Done deal: Attacker who 'admires' Suarez confirms transfer. LFC's first signing...?

In January, Liverpool scouts travelled to Australia to watch Melbourne Victory attacker Marco Rojas in action against Sydney FC, and earlier this week, Rojas has hinted that a move abroad could definitely be on the cards. The Melbourne Victory star has now confirmed that he'll be playing in Europe next season, and it seems likely it will be with Liverpool.

With 15 goals and eight assists, Rojas has had a great season with Victory, and at the A-League awards on Monday, he won 'Young Footballer of the Year'.

When asked recently about the possibility of a summer transfer to the Premier League, Rojas told the New Zealand Herald:

"We're still going over it, Dad [his agent] and me. Once the season's finished, I'll be able to speak about it a lot better."

Things seem to have changed in the space of a few days, though, and Rojas has now confirmed that he will be playing in Europe next season. He told reporters:

"It's every footballer's dream to play in Europe and I'm over the moon to be able to say I'm about to live that dream very soon"

Liverpool have tracked Rojas for a while now, and according to The Mirror a few months ago:

"Anfield officials sent back a positive report on Marco Rojas, the 21-year-old Melbourne Victory starlet who scored one goal and set up another against Sydney"

Responding to Rojas' departure, Victory coach Ange Postecoglou said:

"He's obviously a very talented young man, and we knew we couldn't stand in the way of his European ambitions. He's rightly attracted plenty of attention around the globe for his efforts this year"

Liverpool travel to Australia during the summer, and will face Melbourne victory in one of their games, so Reds fans will get the chance to see how Rojas fares against top class players. The 21-year is massively excited about the prospect, and in an interview with LFC.com, he enthused:

"I'm most looking forward to playing against Steven Gerrard. I admire everything about him. Luis Suarez is world class too. Daniel Sturridge is another exciting young player and Philippe Coutinho looks special too. All throughout the team, Liverpool have great players and that's why it's so exciting to be coming up against them."

Obviously, there are no foregone conclusions in football, but I'd be massively surprised if Rojas isn't Liverpool's first signing of the summer.

  1. As a Victory supporter myself ive seen alot of rojas.
Very talented player but rarely defends sometimes when he is within yards of the ball he just stops.
At the moment he is a big fish in a little pond, he is talented but will need to move to a more difficult league to really show off his talents.
Also if im not mistaken the liverpool officials at the Victory V Sydney game was one of the Business executives to see the atmosphere at the A-Leagues biggest fixture to help with the decision of wherther to bring Liverpool to Melbourne or Sydney in pre season.

  6. he plays in a league which is equivlent to the conference at best,he would be another one for the future thats all stick to your soft porn movies lol;-)

  7. who cares what league he plays in, talent is talent. we can't complain when the club overpays for players and also complain when the club tries to take a gamble on a player who might turn out to be a steal. By the way Coutinho was meant to be for the future and he's having an impact now. This guy is older.

  8. Jason you raise fair points we need now not later, so I too am not filled with excitement. Also this committee business must be a show of NO confidence in BR or maybe it's a reflection on the waste by previous managers?
JK what do you think about this committee lark?

  10. the A league is equivalent to the pub leagues so he should be about equivalent to our under 16's level, if that. you never know, but how many great aussie players are there?
hopefully he'll be good enough for the u 21's at least (and only have cost a few sheckles)

  14. Looks a bit lighweight, not much height and muscle in the squad.

  15. Naughty? No. My stalker made a frivolous complaint to the ASA because I gave prizes to the most prolific commentors on the site. The ASA gave me grief about it; I told them to get stuffed and stop wasting my time. Bunch of jobsworths.

  16. Well it's a good thing am a young boy cause I will witness whatever you saying. Am not the one who is here on Jamie's Blog all the time complaining and blaming BR about all LFC short comings. We are talking about important things and you talking about how loud they are going to sing about Ralfa, who is the young boy now? Have you taught that they will sing his name just to get at Chelski fans????

  17. Hey guys, I live in OZ and have watched him a few times, he's a cracking player who will add a lot of quality to our squad

  18. No Boss, I'm against the signing of this young kiwi boy. I propose we sign Jordan Rhodes, top scorer in championship, William Grigg, 2nd top scorer in league one, last but not least, Tom Ince, all 3 are young, more importantly, all English, for a combined of 110 mil pounds. Please do not be worried about funds, we can always sell under-performing players such as Borini, your favorite player, Joe Allen, Assaidi, Suso, Reina, Skrtel, Lucas, all non-English and of all concern, all non-KD's signings. Therefore the net spending on these 3 players will greatly reduced. Hey man! Gotta believe me, these 3 boys, combined with the likes of Jordan Henderson, AC and Stewart downing, will blaze the EPL like cavalry units against rake holding peasants and send LFC right back to the very top of EPL, qualify for Europe again and be a quadruple champion the season after next. Relived the sweet dreams of the Shankly-era LFC!!! Oops, pardon me...I forgot to mention sack BR this summer and re-hire KD and Comolli!

  25. Oussama Assaidi is much2 better from him. This player only just come to wasting times with LFC.It is so hard but LFC must release out deadwood or passenger into the team......A.Carroll, F.Borini and S.Downing is going rusty talent and sink in football carrier soon.Football is about result and result is about how many goal did you score every season. Please tell us, how goal now that this trio already score in 2 season. Not very worth with the fee you paying for them now. Also LFC must review on Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson too. They are just ordinary players and can hit to maximum level.LFC must improve at CENTRE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD before fixing centre back areas.Fortress must be solid and tough, if the door of fortress too easy leaking the ball ( can penetrate), we cannot give biggest hope to defenders players. They will tired cover up others players weakness and cannot focus on own duty.LFC must looking to sign in versatile players and having advantage can keep scoring the goal.In era R.Benitez, every players and position can able score the goal.LFC MAKE BIG MISTAKE SIGNING CARROLL,BORINI AND DOWNING FOR EXPENSIVE FEE.VERY WORST PLAYERS....

  26. Melbourne v Liverpool is a 103,000 sell out already, what a crowd that is. The Aussies went mad for tickets, apparently the game is part of the Rojas deal. The kid is the A-league player of the year, Is his contract already expired???...........

  29. He is no gamble as he has quality, does he have enough?, let's give him the chance to prove it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. 30,000 + tickets were sold in the first 30 minutes of sale and by the time the tickets were availible to the general public there were only a hand full of individual seat availible at the mcg i believe

  31. Being that I'm Australian, I can tell you that this league isn't equivalent to conference league at best. It is a relatively new league, but the top couple of teams in the league qualify for the Asian Champion's League, therefore, it is a good quality league, a league that this season had Alessandro Del Piero and he was overshadowed by the play of Marco Rojas. He may play in, as you put it, a substandard league, but he has World Cup experience already as he was in the New Zealand squad that made it to the last World Cup, and he is also of Chilean heritage, so has that South American flair. He is 21, so is young enough to fall into our policy, but is experienced as well, as he broke onto the scene when he was 16 or 17. You probably don't remember, but earlier on in the season, I actually brought up Marco Rojas as a shrewd move, he is a quality player and would be suited to our style of football.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Second rate at best, which is why Juventus is also after him, along with clubs in the Bundesliga. He is very much sought after and won the player of the league award, ahead of the likes of Del Piero. Oh wait, that would mean Del Piero is third rate at best. Rojas can play any position across the front 3, just imagine a front 3 of Coutinho, Suarez and Rojas, that is scary good.

    ReplyDelete
  33. No, Liverpool scouts actually made the trip to Australia to scout this player, the same player who just won the player of the year award and is also being scouted by Juventus. I live in Australia and have seen him play, he is lightning quick, can score, he went through a purple patch, about 6 or 7 games, where everything he tried, he scored, and when I say everything, I mean he was scoring some absurdly skillful goals. He can play on either wing, attacking mid, or a roaming role, so he is extremely versatile, and not only does he score goals, he sets them up too, plus he has the South American flair, being that his parents are from Chile. If indeed we are the team to sign him, he may need a bit of beefing up as he is small, and may need time to adjust, but he will be a top, top signing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. he may be all you say but the fact is he will only be here to make the numbers up at 1st and we have plenty of players like that we need players now not in a couple of seasons

    ReplyDelete
  35. so i take it you do not rate him like some of our other aussie fans

    ReplyDelete
  36. imo its why fsg got rid of kenny because they would not have got away with it with kenny, but rodgers is just chuffed to have the job no doubt rodgers will come out with a statement that its a fantastic thing for the club to do

    ReplyDelete
  37. How is this guy not a "now not later" player? He is a full international, made his senior debut in 2009-10, has played 3 full seasons and this season, won both the Johnny Warren medal, which is the medal for player of the season, but also the young player of the season. Not only did he score 15 goals, he also had 9 assists. Think what of a cross between Sterling and Coutinho, but older than both and that is what Marco Rojas is. Top quality player for now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I believe so?, It has been incredible they say, apparently all tickets went in 24hrs, wow!!!. I hear Indonesia is Liverpool mental?, they reckon it will be like Beatlemania when we roll into town.................the pull of Liverpool cannot be underestimated!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. i am probably older than you and yes, i am tired of "football experts" who think they know it all, negative little man,!

  47. I will reserve my judgement until i have seen him play unlike yourself the "expert"

    ReplyDelete
  48. so we sign ever player then judge them lol thats the way to go we can waste even more money

    ReplyDelete
  49. who we sign is not up to you or me, this kid has been watched by our scouts who know a lot more than you and me, but i would not condemn him without giving him a chance which is what you are doing, we don't know he has signed for LFC yet either!! I happen to agree about Rhodes, he "may" be worth a punt, we had the chance to sign him before he went to B'Burn, we didn't buy him, possibly a mistake, who knows, if you are going to make hasty comments be prepared for people to disagree with you, do not resort to snotty comments like "silly boy" trying to sound superior, what you believe is not gospel mate, and as far as Rafa is concerned he is history and not coming back, get over it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Rate him whats to rate this is liverpool . when a near 40 year old Del piero comes to this country and is a master . australian football has problem. In 13 years i have missed 2 games and left wedding for liverpool i have Lfc tattoos and youll never walk alone, good player in australia but this is liverpool. We are suppose to move foward. He can not tie Viduka or kewall boot in there prime. good for liverpool hell no

    ReplyDelete
  51. Im australian he is good for A-league Viduka and harry are our best australian be can polish there boots. jason carr might have it wrong buy what league we are same at but we are signing Del piero 38 heskey 34 Ono 33 rojas 21 thats our best players in the league in no correct order. so is that a good think for a league ?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Never in the field of football transfers has any player from a 'lower ' league ever become a top player, especially not Ian Rush, he was useless, anybody could score goals for Chester.. John Aldridge was a big name player wasn't he? Keegan was playing for the mighty Scunthorpe no wonder we signed him, proven high class player...
    Unbelievable.
What we have here gentlemen, is a lost art. The art of spotting somebody who can do it at the top level BEFORE he gets there. Lost in the rush to sign 'proven top league' strikers. Like Morientes, for instance- that went well....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Del Piero might be as old as the dinosaurs, but he is still a world class talent, even if he isn't a world class player anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  54. What on earth are you going on about? You don't give a good representation of Australia. I also live in Australia, but at least I am educated. We poached our scouts from Manchester City, which means Man City are not helping us and especially not Man Utd, the scouts used to work for Man City, they now work for us, as Aleksandr the Meerkat would say, simples.

    ReplyDelete
  55. How much will be invested for the next season. Is it true that not much will be invested?

    ReplyDelete
  56. del piero was a class player and atrue servant to his club am not taking anything away from him

    ReplyDelete
  57. sorry m8 do you really think our scouts no alot more than the average fan based on previous signing over the last few years

    ReplyDelete
  58. mike aldridge signed for decent money, and times have changed the academys pick these players up earlier now so normally there at the top clubs or clubs with good academys rhodes imo is one who would make the step up but fsg want to buy the young players cheap imo why sign 10 youngsters with a slight chance when you could go for one or two with a real chance

    ReplyDelete
  59. I cant see you dont read all liverpool news and that your not a real liverpool fan . just to help you there was a Artical that FSG called man united for advice on how to run successful club. And also Rafa benitez said the last american owners asked him when is the players draft . I just put you to shame.

    ReplyDelete
  60. they don't always get it right, and they only recommend players, i agree they have been poor for a long time at LFC, I also think our scouting system sucked, (it has been changed) I have said so for years, since Tom Saunders left years ago its been jobs for the boys, i could have picked better players too, (well i like to think that) but judging a kid who may not have signed for us and moaning about it is not the way m8, when Kevin Keegan was signed had you heard of him? what league did he come from? i rest my case

    ReplyDelete
  61. but as i have said times have changed the academys pick them up a lot earlier now

    ReplyDelete
