The Pepe Reina transfer saga continues! Over the last couple of months, links to Barcelona have intensified, and despite Brendan Rodgers insistence that the Spaniard is 'not for sale', reports in Spain today claim that Reina is actually hoping that Barca can agree a deal with the Reds.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca today:
"Pepe Reina is aware of Barcelona's interest. He would be happy to make the move, and he is waiting for a call from the Catalan club"
A report two weeks ago in Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo - which maintains close links with the Catalan club - claimed:
* Reina has agreed a 2-year deal with Barca.
* A transfer fee of £10m has been agreed with LFC.
* Barca guarantee Reina will be first choice when Victor Valdes leaves.
Last week, Mundo Deportivo further claimed that:
* Reina's agent met with Liverpool on Tuesday to discuss the player's future.
* Liverpool want to keep him, but would be willing to let him go for €15m.
When quizzed about Reina's future during his a press conference last Friday, Rodgers told reporters:
"Pepe's not for sale. He's got three years left on his contract, and he's happy. Obviously, there's speculation - it's silly season now, with all the rumours, but it's not worth commenting on, really."
In his column for the Liverpool Daily Post this week, Aldo insisted that Liverpool 'must keep hold' of the 'brilliant' Spaniard:
"With Jamie Carragher retiring this summer, I don’t think we can afford to lose another leader in the dressing room. Reina has had a couple of indifferent years but over the course of this season he has started to get back to his best and would be very hard to replace".
In my experience, Mundo and Marca regularly gets things right when it comes to Barcelona/Real Madrid, and although Reds fans are probably in denial over the possibility of Reina leaving, there's no smoke without fire, and it's highly likely that the Spaniard will leave this summer.
Reina has three years left on his contract, and if he extends his contract at LFC, will almost certainly mean that he'll finish his career at Anfield. Will he want to do that, knowing that his chances of winning the biggest trophies are slim?
If he goes to Barcelona, Reina is practically guaranteed at least one trophy a year, and regular Champions League football, which may swing things his way on the international front.
As far as I can see, there are plenty of positive reasons for Reina to leave, and very few enticing reasons for him to stay.

10 million is not enought
ReplyDeleteYou hit the nail perfectly jaimie !!
ReplyDeleteI would understand his decision to go for a top club for champions league football etc + it would higher his chances for a place in the Spanish national team !!
Knowing barca absolutely needs a new goal keeper, with reina undoubtedly one of their favourites we should push up the price as much as we can. 15-20m pounds would be a good fee for him, would stock our budget up, and would show we can still negotiate without having the feeling were always loosing ... Barca is in need of a keeper so hell cmon! Don't give them an easy buy !!
Absolutely not ! But I'm pretty sure barca is willing to fight for this guy, maybe we will get overpaid one time..
ReplyDeleteThey could take our virginity (in terms of selling low and overpaying for new players) lol (:
if we sell him for ten million its a joke hes coming into his prime as a keeper hes one of the top 5 keepers in the world imo who the f"ck could we get for the same price as good seriously
ReplyDeletedoubt it everybody plays hard ball with us and when we lose our star players we never get the full market value imo
ReplyDelete15 mill at least. but, yes please.
ReplyDeleteAS I SAID MANY TIMES REINA IS SPENT CRAP ON CROSSES BEATEN AT THE NEAR POST ALL THE TIME IF WE GET 12 TO 15 MILLION FOR HIM THAT WOULD BE HIGHWAY ROBBERY .BUT HEY HO THATS FOOTBALL I WOULD BE HAPPY TO RECOUP THE 6 MILLION WE PAID FOR HIM . BUT DONT WANT VORM HE IS TO SMALL AND ONLY A SHOT STOPPER . 17MILL THATS WHAT CHEALSEA WANT FOR THE BELGIAN ON LOAN AT ATHLETICO AND HES A BIG UNIT WHO COMMANDS HIS BOX.BACK TO REINA HE HAS SHOWEN A BIT OF FORM SINCE HE HEARD OF BARCAS INTREAST .BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PREVIOUS 2AND A HALF SEASONS PEPE ???
ReplyDeleteWHEN U WERE PICKING UP 100 K AWEEK ? YOUR NICKNAME( PEPE NO SAVES) WAS VERY APT . GET SHUT AND IF WE MAKE A DECENT PROFIT GREAT
Maybe we should just wait until the transfer window begins, so far, a fortnight ago Pepe had already signed a 2 year deal, and now he is "waiting" for the call to go to Barca. It just shows that the Spanish tabloids are just as bad as ours when it comes to transfer speculation. There is no doubt that Lfc are in for an interesting summer transfer wise, and one that I'm looking forward to. We have no arabian money behind us but I reckon with the manager upheaval from the top 3, its gonna make an interesting summer and upcoming season. I'm sure I'll get grief for this, but I'm feeling quite positive for the future after witnessing our post crimbo form. As seems to be an LFC keyword over the last 5 years, we just need that consistency to convert the disappointing draws to a win. We will lose players in the summer but hopefully, like january, we can get any business done early doors.
ReplyDeletefickle clueless and lack of respect comments. great keeper the best since grob. hes been exposed by a weak and inconsistent defence and lack of stability and broken promises at the club.
ReplyDeletejust wait and see hard keepers are hard to come by and he is one at the top.
hes been great since carra came in and sured up the defence.
but hey hes going to a sh#te team who obviously havent a clue about talent.
some lfc fans of today just laughing stock no wonder other fans cant stand us now
well said mate, hes a talent he was the best in the league under rafa.
ReplyDeleteour loss will be someone elses gain..............as usual
i like pepe our defence as been a big let down this season, hope its them getting used to a new system but to me it seems everyone is blaming the defensive unit but praising the amount of goals we have scored well if we are goinhg to attack a lot more surely the defence is going to be more exposed you cannot have it both ways unless you are very lucky
ReplyDeleteMundo Deportivo has a reputation for sensationalism.
ReplyDeleteIt was rumoured we wanted Tello for Reina, but I see Tello signed a contract extension, including a €37mill buyout clause. If we got Tello it would be a nice bit of business (IMO). Reina is definitely worth more than £10mill, nearer £20mill. I would snap their hand off in a swap for Tello though.
YEP WE LET THE BEST ONE GO WITHOUT GIVIN HIM A REAL CHANCE BRAD FRIEDEL
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what part of 'not for sale' is so hard to understand.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a particular fetish for this transfer saga and despite the manager and player both rubbising the speculation on numerous occassions you have continued to run this 'story' of Reina's imminent departure for months..
You've admitted you want Reina replaced.. nothing wrong with that, it's your opinion after all.. But I don't think it's fair to keep writting these articles based on unkown sources from Spanish papers when the player and manager have already delt with the question..
Are Brendan Rodger's and Pep lying ?
If you believe so then say so ..
Jaimie, I think in isolation you can make a good case for selling Reina for about 15 million and maybe in a year this would be a deal that happens. But in the context of a season of upheaval at the back for this transitioning team, we shouldn't be considering letting him go. Looks like we will have potentially 3 new CBs to bed in as replacements for Carra, Skts, Coates. Even if Skrtel stays he is unlikely to be first choice...throwing a new GK into the mix is likely to be very disruptive and we can't afford to be leaking goals, especially early in the season.
ReplyDeleteThat said, if the lad doesn't want to stay then l would let him go rather than have him sulking.
Anyone can write a article saying reina wants to leave lol. Didn't someone write it before but then reina said he didn't want to leave? 10 million is poor bid and it would get knocked back.
ReplyDeleteIf we sold Reina i'd want close to 15m than 10m.
ReplyDeleteBut one issue is that from the rumors doing the rounds at the moment Barca have a pre-contract with ter stegen and the want reina for the next two years.
So the main person whos name keeps coming up the replace reina could be on his way there with him.
May be a deal of New Keeper(say, ter stegen) + 5 million then?
ReplyDeletetotally agree, our defence has been inconsistant and weak for a few seasons now, id hate to be a keeper in front of those 4. carra been excellent since back in, agger getting back to his best, and skrtel the root of the problem
ReplyDeletewhere the f3ck is my original post jk i took the time to write??
ReplyDeletecant be one rule for one and not the other??
This seems to be a case of tapping up by the Spanish newspapers and by a certain someone else.
ReplyDelete10 milion is very lower price and non reasonable.....Much better the must over than 20milion(because quality and performance still the best) OR 15 milion plus Christian Tello.
ReplyDeleteMarca is reliable? I have quite a few Catalan friends who opine otherwise. Infact Marca is the DailyFail of Spain..
ReplyDeletetotally same point of view
ReplyDeletesoory m8 forgot you was on about torres lol but he was worth that at the time
ReplyDeleteagree but he made mistakes all our keepers seem to
ReplyDeletebut pepes worth as much hes proven over years so why should we cough up an extra 5million let barca pay the market rate
ReplyDeletewell said chris but if he doe,s go what in your opinion is a fair market value
ReplyDeleteWhat does it matter if we don't get 15 million for Reina? We will be saving 5 million pounds on his wages! That should make up for it? With Reina not on our wage bill makes room for up to 3 players...
ReplyDeleteWhat is the big issue with what we pay and sell players for? It is not like it is our money.
Torres was worth nowhere near 50 million. It was what Abramovich was willing to pay. FSG were very clever with the sale of Torres. They told Abramovich that he will need to cough up whatever Carrol was going to cost us plus 15 million extra and that is why we got 50 million for Torres.
There was no way we would have got 50 million for Torres if he was going to a different club at the time we sold him and there is no way Abramovich will even make half his money back if he wanted to sell Torres.
Did they pay the market rate when they bough Mascherano? We could not do anything about it as the player wanted out and Barca were not willing to pay more then what they offered.
ReplyDeleteWe can get a very good replacement for 10 million anyway. It is not like Begovic will cost more then 8-10 million so forget about the money issue please as you are moaning as if you have wet underwear.
so the new keeper will not want wages will he
ReplyDeletelets sell suarez for 10 million and get him of the wage bill as well, torres was the best striker in the league for two seasons he was in a long contract he was worth the money
lol
ReplyDeletePepe has cost us a lot of points in the last 3 seasons and always puts our bad form down to ot spending enough. The latest comment came after the city game where he cost us 2 points he was also poor for walcots goal a few days earlier. I think his form has only improved cos he wants the move. Time forr a yonger hungrier keeper. Carra's retirement shoud signal a clearout. Pepe, skirtl, coates and to be honest id sell johnson he can't defend a cross and makes a lot of mistakes but 20 mil for an overrated england player woulnt be bad.
ReplyDeletePlease name a club that would have paid 50 million for Torres other than Abramovich then I will believe you.
ReplyDeleteSuarez is worth way more than what Torres is my friend. If Torres and Suarez had to go on sale now, Suarez's transfer fee would be almost triple that of what Torres will be sold for.
It is also not about getting Pepe off our wage bill. If the player wants to go then we cannot stop him but fact of the matter is that we will be able split his wages between plus/minus three new signings.
Why do you reply if you have no proper counter argument?
ReplyDeleteYou say it best when you say nothing at all ;-)
suarez is now he was not then
ReplyDeletejaimie if this is not sniping what is hes come on changed his name just to try and get me banned again the man is a rectum ,sort him out he should be banned four posts just trying to get a reaction sad man
ReplyDeleteRectum? And we want to talk about sniping?
ReplyDeleteYou do not reply with a counter argument. You either repeat what you originally said.
If you have no counter argument then why reply?
I see red people - Stop causing trouble. Drop the stupid, irrelevant comments from your posts (i.e. 'moaning as if you have wet underwear') or you'll be banned.
ReplyDeletecheers jaimie
ReplyDeleteSee what I mean? What counter are you providing telling me that "suarez is now he was not then"
ReplyDeleteSeriously mate, if you want to have a debate with me then challenge my comment.
i do not want a debate with you ,i do not want nothing to do with you bye
ReplyDeleteTHE FORM AND INJURYS DOUBT HE WAS WORTH 25 MILLION GOOD OLD ROMAN
ReplyDeleteis your cap lock stuck lol
ReplyDeletei normally have that effect on women moist underwear haha
ReplyDeletesoz m8 but i always post in higher case when i talk about REINA cos as an ex cat myself his lack of ability annoys me no end and the 100k a week he picks up could be described as theft
ReplyDeleteI really don't like this Kanwar geezer!
ReplyDeleteno, that wasn't my point. I suggest barca pay us extra 5 million after getting us a new keeper. Kinda like - Henry's "We got Andy Carroll + 15 million for Torres" excuse.
ReplyDeletegood idea not going to happen
ReplyDeleteTer Stegen to replace him
ReplyDeleteI think he's worth 15m minimum.. or 10m plus Messi :)
ReplyDeletelol 5 plus messi be realistic;)
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone see Begovic as a replacement for Reina?
ReplyDeleteHe has been decent and his name is always mentioned, Would LFC supporters be happy with him as our number 1?
