'He's incredible, but..." - BR explains why LFC won't sign 'wonderful' €30m maestro.

Four years after leaving Anfield, Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is still revered by Liverpool fans, many of whom remain hopeful that Spaniard will return to the club sooner rather than later. Alas, it appears that a dream return is not on the cards, with both Alonso and Brendan Rodgers putting the stoppers on any possible transfer.

Alonso - who cost Real Madrid €30m in 2009 - has been regularly linked with a return to Liverpool, and in April the Spaniard who admitted last year that he 'misses' Anfield - hinted that a Liverpool move could be a possibility'. He said:

"I have not decided where to play in the future. My return to Anfield? I had an amazing time during my long experience in Liverpool with the jersey of the Reds."

Reds legend Dietmar Hamann would love to see Alonso return, but he's not sure it will ever happen. He tweeted recently:

"I'd love to see Xabi Alonso back at Anfield. He's a pleasure to watch, but I'm not sure whether there is any truth in it. I can't really see it happening"

Well, ehen asked over the weekend if there is any chance of Alonso returning to Liverpool, Rodgers told reporters:

"Xabi Alonso was an incredible player for this club, a wonderful role model, but he is in a different moment in his career with Real Madrid"

When quizzed two weeks ago about the possibility of a summer transfer to Chelsea or Liverpool, Alonso gave reporters a similarly unambiguous response:

"The Premier League? No. There's no way, no chance"

So there you have it: all the available evidence suggests that Alonso's return is no-go. It's a shame, but it's probably for the best. The Spaniard is a bona-fide world class midfielder, but I'd hate to see him return to Anfield and spend most of his time on the bench (due to squad rotation/preference for younger players etc).

  1. he is to old and his wages would be to high ,the fact than he his a great player dose not even the issue as far as fsg are concerned, now if they could get him for free and he would play for peanuts maybe we would be interested

Shame really, but I agree best to move forward and look back at the past, also BR has said he looking for a LB and a attacking player and that's it.... :)

  3. Gerrard now plays the deep-playmaker role superbly well. I'm all for competition for places, but to have 1 of the 2 sat on the bench earning £100k p/week plus doesn't seem feasible considering we're reducing the wage bill and there are other areas begging to be strengthened...

  4. He also said he'd replace anybody who leaves. Which could be anyone from a long list including Reina, Skrtel, Suarez, Henderson, Downing, Assaidi, Spearing...

  5. Xabi Alonso became a wanker the minute Rafa Benitez told him he was up for sale, and he's only compounded that status since he's been at Madrid. I'm personally chuffed that there's no truth in the rumours that he's coming back to Liverpool. He'd be a step backwards for a fairly high salary and a short-term solution to a problem that needs a more energetic solution.

  7. if he forces hendo out ,he his finished as far as i am concerned, nice to see him giving mixed messages about suarez he really is starting to look like a buffoon ,

  8. Gee, don't exaggerate or anything. Henderson improved last season but he is hardly a world-beater integral to LFC's success. If he goes, so be it. It won't make a shred of difference to the club's forward progress.

  9. One fact is forgotten. World Championship next year. If he want to be in squad, he must play regularly in a league and CL, just as Reina. Maybe we could get him next summer when we get CL, and he's got one year on contract with Real Madrid.

  11. All the LFC Fans hopes Fernando Torres record will be break with Real Madrid and Arsenal or else clubs this season.Good value is 55milion pound or 40 milion plus Gonzalo Higuin or Jack Wlshere. It is look like they now is scared clubs. We all know Real Madrid have an extra budget after failed to get sign Gareth Bale from Spurs.

When we talks about Attacking Midfielder, it is meaning Downing, Borini, Henderson and Lucas never funtion very well and succesfully. We need to find out new players to ship out all of them.Lucas is very perfect as holding ball but not too good when assist foward players. He cannot score more than 5 goal per season like others flops players. We need to bring more talented players who can firing many goal and protect the fortress very solid and tough. Before transfers window nearly to be slam, much better atleast LFC can release out Downing and Borini first.I confident same mistake will repeat again if LFC still want to using Passenger players who get high salary. They all don’t having good skill but the pressure is still need to used this players because high payment need to playing every week and the cheapest players who have good quality as Assaidi, Coates can st down on the bench. Why? They will not effect the wage bill whether playing or not playing.LFC will solve their main problem if they ship out deadwood players. Please bring in Bernard and Soldado to strengthen the foward areas with 1 or 2 new defender or centreback.Mamadou Sakho, Toby Alderweireld, Kryiakos Papadoulos will be great signing for new centreback candidates.

  12. hes not the worst player at the club by a mile, they are plenty worse than him also rodgers stated last week we are finished with squad players now we are after marque signings, how many fans would class a LB as a marque signing, and on another subject his latest comments about suarez gave out mixed messages to say the least,i think hes losing the plot,i think if he praises the average players enough he thinks he will convince us they are world class,i do not know about kissing the blany stone i think he swallowed it

Rodgers said Suarez has a value if someone matches it he will look at it, then after he said it doesn't mean he would accept it though. If he asked a question then he has to answer it, It's normal. Also we need a LB as cover for erinque, our marque signing would most likely be attacking wise.

  14. he said we were finished with squad players ,now we are not, every time he opens his mouth he lies, i do not think he would know the truth if it hit him on the back of the head, and what about the two attackers we have just signed were are they going to play, maybe we could loan them out

  15. liverpool4life56511:17 am, July 22, 2013

How do you know this LB won't be first team?? Then erinque as back up. As you said in your first line, "we were finished with squad players" I would hardly call what he saying lies...he wants to add quality to the ranks as he said in today's interview. Lets see who he brings in.

  16. It'd be a great move for Liverpool, but a bad move for Alonso. Also, is it just me, or did BR get new teeth implants?

  17. Jason, stop antagonising people with endless use of 'lol' in replies. This particular reply is a sniping reply; it is not an attempt to engage in meangingful discussion. 'Lol' is now added to the word filter.

  18. Of course Henderson is not a world beater but he can still improve even further. I'm surprised you wouldn't mind seeing him leave after such a drastic change to the contributions he makes in terms of attacking. It's not about individuals, it's a matter of principle. After several months of being the teams most effective players and one of the first names on the team sheet, BR has absolutely no right to sell him. As Jason pointed out, there are far worse players that should go, three of which are BR's own signings.

  19. he has he just needs the medallion and a sheepskin and he will be a ringer for del boy,

  20. 3 mate from what i have seen of our two spanish signings ny the end of the season we can add at least one of them as well

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree that there are worse players who could leave, but my point is that if Henderson did leave, I doubt it would make any difference to LFC. I personally would prefer him to stay; it's important to have a strong British core at the heart of the team, but it will not be some irrevocable disaster if Henderson actually leaves.

  22. ah the dreaded word filter, and jaimie it was a kind way of saying i do not agree with one thing he said

    ReplyDelete
  23. it will show a clear lack of knowledge on what is a good player and a bad player by our manager, and also show that rodgers butt licks is own signings ,to prove he was right about signing them ,rather than doing what is better for the team, egomaniac

Erm BR hasn't said he wants rid of hendo first of all, second bum licks his signings? Borini(benched) Allen has been benched too, assaidi benched or reserves. How do you come to the theory he "bum licks" he signings?:)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I get you now and I agree with those points.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hope not. I'm still backing Rodgers, the ultimate thing for me would be selling/shunning Hendo after his performances last season. As JK said it would not be a disaster, but IMO we are a better team when he is playing. I'd take the same approach if this was Borini or Allen instead of Henderson.

Other than that I'm happy for Rodgers to switch things up (Suarez + Reina possible out). He has made a few mistakes so far which have cost us, but we should be better this time around. Also he can't afford Aspas/Alberto/Mignolet to flop, especially Mignolet, he will get the sack if that happens.

But we will see how things go :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. assaidi benched he never got a chance ,and to say allen got benched well he may well have but everytime rodgers thought he could get away with playing him he did,at the cost of henderson ,rodgers tried to get rid of henderson last season and they have been rumours that he could leave this, never heard any rumours about allen going ,if allen starts ahead of henderson against stoke it stinks of favoritism ,lets see how many assists and goals did allen have in the league last season,oh thats easy none,i mean come on none ,god he made carragher look creative, and before people start going on about him playing some time as a DM the an cannot tackle either

    ReplyDelete
  28. m8 fsg will not sack him hes there puppet ,they say sell he says

    ReplyDelete
  29. Presumably you can provide some kind of evidence to back up this statement...?

  30. If you're in the pub having a discussion, and someone laughs in your face when you make a point, is that person disagreeing with you in a 'kind way'? No, he's taking the pi$$.

    ReplyDelete
  31. no evidence just intuition ,unless he totally bombs he will be here for years why would they risk getting a manager like rafa who tells it how it is,when you have a yes man they can do what they like with him and he will except it eg when he 1st came as manager he stated he would only come if he had control of transfers, now we have a commitee

    ReplyDelete
  44. course they dont read what you say but have a bit of faith and then it might sound that you actually enjoy supporting l,pool. because believe it or not the second half of the season we did improve. onwards and upwards with optimism.

  45. i heard he lost all his teeth smoking crack

    ReplyDelete
  46. i applied for liverpool alnogside rogers but they said i was over qualified

    ReplyDelete
  47. Transfer window is closed and we are DOOMED!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. rafa bought aquillani dossena and many more flops give rodgers a chance he has none of the finances of previous managers but still improved us last year dont be so negative the only reason manure chelski and the rest get away with buying flops is they can afford to make mistakes were no longer in the same position

    ReplyDelete
  49. Alonso is an injury crock, if he had stayed a Liverpool he would of been retired years ago because he though a good passer was always too slow , premier league is to fast for him and playing I sprain where if you play for barca or real you are guaranteed champions league every year

    ReplyDelete
  50. we improved because most of the teams we played had nothing to play for ,a bit like ourselves

    ReplyDelete
  51. lol he has spent close to 100 million in one year

    ReplyDelete
  52. how much as rodgers spent close to 100 million in a year

    ReplyDelete
  53. glad you see it that way

    ReplyDelete
  54. He is world class, we never really replaced him and since we have a lot of good youngsters coming through they can learn a lot from him if he returns, but I know this wont happen
