, clinical finishing and cheap. £10M
Roberto Firmino - apparently our top target for this summer he is on fire. 18 goals/13 assists in 26 games is amazing for a Midfielder in the Bundesliga, and hes just turnt 22, so this would be the best signing in terms of potential and present ability. fits the FSG profile as well. £15M.
Momo Sissokho- i would replace Allen with Sissokho from Newcastle. what a beast. he will be great at LFC. athletic and suit our pressing game well. £12M. would represent £10M in profit for Newcastle. good deal. £12M
Fabio Coentrao- its been obvious for a while now we need a LB and with Coentrao available we might as well shore up the position for the next few years. £15M
Michu- he may be injured, but theres no doubt hes a genuine quality player. incredible technique and i think Michu would help our Midfield choices and give us another dimension, even though he can pass the ball on the floor well. £15M
in total: £70M
loan Suso again for one more season, bring back Ilori and were rolling.
Chill J.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to be monumentally stupid to believe that any player, let alone Suarez really believes that a lengthy contract means they're stuck with the club.
He signed his new contract for the same reason Wayne Rooney signed his - the club significantly upped the wage. The clubs offered the new contracts for one reason - to get a higher transfer fee in the summer. Juan Mata's contract will almost certainly have the kind of clauses in it that Torres had in his - if they don't qualify for UCL and a qualified club offers a certain amount, then he can be released.
The contracts are no more than bargaining chips for transfers these days.
I'm looking forward to the day Man City sign a foreign player and he announces he was a City fan when he was growing up. I just hope the interviewer has the balls to stand up and call him a lying bastard.
I agree it seems odd to me that having (apparently) had a buy out clause that was ignored why would you fall for it again? Unless of course there was a "gentleman's" agreement this time. But as the source is the Daily Mail even the existence of a clause is open to question. As of course is any possibility of any of the parties being gentlemen.
ReplyDeleteBy the Woody Allen loves his children.........
.
Yawn.
ReplyDeleteSpot on which iswhy it'sstupid for anyone involved or leven ooking in from the outside to be overly indignant when contracts are broken.or ignored
ReplyDeletelooooool thats actually so funny. its true nobody would ever support City when they are young. why would you follow a team that had players like Vassell when Henry, Gerrard, Beckham etc were around
ReplyDeleteChill? What are you talking about? Just because someone's opinion is not 'Luis Suarez is the second coming of Jesus Christ!' doesn't mean they're angry.
ReplyDeleteThe status of contracts is not relevant here. The point is that Suarez has stated he'll stay in the past, and then he's changed his mind. Using the worthlessness of contracts to mitigate his obvious insincerity is a typical fan copout.
Woody just wanted to make sure his daughter got with someone he liked. He likes that fella a lot.
ReplyDeleteApparently buyout clauses are not enforceable in this country. So it just doesn't make sense to me.
The issue surrounding the buyout clause is that it's the club that benefits from or is protected by it so it is the club that put is in there. Liverpool would not have benefit from selling for £40m so chose not to cite it's own cause. Suarez looked to gain from the £40m clause which is why it would not stand up in court and his image would have taken a battering had he insisted on stitching us up.
ReplyDeleteAlways so negative pre - season you stated that he would not kick another ball for Liverpool. Yet here we are 24 goals and 10 assists later.
ReplyDeleteJust maybe he wanted to leave due his upcoming ban for the bite on Ivanovic and the massive media attention it followed ... just a guess of course.
ReplyDeleteThe timeline suggests it may be plausible as all this talk of staying happened before the mentioned incident ...
You shouldn't be too quick with your judgement on Suarez ...
It's not judgement, it's stating facts: in the past, he specifically stated he would stay if LFC didn't get into the CL. Three months later, he tried his hardest to leave the club. After that, it's perfectly reasonable to question his comments this time. Perhaps if you were a little more objective, you'd see that.
ReplyDeleteSuarez stated he'll stay, and is STILL HERE. It doesn't matter if he tried to engineer a move or not, stating that he would stay was in fact factually correct.
ReplyDeleteAnd truly mystic.
As a footnote, I'm glad we didn't get Costa. He looks worse every time I see him.
ReplyDeleteI think the gist of the "new" buyout clause was that if he left, it would only be abroad.
ReplyDeleteAs for this £70m release clause it may seem that Henry's recent talk in the press was aimed at all those who think that they can use said clause (if it exists) to buy him. Perhaps Henry was saying that he has done it once and will do it again.
ReplyDeleteWhilst I agree that you can't exactly believe what people say.
ReplyDeleteHe isn't really going to turn around now, and say no, I'm leaving.
Well, Torres asked to leave once and he's now at Chelsea, I have lost count of how many times Suarez has been leaving Liverpool and he hasn't
ReplyDeleteAt this stage of things, there's nothing to suggest he'd leave. He's gone a long way to improve himself as a player, and as a person, is doing the business, has the team helping him out, is even doing interviews in English. The team too has come along so much that the chances of him leaving are slim, even if the big boys come calling. As for not making Champion's League highly doubtful at this point.
ReplyDeleteExpect to see Suarez and co putting in even more effort over the next 10 games.
Well there's a shock. In a lull between matches, Kenwar has resorted to his favourite hobby of Suarez-bashing. You really do need a new record, because you wore this one out months ago. No-one's listening any more. Luis Suarez remains a Liverpool player. Get over it.
ReplyDeleteWhat if this was all a secret plot by Henry to divert attention away from his bite incident :D. Huh, huh, Anyone? Because if it wasn't for this sequence of events Suarez would have been the villain of the Summer. Now there are #FreeSuarez campaigns going around, as if he's a victim. On the plus side this doesn't make Liverpool fans look like Muppets.
ReplyDeleteFair point. People in football tell lies, Suarez included AND contracts are worthless
ReplyDeleteI am always surprised to hear that journalists are invited into contract negotiations
ReplyDeleteYou mean to everyone who wasn't a Liverpool fan. Suddenly Arsenal fans saw the brilliance rather than the bitey? It is a theory like.
ReplyDeleteanother pointless and negative article... I have to wonder who this site is for sometimes... But hey you know best....
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that matters here is he will stay if we qualify for CL footie and as it stands we will finish in the top 4.
ReplyDeleteIf we are simply stating facts, he didn't lie because he is STILL HERE. As he said he would be.
ReplyDeleteUsual anti-suarez article by the joke of a writer who thinks he's a sport journo but could get a job for the local tabloid.
ReplyDeletezzzzzzz
buyout clause dont stand in the uk!!! theyre not worth paper there wrote on here!!when he was trying to leave in the summer the pfa looked into it for him!!how come he didnt leave?? buyout clause mean nothing in the uk!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like something off Take Me Out....... "Let the brilliance see the bitey".
ReplyDeleteNot that I watch it, obviously.
No one believed suarez will stay after the year he had, but he did! So what makes you think he wont now if we miss out on cl? He probably understood this is the best club for him, and if he goes somewhere else for big money he would fail like, torres, bale neymar etc.
ReplyDeleteWHY U DELETING COMMENTS KAWAR COS U KNOW ITS RIGHT YOU THICK CUNT!!!
ReplyDeleteneymar and bale are doing really well
ReplyDeleteAnd where did I say Suarez *lied*? Please don't twist my words. If you can't interpret what I write fairly, then why bother commenting? Suarez stayed, but not for want of trying to escape. That's the point you ignore. He didn't stay because he wanted to; he stayed because he was forced to. Your defence of Suarez is as disingenuous as everyone else's: you ignore reality rather than just face the truth that he wanted to leave.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the comments but I'm certain everyone loved this article.
ReplyDeleteAh! Hit the panic button!
