Liverpool legend John Aldridge has launched a withering attack on Chelsea attacker Victor Moses, who is currently on a season-long loan at Anfield.
In a recent column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge labelled moses - who cost Chelsea €11m last summer - a 'flop', and accused him of looking 'disinterested' on the field. He scathed:
"He [Moses] has let himself down.
"There's no desire, no spirit, and he doesn’t look like he’s in the right frame of mind. .
"He has failed to stake any type of claim [and] it might be in everyone’s best interests if the loan is cancelled"
Strong stuff from Aldo, and it's hard to disagree with anything he says. With one goal and no assists in sixteen appearances so far, Moses has contributed next to nothing since signing-in during the summer.
It's just another example of Brendan Rodgers ineffective performance in the transfer market, especially with loan deals, all of which have failed so far. In my view, it's all down to personal desire with Moses:
* He's the reigning Nigerian player of the year, and is guaranteed to go to the World Cup with Nigeria. As such, he doesn't have to bust a gut to secure his place in the team. He can just coast along, take it easy, avoid injury and then catch a plane in June. If there was a fire under him to perform then it might be a different story.
* Moses probably has one eye a return to Chelsea. He's a Londoner, and I doubt LFC means anything to him. He's probably happy to sit on the bench at Stamford Bridge, earning big-bucks in one of the world's greatest cities.
* Rodgers has clearly failed to motivate Moses effectively. If he had, we'd be seeing more effort and desire on the field.
Rodgers has rejected the possibility of terminating the loan deal, though. In an interview with the Liverpool Echo over the weekend, he explained:
"There will be no cancelling the loan. Victor and I have spoken a couple of times this week, and he has been excellent since then. I have seen a real marked difference in terms of his performance. He has made it very clear he loves it here – despite one or two stories I’ve heard”
Given the club's lack of strength in depth (again, another by-product of poor performance in the transfer market), Rodgers couldn't send Moses back to Chelsea even if he wanted to, so it looks like Liverpool are stuck with yet another passenger until the end of the season.
Having said that, Moses may suddenly come alive and start banging in the goals/assists, and that would be great for Liverpool's battle to make the Champions League, but based on the evidence so far, I can't see that happening.

He's no Luis Garcia that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteHonestly Brendan Rodgers is a nice guy. It is the nice guy stuff that could cost Liverpool the chance of top 4 or above. Moses hasn't tried for us in last 1/2 dozen games . Get rid and start being more ruthless BR as you don't get the chance to be LFC manager very often.
ReplyDeleteReigning African player of the year? He has never won that award and Yaya Toure has won it for the last 3?
ReplyDeleteIf you dont spend big money on world class proven players you have to gamble on the likes of Borini, Coutinho, Aspas etc. Some will work and some wont that's the nature of a gamble.
Just imagine the Stoke game with Texiera playing in the position Lucas played ?, it is criminal.
ReplyDeleteVictor needs more play time, but with the squad in full flight he has to wait his turn, will do ok when played a few games
ReplyDeleteBBC African Player of the Year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24945275
ReplyDeleteBBC African player of the year,
ReplyDelete2013 NOMINEE.
Nominee in 2013, which was won by Yaya Toure.
ReplyDeletehe already had his chances this season....where coutinho injured at beginning of season..............
ReplyDeleteWhat is the point in, getting rid? We will still have to pay his wages for the term that was agreed and we have one player less in the squad. A few injuries and we might need him. No point in ending the loan deal early now unless he is causing issues in the locker room but i haven't heard anything along those lines.
ReplyDeletethere are a lot of unknown on BR mind !
ReplyDeletewhy we loan moses when we had suso?
why loan cissohko when glen can play LB and wisdom or flano at RB?
why we sign alberto while we still tied with suso?
why we loan Borini out and he sign Aspas for deco at bench?
why BR loan assaidi out and let coutinho play out of position at wide instead more center role?
hmmm ilori case is more WHY WHY WHY
My first impression when he signed for the year was a positive one. I thought he was a good capture and would contribute to the team. This impression was reinforced when he scored on his debut. My feelings then were that he would not start every game, but when he did or came off the bench he would have an effect on the game.
ReplyDeleteWell I have been bitterly disappointed since his first outing. He looks disinterested and unmotivated. I realise BR could be blamed for this, but why should he waste a disproportionate amount of time trying to inspire and develope a player who will no longer be in the team come May?
Moses was given the chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in England, chances he would not have got at Chelsea IMO, and he has failed to see the significance of this oppertunity. Unless there is a spending spree come the end of Jan there is no way we can afford to send him back, but for Moses, unless he dramatically changes his attitude, the big picture looks like this.
Jan to May:Liverpool subs bench (might start vs bmouth/albion)
May to Sept: Chelsea reserve team locker room and transfer list.
Sept onwards: Starring role for Crystal Palace.
I hope I'm wrong and he starts to set the place alight, but in my experience, attitude can very rarely be changed by a coach, and if Victor is happy to go where he's going, that's not going to change.
I've only been reading some of your stuff recently, but they all seem to have a negative edge to most.... What's with this @this is an other example of BR's Ineffectiveness in the market' garbage.... I can think of no team that doesn't have failures aswell as successes when it comes to transfers, this isn't exclusive to Brendan Rodgers... But whatever, it's always easier to write somethig complaining rather than looking at the positive.. BR has taken an aging team falling down the table and with limited funds turned them round,, There have been some rather great transfer successes with Mignolet and Sakho,, Coutinho and Sturridge,, all permanent signings. Others young and still to make it into the team also are far from failures.. th only few that shouldn't be wearing the shirt are loanees to cover the real first choice... But hey lets focus on the bad and by pass the good... Lets say that this article is just an other example of your ineffectiveness to come up with meaningful journalism... Keep up the great work....
ReplyDeleteI don't understand where you get this nice guy idea from. I think, if nothing else, Rodgers is a very fair but strict manager who knows exactly where to draw the line and who is not afraid to drop anyone. In the year and a half he's been with us he's had no qualms dropping the likes of Downing, Henderson, Allen and Enrique and getting rid of Carrol. I have a firm belief in Rodgers and for the first time in years I feel comfortable that we'll clinch that top four spot. The game against Stoke is a tell tale sign for me. This was a must win game and in other years we would surely have dropped the ball. Now we just go and score five goals. I think with Rodgers we play to win again whereas before, since Houllier, we played not to lose. It is that winners mentality that makes him ruthless when he needs to be. But always fair. The one doubt I have is that we will not add to the squad this January which means a couple of injuries could seriously derail our season. But the shape and the attitude of the team is spot on. We always look like beating "weaker" opposition and it has been a long time since that could be said.
ReplyDeleteI agree Moses shouldn't be lacing up his boots for us, but the reaility is we are paper thin on squad members. Unfortunately we need bodies.
ReplyDeleteJamie - Why does my comment stating that the BBC African footballer of the year is also Yaya Toure and that Moses was just a nominee keep disappearing ?
ReplyDeleteLike to see how well you would do given the size of the job Brendan had to take on at the start of his tenure, and with limited funds...
ReplyDeleteReally good post. I agree
ReplyDeleteDisqus glitch, It happens. Nothing I can do about it unfortunately It's live at the moment. It just disappears for a few seconds every now and again.
ReplyDeleteI dont think his been given enough time on the pitch to even think that his not good enough when we play good football and the team on the day is playing well its hard to change the team and bring subs on im sure if he starts moses will give 100% u got to remember this is a player whos been sitting on the bench at chelsea he needs starts #YNWA
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed too! I've been following him since his Palace days. It seems that everytime he plays he wants to over elaborate things e.g trying to beat someone instead of laying the ball off! He doesn't work as hard off the ball either! TBH keeping him to the end of the season makes sense as I believe he can still play a role off the bench!
ReplyDeleteBR's transfer moves do need extra scrutiny as there's still far too much waste-Borini, Aspas, ?Ilori, Assaidi. I hope we start considering players for the first XI & not the bench!
spot on
ReplyDeleteI agree, but in fairness to Borini and Assaidi they are both doing well at their respective clubs now, and i can see us getting our money back on those two. I think they are talented, just maybe a bit shy of top team requirements.
ReplyDeleteFlanno on the right, Enrique on the left. Seems strange, but those are our two bwst full backs...
ReplyDeleteI think Moses knows that he is not going to be offered a permanent contract at LFC and maybe has given him a 'so what if I do not perform attitude'. Chelsea will sell him to another EPL club, hey even Martinez might sign him for Everton...
ReplyDeleteOnce we are back playing CL football then those "I hope we start considering players for the first Xi" will be so much easier to attract...
Why has the world not ended yet after all these doomsday predictions we have had?
ReplyDeleteBone-idle Victor!!!!
ReplyDeleteExcuse me, where are we in the League?
ReplyDeleteand when was the last time since we have been there?
Typical BBC mindset, give it to a non-playing member of a London club.Let me guess,Garth Crookes involved.
ReplyDeleteWe demolish weaker teams, never mind beat them.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are quite right, previous years we would be playing for the draw whereas now we steamroll our way to a win.
Winning mentality is what it is all about and that is what Rodgers has drilled into our players.
Suso need game time, better to loan him out to a team where he can gain strength with regular play. bring in Moses because we need cover. But look at how often Moses has played because of our good form and transpose that on to Suso - do you think that amount of game time would help develop the lad? No.
ReplyDeleteCissokho was brought in because Enrique has been having injury problems and need senior competition. The fact Enrique is now out injured its a good thing we loaned in a senior player instead of burning out one of the young kids. Flanno has played well while hes been in, but if he were the main man and he went through a bad period like Allen then his confidence and development would be totally shot.
Borini needed a fresh start to kick his career - being second fiddle to Suarez and Danny is not good for young players developemnt long term. Aspas, a senior player was signed amidst the "Suarez is leaving" summer saga. If Suarez had left Asapas would have played more and would have more goals, Borini in that case would not have been loaned out.
Alberto is one for the future, hes not a 1st teamer yet. Suso is further along in his development but needed regular game time to have the mentality and body to sustain 1st team action - Suso will be back next season and it may then be Albertos time to finalise his developement at a Prem side... this is not cookie-cutter football, everyones different.
Assaidi by all accounts wasn't showing enough in training. He has nothing to do with the work Coutinho does. Coutinho plays wide as his second position. to accomodate a different formation, not a different player. He can play 2 positions where we need it, Assaidi can play only Winger and second striker - we are covered for strikers, we have Moses, Sterling etc who can play on the wing so best to let Assaidi gain prem experience as hes the kind ofplayer who needs that. He'll be back next season.
iLori is one for the future.
I really don't understand why you are confused about our promising or misfiring players getting regular game time elsewhere while we bang in goals left right and center. Shall we let them rot being our in form players instead? You're associating loaning out a player with rejecting him, but its not as simple as that.
Msoes was down the pecking order at Chelsea, so bring him in and maybe he wants to prove a point. If anything we have a body to cover our promising loaned out players.
At the end of it we will know which players have improved and which are ready to be sold, but we can't do that if theyre playing behind the likes of Luis Suarez, Danny and Stevie because they jsut won't get in the team to show it
EXACTLY my sentiments.
ReplyDeleteI think Martinez should know enough about him by now to let Victor pass,as it were.If they revive the ghastly 'Footballer's Wives' he'd be the inspiration for one of the leading characters.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we can just get rid. Its a season long loan deal. I am pretty sure its a contractual obligation to keep him the rest of the season. I have only ever seen one player get sent away while on loan and that was Sahin and Dortmund took over the deal. BR has dropped him, that is all he can really do I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteAldridge Aldrige Aldridge when your pal was given 100m where did Liverpool end. Did you maker noise then. Do you know how to manage?
ReplyDeleteYep, you're right. He's Nigerian player of the year: http://nesn.com/2013/11/liverpools-victor-moses-wins-2013-nigerian-player-of-the-year-award/
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, my point is that due to that award, he's guaranteed to go to the World Cup, so there's no real motivation for him to bust a gut for Liverpool.
Brendan has said that he has seen an improvement in Moses. again this is probably all down to BRs excellent man management skills.Frankly I don't know how he does it :-)
ReplyDeleteDon't agree Anthony. I have no idea whether Brendan is a nice guy or not. He has however taken no prisoners since he arrived at Anfield and has probably lost more energy weeding out and getting rid of players not up to it. He hasn't seen the need to keep them because of the crazy money Dalglish spent. He is his own man. Carroll, Wisdom, Downing, Cole, Spearing, Shelvey, Suso, Assaidi, Reina. All out. I really don't think he will waste time worrying too much about Moses. I find your comment way off the mark.
ReplyDeleteGreat post
ReplyDeleteI love to hear experts like yourself educate us all, oh and BR also.
ReplyDeleteBobby, you really need to drop your fixation with Texiera, if he was good enough, he would would be in the squad, never mind playing in the 1st 11.
ReplyDeleteget this right, HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, right now, Suso is better, and he is not good enough, "right now"
Playing against 18 year olds is light years away from playing against some of the best players in World football, believe me, been there and failed miserably, as a youth.
Was too bored to read the essay,
ReplyDeleteYes the spec is, his agent asked about a permanent move, which was turned down, so now he is doing a GJ, we cant send him back, there is a loan contract in place, so he has decided to do F**k all, just sit and collect his wages, but pretends to be interested. His chances of getting even one game for chelsea ever again, I would rate at about 1 one a million. We are stuck with him,
ReplyDeleteIf he goes back we may still have to pay his wages, so dropping him is next best, not one of Rodgers best moves in the market, pretty much like Allen, Aspas, Alberto, Assaidi, Borini, and sissokho.
ReplyDeleteMartinez is not so stupid. Compare his signing to Rodgers.
ReplyDeleteNeither does he!
ReplyDeleteIs there any way to make him walk 40 years in the desert first?
ReplyDeleteMcarthy and McGeady are decent but Alcaraz and Kone are pretty average. Unless your referring to loans which were good, but lets face it short term. I am sure if we could have gotten Lukaku we would have had a go but he would have to fight for his pace amongst two of the best strikers in the league. as well as looking a bigger threat at the beginning of the season.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter where we are now in league it's where will we be in the summer?
ReplyDeleteTook the words out my mouth. Don't forget Sahin sent him packing too :)
ReplyDeleteI don't agree that BR can be held to blame for signing Cissokho and Moses on loan. Both these players have been awesome in the past and you would've needed a crystal ball to imagine they would both flop this year. On the face of it at the start of the season we all thought they were brilliant signings. Cissokho has shown signs of improvement hopefully Moses will as well. At their best both of them are great players but obviously they are not at their best now.
ReplyDeleteRuthless with all other except Steven Gerrard. SG should not be starting most games
ReplyDeleteI agree 99% except when it comes to benching Steven Gerrard
ReplyDeleteTotally agree.
ReplyDeleteWe have so many solid players that could come good. Those here on loan, those out there on loan, those young ones or recent signings on the bench, Academy players... BR will be our savior if he keeps buying players at his ratio of success(which is not great), but brings us CL.
Disregarding the possible number of so called flops.
Moses scored once. Maybe we would have not won those 3 points if he hasn,t scored- maybe we would, but the fact is he contributed in what seems to be a successful team.
spot on.
ReplyDeleteReally good one.. Shame you dont disqus that much here..
ReplyDeleteHe is a winger, amf did not suit him.
ReplyDeleteLittle higher. Surely above manu..
ReplyDeleteYou having a laugh? Do you really think Everton will sign Lukaku permanently?
ReplyDeleteAre you that sour about Rodgers? Shame...
Of course it matters. This is the first time since Rafa's last season that we are on target to finish top 4. Do you have anything to say about that?
ReplyDeleteWell luckily Moses is only on loan and if Johnson wants to go then so be it. It is not like he is irreplaceable.
ReplyDeleteThat's laughable. We play three midfielders and we have four in the squad. When fit, should Allen, Lucas and Henderson all play ahead of him? Are they all better and more influential?
ReplyDeleteNail hit on the head.
ReplyDeleteI suspect for Rodgers that loan moves are a bit of a desperate last resort when we can't get main targets or if we're unsure about a player. Generally if you're not 100% on a player you just don't sign them but a loan move has less risk when you're taking a player onto the books for a long term contract with an associated transfer fee. I don't think any of our loan players were high profile targets and in the case of Moses I think he was a last minute compromise when all our main attacking player targets from the summer turned us down. I'd also suggest that any team that is willing to loan out a player to a rival possibly doesn't rate that player very highly. Lukaku is the astonishing exception to this and I honestly don't know what Chelsea are thinking. Otherwise, unless we're taking loans from massive clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern who are over-loaded with talent, why would a player not good enough for another club be good enough for us? The inability to sign big targets has hurt us and thus we've resorted to taking cheap options as a stop-gap.
ReplyDeleteAldo sounds a bit over-dramatic to me, I think he's reading into Moses some attributes that are not there. If Moses was not committed and not trying hard then he wouldn't play, period. Rodgers would have him off the squad in a second because that's not how you earn respect from this manager. Moses hasn't been setting the world alight but if he's getting game time under Rodgers then it's because he's training well and putting in the work required. You just don't play for LFC under any other conditions. To suggest the contrary requires some kind of inside knowledge and is effectively calling Rodgers a liar. In that instance you need more than a few vague speculations to back that up.
How can you use the loan of Moses to have a go at Brendan Rodgers?
ReplyDeleteIt is down to the player and not the manager for the reasons it has not worked out. He has been given plenty of game time and has just not produced. Surely it's an example of how you should operate in the loan market.... Try before you buy!! Imagine the criticism from the likes of you Jamie if he was a permanent signing.
Bcoz we are not walking alone hahahaha YNWA
ReplyDeleteI just think that the way we are doing things we assess a player for a time while they train a play a few for the first team then loan him out for development or let him go. Playing the "what if" game and wringing your hands doesn't help when we know that they may be rich professionals but theyre humans and humans always need a period of time to adapt. Some adapt quickly, others not so.
ReplyDeleteThis is honestly bonkers. The criticisms of Johnson are so far over the top. Even though he's not in his best attacking form, his full back play is so good... full back is about positioning above all, and it's a hard position to master. Johnson plays brilliantly with Skrtel to shut the opposition down on his side. When I think of Flanno I think of him standing 10 yards out of position with a winger or midfielder flying past him into space. There's a reason Johnson doesn't get caught out like that.
ReplyDeleteIf you'd read it you'd have been less bored.
ReplyDeleteBase on logical ..and that is a good plan as what you say.
ReplyDeleteBut does it applying right now? Not all
The person should loan out is IBE not Assaidi. And we pay more salary to MOSES compare to Assaidi as cover? That dont make sense ( i assume Moses salary and loan fee is greater than Assaidi earn )
Signing Aspas just in case for Suarez leave that make sense but i would say is AFTER not BEFORE sold. Once again IF suarez leave that time we had BORINI in hand as well. Dont forget why we need to sign Aspas (as cover suarez leave ) since the board not intent to let him leave.
Get a senior LB to cover JE injury is a plan. But im against is the candidate. Praise on BR can predict JE injured but AC not the solution. Is he? Does BR get the right man? Judge till now is NO answer. As a liv fans im hope he get me wrong.
Borini need a fresh start that i agree. My personally feeling tot it would be great is we keep him.
Alberto for future? Ilori for future?
YES, but why we dont loan him out get more game time? Instead keep them deco at bench. Meanwhile we loan Suso? Is that what you try to say DEVELOPMENT YOUNG TALENT? According to u Suso is on ahead of alberto in development then why we keep Alberto at bench and BR keep moaning about squad lack of quality. Loan moses in at his peak is plan but once again it show BR team is wrong.
What i sense is loaning player (suso, assaidi, borini , yesil and etc) out is raise they sales value rather than development for future) . Even they did great at other team But the problem will loop back if we buy new fresh player deco at bench. Which BR practicing is trying to LIMIT FRINGE PLAYER GAME TIME...In some games i really do think we need to release/sub those player IN.
Dont get me wrong on tat im not against BR tactically. Just the player management or transfer activities seem less convincing. I had no problem with the player he buy. All young / senior had his ability to help the squad. But he not getting THE MOST OUT FROM THEM.
Izzit me or any1 out there do feel we still using same squad as last few season? While the so called new blood is rotten somewhere? All previous problem last season still yet to fix !
I am totally AGAINST on moneyball method. We shouldn't only focusing on so called NEXT BIG THING or REPLICA of 5star player.
If we back on regularly challenging title then this method is ok (bcoz it meant out squad is good enuf.) But rite now we are not. Our quality is paper thin.
ps: sorry for bad English and sentence arrangement.
What is the moneyball method?
ReplyDeleteGive us your explanation please...
poor performance in transfer market??? He got him on LOAN hence didn't have to shell out a lot more money! surely that's a good thing when a player isn't performing. re not motivating and improving players - seen Henderson play lately?
ReplyDeleteHeavy investing young n sell....
ReplyDeleteNo it is not. I think you need to go do your homework on the meaning of Moneyball.
ReplyDeletesorry if i use word wrong...
ReplyDeletefrom early edi mention bout bad eng...
But sure u know what i meant about the transfer philosophy LFC trying to focus
Moneyball is not about investing in young players and selling them later on.
ReplyDeleteMoneyball is about buying players who are 'undervalued' and making them superstars.
Sturridge and Coutinho have improved massively as players since they joined us. If they were at the level they are now before we bought them then we would have paid double what we originally paid and there is now way FSG will sell them.
So anyone who thinks Moneyball is about buying young players and selling them to make a profit have been completely misinformed.
Oic so do Allen ? Aspas? Borini? The only 2 u mention is best bet but the rest seem not
ReplyDeleteAllen as he has show of late has a massive part to play in what Rodgers wants to achieve. When Allen is back from injury he will go straight back into the starting eleven.
ReplyDeleteAspas, Bornini? Well it is not like every signing will work out. No manager anywhere in the world has a 100% transfer success rate. The real thing is not like fantasy football unfortunately...
agree
ReplyDeleteI think Johnson is one of our rare top class players. Since the injury he was horrible in attack and nothing special in the back. Think he could use some bench time.
ReplyDeleteI said from the beginning that Moses is pretty much a right footed version of Downing, and just as with Downing, playing him in any role other than as a traditional winger is setting him up to fail.
ReplyDeleteMoses has pace and a bit of power, but just as with Downing, little trickery or guile to his game, so playing him as an inverted winger carried little logic to me (and even less so when we played him as a central playmaker!)
And to add to it all Migno is off form !
ReplyDelete
