Dead Deal: Boss insists 'world class' £20m LFC target not for sale. Still a chance...?

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has emphatically dismissed the possibility that exciting wing-star Xherdan Shaqiri will leave the Bundesliga club this summer.

Yesterday, multiple sources the Germany and the UK (including the Liverpool Echo) reported that Brendan Rodgers is eyeing a £20m move for Shaqiri, but earlier this evening, Rumenigge told reporters:

"Nobody has called about Shaqiri. Right now there are no plans (to sell).

"The coach is completely satisfied with him. I think we will go into the season with the current squad."

Shaqiri - recently hailed as 'world class' by Munich's Sporting Director Mattias Sammer - made only 17 starts for Bayern last season, and the €37 signing of Mario Gotze will make it even tougher for the Swiss star to establish himself in the first team.

To be honest, the idea of Shaqiri coming to Liverpool seemed tenuous at best, but money talks, and although Rumenigge says Bayern have no plans to sell, things can change very quickly in football, and there's always the possibility that the Swiss international may ultimately decide that a move away would be beneficial.

Discussing Alcantara's transfer on ESPN last night, Reds legend Steve Nicol observed:

"If you pay €25m for a player [Alcantara], it means you're going to play him, and I'm sure there will be some Bayern players looking over their shoulders"

Shaqiri must surely be one of those players who'll be 'looking over his shoulder'. If he stays at Bayern, he'll have to compete against a whole host of midfielders, including Alcantara, Robben, Ribery, Mueller, Emre, Gotze, Gustavo, and Kroos. The 21-year old made just 17 starts last season, so realistically, how likely is that to change this season?

Shaqiri has already stated that he wants regular first-team football next season, but how is that going to happen when the competition at Bayern is so formidable?

A loan deal for Shaqiri makes perfect sense, especially in a World Cup year. He may not end up at Liverpool, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is at a different club come September 1st.

  1. How good is the lad, don't know much about him but think 25 for HM would have been safer money then £20 mill on this guy. What's with all these midfielders? What's the chances of us getting benteke?

  2. If LFC get's him that's a big statement. As much as there is like no chance Suarez is staying, the deadline LFC gave him is this Sunday or Monday. With those two and a few good signing LFC looks very good. Also, as much Steve Nicol and some of the pundits don't realize is Aspas is a very tricky player and he is good. Another Sturidge.

  3. not strictly a dead deal as we have also said Suarez isn`t for sale, but we all know he will be sold.

  6. I hope we do sign him because loaning isn't Rodgers cup of tea and he doesn't play the loaned players to their potential or even to their preferred and orthodox places they usually play at. There's a very less chance of it but he might even land up at LFC and nothing could be better than that IMO with the current state of signings but 20 millions is over the top for him.

  7. benteke doesn't fit in with rogers MO for a player, ill give Rogers respect that he has the courage of his own conviction buying all these small more technical players. And if the weather was baking hot all season id be prone to agree with him.My big concern is that come winter in the wind and rain where the climate means you can pressure more and play with a higher tempo we will get bullied out of games.....you have to earn the right to play and some teams wont allow that ..Its no coincidence that the bigger players in the prem ie Bentake lualua and few others all has field days against liverpool

  8. they should hurry it up ....... all the good players are getting sold worst possible case is another dempsey fiasco and we have only sturridge and borini to rely upon

i would like him (if player exchange deal) rather than Higuaín

  13. If he is serious about wanting first team football, like he says. Then surely he will want to move, even if it is just on loan.
I think Liverpool should at least test the waters with it. Would be a shame to miss out, simply because they didn't try.

  14. I really hope Rodgers puts in a bid u never know coz he just has too much competion for those midfield places will become even more difficult with thiago signing..cmon Rodgers its better to try and fail rather thn not try at ol

  15. Yes, of course my base it that only. Do you know of any other loan deal he made and it ended it somewhat different to that of Sahin?

  16. nope and nor can i be bothered to look into this loan transfers from his previous clubs. But it does seem a bit quick to judge Rogers as a poor loaning manager (what ever that means) because of one mistake. But i guess that is what we are here for, very quick to judge!

    ReplyDelete
  17. No, I am not judging him quick but its a FACT that till now all his loan transfers have failed even if it has been only ONE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. So after one mistake he should never sign loan players again? So what happens if he makes a mistake with transfers, we should never sign anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  19. No, where did I say that? He basically signs players who he wants stay in the team for longer and not just for one season. So, I don't see the logic behind getting players for one season and he hasn't brought players as short term solutions. He wants to create a team for the future as well as present and loaning players doesn't help you in the long run, if you know what I mean.

  20. I completely disagree, the loan market is a great market. You don't loan players for one season, it is more try before you buy. If Sahin would have worked out, guaranteed he would have been top of our buying list this summer. Thanks to loaning him before we managed to save the whole process of buying him and for him to be a flop.
