This time last year, Liverpool had already completed the fantastic signing of Daniel Sturridge, and with just over two weeks the transfer window remaining, Reds fans are getting a little anxious over the club's lack action in in the current transfer window. Rumours are flying around all over the place, but there's seemingly very little concrete action being taken by the club. As fan himself, Anfield legend John Aldridge is concerned about the current lack of action, and he's urged Brendan Rodgers to sign a minimum of THREE players before the month is out.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo this week, Aldo admitted that he's 'disappointed' with Rodgers' recent suggestion that team-strengthening may have to take take place in the summer, and urged the manager 'ensure' that the club does 'what's required' to keep the club in the hunt for a Champions League place.
In his other column for Sunday World, Aldo outlined exactly what he wants to see during the January transfer window. He noted:
"If the boss can add a dynamic winger; a reliable left-back [and] a combative midfielder with a touch of class, then Liverpool really will be in business. My hope is Liverpool will [sign] at least one [player] who makes them better"
Are those three areas priority positions for Liverpool to fill? Goals from midfield still remains an issue, and although Suarez and Sturridge are papering over the cracks, that probably won't last until the end of the season. If SAS don't score regularly, who else will (on a consistent basis). It would be good to have another serious goal threat in the side.
It seems like Reds fans have spent years crying out for a 'combative midfielder with a touch of class', but Rodgers doesn't seem to prioritise that type of player, and I doubt he's going to spend big bucks on Diame-style midfielder this month. Forget the 'combative' part; just sign a midfielder with class, preferably an attack-minded, goalscorer/creator.
As for left-back - I'm not sure that's an urgent position to fill right now, Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan will return soon. Some fans will argue that neither is good enough for the long-term, and that may be right, but for the rest of the season, those two - plus Cissokho - are (arguably) enough cover for that position.
Liverpool principal owner John Henry is allegedly flying to the UK this week for talks with Rodgers and Ian Ayre over the club's transfer business. If that's true, why is this meeting taking place with only TWO WEEKS of the transfer window remaining? Surely the budget etc should've been set weeks, if not months, ago?
Given the club's excellent position in the Premier League table, and the mounting injury list, it seems inconceivable that FSG won't make money available to strengthen the squad; having said that, in light of Rodgers' ineffective performance in the summer transfer market, any possible reluctance to hand over more money - without assurances - is arguably understandable.
If you had to choose three players to sign based on Aldo's wanted-list, who would you sign?

Michael Bradley would have been a good purchase...
ReplyDeletem'vila, jorginho,iturbe, montoya, luke shaw
ReplyDeletefernando from porto mitroglu the turk and salah if we had the money out of the three i would take a risk and opt for the midfielder fernando if i could only choose one
ReplyDeleteM'vila, Salah and Montoya for me.
ReplyDeleteWould have been a nice depth player for us. But wouldn't start regularly over any of our current crop when healthy.
ReplyDeleteM'vila would be an ideal player for us. Salah also sounds like he'd be a nice pickup.
ReplyDeleteNot sure there's anyone else out there realistically-speaking that makes me think he'd improve our team. Just depth purchases.
Jamie K, all you do is write antagonistic nagative rhetoric about Liverpool. You will never be pleased and it's a shame you seem to have found a public place to frequently air your views.
ReplyDeleteI'd settle for just the one if it was Mata. Maybe just dreaming there though.
ReplyDelete...by found a place, do you mean the website that he himself runs?
ReplyDeleteThanks, pal. Been great talking to you.
The lack of activity suggests either. We cannot get the quality in or the owners are cautious of whether to spend and we don't get CL, I hope it's not the latter.
ReplyDeleteMartin Montoya, Christian Tello, Ivan Rakitic.
ReplyDeleteBut three this window is definitely optimistic. I would be happy with an attacking mid and another winger, but something tells me it will be one signing this winter. I hope its enough.
We have an excellent team, its the squad that could cost us CL unless we get very lucky with injuries.
That would be superb. Wonder if he likes the beatles?
ReplyDeleteOur very own Jack Robinson!, Connor Coady, AND our very own Assaidi! Barring that Gerard Deulofeu or Tello. We've shot our selves in the arse this season with our loans.
ReplyDeleteI also hope we dont get left behind. Chelsea and everton have already strengthened.
ReplyDeleteMourinho obviously doesn't rate him so is it that far fetched? In a World Cup year he needs to play so he might force a move, why not to us? Yeah I know I'm still dreaming.....
ReplyDeleteFind out this weekend if there's any cash, when J Henry comes over, don't hold your breath though. He'll probably want to know what happened to the money he spent on Allen, Aspas,Alberto, Assaidi, borini, Moses, and Sissokho.
ReplyDeleteHe's probably flying over now because the last month or so has been a huge part of the baseball off season and with the Red Sox being World Series champions (and they make him way more money) I'm sure he was a tad distracted, Overall I think the team is strong it's really a lack of depth that could hurt us in the end and I feel one bigger signing (Salah seems the most likely if you believe what's in the papers) complimented by one or two smaller ones would be just fine.
ReplyDeleteYet he keeps going out and signing new players every transfer period. I'm sure after Andy Carroll he's going to remain nervous about big January investments and this time of year is when players are a bit pricier overall. Just in the last couple of weeks Salah has gone from being 'valued' at 9 million all the way to 16 million for example.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this completely
ReplyDeleteI think it's a poor performance by the club. You can negotiate deals at any time, they just go through during the transfer window. Rodgers and his committee should of already had targets lined up. It's frustrating how Rodgers snaps up Aspas and Alberto in the summer with ease but fails to address any real problems the squad has.
ReplyDeleteDalglish was in the run for the top four in January but everything fell apart after that, let's hope that doesn't happen again.
yes he would have done us.
ReplyDeleteSpot on with your opinion on J(IMO) K
ReplyDeletewe will end up with no quality if we don't move quick. Turan,Rakitic,Mvila would have won us the league maybe but it isn't football manager but surely we can still bring in quality. let us trust in God that there is more Coutinho and Sturridge types out there.
ReplyDeleteDon't think its far fetched to see him move on, but
ReplyDeleteIf we could outbid the obvious interest in him there would be from a host of other teams, if we could convince him that despite us not having champions league this year he is the man to take us there next year, if we could convince him the long days of winter by the mersey and not long beaches in the costa are for him....
do you honestly think JM would sell him to us? :)
I mean the guy bought Willian just so spurs couldn't have him, sure he gave us Moses but i think that was tactical sabotage on his part and they're all having a laugh over in the bridge!
Would be a wonder signing, but my head says no chance.
Jack Robinson is not good enough. Neither's Connor Coady. Neither's Assaidi.
ReplyDelete@Enrik dude i said the same ish a few days back plus i believe FSG owns roma too so the fee could off be fake money transfering through. But i think bradley is more mobile than lucas and with stevie holding deep than bradly would been more offensive.
ReplyDeleteAssaidi, on recent form at least, would be a very interesting option from the best. Better than Moses at least. I would guess that between loaning Moses and loaning Assaidi down, we've made a loss.
ReplyDeleteMata
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, this has been a very good read and analysis of the current transfer window. Also this is a forum to air your views..
ReplyDeleteI don't see your point of view .
I think BR is patient, no need to jump on the first player you were eyeing just because he is available, I think we will get one good buy and one young, future-investment buy in, but they will happen late in the window.
ReplyDeleteJulian draxler or Rakitic
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was thinking. Why the hell, with already half the transfer window ticked by, have they only now decided to seriously discuss transfers? 'm starting to get anxious. It's absolutely f**king frustrating. I was optimistic that we were going to sign a couple of good players early on, and I expected that- yet still no one has arrived. Everyone has known that January transfers are a top priority. It's time that they look like it's being treated like that.
ReplyDeleteMata is not coming to Liverpool, forget about it.
ReplyDeleteBuy:
ReplyDeleteFernando / Jorginho / Emmanuel Badu / M'Vila (any 2 of 4)
Salah
Marcell Jansen (5m release clause!!)
Vrsaljko (if there is additional funds)
Sell:
Aspas
Luis Alberto (if BR continues to NOT have faith in him)
Martin Kelly (no point keeping him if more defenders are purchased)
Swapping Borini for Adam Johnson is a decent option although i doubt borini would want to stay at sunderland beyond this season. In fact, using borini to get luis muriel would be a wiser option. If liverpool could get Luis Muriel, Juan Iturbe and Ivan Rakitic before the World Cup, next season would b very interesting.
I believe we are active but we rarely make things happen. With injuries on top of an already weak squad (arguably due to poor transfer market performance), Rodgers and co should of prioritised at least one signing and when the window opens we can go bam, we got our man. I believe the club works all year round but there is a lot of dawdling.
ReplyDeleteAs I said, we had no problem hand picking Aspas to join us in the summer but since the season started we have been desperate for another centre mid and this issue has still not been addressed (only 3 fit CM's and all are playing, every match).
January signings are not mandatory but in this instance we need one or two to come in so we can continue our challenge for CL.
We will sign players only if it makes sense. That has been the message all along?
ReplyDeleteAll of us would like to see at least one signing but clearly the club will not sign players just for the sake of making the fans happy.
Apparently LFC and Napoli tried to loan M'Villa but FC Rubin Kazan and his agent are only interested in a permanent deal. The only other club he has played for is Rennes. Depending on his fee and wages, this might be another player filled with question marks.
He was also banned from playing for France since 2012 and will only allowed to represent his country in June this years again. That might tell you that the rumours about his attitude problem may be true?
Fact is that should we make CL then we will be able to sign a much better player than him so there is no need to make panic buys yet. Our current squad is in the top 4, players are returning from injury and we are eclipsing last seasons performance in the EPL.
Sit back and enjoy the ride...
Don't know about LFC getting M'Villa on loan, we already have two on loan, max allowed by FA.
ReplyDeleteEverton have three players on loan so think you might be wrong.
ReplyDeleteDo you even know what goes on behind the scenes, easy to judge then isn't it?
ReplyDeleteWhy was he banned?
ReplyDeleteAparently he went awol when he was on International duty.
ReplyDeleteGoogle "M'villa banned". If I post any links they will just go for moderation...
Obviously there were other issues too with M'Villa. Being banned for over a year by your own country is a sign of a player who thinks he can do what he wants and do we really want players like that playing for us?
I find Jaimie to be like the kitchen manager in the movie, Larry Crowne, tough but fair.
ReplyDeleteI do not think any big player is coming in ..maybe a DM for back up . I feel FSG will wait till the summer , there are players coming back from injury and should be able to carry this momentum forward to attain a top 4 finish. when the summer comes then decisions will be made for a challenge and investment in Europe , or if not a Suarez move and hence a rebuild .
ReplyDeleteThey may have scouted their targets, but I'd be really concerned if Rodgers still hasn't yet had formal discussions with FSG re: transfers. The targets still need the tick of financial approval from FSG.
ReplyDeleteI think there may be a good reason why he is still at West Ham and not a bigger club...
ReplyDeleteRodgers has always said that he is in contact with the owners on a regular basis and pretty sure nothing has changed.
ReplyDeleteAsk any WHU fan about his performances this season and all of a sudden that 3.5m looks more like a fair price rather than a bargain. It's a pity really as he had a good run last season, maybe he's lost some desire this season which is a question mark in itself...
ReplyDelete$ tag means nth
ReplyDeleteWell lets just hope this meeting is just a follow-up session
ReplyDeleteThe story about John Henry flying over from the States is only a rumour remember...
ReplyDeletePutting my money on it being true!
ReplyDeletejamie first i am regular visitors of this site ..... these would suit us then its fernando of porto (big defensive mid) and mohamed salah (amazing player can develop to a better player than we have) and luke shaw(very good LB with potential)
ReplyDeleteI honestly can't agree with this statement either. What is the point of talking about LFC through rose tinted glasses? Get real... Keep up the good work Jaimie.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any more insight than you or others and never claimed to but please continue to instantly disregard anything about Rodgers you perceive to be negative.
ReplyDeleteWell 15 days gone, still nothing and now Im convinced we wont get anyone. Fsg is watching us playing good nicking some results and thinking hmm good squad so we dont need to spend, which is a massive ignorance. Look at chelsea still buying, why we dont go for mata now they added matic, sure mata wont even sit on bench now.. Or whats happening with salah, they said hes so near of completing the deal now he looks miles away, these people are playing with these poor fans, I just hope suarez gets injured for some months then fsg will see what kind of a team we are without him, what a disgrace.
ReplyDeleteRogers new the kind of football he was going to play before he bought him.
ReplyDeleteIf you dilly dally the price will go up the nearer you get to the end of the transfer window. They aren't stupid I'd say they are over to talk to rogers about his contract.
ReplyDeleteIf he did sign we'd be told he was a lifelong Liverpool supporter!
ReplyDeleteI must admit I empathise with some of your frustrations; but hoping Suarez gets injured just to prove a point to the owners.....? Really....?
ReplyDeleteDeep down of course I dont want suarez to get injured and miss any game because we all know we would of been destroyed then, but apparently this seems to be the only way the owners to learn, they must be thinking we have the best player atm in our team so who needs new signings? Its the same story every single year, we just cant and wont buy class while other teams cant stop doing so, so what if we get CL back, do they think we gonna go and win it straight away? We need to win trophies and with this squad we wont do it. Its just sad we have to cry out for this squad depth every T.W.
ReplyDeleteDont see them spending up in January in what is a world cup year targets may be tricky to get depending on who.
ReplyDeleteI hope they do spend now and although i dont see it happening Matuidi Iturbe and Toni Kroos is who i would like to see.
But you are suggesting that LFC have had no plan in this transfer window when it is a fact that none of us know what goes on behind the scenes and that is the way it should be.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, as usual, anything that even remotely criticise Rodgers cannot be true, and the old excuse of 'none of use know what's going on' is wheeled out.
ReplyDeleteFunny how you never use that line when it's something you yourself are criticising. You constantly slate Benitez (when the chance arises), but I never see you say 'we don't know what went on behind the scenes during his reign'.
You'll happily use that excuse to justify things you believe in, but ignore it when you criticise things about LFC you don't like. Funny that.
We hardly get dragged into the media nowadays via the manager? Rodgers knows when to keep his mouth shut and when to open it.
ReplyDeleteRafa was an expert at making himself and LFC look like fools in the media and I would find it very funny if you disagree...
Of all the Tom Hanks movies you could have picked, you picked Larry Crown!? Dios mio!
ReplyDeleteMan City have spent hundreds of millions on transfers since Mansour took over in 2008. In that six years they have won ONE PL title and ONE FA cup.
ReplyDeleteMan Utd in that period have won THREE PL titles and TWO league cups (as much as i hate to quote the mancs success)
My point is there is more to building a successful football team than going out and buying 20mil plus players. If it was that easy both of us could do it.
And i would hardly call the owners a disgrace. They inherited a club on the brink of financial ruin, which had become a laughing stock thanks to our dramatic and very public fall from grace.
they have cleared our debts, put a very good plan into action to redevelop our ground.
They refuse to fall into the trap of burdoning the club once more with enormous debt.
You feel they are not backing the manager, i feel they are, but first and foremost they are backing the club, and ensuring its longterm health so we do not find the club we all love in the disgraceful position Hicks and Gillette left it.
They are are not billionaires but neither do they act like they are. They invested heavily to start and were burned badly. I have no problem with the more sensible approach been taken. They are clearly in the club for the long haul not just a quick profit like so many owners these days. Which can be only a good thing.
How can you say Suarez and Sturbridge probably won't kept it up , I'm sorry but the chances of thoe two and continuo being off form are ridiculous . I don't think we need a goalscoring midfielder I think we need a m'villa type
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling all were going for are loan bids. Pls tell me my intuition is wrong gang.
ReplyDeleteagree. from a NJ native who knows his limits as well. big supporter but not the one.
ReplyDeleteanother very dissapointing article with nowt positive.. New debt free team and renovating a stadium not enough.. Suarez, Couthino and Sturridge, Mignolet and Sakho,, doesn't strike me as tight owners..
ReplyDeleteM Villa/Marchiso Salah/Iturbe,, Montya I reckon 3 out of these five and we would be title challengers if we can keep everyone fit come on FSG get the finger out or lose Suarez and the ability to attract quality players!!!
ReplyDeleteCould also add Luke Shaw too that list but FSG wont sanction the money needed also Michael Bradley are u having a laugh sure Clint Dempsey had better potential enough said
ReplyDeleteIt's a double edged sword though as showing immediate interest may result in them jacking the price up because they see how bad we want the player. Either way I think it's all much more complicated then we could hope to imagination.
ReplyDeleteAnother forward and a ball-winner in central midfielder would be the immediate priorities for me.
ReplyDeleteSterling and Coutinho have done well, but we could definitely use an upgrade there that is closer to the Suarez & Sturridge level, in order that these guys then become top notch squad players, rather than decent first team players.
The lack of athleticism between Gerrard and Lucas is also a glaring flaw in the first team. A new signing now could have 6 months to acclimatize to the league, before taking Lucas' place from the beginning of the new season, after Lucas has already had the opportunity to fulfil his world cup dream.
It has the most scooters in it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for replaying after...8 MONTHS!?
ReplyDelete
