La Liga raid? - LFC still want 'incredible' €20m star Pep hailed as 'fantastic'.

Liverpool continue to be linked with a summer transfer move for promising Barcelona defender Martin Montoya.

According to a report today in Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the Reds are still keeping tabs on the 22-year old.

This latest link follows a report in Spanish newspaper Sport last week, which claimed:

"Liverpool are planning to make a move for Martin Montoya, and the club has already enquired about the status of the player.

"Brendan Rogers is a big fan of the Barca player, and wants to sign him to strengthen the right side of Liverpool's defence"

Due to injury, Montoya got a golden chance to impress in last season's Copa Del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao, Pepe Guardiola's last game managing the club. After the game, Guardiola enthused:

“Montoya had a fantastic game, he has many great years in the club ahead of him”.

Current Barca boss Tito Villanova also rates Montoya, and after the 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in October, he told reporters:

“Martín had to jump straight in and had Cristiano Ronaldo against him on his flank. But with the match he played, he showed us that he is an incredible player who can jump straight in, adapt and play great”.

Judging by his recent comments, Montoya seems to be happy at Barca and doesn't want to leave. He told Marca:

"It makes me feel proud. I have played here for 12 years now, and I have never wanted to leave. Barca are the team of my dreams. Training with the first team means working at a high rhythm, and always giving everything. You learn a lot in a short period of time."

With Rodgers in charge, Liverpool's repeated interest in Barcelona youngsters makes perfect sense, but it's doubtful that he has the pull to attract these stars of the future to Anfield.

Competition for Glen Johnson at right back would definitely be a good thing, but with Andre Wisdom and Martin Kelly in the squad, is it a priority position to strengthen this summer?

Montoya's contract expires in the summer of 2014, and his buyout clause is €20m.

  3. Well done RAFA. You can walk away with pride. I like BR but still can't help thinking what RAFA could do with us with full board backing.

  4. The real joke is that Paulo Ferreira is too.

Here's a partial list of stuff PF has won:

    European Cup x 2
    UEFA Cup x 2
    Portuguese Liga x 2
    Premier League x 3
    FA Cup x 4
    'tis a Mad world.

  5. Don't know whether this has something to do with Rodgers alleged lack of pull. Moving away from Barcelona would be a step down in most cases. There aren't to many sides who are better than them, and given that he's been there for over a decade, it is understandable that he doesn't think about moving. He might think it over, if a club playing in the CL can offer him regular first team football, a more or less guaranteed starting place. The probably would have some pull, regardless of the manager in charge.

  6. He's the ultimate stowaway!

  7. anyone remember Winston Bogarde? Barely played in 3/4 years there at Chelsea and won nothing but the man made sure to stay till the end of his contract to get his money, regardless of barely playing, as he knew it was a lot of money. He even got a bonus for when Chelsea won silverware....despite not even playing in it!!!

  8. Incredible. With that kind of resume, you'd think he would be a candidate for the Football Hall of Fame!

  9. Forget him,
Alcantara is reported to be for sale, so Barca can buy Neymar, What a player Thiago Alcantara is, a genius.

  10. What are we Barcelona Reserves now? Someone should tell Rodgers he's not at Swansea anymore. I expect impact signings this summer, not wheeling and dealing.

  11. There was an article yesterday saying that Barca might sell him and one or two others to raise cash for Neymar. Apparently Madrid are trying to get in there before them so they want to raise cash and tie the deal up asap.

    *sorry off topic here*

did any1 discuss about should we reserve the #23 (i mean no other player can use this #23 untill....carra hmmm u know ! )

man this guy career from day 1 till the end just service for us, i think the club should do something to his honor right?

  13. I was thinking this the other day. Retiring numbers is common practice in the US. Did Carra wear 23 because of Michael Jordan by the way? Anyway, I'd think if we were to go down that road the first number that should have been retired was #7 so maybe it's a bit odd to be starting now? I'm not sure about this one. That said, I'm old skool and if it were up to me players would just wear 1 to 11 again...

  14. Why don't we just ask Barcelona if their entire B team would like to play in the premiership next season, how many more of their players are we going to be linked with, bloody hell just because tika-taka was bandied around.

  15. Been reported in the last day or so. With Cesc's arrival, it has caused a bit of congestion in that department. Neither Cesc or Thiago have looked all that fluid this season, but overall Barca have some fluidity problems in midfield and the front three (Sanchez has improved a bit but still not a great fit, hence why I see them giving Tello a new contract) Imo, its either Cesc or Thiago they will sell in the summer.

  16. I believe that the idea of the shirts being the club's shirts, not player's shirts, should be maintained. It's hard to say that though because Carra is a legend. Maybe the 23 jersey can have the same significance of the number 7 jersey. But if 7 wasn't retired, and 12 isn't for the fans, 23 shouldn't. Because in a few years we could have the 23 and 8 shirts retired....

  17. Well we do have Luis, who is as good as Messi. Phil, who is as good as Iniesta and Gerrard who is as good as Xavi. Our defence and goalkeeper can match theirs so we're only a Busquets short of challenging for the league title.

  18. I think former Barcelona Reserves players Pepe Reina and Luis Garcia do respectively did pretty well for us. They seem to produce some quality players down there.

  19. Food for thought: "Since he made his Premier League debut in Feb 2011, Liverpool have won a higher proportion of PL games without Luis Suarez (58%) than with him (39%)."

  20. wow, with all things considered I wouldn't be surprised if Neymar's eventual move turns out to be a relative flop!

  21. I haven't seen Alcantar play much this year, but what I saw of him previously was somebody set to be a world-beater in his position.

Then again, the last time I was so excited about a young play-maker was Aaron Ramsey though... lol

  22. I'm not sure Eriksen is even better than Thiago in the first place. It would surely take some convincing to get him over to LFC though...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Buy, buy, buy! Him, Thiago and Tello. Couple of defenders. Toby alderweild (Ajax) for ex...Happy Days!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Like you I find it hard to separate the two on ability.ERIKSEN was my first choice because his contract situation means we would get him cheaper.
Trying to take ALCANTARA away from BARCA will be tough I expect huge competition for his signature.Letting a talent like that go i would think BARCA would want a buy back option like they did with BOJAN.That's another reason ERIKSEN would be my preferred option because if he turns out to be a true world beater, he'll be out of the exit door quicker than Speedy Gonzalezs!

  25. Reina was not only a reserve he also was a first choice keeper. Luis did ok but you have to admit that he was not very consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Reina never was the first choice keeper for Barcelona. He got called up to the first team (and played for them), when their first AND second choice keeper got injured.

Luis Garcia was a very good player, not world-class, but very good. I think he was better than 17m Stewart Downing, for instance.

  27. Interesting indeed. Source?

  28. He's only 5'9" tall! We need bigger guys to play defense--6'2" as a minimum.

  29. If we would have simply won the games we were supposed to win against lesser opponents, the WBAs, Stoke, Swansea, AV, Newcastle, we would have contended this year. We were capable enough...just not energetic enough week in and week out.

"I may be one of the worst buys in the history of the Premiership, but I don’t care, I am the best Chelsea pickpocket in history.”
