'It's exciting for us' - Rodgers insists 'fantastic' LFC star is worth €70m. Deluded...?

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez returns from his 10-game suspension today, and according to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, the Uruguayan's value has skyrocketed whilst he's been on the sidelines.

Speaking to the The Telegraph last night, Rodgers observed:

"We are getting a £50-60million [€60-€70m] striker back in the team and that is exciting for us.

"This is a player who can come in and make a difference for us.

"All you can do now is judge him by his performances on the field. The measure for Luis now is on the field"

Suarez is an excellent player, and he may (theoretically) be worth €70m, but I have a hard time believing any club would pay that amount for him, especially with his history of negative behaviour on the field.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson is also excited about Suarez's return, though the former Reds captain still retains a little bitterness towards him for Ivanovic incident:

"I don't think we'll ever forgive what he actually got up to with Ivanovic at the back of last season. It wasn't good, not for my football club.

"But he's still here, which is fantastic. He will be like a new signing coming in for this season. I'm quite sure he will be in that starting line-up at Old Trafford and I think it adds that little extra".

Thompson is wrong here; Many LFC fans probably forgave Suarez five seconds after he sunk his teeth into Ivanovic, and such is the blind faith in Suarez, many won't have even cared about the incident.

Old Trafford will be a cauldron tonight, and United's players and fans will probably do their best to wind Suarez up. Let's hope he keeps his head...

  1. as much as i hate Suarez, it feels good to have him back in the Team, as long as were paying his wages, we should use him as often as possible!
Get rid of him asap next jan/summer

  2. Even though his on field antics are the worst at times, his ability on the ball is sheer class. I think he'll give a tactical facelift to us and also bring back the spark which we lost due to Coutinho's injury. Hopefully, we can win the match today and show the ManUre that its time somebody knocks them of their f**king perch, eh?

  3. Suarez is worth 50m. Its not deluded.

He will never be forgiven totally but as long as he is scoring and helping the team i will be behind him. Hopefully after a good season we will get a good amount for him in the summer which we can use for a good replacement when he leaves.

  4. Two seasons ago Suarez was a danger in every game, but very wasteful in front of goal, goalposts needing fresh paint jobs after every game.
Last season he was prolific, and has pretty much kept Uraguay in contention for the WC by himself. So purely in footballing terms, if he continues his form from last season, I can easily see a bid of 50-60 mil.
As a liability he is unrivaled in the prem league. Will this affect his valuation? For prem league clubs I think yes, his trouble with the media and on the pitch would innevitably be brought into any equation. But outside of England I think there would be more than one club willing to shell out in Jan for a non CL tied striker of his ability, and if his form continues through to the summer, i think there will be astronomical money coming in for him.

  5. £50m yes, but £60 (€70m for the clubs in Europe that may be interested)? I doubt it.

  6. Not all clubs live by your high moral standards, JK. I don't think we'd have a problem getting a hefty sum for Suarez. Club owners like the ones who own Monaco, Real and PSG just want to have their galactico team extensions of their own ego. As for Ivanovic, I think you'll find most fans think biting him was obviously wrong but that the length of the suspension was all wrong. But all that's over now. Just like you I just hope he can keep his cool tonight. If he doesn't it would be another loss coming out of a meaningless match in a meaningless competition against mid-table opposition.

  7. A lot i think will depend on how the top CL clubs do in their groups, and if there are any injuries. Come Jan a world class non cup tied striker could be a premium for some clubs.

  8. The incident was bad but if that's 'forgivable' what about his comments throughout the summer showing that he was desperate to leave for one of our rivals in the Premier League? Can that be overlooked? Probably. As soon he gets on that pitch all would be forgotten. If he helps us get into top 4 this season I wouldn't mind if we got rid. If we had purchased Erikson we wouldn't be relying on one or two players and start having real strength in depth.

  9. I can tell you I didn't forget the way Suarez and his agent behaved last summer. If he is focused now and gives his all for us, I'll support him the same way I support everyone else but I will not mind should he leave at any given time in the future. As long as the deal is good for us and, hopefully, we spend whatever money we get for him wisely.

  10. I agree but would like to know which player can replace him.

  11. Exactly, and I'm sure that is what Liverpool where thinking. We'll stand firm and show fans that we won't be selling our best players, when Jan comes along and big offer comes in we'll see what happens.

  12. Has whether or not he will shake Evra's hand been mentioned yet?

  13. Totally agree. Use as much of him as possible. As long as he is scoring goals and helping Liverpool to win games I will just be able to forgive him just a little bit. What he had done in the summer was most unforgiveable. There are right way of doing things and clearly what he had done was not the right way.

  14. Yes I think he is worth 70 million, especially if Bale is worth 95 million. Would he be sold for that? No. More likely to be a maximum of 50 million.

  16. Worth every penny, if Falcao is worth 60m E, Cavani 64M E, and Bale 100m E, Suarez is worth at least 110M Euro. Taking Bale out of the equation, 70M on the top, 60M E on the low end. If he has a phenomenal season (i.e Ajax numbers) and WC, it could go up still.

Good news though, he's hungry and it's a WC year, least WC year 49 goals in 48 games.

Don't worry, he'll mend all the broken hearts.

  17. well i may be going over old ground here but did luis ACTUALLY bite ivanovic?i mean did he leave a mark on his arm cos if he did then why wasnt it on every twitter feed and fb page showing the alleged bite?he obviously attempted to bite ivan but did he actually succeed?not that it makes much difference now but like the racist allegations im not so sure either can be conclusively proved.just sick of the lazy media stating these things as fact.

  18. Some report said BR mention he is hungrier than ever. (Which meant this time he may not just bite.)

Walking Dead Season 4 start today?????

  19. I joke - just comparing to Bale though - still boggles my mind. For purely footballing considerations - IMO, Suarez is worth more than bale, hence that valuation. But Bale for purely footballing reasons is worth nowehere near $100m.

  20. no footballer is worth 100 mill for footballing reasons...

  21. .One thing is for certain, Liverpool games are much more entertaining with Suarez than without, Bar the New Castle and Fulham games last season, even though on paper the results have been good, he is missed. I'm sure there'd be a few more goals, and well, lets face it, you never know what Suarez is going to do next (in a good way), that mystique is welcome back.
Let's hope there's an early goal to set the tone - preferably with some sort of Suarez involvment

  22. Messi is, Ronaldo is definitely close. Their individual contributions are enough to get their clubs to the later rounds of CL, and get bums on seats, never mind the merchandising etc.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I didnt think of Messi as a footbaler- he is an allien... And Ronaldo is worth it only with proper use, and I think Fergie was the only able to use him without damaging the team..

    ReplyDelete
  24. He did say 50-60m which i think is fair.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If no club is willing to pay the +£50 fee that Suarez is worth, then they just don't get him - simple as.

    ReplyDelete
  26. How is Ronaldo damaging the team at Real??

  27. Liverpool tried the whole 'good of the game' approach, first with the ridiculous hire of Hodgson to appease the British press, and then the equally ridiculous 'buy British' policy afterwards under Dalglish.

Let some other clubs focus on doing 'the right thing' for a bit, and follow their lead, rather than continuing to harm our own club to make everybody else happy.

Should a massive bid come in that enables the club to move forwards in his absence (and £40m in this day and age isn't that), then by all means move Suarez on immediately. As long as that isn't the case though, I would just hold onto a legit World Class player, and continue to build around him.

  28. Jaimie, I think your right on target with the idea that most LFC fans will forgive Suarez almost immediately.

The only way they won't is if he doesn't perform. But in the world of "what have you done for me lately", LFC fans will quickly look beyond his past transgressions if he performs well on the field and the team wins.

In terms of the price, I think it's all dependent on the situation/market. If there are a few teams involved, then the price will jump... but if there's only one team involved in the bidding, the price is probably going to be in the 40-45m range.

  29. The only thing that can mean he is not worth that kind of money is the trouble he causes. Other than that if we are talking about Torres at £50m and Bale at over £80m, £60m for Suarez is a snip.

  30. Suarez is clearly an A hole and I for one had been saying as much before the bite. But I couldn't care less about why he got banned just that he deservedly did get banned. What I can't forgive is his wantaway attitude. All the whining and lying he did for the summer. As for the bite, there are few fans that slate Defoe about that if he is scoring goals or not, so if Suarez scores and wins us games I couldn't care less about the bite. I want sing his name though for his actions over the summer.

  31. Bale fee is well over the top, I agree. Even considering that fee, can't agree with anyone paying near that for Suarez as the man only has one good full season of form in one of the top leagues in Europe. The talent may well be there but got to prove it again and again over seasons to justify such a premium fee.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'd rather he wasn't here but If he scores or does well in a LFC shirt, I'll celebrate but not for him, but for the team and the club. Never was a big fan of him and his antics before this summer/Ivanovic and looks like I never will be, after last summer.
