'LFC are interested' - Reds want €12m La Liga legend 'in case Suarez goes'. Viable...?

After missing out on a loan deal during the January transfer window, Liverpool are reportedly back on the trail of Barcelona star David Villa, and according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, the striker definitely wants a move to the Premier League.

In April, Spanish newspaper AS, claimed that Liverpool are tracking the 31-year old goalscorer, and The Mirror also recently claimed:

"Liverpool hope to land David Villa for a knockdown fee after failing in a bid to take the Spaniard on loan in January.

Villa - - nicknamed 'El Guaje' by Barcelona fans - has a contract with Barcelona until 2014, and earlier today, Balague tweeted:

"Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool all interested in him [Villa]. So is Atletico Madrid. Liverpool asking about Villa in case Luis goes? It's still waiting time for Villa.

"Barcelona are selling, around 12m euros would take him. He wants Premier League football, but has not decided [which] club yet"

Villa - who cost Barcelona €40m in 2010 - is still struggling to regain top form after being out for so long with injury, but according to Barca coach Jordi Roura, he's getting back to his best. He told reporters recently:

“He [Villa] is an exceptional player. He’s a real goal-scorer and bit by bit, he’ll get back to his best level and be even more important for us.”

Villa is not really a prolific goalscorer for Barcelona, which is surprising given the quality surrounding him on the pitch:

* 2010-11: 23 goals/6 assists in 51 apps.
* 2011-12: 11 goals/2 assists in 27 apps.
* 2012-13: 14 goals/5 assists in 39 apps.

I wouldn't blame FSG for rejecting this deal, and it's not even a question of age. Villa's recent injury history is a giant red flag, and there are more prolific strikers out there that Liverpool could sign for similar money.

Having said that, signing someone of Villa's prestige and experience could be a massive boost for the club, and €12m for a player for such a legendary, inspiring player is definitely worth it (IMO)

  1. I don't think it has anything to do with Suarez or any other player leaving. The club needs Villa, Bony, Remy or whoever to add to the lack of strikers already at the club

  2. Would prefer it if we went for someone else. He is a quality footballer but for 12 million when we're on a tight budget as it is would not be wise.

  4. This transfer was a great idea when Rafa wanted him from Valencia, but didn't get backed. Not now... Benteke up top, Suarez and Sturridge either side. All 3 could roam between these positions. Coutinho is awesome at finding a pass at the moment, so he goes behind. 2 deep cm- gerrard- Lucas plus competition for them. Centre backs a must and competition at full back.

    We need to remember he was played out lf position or out wide with Messi favoured in that central role. Injury history is worrying but I don't think he should be written off quite like he is by some. There are players where World class quality will shine through in many cases and signing him will be a statememt of intent.

    Whether he will end up like Shevchenko or Morientes, or have a Henrik Larsson like impact is up for debate but we will prob. forego signing proven excellence and experience for a rough diamond with potential and resale value.

    Signing a 40m euro player for 12m euros after only a few years is good value in my perspective.

  6. Villa is scoring at a rate of once per every 127 minutes played and is among the most prolific in La Liga THIS YEAR. In fact when you consider goals per minute and eliminate penalty kicks since Messi takes them Villa's scoring per minute beats Falco.

    The reality is there are very few strikers out there that are World Class (or possess enough quality), can instantly push us towards that coveted top 4 position and our affordable/available for a transfer and will consider joining a team out of Europe.

    Falcao, Cavani, Neymar, Leandro Damio, Benzema and I
    will throw in Lewandowski are the 25m-40m+ players that fit this category. Jovetic, Jackson Martinez, Pato and possibly Higuain are not far off and are probably the only strikers we could possibly target (however unlikely) that could prove better value than signing Villa.

    Jackson Martinez in particular is on form, will give us explosive power and prolific ability but won't come cheap...

    Realistically though if we can get Villla AND Sergi Canos (Barca wonderkid) it would be a win/win situation. They would both be a bargain and we will have a master and an apprentice. One wants to join the Prem and as long as we outbid Spurs and Arsenal we are in. Canos will be like a Fabregas steal that Barca can do little about.

  9. IF Suarez leaves, if my brother had a pussy and boobs, he'd be my sister, but he has not, so he is my brother. Where does Suarez leaving club come into this, rubbish article about a 31 year old has been.

  11. 12 million for a thirty something year old on at least 100k a week wages is exactly what FSG quite justifiably call a rip off.

    i think we already had borini as a "MEDICAL TEAM QUALITY ASSURANCE" role. Do we need another vacant on that job?

  13. I would rather go for Bony. He is young and strong moreover, he is a proflic goal scorer.

  14. Feels like too many risk elements. Injuries are one thing, especially with a player already past his prime, but what concerns me most is a player who isn't the right age to be embarking on a new career challenge. Think back to Morientes, a player who wasn't even 30 when he joined Liverpool. I don't see why Villa would be much different. Sure, Villa has had more prolific times and seasons where he has bagged tons of goals, but he's not got even a hint of experience outside of Spanish football. One of the big reasons inbound players struggle in England, at least at first, is the time needed to adjust to the pace. I can't imagine a 31 year old footballer settling in quickly when he's faced with a new style of playing that is so different to what he's played his entire life. All that experience and class suddenly counts for little, and then all you're buying is a name. What would motivate him here? What would he really be wanting to achieve? He's at the tail end of his career and probably on a path to losing form, it seems entirely the wrong kind of player to bring in to a club that needs someone who would hit the ground running, work hard for the team and improve on what we've already got in the team.

  15. We already have Suarez, Sturridge, borini and now carrol. How many do we need, especially when we play a 4-5-1. None of the names mentioned are good enough either. Villa is past it, remy is an average player playing for a shite team and bony is nothing more than average either

  16. how is that different villa has been injured and when he is fit barca use him as a rotation option

    ReplyDelete
  17. Its massively different because Morientes sat on the bench and didnt play for over a year and his fitness suffered hugely. Whereas Villa was injured and has come back fit and refreshed and is currently playing and is match sharp!!

  18. Id be happy with that but not Lucas. Hes too slow and clumsey giving away too many free kicks. We need a Diame/Sissoko/Wanyama type in there next to Gerrard

  19. no offence but his coach is bound to big him up if hes trying to off load .....dont want him ....ive a feeling he wouldn't fit in or hack it.....

  20. 9 league goals and 4 league assists in 14 starts and 11 sub appearances is not all that bad for a guy that has taken his time to get back into his groove in such a unorthodox system for a player of his type. But I think it maybe too late for one to be confident about Villa being a success here, especially considering the stage he is in at his career and having that big injury. Top class striker though, so the temptation to want him is understandable. He needs to move from Barca, regardless, as its a very niche role, the forward roles either side of Messi. Tello is a better fit for it than Sanchez and Villa. Although me thinks Guardiola could get Tello for Bayern, as his rumored contract situation apparently includes a low release clause.

  21. I could see Henry and Werner fall off their seats over this one he does in no way fit the policy is old and injury riddled no chance never.
