Great news: LFC close to signing €25m goal-machine who won POTY 3 times

Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of signing Armenian attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who currently plays for Shakhtar Donetsk.

According to The Mirror and The Guardian today:

- Liverpool are close to tying up a £22m (€25m) deal.

- Rodgers has targeted Mhiktaryan for months.

- FSG are fully in favour of the deal.

- LFC's scouting team watched Mhiktaryan a dozen times last season.

- The purchase is not dependent on Luis Suarez leaving.

In a bid to ward off interested clubs, Shakhtar recently increased Mkhitaryan's buy-out clause to a whopping €40m, but the Armenian changed his representation in an alleged bid to push through a summer move to Anfield, and this seems to have worked.

Seemingly ngling for a move in May, Mkhitaryan told Sky Sports:

"For every player to play for the strongest clubs in the world is a dream, and I will do everything possible to move this summer to a different team."

However, a few days later, the playmaker appeared to change his tune:

"I'm a player of Shakhtar and I have a contract until 2015. I answered a question in a playful way. I have misunderstood or someone has misinterpreted my words."

Mkhitaryan has grabbed an amazing 25 goals in 28 league games for Donetsk last season, which is a fantastic return for an attacking midfielder, and he is determined to keep his form going to preserve the status he's worked to hard to achieve. He told Shakhtar's official website:

“It’s hard to achieve something, but you can lose it in one minute, so I know the value of what I have achieved, and I hope that I won’t ever lose it. Sometimes, I intentionally listen to what people talk about me. That’s pleasing and motivational for me to perform even better"

Mkhitaryan also admitted that he used to criticism, and expects to be pulled up when he delivers a poor performance:

“I never take the praise, if I know that I played badly. The situation has changed now: when my performance is poor, my countrymen start criticizing me, whereas they only praised me before"

Mkhitaryan has received a raft of accolades recently:

* Armenian Footballer of the Year in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
* Best Shakhtar player of 2011–12 season by the fans.
* Named in UEFA's Top 100 players by UEFA European Football Yearbook 2012-13.
* Voted CIS Footballer of the Year for 2012.

This is a potentially exciting signing, and I for one am stoked at the thought of Mhiktaryan in a Liverpool shirt :-)

NOTE: Voting is now open for the L-Kop End of Season Awards, so please vote if you haven't already!

  1. And his purchase isn't dependent on the sale of Suarez!

  2. This has been the one I've been waiting for, lets keep our fingers crossed!

I like statement "FSG are fully in favour of the deal". Hope FSG will favor more deal soon

    ReplyDelete
  4. I don't see it happening

    ReplyDelete
  5. great signing and if its not dependent on the suarez sale (which i have my doubts)it will mean we still have at least 40 million to spend on a world class striker if suarez leaves ,or even better he stays and we are finally looking to sign some top players could be happy days

    ReplyDelete
  6. I once scored 28 goals in a season, including hat-tricks against the Red Lion and the Six Bells.

    ReplyDelete
  7. lol the six bells do not count there shite;-)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yes - the Armenian international looks like an absolute fighter & will covet a team like Liverpool.
Enough said - Go get him

    ReplyDelete
  9. And to be fair two of my goals were offside, although I don't think officials should count your beer gut.

    ReplyDelete
  10. He would be a great signing. Fingers crossed I hope it happens . If we get him and a decent defender we are half way there in this window . If Suarez goes we will need another striker if he stays then we won't need another striker. Suarez, sturridge , aspas and borini . With another creative midfielder and/winger we will be up there. Ericsson would be another good signing.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yep, if he is that good, other clubs will come in, too, and he may well choose CL football. But then, I never thought Modric would sign for Spurs when he did.

    ReplyDelete
  12. What a change some good news yes. And pepe come out and said he wants to extend deal with Liverpool great to see a loyal player that's not mouthing off. And Ian ayre is in barca hopefully to sign Tello maybe good things to talk about

    ReplyDelete
  13. And he may fancy his chances of getting regular football at Liverpool more than at other clubs. He's only 24 also so one year of no CL football won't hurt him that much. Spectacular player though. With Coutinho, Sturridge, Suarez, Gerrard and him I almost pitty the teams that have to play against us. I don't think you will find many teams in the world with such an amount of direct players. What becomes even more important though is that there is one midfielder behind them all to dictate the pace and shield the defence. Lucas can do the first bit but I'm not so sure about the second. Mascherano was masterful at that.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I heard he's gonna change his agent , just to come to liverpool. I see why rodgers wants him plays alot of quick passes , can finish could be seeing coutinho going to the left , him being the false 9.

    ReplyDelete
  15. where do you get such kind of insider news?

    ReplyDelete
  16. JC you've told us all many, many times that FSG are cheapscates who have no interest in the club so this surely can't be true. I thought you told us they won't spend more that a couple of million on inexperienced players. I mean £22m for one class player. It's not like they've done that before......oh, wait

    ReplyDelete
  17. he and papa are world class players

    ReplyDelete
  18. Reported in some mainstream media back in April. Has the same agent as Ibra and Balotelli.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thought the Same, him as the false nine would work pretty nice!!
He's a good finisher, and makes wonderful passes ..
The thing with the agent - was it a serious source ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Original source seems to be an Armenian news agency (news.am) who got comments from the player.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seems like a good player.
    I hope its true.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sounds exciting for sure, but first of all we are probably not even close to signing him, yet.

In any scenario we have to strengthen our defence dramatically, too. Otherwise we would have to go out and hope to outscore the opposition, which is not a great idea, imho. Shut up shop at the back and make the opponents suffer at he other end of the pitch.

While I think that Lucas is a fine player, an upgrade on him wouldn't go amiss, either. Or at least a decent back-up.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I personally hope he doesn't sign and he is clearly talking to the press trying to get a move a way from his current club. This should not be accepted even for great players trying to move to our club. Shame on you all for getting excited about this!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jaimie, the player said "I will do everything this summer to move to a different team". Do you think he has disrespected his club by saying that? And regarding he said such a thing, do you still want him at Liverpool?

    ReplyDelete
  25. is it true as he signed no he has not would it be dependant on selling suarez it says not so if we sell suarez we should have over 60million to spend its all speculation time will tell

    ReplyDelete
  26. lol we would all be offside

    ReplyDelete
  27. I clearly get your sentiment. Clearly, if Suaréz or Reina get condemned for saying that it would be difficult to turn down Real/Barcelona, players in our sight should be judged the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Saying that, he looks like a great player and it would be a real show of intent.

FSG can't be cheapskates, they've gave us money, isn't there fault it wasn't spent wisely,

    ReplyDelete
  30. We are close to mass hysteria of this one, so I hope that we really get him and he turns out to be that good, too. Am also warming on the idea of spending seriously big money on Papadopoulos. Will hold talks with my Schalke supporting mate later this week to get some first hand insight.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Do your talks have any reflection on the talks that LFC will have with Schalke? I'm seen a little bit of Papa last season and while he looks good, i am also aware that he looks good in Germany and typically outside of the top 2 the quality isn't that high

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, he disrespected his club. Yes, I still want him at LFC. I don't want either Reina or Suarez to leave just because they touted themselves to Barca/Real, and I've never argued that. It's an irritant, not a reason for dumping a player, and if Mikhtaryan says anything similar as an LFC player I will highlight it, just as I have with Reina, Suarez, Skrtel, Agger etc

    ReplyDelete
  34. are you not worried that this money could have been spent on a defender :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. while its nice to bolster our attack should the defence be our immidiate concern we donot have carragher to come in and solve our problems this time round

    ReplyDelete
  36. we need both hopefully we will get them both sorted

    ReplyDelete
  37. like i say if its not dependable on the suarez sale why should we worry they know we need a defender as well so surely they will bet both

Because you don't like the fact I'm right:-) and name calling act your age aha :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. No, of course not. It's just to give me a better idea than any amount of youtube videos could do.

In the past few years the standard of the German league has got better throughout, methinks. Well, maybe not if you are watching Bayern on a regular basis, as they have beaten a few teams quite comprehensively, but they are officially the best team in Europe, too.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Watch out he may throw his toys at you!LOL

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm with you on this one. our defence needs sorting out 1st. We build our play from the back and need players who are better at keeping the ball and turning defence into attack quicker, We need defenders who can handle the long ball game better and who are quick enough to play there lines further up the field. I read somewhere that our attacking stats were the best in europe with chances created.
We can improve the attacking part of our game by getting the right players at the back.

    ReplyDelete
  50. One day you might run out of people you reply to.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We can also improve our attacking game by finishing off those chances we create.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I remember A couple of windows ago all the papers / sites were heavily linking us with MATA. I was sooooo excited and then....well we all know what happened.

For now, I'm going to try and forget about this potential signing but will be so unbelievably happy if we do sign him.

When the majority of Liverpool fans have been gettng a hard on at the thought of signing Ericksen, I'vebeen screaming for this guy. Didn't think we had a chance, ain't seen or heard any links in regards to him and then last night out of nowhere BOOM!! Fingers crossed!!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. That confirms my opinion. I don't see it happening.

    ReplyDelete
  54. doubt it m8 only the people i do want to reply to that would be nice

    ReplyDelete
  55. why by loads of players i would rather get two decent players than 5 average players

    ReplyDelete
  56. i do not expect him to sign he may well do but history tells us different

    ReplyDelete
  57. ive got one john henrys missus . the dirty lucky old b"stard

    ReplyDelete
  58. well it still remains to be seen if mhik is a hit in PL .... would have rather spent 20 on cabaye at least he is proven

    ReplyDelete
  59. chirag is there not a spec savers by u ? every post u "don't see it happenening"

    ReplyDelete
  60. from what i have seen of him he looks decent, but who knows how he will fair in the premiership

    ReplyDelete
  61. History? Because he is not English? ??

    ReplyDelete
  62. yes shes not bad at all could do with a couple of big boys up front like she has ;-)and who says money cannot buy you happeness

    ReplyDelete
  63. no history shows we are linked to every tom ,dick and harry, and usally end up with sally

    ReplyDelete
  64. so true m8 peter Beardsley a fine example

    ReplyDelete
  65. Me2. What a player he is.

I also remember when we were linked with Quaresma...oh man how excited me and my friends were!

    But nope.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I've "heard" they want close to £20M for him and according to the player's agent "he is fine at Schalke".

Don't know what to make of it.

But signing these two shows real intent. 4th spot min.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I think the Bundesliga is more attractive than La Liga, Serie A etc...

    It has def gotten stronger.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The other guy I have been wanting at Liverpool for years is Arda Turan. Unfortunately he announced he staying at Madrid.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Let's hope we get him. We have lacked a class AM since Gerrard's 09-10 season.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I still think we need to buy a class GK and maybe loan him out, like Chelsea did with Couitous.

    ReplyDelete
  71. how i wish he was playing now always one of my favourite players

    ReplyDelete
  72. no because we are linked to 1oos of players and we rarly get the ones that get us excited

    ReplyDelete
  73. If we get £15M for Carroll and more from deadwood (Spearing, Pacheco etc...) then we should have enough I think. Plus if Suarez leaves then we can def get him, but then we need a striker.

If Suarez leaves we should go for Martinez at Porto or Damiao!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Quaresma i wanted him to he looked awesome in portugal

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's true thought, they have given us money. The managers, especially KD, did not spend it right.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I was just joking buddy.

The standard has gotten better but i think it is still behind the EPL. I love watching BVB play, that Klopp knows what he is talking about :-)

    ReplyDelete
  77. we should have signed him years ago he would have come but alas it never happened

    ReplyDelete
  78. Man...wasted potential.

He could not hack being at a big club.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Turan...man...if was begging us to buy him.

    ReplyDelete
  80. i agree they have given some money but posters on here think they are generous to a tee imo they are not at all

    ReplyDelete
  81. True. Could be a Torres or a Shevchenko (still can't believe he flopped)

    ReplyDelete
  82. actually for the cretivity and trickery of suarez id rather get in andre schhrulle of leverkusen he is in the same ould as suarez pace to burn and dribbles for fun

    ReplyDelete
  83. Fair enough I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think they are businessmen foremost. They won't throw around crazy money like City or Chelsea.

They are trying to make the club sustainable.

    ReplyDelete
  85. henderson and downing (a little bit) are looking to be money well spent and i have a feeling hendo may prove to be he is well worth 25m or more and regd carroll he did well at west ham if he can keep his injuries at bay he is very well a 20+ goal a season striker

    ReplyDelete
  86. if we are going for henrik then that means eriksen is a no go ....... all the clubs he is linked with and no one wants to sign he must have a real problem lol

    ReplyDelete
  87. They are okay players in my opinion. They would not get a spot at the top 4 clubs.

Currently I view them as squad players. £16M and £20M was wasted on them in my opinion. We could have gotten Mata for that.

    ReplyDelete
  88. hendo will show you this season he break into any top 4 team :D

    ReplyDelete
  89. Great deal, if we can make it happen. The production from this player is fantastic. We have to many players in our squad that put up average numbers.MKHITARYAN and COUTINHO creating and scoring next season says to me LFC won't struggle for creativity if/when SUAREZ leaves!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Let's hope so. He has def improved.

    What about Carroll?

    ReplyDelete
  91. am not used to the news of Liverpool signing someone worth 20mn,,,!!

    ReplyDelete
  92. well caroll scored 6 goals in 11 games coming off injury if that isnt talent i dont know what that is ....

    ReplyDelete
  93. you seem to forget a stewart downing :D

    ReplyDelete
  94. keep your fingers crossed they dont get injured !! ^^

    ReplyDelete
  95. jamie when has agger said he wanted to leave ???? he just considered early retirement

    ReplyDelete
  96. well... as a result of that/since that ugly transfer window...

    ReplyDelete
  97. for what a profit for them selves i just hope they get it quick

    ReplyDelete
  98. we could not have got mata at all we would never have been able to match the wages on offer at other clubs fsg have made that much clear

    ReplyDelete
  99. one that got away

    ReplyDelete
  100. i know he should have come to us instead;-)

    ReplyDelete
  101. if suarez leaves id rather go for andre schrrule of leverjusen ......he is similar to suarez pace dribbling eye for gioal and since hyppia is manager we could get a good deal

    ReplyDelete
  102. If we are signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan without selling LS, then I must say i really see the ambition of FSG. Let's hope this is true.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Agger has done the same thing as Reina/Suarez in the past. For example, when in amid Barca speculation in November last year, he said:

"it is positive when your name is mentioned in that context [transfers], and it's a good thing if big clubs want me".

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yes, hope we can get a decent replacement for Carragher though It will not be an easy task.

    ReplyDelete
  105. None are, the club have stated they're not selling.

    ReplyDelete
  106. they are a few out there but they cost money hopefully it will be sorted but maybe we will just get troure and give one of wisdom or kelly ago if skrtal stays i do not expect much more transfer action on the defence

    ReplyDelete
  107. I expect some Citeh and Chelski departures this summer tbh. Mou and Pellegrini will assess their squads and I can imagine they'll have some players of their own they want to bring. That could present us with opportunities. Personally I expect: Richards, Maicon, Kolarov, Dzeko and Javi Garcia to leave Citeh and Romeu, Torres, Mikel, Malouda, Marin and Lukaku to leave Chelsea. So who would like us to sign any of those?

    ReplyDelete
  108. If we get this guy, then I dont think we will also go for Eriksen...

I think that Eriksen is a very nice player but he talks too much... We already have one or two of those here :S

    ReplyDelete
  109. I've been watching this guy for a little while. He's actually a better player than Ericksen and is good with both feet. If we're really going after him this means we're not after Ericksen anymore cuz they play the same role for their respective clubs

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think that will come with winning the ball back higher up the pitch. If the defence starts nearer the half way line and we win the ball back through pressing in numbers in dangerous areas then more easier chances will come.
    Hope that makes sense

    ReplyDelete
  111. Don't think they are far behind the Prem anymore, and I've been having a laugh at German league football for nearly all my life.

    ReplyDelete
  112. It is a good thing if your best players are being linked with the super clubs, it means they're doing something right on the pitch

    ReplyDelete
  113. i dunno why borecelona is so fixated with all our players :P reina suarez agger next thing we know they will want even rodgers himself :P

    ReplyDelete
  114. been saying that for a loooong time :D finally i know im not alone :D

    ReplyDelete
  115. use the one ring to silence them all :D

    ReplyDelete
  116. Hahaha yeah :D

Divine retribution for Suarez if he leaves :P

    ReplyDelete
  117. Yep, but other reports say that Papadopoulos would like to come here, but he won't say it in public. After all, all of this could be made up. We are linked to, what, 20 players a day? Good that we at least still get linked to some proper talent. And imho it is way, way too early to make any predictions about next season. The transfer window hasn't even opened.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yep, it has. Is Serie A still dead boring? Don't come to watch it anymore, for more than 20 years. Catenccio did it for me. Maradonna was a joy to watch, though.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Maybe he is a bit overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I am so glad we never got him. He surely blows hot and cold.

    ReplyDelete
  121. From other games I saw him in, he looks like Frank Lampard with less passing capabilities. The goals speak for themselves, but is he really worth 20 m euros? It would be good to have a attacking mid that holds the ball and makes good runs and scores, as coutinho and sturridge (and maybe suarez) is all the flair we need. An efficient midfielder, I think he'd be good, not sure if worth 20 m though.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I think CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN is holding out for a move to DORTMUND and we've been told that by ERIKSEN's agent that's why we've switched our attention to a slightly more expensive but equally good MKHITARYAN.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I meant our conversion rate. Shots per goal ratio. That's what to has get better. Playing further up the pitch may create more chances, but they have to be put away.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I think Eriksen believes his own hype a little too much, and at 21 years old that comes across as a little too premature. No matter how good he can become.
Mkhitaryan on the other hand, stating " I never take the praise if I know I played badly" comes across much more humble. A trait I think that shows class and receives respect.....
I know where I would prefer to put my money; I just hope it actually happens.....

    ReplyDelete
  125. turn him to kop wraith :D

    ReplyDelete
  126. When you put it like that Jaimie, then I must say I'm in total agreement...

    ReplyDelete
  127. You've just repeated what I was thinking,,,, ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  128. I would like to agree but it's beginning to get hard to see where Rogers is going to play him?
I just hope, if he is used off the bench, he puts in good enough shifts to make his place in the starting line up a must!

    ReplyDelete
  129. I`m happy with this deal if we get it. I also think he is best than Eriksen, and to soem extent think Eriksen gets hyped to much. Add Tello to the list (as another poster informed me how good he is) and thats some attacking line up if we also kept Suarez. Even if he goes thats some line up. With and without below

    --Tello--Suarez---Coutinho
    --------Sturridge-------

    Subs
    Henrikh
    Aspa
    Borini
    Sterling

    Without

    --Tello--Henrikh--Coutinho
    ----------Sturridge-------

    Subs
    Aspa
    Borini
    Sterling
    Downing

both combos could be inter changed per game, so while i have Henrikh as a sub on top list, thats purely as I cant fit him in lol.

That though is a truely awesome attacking line.

    ReplyDelete
  130. i dont think tello will move ......so id replace tello with aspas ...... and also no need to buy him given time sterling and ibe wiill be as good if not better than tello

    ReplyDelete
  131. I actively read your thought to then repeat them :-)

    ReplyDelete
  132. Eriksen comes prematurely? :-) Has his agent told you that?

He does, indeed. It may well be what I call arrogance of youth. Ajax though really have an eye for talent and nurturing it. It would do him, Eriksen, good to move to a bigger league and get put into his place, or show what he's made of. Not sure whether I want us to be the team to go for him and as it seems, other clubs have second thoughts, too.

Mkhitaryan is a few years older, and comes from one if not the poorest country in Europe. That may help him keeping his feet firmly attached to the ground.

Did you actually know that in his home country he is known as Հենրիկ Համլետի Մխիթարյան

I didn't even know they had different letters in Armenia and we bang on about the (US) Americans having no clue about Europe.

Yep, agree with you, if possible go for Mkhitaryan.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I think this is one all the fans want to see happen. They rarely seem to materialise, but I'm not sure any other club would be willing to take the punt on him.

    ReplyDelete
  134. if we get him i hope they put his home country name on the shirt :-)

    ReplyDelete
  135. he did say "worth" 20mil not cost lol

    ReplyDelete
  136. same. quality not quantity

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'd take Richards (would slot in alongside agger and provide backup for RB), Kolarov (competition for Jose), Dzeko (supersub striker with some force), Marin (not quite there yet but heaps of potential, and can play across the midfield). I honestly dont think they would cost the world...

    ReplyDelete

  142. thats been our problem over the years trying to get two many average players and hoping we find a superstar

  143. And if you break down how many of them shots were taken from out side the penalty area then it becomes clear that teams had there lines set in 2 banks of 4 making it hard to create clear cut chances. If we win the ball back in there own half before they get time to reset there lines then i believe the shots per goal ratio will improve.

  148. completely agree. Utd sign one superstar a year, and it works.

I would rather spend all the kitty on one top top player than four average players. For me I fail to see how adding any average players helps the team in anyway. We have/had enough average players, it was top players we missed.

  149. it helps if you have a good nucleas of players at the club to start with

  150. Sorry mate; I was talking about Henderson....
As for Carrol, I'd rather have the money!

  151. Of course, but we do right now imo. Reina, Gerrard, Lucas, Suarez, Sturridge, Johnson, Agger, Coutinho, and more. All of them are good players in there positions. That is a really good core of which I wouldn`t want to change. All it needs is a few other top players added to it.

  152. agree but suarez gerrard and pepe will not bee around much longer so we need to act now
