Italy Raid? - LFC make official enquiry about €13m Serie A striker. Squad-filler...?

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Juventus striker Alessandro Matri, with a view to bringing him to Andfield to bolster the club's attacking options.

According to Silvio Berlusconi-owned SportMediaSet:

"Liverpool want Alessandro Matri, and plan to buy him with the money made from the sale of Luis Suarez.

"The British club has sent scouts to produce a report on Matri, and he will not leave for less than €13m".

Sky Sports Italia further reported:

"Liverpool have stepped up their search for another striker by requesting information about the availability of Alessandro Matri. The Juventus striker was the subject of an enquiry earlier today from the Reds"

The arrivals of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente this summer would seem to suggest that the Italian internationals's days are numbered at Juventus, but there are many other strikers out there (arguably) preferable to Matri, whose recent goalscoring stars are seriously underwhelming:

* Last season: 10 goals/2 assists in 33 apps.
* 2012-13: 11 goals/4 assists in 36 apps.

This would be just like Liverpool, though: buy a striker that no one else is really after, but ignore superior goalscorers available for similar prices (i.e. Wilfried Bony).

Matri is back in pre-season training with Juve at the moment, and when taking time out on Monday, he told reporters:

"It’s been a tough start, but it’s always nice to get going again and think about the new campaign that’s on the horizon”

Worth a bid to add further depth to the squad...?

  2. Wrong guy for the money! There are so many better choices. every time I watch Serie A games it looks like a flop contest and a bunch of whiners. Come on; get on with Benteke and forget these kinds theatrical weenies!

  3. 10mil or even a bit below should get Matri.. Very solid player and adds an extra dimension to our game. I'm more than happy with Sturridge starting and this guy coming off the bench..

    BS, why would we sign a player that 28 and for that fee to be a "squad filler" I don't believe we are after him.

  5. i thought we were doing well, new attitude to over paying for average players, BUT IF this story ever materialised as true, then, yaaaaawwwn...have we really learned from past mistakes. gary hooper from the mighty celts would be a steal at 5.5m. a poacher and he can play around the box. like wanyama going to southampton, if norwich/qpr/west ham get him, WHAT A WASTE!!!!!!! 13m euros for a squad player???? we have enough over expensive flops in the squad already, without adding more.

  7. No, just not him please. I think there're even more better options than this guy. Go for Cardozo if you really wanna sign Matri.

  8. It always amazes me how people can get so upset and angry about a rumour which has no chance of being true. Keep your outrage for the players we truly sign... you'll live longer

  9. Fuck that. Suarez for Higuain plus £15M. Kills two birds with one stone stone with a little left over. Plus prevents Arsenal from signing either player. Machiavellian simplicity.

  10. I say we bid for Mata, and chuck in Suarez, seeing as it looks like Mourinho wants rid.

  11. ...surely not. This does not fit the FSG code of youth, doesnt look like the type of player to play in Rodgers team. And thats not to mention is goal scoring record. Why waste the money?

    Cant help but feel the transfer news is getting seriously saturated with Suarez leaving and not much on players coming in. Would realy like him to leave soon; so we can concentrate on what we're going to spend the money on. couple more reports on Bernard today... thats nice to hear

  12. I know its off-topic but I just read an article about Chelsea offering Juan Mata plus cash for Rooney. Its turns out that its not true but I couldnt help thinking, "What if Chelsea offered 20m plus Mata for Suarez?". Would ye take that?

  13. No, just no. Not even for £5m. He looked half decent before Juve but hasn't really progressed. Already am jealous of their transfers-in for the past season or two (Vidal, Pirlo, Llorente, Vidal, Pogba, etc), now they want to sell their previous flops for a considerable fee (they did buy a truckload of flops before this good period), pffft.

    Suarez, what a actor:

  14. He was on fire at the start of his career at Juve but seriously fazed out. I can't see him making a big impact for us as he tends to seriously fade in and out of games. I'm starting to worry a little here tho about our options of replacing Suarez (if he goes). My preference was Bony; gone. Negredo has been touted; he's going to city. Lukaku looks to be back in favor at chelsea. Benteke; the asking price would be 25+mil pounds and if that doesn't work out for us then we look like idiots again - personally think his price is in the 16mil pound area at most. Leandro Damião could be a nice proposition as it would be great to see him and Coutinho combine! My preference now would be Lukaku, Damião, then Benteke in that order

  18. angry? not at all dear boy, you still have NOT read it correctly. i would say that the words 'BUT IF', are a CLEAR indication that i am not drawn by falsehoods entirely. JUST BECAUSE CAPITAL LETTERS ARE USED, DOES NOT MAKE A PERSON ANGRY!!!!!!!! ok? i purposely use lower case throughout as i cannot be bothered to keep switching. good lad.

  19. i like it. Wish it was true, Jaun Mata is the little engine that could. The Spaniard is in prime form at the moment. With Eden Hazard on their books they won't miss Mata's creativity. I strongly feel that if we sell Saurez we should sell him to a team in a different league. I'd hate to see him , score against us or even ......dive against us or even ......bite anyone on our team. We'd have to sell him so to a team far far away so he doesn't come back and haunt us. If we can't do that then we should just keep him and all his goals.

  20. not really concerned about this rumor/ speculation over Alessandro Matri. More than likely we won't be getting this player. He would make a poor replacement for a top class player in Luis Saurez. I understand some might think Liverpool might be interested in Matri since he plays for Serie A Champions Juventus. It is automatically believed that his class and skill level would be really high up there. I see him as a player no longer wanted by his club after the inclusion of Llorente and Tevez. I don't think that Matri would really score as many goals as Saurez did last season.Here are some reasons why i think Matri will not succeed at Liverpool were we to sign him.

    (1) He will need a full season to get used to the pace and style of English football.

    (2) At 28 he is already too old for FSG or Brendan Rodgers which is why we didn't see a Dempsey signing last summer , also the reason why we are not going to see a Xavi Alonso Anfield reunion.

    (3) There is already a terrible track record with Italian players who play for Liverpool FC. Previous players like Alberto Aquilani, Andrea Dossena, and Fabio Borini (to an extent) have all failed at Liverpool. Matri might miraculously succeed where others have failed. But who wants to take that chance?

    Rumor has it that Rodgers has made a bid for a player whom he really really wants. That player is Alvaro Morata of Real Madrid. It is a bid in the neighborhood of 12million pounds. Pursuit of 20 year old who had an exciting tournament for Spain in the Fifa Euro under 21 tournament in Israel . FSG such creatures of habit would be more comfortable financing the acquisition of Morata than that of Matri.

  21. Also really interested in learning the name of the artist of the song included in the Alessandro Matri video clip. I have watched it many times just to hear the music. If anyone knows it please let me know via email (cdakobundu@yahoo.com)
