'He's embarrassing' - Angry Hamann accuses midfield star of faking injury. Fair...?

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has accused Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell of deliberately feigning injury during the Cottagers' 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal earlier today.

Sidwell - who returned from a three match suspension for today's game - received a second red card in two games for his horrendous challenge on Mikel Arteta.

As you can see from the following video, the midfielder lay prostrate on the ground immediately after he scythed down the Spaniard, and clearly acted like he'd been injured:

After witnessing Sidwell's theatrics, Hamann barked:

"[Steve] Sidwell got sent off in the last two games he played for poor challenges and both times he pretended he got hurt. Embarrassing"

I think Hamann is spot on here - why does Sidwell grab his head after the tackle? He knows he's going to get sent off, so it's clearly a last-ditch attempt to fool the referee.

I think most fans will agree that Sidwell deserved to be sent off for his horror tackle, but I find it amusing that the same fans will (almost certainly) argue vehemently than none of the following incidents are worthy of a red card:

Tomas Hubocan incident

Dave Jones incident

Kevin Mirallas incident

This is a carbon copy of the Jones incident above, and Suarez was booked for this challenge:

Sylvain Distin incident

Gonzalo Jara incident

Clearly, these were all accidents. No malice intended. Could've happened to anyone :-)

After the Arsenal game, Fulham boss Martin Jol refused to defend Sidwell for his challenge. He observed:

"I can't defend him [Sidwell] because that would only sound ridiculous. I was annoyed with him but he says it is not intentional. He will regret that tackle. It was the first foul that spoilt the game"

Bravo to Martin Jol for telling it like it is. Brendan Rodgers should take a leaf out of his book.

  3. I agree. Its all he does is bash our one true star player! won't be happy till he's gone and we're just a mid table team! I wonder if we'd had Zidane, would he be hounded out too??

  4. I don't understand you Jaimie. All you articles are about all these dream players you want to sign, and we have possibly one of the best players in the world and you always slate him! If we had more players Like Suarez we may actually compete, yet you'd do your best to hound him out! Any blog you post with no relevance to Liverpool you always tie into Your Suarez hating! Its like you're Manu or something. I know you bloggers only do these these to create something out of nothing but its juts bitter and tedious from you now! Zidane had these same Characteristics and had he played for Liverpool I suspect you;d hound him out also! We have enough outsiders moaning about Suarez so why are you always picking on one of our own?Never do you stand up for him and yet he's one of the few good things thats happened to us over the last few years. Once he goes and we can't attract any world class players I hope you'll regret all your stupid blogs.."fair?"

  5. there's not doubting Luis has a violent tendency , but you have to show the tackles against him too. for example, the chilean grabbed his gonads before that punch.
there are many players like this, its part of some players temperament and nature..but what do you do..ban them forever? Luis is irreplaceable , and when he's gone, you'll miss him too.

  6. Throwing the Suarez videos into an otherwise mildly interesting piece is simply a shameless attempt to drum up traffic and comments.

There isn't even a logical flow onto the Suarez stuff. Pathetic

Pretending to be injured to avoid a card is a very old trick. Some referees foolishly fall for it, gladly not on this occasion

  7. Reel 'em in Jaimie! Like shooting fish in a barrell...

  8. The witch hunt goes on! We all can agree that Suarez does stupid silly things that definitely warrant punishment, but it seems every time another player does something wrong it has to be compared to Suarez. Yet when Suarez gets it wrong he's out there on his own.We all know the story so why keep repeating it? to draw comments or a genuine dislike of the man? John Terry didn't shake Bernsteins hand,no doubt it will be compared to Suarez/Evra.

  11. I dont get the link between someone faking injury and Suarez. Did i miss something here.

  12. Can't see the logical flow from Sidwell feigning injury to Suarez's admittedly nasty challenges.

Miralles deserved his one, he was bullying Sterling that day, Suarez stepped in and resolved the situation

I'll be at the derby next weekend, hope Suarez doesn't do something silly tomorrow. He is an inspiration, everyone needs to see him live. How many yellows is he away from another ban?

  14. These Suarez incidents have no link whatsoever with the Sidwell challenge or faking injuries. JK complains that people say he has a vendetta against Suarez, well he is spoon feeding his haters now. What a pointless article.

  17. Okay, I usually agree with you, but after you compared it to those suarez incidents, I was completely lost with you. If you want to prove you have no Suarez vendetta, then this article did you no favours!

  18. It's like you've bagged those fans who would defend suarez but slate sidwell, as an excuse to bag suarez himself. very sneaky mate!

  19. oops another dig at suarez it only happens with days that end in a y

  20. Suarez punched the guy who felt his...you know what. I don't understand why Suarez didn't kill him.

  21. I couldn't care less if people think I have a 'Suarez vendetta' - any chance I have to point of fan hypocrisy, I will take it, which is why I've included Suarez in this article. Quite a few of my friends/family are LFC fans, and they were all foaming at the mouth in their condemnation of Sidwell's challenge, but they fight tooth and nail to defend Suarez. That is interesting to me, hence the comparison. It's the same principle with most pro_Suarez fans - it's nothing to do with him per se, but with fan hypocrisy, which I loathe.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I normally have no problem when you highlight suarez incidents in order to highlight the hypocrisy of some of our own fans. I just felt something else about this article though!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Seems more like you just wanted to post a collection of Suarez naughty antics.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well then make the argument about LFC fan hypocrisy rather than solely Suarez fan hypocrisy. I know it's based on Suarez, hence only Suarez incidents provided, but why not throw in the Shelvey challenge vs United, or countless Gerrard challenges over the years. By only using Suarez incidents you play the argument into your own hands, it's in your favour. Because that way you can just counterclaim the "hypocritical" fans by saying "because it's Suarez you defend him"...

I don't think most fans are as biased/blind/unreasonable as you like to think. Present us with some similar challenges, and I'm sure the more civil posters on here will give you an honest response.

I know you like to be as objective as possible - but IMO objectivity should be natural and not forced. I think in a lot of these types of situations you see things how you want to see them. I don't think it's reasonable to address the 100% die hard LFC or nothing fans as the majority, in this instance they are in the minority.

  28. 'Fans have a tendency to favour their own players' shock.

I'm sure that's come as a massive surprise to everybody.

What an amazing piece of investigative journalism.

  29. Fan is short for fanatic, which can be defined as a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal, particularly for a religious or political cause or in some cases sports, or with an obsessive enthusiasm for a pastime or hobby.

You are merely pointing out that the definition of fan is accurate.

Argument could be completed by saying that because you do not display "uncritical zeal" you are not a fan.

You are an admirer of the myth of Shankly / LFC traditions etc and seem like a genuine lover of sport / sportsmanship.

But once sport gets anyway competitive, sportsmanship is often first thing to be dropped. Lance Armstrong, Thierry Henry, Ben Johnson, Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney etc have all totally violated the code of their sport at times to suit them.

Sportsmanship means the same thing to me as "spreading democracy" to Americans. A contradiction in terms

  30. After watching the tackle, my first thought was that Sidwell did an Evans. (with reference to the 50/50 challenge between him and Shelvey back in September)

Also, I do not understand why you dragged Suarez needlessly into this. Maybe it was an attempt to give power to your article by taking the moral high ground? In that case, you could have used a variety of players, not just one, because this implies irrational (aka - emotional) dislike towards one player in particular. Evidence of this is that this article was originally about Sidwell but it ended up mentioning one negative thing about Sidwell 1 and 4 about Suarez. I doubt whether that does any good to an author claiming to be objective, especially with all the statistics he quotes. (Please, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy reading those statistics and appreciate the effort that goes into compiling them, it's just that in instances like this, moralising everything throws this work into the bin due to the extreme subjectivity)

  32. I see no mention of Johnny Evans feigning injury when Jonjo Shelvey got sent off against Man Utd. Evans went in with 2 feet but pretended to be injured too! His challenge was defo a red card challenge. I have checked this site constantly and I have never known a supposed LFC football fan be so critical of Liverpool FC and their players!!
