Last night, Liverpool FC officially confirmed the £7.6m signing of Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, but is it a good deal for the club? Reds legend Steve Nicol is not so sure.
When asked yesterday if Liverpool had done the right thing signing Aspas, Nicol told ESPN:
"I’m not quite sure.
"If Suarez doesn’t go, then Suarez and Sturridge have to start. That means you’ve got Coutinho, Borini, Sterling, Aspas etc.
"A lot of these guys are all the same type of player.
"He [Aspas] may be a good player, but how is he going to get a chance if Suarez stays? If you’re Aspas, then you’re desperate for Suarez to leave".
To be fair, it's a good point: if Suarez stays, then where do all these players fit in? Suarez is worshipped at Anfield by fans and Brendan Rodgers alike, which means he is guaranteed to start practically every game that he's fit.
Sturridge - if fit - will also feature heavily, so where does that leave Aspas? Rodgers cannot fit Suarez, Borini, Coutinho, Aspas, Henderson, Downing, Shelvey, Alberto, Sturridge, Sterling, Suso and - for the sake of argument - Mykhitaryan into the same team, which means there are likely to be some frustrated players warming the bench next season.
Of course, competition can ultimately be a good thing, but let's just hope we don't end up with another Oussama Assaidi situation, with Aspas barely used throughout the season. For some reason, I get an Assaidi vibe about him, and given his fine form last season, it will be disappointing if Rodgers wastes Aspas' undoubted talent.
If Suarez stays, then there will be serious competition in midfield and up front, with all of the following vying for places:
* Suarez
* Sturridge
* Aspas
* Coutinho
* Henderson
* Downing
* Allen
* Gerrard
* Lucas
* Suso
* Sterling
* Alberto (if he signs)
* Mykhitaryan (If he signs)
* Borini
* Shelvey (If he stays)
Gerrard, Suarez and (probably) Lucas will always start if fit, so that leaves TWELVE players fighting for the THREE remaining spots. Is that healthy competition? Is it possible to keep all those players happy?
Additionally, there is no Europe next season, so it's just the league, FA Cup and League cup, and I doubt certain players will be happy just being pulled out of mothballs for the pointless Capital One Cup.

Rubbish. Regardless of his antics most players would want to play with Suarez if he stays. We need a strong squad and its up to players to prove they're worth a place whoever it is.
ReplyDeleteGiven Nicol only ever sees negatives I'm wondering if him and Jason. Carr are related - maybe it's the same person!!
My front three would be Suarez,Sturridge,aspas. Then coutinho behind, coutinho vision and the work rate of them 3 upfront. Would be good. But competition keeps everyone on there toes, if they don't play well they get dropped.... Or three upfront could be Suarez,aspas,mhiktaryan :-) nice options if we sign mhiktaryan
ReplyDeleteNo what it means is Liverpool have a great squad of attacking players, hardly a crisis is it???
ReplyDeleteman city managed with dzeko, tevez and aguero and they are looking to add more.
ReplyDeleteYou obviously didn't get the article, did you? Please read without the Suarez blinkers on. Nicol is not saying that Aspas doesn't want to play with Suarez; he's merely suggesting that with so many players in the same position, he will find it hard to get a regular chance in the team.
ReplyDeleteYou can say that again thats dam rubbish.Only what yu want is liverpool go for this coming season without players.idiot.
ReplyDeleteCity haven't managed it. Dzeko has made it clear several times that he is unhappy being a regular benchwarmer, hence why he is heavily linked with a move away.
ReplyDeleteBreaking news: Liverpool now have too many quality players, the Daily Mail says Liverpool in crisis and up the swanny.................LOL.
ReplyDeleteWho said it was a crisis? Why must everything be one ridiculous extreme or the other? having competition is a good thing, but it can also lead to unhappy players. Exploring how all these players will fit into the team is a valid exercise. Just burying your head in the sand and blindly thinking everything will be okay doesn't solve the actual problem, which is how does Rodgers keep all these players happy? It doesn't just happen magically happen. There are countless examples of players becoming unhappy as a result of squad rotation, or did I just imagine that?

ReplyDeleteIn BPL playing tiki taka style is a bit dangerous to the player (often injured by opponent). Look at gunner player...
even regular players are linked constantly and can be unhappy, so its a part and parcel of football, hardly a problem. I find it astonishing that people have double standards regarding Liverpool. On one hand they moan for the lack of depth and transfer activity and on other hand this nonsense. For some, Liverpool can do no right.
ReplyDeleteBR will be very happy to have that problem.
ReplyDeleteIt's not double standards, it's highlighting a valid issue, which you and others attempt to belittle because you just don't want to face it.
ReplyDeleteAs I've repeatedly stated, competition is good, but you have to also consider where everyone is going to fit in across a whole season. If Rodgers just ignored the issue and just hoped for the best, it would be a disaster.
If Suarez stays, then there will be serious competition in midfield and up front, with all of the following vying for players:
* Suarez

* Aspas

Is that healthy competition? Is it possible to keep all those players happy?
Liverpool in crisis again..............YAWN, we have heard it all before as you say!!!
ReplyDeleteNicol seems to forget Stewie Downing was a regular for us last year. If Aspas is not an improvement on him, then why did we sign him at all? He also says Suarez and Sturridge play up top together but we don't even play with two strikers, we play with three! Football players know these days that they won't play all games. If he's good enough, Aspas will get his games. Suarez, Coutinho et al, all need a rest sometimes.
ReplyDeleteBR wants to send some players out on loan, suso,sterling,shelvey might be those players :-)
ReplyDeletenicol and lawreson never say anything good about the reds
ReplyDeleteIts a simple logic. Players who wants first team football will have to try harder because of the competition. Good players will stay, unhappy or not so good players will go at the end of the season. Happens every year at every club. You can't substitute one for one player every year with 100% guarantee of successful replacement. In big clubs several options are tried out before arriving at exact mix.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, but similarly, when there is too much competition, it can also mean good players are left on the sidelines. What happens if everyone is playing well? Some players in good form will inevitably have to be left out. Take Dzeko, for example: whenever called upon last season, he seemed to score goals, but he still got dumped on the bench regularly. Now, he wants to leave.
ReplyDeleteso what if suarez goes ,are we not going to sign anyone better than aspas,if we do not why not? and if we do it will be the same situation he will have to fight for his place
ReplyDeleteActually, they do.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's always one of the other. Hopefully due to the potential depth we may have we can really push on both Cups.
ReplyDeleteSuarez is a world class player. At the moment, Aspas in a nobody with potential. He'll have to earn a place in the side...just like players used to...and thank god we're starting to get back to such ways.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I doubt Rodgers is selling the club to potential players by saying 'Come to Liverpool! I'll play you in the Carling Cup, but you'll have to sit on the bench in the Premier League!'
ReplyDeletei believe having Suarez and Sturridge on the the team and adding more players is not bad to me.all we should be targeting is how we can get back to the champions league next season.lets not forget when Suarez had a problem and getting a replacement then was a big problem,so why not getting all the best players if getting them will make us qualify and forget any angry player who can not perfume and outshine by his team mate complaining.whatever we're doing lets not forget our love for this club.
ReplyDeleteQuite right Jas!!!..............Show us you are good enough or sit on the bench, simple eh??
ReplyDeleteWe always talk about being top club. Having more player and a big squad like this is an attribute of contender. Whether player are happy or not is up to the player to prove. After all, it's not like they are not paid for it. All the Champions have the quality player on bench. Chicarito, dzeko, Gomez, higuain, tevez, villa. So at least we have attribute of a champion now.
ReplyDeletejaimie why have you missed allen off the list pleae make my day and tell me hes been sold,or have you come to the same conclusion as me ,that hes no competition ,looking at the names on the list you could sell or loan out downing,susso sterling,borini and shelvey,do we need alberto and mykhitaryan will not be signed unless suarez is sold imo
ReplyDeleteagree but should we be buying players to sit on the bench we have plenty of bench warmers already imo every penny we have for transfers ,should have been spent on players who would or should get straight in the team
ReplyDeleteMy mistake. I've added Allen in, which makes it 12 players fighting for 3 places. That is not healthy competition.
ReplyDeleteAn attacking midfielder will be signed irrespective of whether Suarez stays or goes; Rodgers basically confirmed that himself earlier in the week, when he outlined exactly what players he wants to sign: 2x central defenders, a striker, and an AM.
One or two players may go out on loan, but I doubt they will include Sterling, Suso, Borini or Downing.
well at least they will all get paid , and i thought we were trying to lower the wage bill,so instead of playing 20 player 100 grand a week ,were just going to pay 50 players 40 grand a week lol
ReplyDeletenot going to say a lot here but Mr Nicols has nothing to worry about. Luis Saurez has made it very clear that he wants out I believe he will leave Liverpool. He has given a come and get me plea to Real Madrid. He has shown Liverpool the ultimate form of disrespect after all the club did for him. I think that Suarez will move on for two reasons:
ReplyDelete(1) He has gotten his family into the mix. It is one thing to say that you want out because you are seeking a higher level of competition. Suarez says that he and his family is being hounded in England. He almost wants to say that England is no longer safe for his FAMILY. When a player makes that kind of public statement the club has to get as much for him as possible. It is the only other option.
(2) the second comment he has made recently is that he would like to play for Real Madrid because he wants to play alongside the likes of Christiano Ronaldo. Well Luis what about your teammates at Liverpool? Are they no longer good enough? We all know the answer to that one. Our team can not compete with the buying power of Madrid, so we tend to bring in players who do not have the same star quality of those in Madrid. The policy at Anfield is to buy up and coming stars who will come very cheap and then develop them. Liverpool will not buy anyone as good as Ronaldo any time soon.
The potential problem Mr Nicol has brought up is a none event. Suarez has done enough to force Liverpool's hands he is as good as gone. Borini , Aspas, and Sturridge as the club's three main strikers. Carroll's faith has already been sealed. He too is as good as gone.
As for the midfield Liverpool has always had more players than it needs for midfield positions and that is nothing new. That is why the likes of Shelvy can't get a game. That is old news IMO.
What about a 4-2-3-1 formation?Let us focus on the players we have not on who may be coming in,none of us have crystal balls.
ReplyDeleteSturridge(when fit)/Borini
Coutinho Suarez Aspas
Gerrard Lucas
Enrique Agger Skrtel??? Johnson
He fits in fine the rest are squad players
I think he will deploy the 4-2-2-2 formation with Lucas and Gerrard the midfielders, Coutinho and Mykhtarian the ones constructing the attacks and Suarez and Sturridge as the frontmen. With the others we will have great strength in depth. And as Rodgers stated that they will be going for the all cups and the league also. In case Suarez leaves I would like us to get the Udinese man Muriel.
ReplyDeleteId play coutihno regardless!!!
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that Aspas is said to be a worker in Spain which means he's not gonna take anything for granted and will work for it. Let's hope that with this competition we can qualify for CL and even if there are some players who are upset by the time of the next season, I think they will stay here because if the club goes into the CL then they will have matches to play and I don't think anyone gets so frustrated that they will leave the team by January lol :D
ReplyDeleteexcept sahin last year
ReplyDeletewhat about a 2 6 4 formation lol i need to get a grip its not football manager
ReplyDeleteOMG I forgot about him. I don't even know why he was signed in the first place. I think he thought that LFC were gonna get success and would qualify for the CL but when he saw that it was all falling apart here he jumped the ship so that minimum blame is put onto him.
ReplyDeleteWell this would be ideal!! but maybe a little bit lead defensive options on the bench, would be great to have 2 defenders at the bench (toure + ilori/Kelly/wisdom)
ReplyDeleteYou edited it lol. I was wondering even if you play FM then how do you play 2-6-4 formation LMFAO :D
ReplyDeletemore competition is only a good thing .....
ReplyDeleteand if it look the same next jan we ca put minimum blame on players then as well;-)
ReplyDeleteThen BR is gonna pack his bags am sure ;)
ReplyDeletei know lol;-)
ReplyDeletei agree if we start the same as last season i think he will be gone before then
ReplyDeletei agree wish we had the europa league this year
ReplyDeleteIts better he leaves if that's gonna be the case. But I have a feeling BR is gonna stay for much more longer than we all are expecting him to and that too for good reasons.
ReplyDeletei think rodgers will send either suso or sterling or jorden ibe on loan to gain experience . so there wud be lil less competion as u are suggesting and i guess wid 3 competions to play for next season its good competion for places . these players are all offensive but they give rodgers variety of options to chose from and being a liverpool fan i wud rather want that then depending on 2-3 players to deliver whole season
ReplyDeletehes got to improve on last season thats for sure
ReplyDeleteWe can easily sell Suarez and have enough capable players to win us matches. Aspas and Alberto or Aspas and Mkhitaryan would be great replacements for the gap Suarez could leave.
ReplyDeleteIf we ignore for a moment Alberto and the Mkhi, you have 13 players (or 16 if you also consider Connor Coady, Jordan Ibe and Krizstian Adorjay) vying for 6 places. Of these 16, 6 are still maturing into first team players (Sterling, Suso, Shelvey, Coady, Ibe and Adorjan), so that actually we have only 10 'core', first-team players vying for 6 positions. Furthermore, Sturridge is injury-prone and Suarez is out for the first six matches of the season. I can therefore see Rodgers bringing in one (or even two) more attacking players of the quality of the Mkhi or Christian Eriksen (to add the 20 odd goals that Rodgers has talked about vis-a-vis last season), as well as a defensive mid to provide cover for Lucas. This would bring the number of 'core' first team midfield players to 12-13 to fill 6 positions, which is probably essential to allow a club like Liverpool to cover for possible injuries throughout the season and compete on three fronts (EPL, FA and League Cups).
ReplyDeleteP.S. I am assuming that Assaidi and Pacheco will be moved on this summer ...
Most of you (including myself) have no idea how Aspas plays and if he is real quality. So maybe he was bought to replace Downing, or Suarez or an extra option from the bench, we just don't know. To be honest i trust BR thinks he's a good player and thinks he fits into our squad, right now, we just have to trust him.
ReplyDeleteI want as many players as possible at this club fighting for positions, coz the best players will be playing and the ones on the bench, well they can leave if they are not happy
rodgers has already said hes going send people on loan. i dont think he wants shelvey despite his obvious potential. norwich will have to bid about 7M for him. alberto is rodgers prefered choice of a young AM he wants to develop. also he is also more versatile than shelvey and can play in the wings, am, and striker. sterling, suso, adorjan, ibe will all go out on loan. sterling and suso hopefully to prem clubs who will give them game time, and ibe and adorjan to championship clubs. i dont see why the team cant be like this

to start the season off we can start like this and alberto, mkhitaryan and borini can make impacts off the bench at 60 minutes. as long as every1 is playing, starting or impact sub role, we need to have a team who dont mind being rotated and instead want the team to do well. but the only way this can be is if we are winning. if we are winning, even if sometimes players dont play they'll be happy for the team. plus suspensions and injuries means all players will have chances. as mkhitaryan will be our marquee signing of course he cant be on the bench so we could also do this. but at the end of the day all line-ups must depend on the opposition

at the end of the day, if players dont play well they will be replaced competition will be fierce but im confident all players should be able to play at least 30 games each. and i think borini is garbage but there is still is some hope he can come good so for now he has a role on the bench
Isn't it better that we're in his position by having players competing for spots than we were at the beginning of last season? Where we have only Suarez as the only recognized striker in our team?
ReplyDeletewe have mickey mouse and fa cups ......if we dont reach the finals of either rodgers has to be sacked even if we get champs league

I'm a Liverpool fan and would, given the chance, never take the red shirt off once I'd got it on, however, Suarez is not from Liverpool, didn't grow up supporting them and is not a Liverpool fan.
ReplyDeleteHe is, justifiably or not getting lots of bad media attention and he is also one of the best players in the world. For these 2 reasons alone I see why he would want to leave. Not having tabloid photographers following you around, living in a sunnier climate (more close to his own culture), winning medals, partaking in CL football and getting paid a lot more does seem quite an attractive proposition.
I would love for him to stay but if we look at his situation objectively then it makes perfect sense for him to want to move on. In every interview he says how amazing our club and fans are but has many reasons to leave.
Thanks for the goals, the skills and the thrills Luis. You're welcome back any time. All the best!!
Suarez is off, maybe Carroll can play there tho! :)
ReplyDeleteIf Rodgers wants to sign another attacking mid, that means Hendo drops to the bench. In a 4-2-3-1 the 2 will always be Gerrard and Lucas as stated in the article. Rodgers will replace Hendo with a "true" attacking mid in the likes of Mykhitaryan/Eriksen...I don't believe this is entirely necessary, someone like Downing who lacks goals should be replaced.
ReplyDeleteSo based off the players listed, Shelvey is the one to go. Cash in maybe? I'd like Suso to stay but I have a feeling he may be loaned out.
Also, just my opinion, but I think players like Shelvey, Downing and Allen can't make a significant contribution coming off the bench...Players like Suso, Sterling and maybe Aspas provide more of a spark. Interesting times ahead, this is the consequence of not qualifying for Europe.
No you didn't imagine that but as you said in your article on Lucas, if they want to leave then so be it. We need a squad of players hungry to prove to the manager that they're better than what is already there. It keeps the first teamers in their toes and gives us options when we need them. If anyone wants to leave LFC, for whatever reason, we're better off without them.
ReplyDeleteBR recently said he intends for Liverpool to challenge in the cups. Surely this proves why? With Suarez (assuming he stays) out for the first 6 games, there are IMO a nice number of players there now (perhaps a bit heavy if we were to sign Alberto, whereas Mykhitaryan would play in central midfield). We were allegedly 'in crisis' when Sturridge got injured and all we have done is add one striker. Personally, I am thrilled that Liverpool are in this situation. ManU had RVP, Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez (for just 2 striker roles) last season and that worked out well for them.
ReplyDeleteWould like to add that I do appreciate how this does look heavy on attacking players, but I'm no worried about it at the minute (There aren't many extremely high earners in that list either, compared to having the likes of Joe Cole on the bench earning big money and still not having enough support up front!).
Not really seems like Madrid want carvani. And Carroll joining west ham, if suare goes we would just buy another striker. But most likely Suarez will stay IF Real Madrid sign Carvani.
ReplyDeleteWell I gave you a vote up because you attempted to do what BR said he actually wants, and that is 17 or 18 senior players competing for places supported by some good youngsters coming through.
ReplyDeletenot if he gets champions league
ReplyDeleteif we win carling and fa we get europe ...... i hope bale leaves lol if he does easy entry for us to 4th position ..... once again i dont think arsene wenger is gonna bother spending so we can edge them out ..... so rad to 4th is pretty clear .......but cups are always a different stroy .....bottom line i want more silverware ........we win cups it shows everyone we have more ambition we just finish 4th everyone will tell it was just a one time wonder and start talking about next season we flop
ReplyDeleteDowning will be our cover at left back and Aspas will take his position in the field is my guess
ReplyDeletei think arsenal will suprise you i expect major signings plus i think spurs will give there manager a shed load of money if they sell bale,chelsea will be far two strong as will man city ,imo our best bet could be manure cocking up,they were lucky last year and i think fergie realised that
ReplyDeleteso sell him we have wisdom and plenty of attackers why keep him
ReplyDeleteif this is our marque signing to rplace suarez i,am going to get a rope now;-)
ReplyDeletei don't believe wisdom can play left back either, moreover LS will be missing a few matches going into the new season so there's another vacancy for you.
ReplyDeletegone are the days where we sign a marquee
ReplyDeleteJK my point was that we need strong competition in all positions. That to me is the priority - good players fighting to get in the team. Yes we may end up with some unhappy but that's for BR to manage -whoever it is. What we need is people with hunger & desire.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm no Suarez apologist - frankly I'm sick of his selfishness
lets hope moyes continues his fine tradition of flopping against us :D :P
ReplyDeleteI'm a Liverpool fan and would, given the chance, never take
ReplyDeletethe red shirt off once I'd got it on, however, Suarez is not from Liverpool,

yes apart from the last 2 seasons lol;-)
ReplyDeletei hope your right about ls missing a few games lol:-))
ReplyDeletewell said m8 its not as if hes run his contract down ,and leaving for nothing(or next to nothing)goodluck suarez,and if he stays even better
ReplyDeleteNo way are all those players going to stay. Any successful club should have at least 2 players for every position in order for the side not to be seriously weakened following injury/suspension/loss of form. Also we get complacency if he knows he will get a starter spot regardless of performance.
ReplyDeleteAs for players wanting to leave due to lack of playing time, perhaps you have a point since it's world cup year, but that's the Manager's job to tell them straight when they join that they will have to be man enough to take competition, and his job to rotate sensibly to keep them on side.
Utd have £16m Nani on the bench with £17m Young and £16m Valencia, plus £12m Kagawa £15m Anderson, £18m Carrick, £14m Zaha, plus Cleverley, Giggs and Fletcher. All looking for midfield roles. We haven't even talked about their Sterling type youngsters, or any of their 7 strikers 3 top class ones with Wellbeck backup with Macheda, Bebe, Henriqes all there. What's that? 14 pus younsters? And they're signing more?
This is a GOOD thing.
Anyone who doesn't like competition can go sign for Norwich......
Downing, borini, shelvey will go. Henderson maybe. Suso out on loan.. If nasher leaves expect another striker to sign.
ReplyDeletethink Aspas is gonna replace Downing, he is hard working plus technical and has goals from out of the box right wing area. if Suarez goes BR will get Mykhitaryan and an out and out striker to replace him
ReplyDeletejamie please do a post on how ian ayre is also killing liverpools image
ReplyDeleteI have brought this up a few times myself, although just cause lucas will play DM doesn`t mean you shouldn`t have another player who plays there. 2 per position golden rule. So While I do agree some people need to be sold otherwise the wages will be to high and we will have unhappy players, I don`t agree with your numbers.
ReplyDeleteLuis Saurez is loved by Liverpool more than more Luis Suarez himself loves Liverpool. It is clear to everyone to see that Suarez's 30 something goals for the club were massive. Due to the fact that Liverpool would struggle today if it were to try and pursue a player of Suarez's caliber. The money for such a recruitment effort is just not there. This is the reason a lot of people want the club to hold unto the Uruguayan no matter what. He would be difficult to replace with an identical caliber of player.
ReplyDeleteGrateful to the player for his goals and his energy he brought to the team. I think he sometimes brought too much energy to be honest.
We all as fans are not stupid. It is a shame that he seems to think we are. He claims to love the team but blames the media for his wanting to leave. No body ever leaves a club simply because of a scandal. John Terry slept with his teammate's wife once and he didn't run from the media and threaten to leave Chelsea. Suarez want's out for other reasons the media is just a convenient excuse that's all.
Suarez starts every games because he is by far our best player.
ReplyDeleteHe will leave this summer for €40 million max. Real will play the long game with this one and go nowhere near the £50 million + that is being bandied about.
Let's sell up quick and rebuild early.........
I think it's a good thing. At least we will have decent squads for the FA and league cup. I don't think shelvey has done enough to deserve a place he should go on loan. Also your column is based on no injuries. What if gerrard or Sturridge or coutinho gets injured? If we don't get these competition for places going, when coutinho gets injured we'll start panicking and moaning. Just hope Lucas stays fit cos Allen is not an exact replacement we should get another dmc.
ReplyDeleteto the person who voted my comment down i take it you were over the moon with last season lol easy pleased
ReplyDeleteTo be honest some of the people on that list I wouldn't mind selling such as Allen, Shelvey and Downing while others such as Sterling and Suso are still quite young and inexperienced so it is quite surreal in my opi ion for them to try claiming a spot in a Liverpool Starting 11. Don't get me wrong they are great players but they should be sent out on loan to gain experience. With that you could arguably say that we it is a good thing getting BETTER QUALITY players instead of inexperienced youngsters and Downing
ReplyDeleteI think Suso, Sterling, and Shelvey will be loaned out (shelvey might be sold) and i doubt that alberto if signed would be a starter. Considering that you included Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Lucas and Mykhitaryan if he signs, then we are surely talking about 6 positions as Gerrard and co aren't going to occupy the front 3 positions and I think the Armenian and Coutinho will both be vying for the CAM role which means we will have 6 players vying for 3 midfield positions that leaves Suarez (if he stays), sturridge, aspas and borini as the only major contenders for the front 3 positions. Which isnt too bad. We got knocked out of the cup competitions last season because we didn't have enough quality players in the squad.
