Liverpool are currently linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen attacker Sidney Sam, but would he be a good buy for the Reds? Anfield legend Dietmar Hamann is in two-minds about the German winger.
Reports in the UK this week suggest that Brendan Rodgers is tracking Sam - who allegedly has a bargain €4m buyout clause in his contract - but Leverkusen boss Sami Hyypia is keen to keep hold of the winger. He told Bild:
“I do not do contracts, but the club known my opinion.
"A player like Sid is important for the whole future of the club. If we keep our strong players, we are also attractive for new good players.”
Sporting Director Rudi Voller concedes, however, that keeping 25-year old Sam will be tough:
"We have agreed that we will get together at Christmas, but it will be difficult [to keep him]"
Discussing Sam ahead of England's international friendly with Germany tonight, Hamann told the Daily Mail:
"He [Sam] Has done well for Leverkusen, who want to extend his contract. Some days he looks a world-beater, others he can be in and out. He’s got pace, ability and the open spaces of Wembley will suit him"
Sam can play as a winger or a striker, and that versatility will definitely appeal to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. He's on fire this season too, with 11 goals and 7 assists in in 17 starts so far, which is a great return.
Sam's record in the previous five completed seasons:
2012-13: 5 goals/3 assists in 28 apps.
2011-12: 6 goals/4 assists in 25 apps.
2010-11: 12 goals/6 assists in 39 apps.
2009-10: 11 goals/5 assists in 35 apps.
2008-09: 4 goals/6 assists in 26 apps.
Creditable figures for a winger, but Sam's appearance record is regularly curtailed by injuries, which is a concern. Worth a bid in January...?

For 4M will never happen. Probably would be closer to 20m. But worth a bid, seems to have good skills, and proven ability.
ReplyDeleteHe is a fantastic player when fit. His assist/goal per minute on the pitch record has consistently been outstanding (~100 minutes per end product).
ReplyDeleteHis frequent absences over the last three years have mostly been related to muscle tears and injuries. Even with his injury track record, I would be delighted if we signed him. His exit clause only kicks in next summer and is at 2.5m Euro, next to nothing. Leverkusen might want to sell him for a decent fee this January, and maybe Sterling could go on loan the other way as a bargaining chip?
scored a brilliant goal against lfc in a friendly 2 summers ago, that's all I remember!!
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes! he´s brilliant!
ReplyDeleteConfused with your comment.
ReplyDeleteHe has a buy out clause, which means they have No choice in it. They have to sell if the player wants to leave and a club meet the buyout clause.
Sidney Sam is quality, he's be an absolute steal for the figures claimed.. I love watching the Bundesliga and Leverkusen play the sort of football I'd love to see us playing. Good deal of experience, particularly as he's a CL player.. If we were in the market for an attacker, I'd love it to be him. Hopefully if we're in a similar position as we are now, we'd actually be an attractive proposition for a higher calibre of player.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the case of a bidding war? Purely on players terms then? Or does the club have any say in selling to the highest bidder?
ReplyDeleteIf the case is just on players terms, then definetely worht 4 mil, that's like 2/3 of a shelvey.
Haha! I had a feeling you will know this player, and based on what I ve read about him, hoped you wil llike him!
ReplyDeleteSo basiccaly at the age of 20 he was brought for solid ammount(for Leverkusen) as a young hope and delivered with enough games, but not all of them. Than progressed for the next two years as a starter, and was quite good with injurie problems throughout season when he was suposed to excell. Another year of that than overexcelled this season with probably a lot of hype since they are doing ok in cl and are still hoping to go to knock out stages. We should wait till Jan and see if they go through and how he shows up where it counts and than offer 15-17 mill with the option of keeping him till summer.
ReplyDelete4 mill in the title mean he was bought for that amount
ReplyDelete4 mill in the title mean he was bought for that amount.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see where the two clubs(and some players in particular) were than, and what happened to them since...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, he silenced us but not like a monkey- he's got attitude and class- like Henry. In gentleman kind of way...
as per transfermarkt he is 10 mil euros. left foot attack mid 2nd poss left wing. appears to have a great return.
ReplyDelete'Who allegedly has a €4m buyout clause', meaning that's how much we'd pay if it were true.
ReplyDeleteI voted my post down, please do so to...
ReplyDeleteI was reading three articles, watching two videos and writing couple of posts at the same time... Plus one reefer..
I voted my post down, please do so to!
ReplyDeleteyeah hes class :) feeding kießling constantly with balls - hes fast technically gifted, deadly in front of the goal, and avaliable for around 2m, he can play on the wing or just behind the striker! by the way he already has an international cap for germany! for 2-4m this would be the steal of next summer without any doubt!
ReplyDeleteGood looking kid...good nose for the net...too bad the video shows his goals and not his passes that set-up goals. I would have loved to see that.
ReplyDeleteI think Sam and Sturridge would would have a good chemistry if they had the opportunity to play together..
ReplyDelete4mil is the most you have to pay.
ReplyDeleteThe bidding war would be the platers terms.
Looks mint at Wembley. If we can get him in jan....
ReplyDeleteOff topic - BR needs to expirement more with his CB - perhaps play Sakho further up along side sturridge and Suarez.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive against England... Looks like he's going to Spurs then.
ReplyDeleteSidney Sam???? Sounds like an Australian cartoon character to me.....
ReplyDeleteSame old story for me: we need to be going for attacking players of unquestionable quality, players who can operate at the same level as Suarez and Sturridge at their best. His current season stats would indicate he might just be at that level which would make him an ideal candidate, but is this a fluke or a sign that he's developed into a top quality player for good? If he could produce that kind of assist and scoring rate in the PL for the next few seasons then maybe we're on the right track. Our scouting group seemed like they were on the money with Mkhitaryan and Costa, both players have really performed well, so if they think Sidney Sam is in that same bracket of quality then hopefully they get it right and we can convince the player to come here.
ReplyDeleteI hope that's a joke :-)
ReplyDeleteNow we've all had the opportunity to see Sam in the flesh, what say you Reds? I personally think he looks a real quality player & goes a long way to proving two things! First & foremost it proves Brendan has a real eye for the type of players we desperately need & at the right price! It also proves that most of you, along with a lot of the next generation of fans, don't have a clue what your talking about!! Sam is a proper player, the type most of you would only notice when they're worth 30mill & well out of our reach!!! Reading Jamies articles is always interesting but knowhere near as interesting as the comments that follow & as a supporter of Liverpoll Football Club for more than 30 years, i'm always left wondering if some of you are purple (blue noses in disguise). Brendan Rogers needs time & support which, as long as we can see consistant progress, he deserves! 4mill for Sam... Looks a bargain to me... sign him up Brendan & keep up the excellent work!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYNWA
Didn'tyou see Sakho get 2 goals for France last night?
ReplyDeleteSo?? One of them was a tap in from 2 yards and the other was an own goal.
ReplyDeleteRidiculous suggestion. He should replace Skrtel though, he was immense.
It was a joke, and it wasn't an own goal, other camera angles confirm this. Good on him to get 2, hopefully he can get a few more with Liverpool.
ReplyDeleteA winger that can go on the inside too but he isn't a attacking midfielder a la Coutinho. He likes to hit the by-line more than going inside though. I think he is one of the few prospects who can play well as a winger in this era that is saturated with attacking midfielders, as he has good awareness for a winger. Not a top talent but certainly could bring something to the table here. Worth a go at under £10m me thinks.
ReplyDeleteB Rodgers needs the owners to back him properly in the transfer window with 55-70m in January , as we need these 6 players in January. And team will become top 1-3 side this season instead of top 3-7 side this season.
ReplyDeleteDefensive Players:
1: GK: A Mccarthy(23) Of Reading should be brought to compete and cover Mignolet(25) for next 5-7 years for 4-7M
2: DM: M'Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan should be brought to compete and cover Lucas Leiva(26) for next 2-4 years for 8-12M
Attacking players:
Creative Offensive Centre Midfielders:
3: Koke(21) Of A Madrid Should be brought to club for 15-18M
4: Cabaye(27) Of Newcastle should be brought for 15-18M
These two midfielders should be brought to club to compete with Allen and Henderson for the next 2- 4 years and both these two players should eventually help replace Captain Fantastic S Gerrard.
Attacking pacey quick widemen:
1: M Salah(21) Of Basel should be brought to club for 10-15M to compete and cover Sterling
2: S Sam(25) Of Bayer Leverkusen should be brought to club for 3-7M to compete and cover IBE.
Those 6 players would help club push on again, Mccarthy and M'Vila would bring more steel toughness, class quality competition and depth to defence and in Cabaye, Koke, Salah and Sam club would have 4 class creative players on the same wavelength as Coutinho, Gerrard, Sturridge and Suarez at club
I told you it was in house politics with Rodgers Mcparland etc and young Texiera was used by Rodgers as a scapegoat - disgraceful.
