'We don't have the money' - BR on transfers, €5m Ilori bid, & star's return

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has attempted to play down expectations for the upcoming transfer window, claiming that money will be tight will be tight over the summer.

In his pre-QPR press conference today, Rodgers praised the 'terrific' job being done by the club's scouting department, but urged fans not to get too carried away with their expectations this summer. He told reporters:

"We’ll hopefully have a good window, but we don’t have the money some of the teams above us have.

"We don’t have money to waste. We really have to make sure we bring in the right types of players, and if we can do that, I believe we can kick on again".

Reports this week claim that Liverpool have put in a €5m bid for Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori, but when asked today whether this is true, Rodgers simply said:

"There’s no bids in for anyone yet".

Andy Carroll's future is still very much up in the air, and Rodgers didn't sound very enthusiastic about the prospect of the big man's return:

"He [Carroll] has had a difficult season as a whole because of injury; it's a bit frustrating, but it's been good to see the bit of form he's showed towards the end of the season.

"He wanted to go out and play football, and he's done very well. We'll assess it at the end of the season and take it from there
"

  1. Queue - FSG is sucking us dry and we'll be relegated next year comments as a result of suggestive headline. So he hasn't said we don't have money, he's said we don't have money to waste. No change there then. We don't buy players for 50 million but who does? With a similar net spend in the summer as we had last summer, we can get pretty much all of the players mentioned over the past few months.

  2. Agree, this is simply about managing expecttions given we have been/will be linked with loads of players over next few weeks. This is the time, between season end and July, when it speculation is highest but nobody gets signed because they're all on hols. FSG has provided money since they arrived so I see no reason why this won't happen now. A repeat of Jan business will do nicely.

  3. I believe the money will be there if the main targets are going to come, with the sale of Carroll and a few others there will be a bit of a kitty.
Rodgers is playing down available funds as i believe the club is keen to shake off this over paying for talent.
But never the less i dont expect too much will be put in by the club 20 mill plus sales will be ample most likely.

He said we don't have money like the rest of the teams above! Meaning city and Chelsea they can spend 100 million! And it's fine. We will have about 30-40 million to spend. Which is enough also player sales. :)

  5. FSG will Give no more then 20 mil plus We have to sell like always We will sell coates 8m carroll 12m skrtel 12 mil assadi 1m downing 10m made pepe15mil who knows. We should sel borini and allen we wont because that will prove that 20% fans fav rodgers was not any good. So 43mil on players sold plus 20mil FSG 63 mil not bad to buy . But We Know that wont happen We will sign two players last week transfer window thats our form.people wont agree with the amounts i put on players thats fine could be wrong put you get my point SELL BEFORE BUY HICK GILLETT II

  6. Got to love the headline's poor suggestiveness.

Missing key words out of a sentence to make it look like something its not, awful behaviour. I wouldn't even call it journalism, more stupidity.

Last summer they gave 30 million why would that change?:) also 7 million to get Rodgers here... If they give us 30-35 million to play with that's fine too also you would get more than 1 million for assaidi. We only got him cheap because he contract was running out...

  8. So all that talks about this year being balancing the book period was rubbish. All the talks about having the financial power to compete with anyone was rubbish. FSG might have a long term plan but I have to agree they make false promises. They lied when they boasted about their financial capabilities. Hard to trust them.

  9. Do you read the post before you reply . But i get it liverpool4life you have the right answers i suppose every thing to date that FSg have said about buying the best players in world has happen . ill sleep better now knowning i was wrong your right. I suppose 7th 8th 6th 7th and next year 6th _ 8th is step in right direction , I also see you have the right value of player how silly of me read post before replying.

  10. Hard to trust them we are living of sponsors dollars isnt it liverpool and man united both owners american . who take the most money out to finace the loans. where they bought the club on there assets. But you are 100% right where are these world class player people talk of the money they put in but who have they sold from torres onwards. add players sold to money made to the money FSG put in directly .

    ReplyDelete
  11. Admittedly, the original post is a bit "weird".

In one sentence, you sort of agree with the method of increasing the budget by selling before you buy.

In the last sentence you sort of disagree with the method of increasing the budget by selling before you buy and throwing in the H&G reference.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with selling before you buy to make sure the money is there. It's a balancing act. If you sell too quickly, you lose a bit of leverage because the other team now knows you need a guy to fill in a spot. If you buy too quickly, you lose a bit of leverage because the other team now knows you need to get rid of someone.

As long as FSG provides a good starting budget for BR to utilize and build upon, I'll be fine with the strategy. And that's what it sounds like is going to happen.

The only problem I'd have with FSG is if BR has to create his whole budget through player sales.

  13. How much debt did FSG put in Liverpool? None. So your statement about American owners taking money to finance the loans is not applicable to FSG. FSG allowed for the transfers of Coutinho and Sturridge in January with no funds from player sales, is that not good enough?
Or are you expecting them to put up 40M for Falcao?
Being 'American' associates FSG with such a negative stereotype because of a small handful of American owners that in recent history have ruined the clubs in the UK, and any move on FSG's part is met with such resistance. All else equal if FSG was British they wouldn't have nearly the same image.
I agree that their transfer policy (must be young) is a little excessive, but I would hardly say that they don't spend money on players; unless you're comparing to City, Chelsea, and PSG.

I did read what you said, but your saying FSG will give us 20 million? when they have came in they have always gave more than that, also "sell before buy" not really we need depth in our team so it be more buying than selling.

  15. Chirag your comment is speculative at best. FSG have committed funds so far during their tenure at Liverpool, however poor management and scouting thus far have no doubt left them ruing spending any money at all. January's buys will no doubt have gone some distance in convincing them that our scouting network is on the right track, so don't jump to conclusions simply because we aren't being linked with the Falcao's and Cavani's of this world.

  16. I believe there was a £30 million debt included upon purchase, however this is acceptable as working capital.

  17. we need a proven cb and another midfielder ..preferably one who can impose himself on the game ...the quality of these players depends on who we ship out and what we get for them ......rogers comments suggest theres not a lot in the pot ....

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can understand BR trying to play down expectations. You just have spend a few minutes on these forums alone to see a lot of people are in la la land when it comes to wanting the team to buy players.

The fact is we are not Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal.

We do not have 50, 60 70.. 100 mil to spend on players.

I see people talking about 60, 70mil worth of players.. its utter madness.

    ReplyDelete
  19. FSG have the money. Which part of transfer windows showed they don't. It just it might need to follow their policy of young player.

But I just think BR are playing the card of I don't have the money to make sure other clubs don't play hard to get for their player

    ReplyDelete
  20. the last part of your reply is the the problem .(The only problem I'd have with FSG is if BR has to create his whole budget through player sales.) I agree with you 100% spot on. The part of my reply which you dont under is sarcasim. three parts of your reply is correct and i agree

  21. There you go its out Like every year why dont the FSG fans read this post before they start having a go at people who dont like FSG.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Maybe we'll see something like this for Carragher next;

'You won't see me crying' - Liverpool legend does not care love the club.

    :P

  23. So lucky of LFC got such little debt. Why Utd can still come out money to buy while reducing debt??? From owner pocket after being put in such huge debt??? And why LFC take some money to invest??? They making loss??? Ohhh....shit must be Utd robbing the bank. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  24. BR said if LFC not getting top 4 don't blame him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You can forget about De Vrij anyway, he's just signed an extension at Feyenoord. Smart kid.

    ReplyDelete
  26. And why on this wonderful world would we not sell Carrol, Spearing, Assaid, Pacheco etc? They add no value to our current squad and they cost us wages. The difference with sell before buy and this is that we don't sell these players to buy others, we sell them because they're not good enough. And then that money is put back into the squad. Which is great! If FSG would not put it back into the squad you'd be moaning that they're skimming off the top!

  28. I see red people7:27 am, May 18, 2013

UTD have a stadium double the size of ours. That is why they can manage their debt plus they keep on winning trophies which leads to more income.

FSG as owners can compete but Liverpool Football Club's income just does not even come close to pay the wages that UTD can dish out.

FSG have said from the start that they are not here to bankroll the club. They want to make us financially strong as UTD but that will only happen once our stadium capacity has increased and start winning trophies like we used to back in the 70's and 80". This will not happen overnight but FSG have the brains to get us there.

There are two questions for those who have no trust in FSG

    1. If City's owner decides tomorrow that he has had enough of his hobby which is City then that club will be sent into the dark ages. Would you rather have a owner that has limitless amounts of cash and treats the club like a toy but can leave anytime if they get bored of that toy?

    or

Have owners like FSG who are looking out for the longevity of Liverpool Football Club?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really don't get what is up with some fans below. Not spending 100s of million of pounds on transfers is not a problem. Our owners are not sugar-daddies, here to satisfy your unrealistic expectations. They are here to run a team without having to empty their own pockets and they've shown that we can attract good players for reasonable fees in every transfer window. Saying we won't spend money like Chelsea or City is hardly something to get upset over. We'll have a decent budget to sign a couple of good players, players who will need to be certainly as good as the ones we already have. That means we can expect to spend 10-20 million per player with almost certainly 2 players in bound during the summer window. That's just fine as far as I'm concerned.

  30. thats all they do arsenal not going to sell 5 players togive the manager money. man united are not going to sell players to support the manager chelsea are not selling Cech mata terry lampard to give jose money . Give our manager money no matter who he is let him buy players now not last week of transfers where we always buy one support the manager in market . straight away. not waiting till you sell to buy one . sell Carroll assadi coates who ever .

    ReplyDelete
  31. ok we get it your not happy with FSG but please youve made your point so do you have to keep repeating it over and over?

FSG have never done anything but back our mangers but they are clearly bleeding the club dry!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Is Rodgers really going to come out and say yeah we have money to spend??? An automatic £5m slapped on any fee!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I know, very misleading title. What Liverpool don't have the same amount of money as Man utd, and City and Chelsea? WHAT??? Nothing we didn't know.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think I understand what you are saying - two things;
    United have champions league money
    Unites have a bigger stadium

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it a little disingenuous and, dare I say it without risking a three day ban, a bit misleading to use half a sentence as a headline. BR did not say 'We don't have the money' but 'We don't have the money to waste' which is entirely different. He is spot in that we are not a sugar daddy club who can buy mega-expensive players like the Blues off this world but then I don't want us to be. I want our club to be respected for its integrity in buying and developing talent not merely buying a £30m player every time it takes the owner's fancy.

So we will be careful. So the fantasy league type postings all over the place are nonsense.... Did anyone think otherwise? This is nothing to do with FSG being bad owner or BR being a bad manager. It is to do with being a club fighting hard to stay with the top clubs who have money to burn as best we can. It's all very well social led fans blathering on about who we could buy that would solve all our problems overnight but they are just idiots who don't stop to ask who is going to pay for all that. Money doesn't grow in trees and with FFP rules coming in at least we might start to see a slightly more level playing field.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't think you do, What happend with the money LFC win during 70' & 80'???

Utd stadium not grow by itself ( if can so can yours).

Your commercial team not doing enough to help your club to earn more beside winning the league (luckily EPL not like SPL top 2 having vast % of the pool money) / CL.

Utd still paying money for the debt yearly abt 60 Million.

    ReplyDelete
  37. In the 70's and 80's the money from sponsors and tv rights was nothing compared to post 90's. For example, the PL TV rights sold for 3 billion now, back in the 80's it was hardly worth 3 million. United's success coincided with PL's growth (esp, them winning the first two PL titles; it sends out a msg to sponsors that we are the one's you want to sponsor). They just got lucky.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Are you kidding me Arsenal will not sell??? Arsenal have been selling their star players for two seasons in a row now! And who says they'll wait till they sell one before they buy another? Did they wait to sell anyone last year? Or the year before that when they paid 14 million for Henderson before the transfer window was a day old? Or maybe January when they signed Sturridge on Jan 1st? At least if you're going to make a point try to get your facts in order. As said, we have dead wood around Anfield and there is no point to keeping that around. None. And now we have owners who are not only getting rid of the dead wood, they're putting the proceeds back into the squad on top of spending a net amount that is only topped by arguably the five richest clubs in the world!

    ReplyDelete
  39. More depth does not equal more players, just better players. Imagine what happens when you get rid of the dead wood and buy 4 players who are all an improvement on the current first teamers. You're first team gets stronger and so does your bench.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Still u don't get it. Why not expand the stadium during 80' or 90'??? That time expanding still cheap compare to now. Even St. James Park bigger than yours. Don't give lame excuse.
