No chance: Lawro warns £17m star he'll never 'make it' at LFC. Game over...?

With three goals and one assist in his last three games, Liverpool flop Andy Carroll is on a bit of a hot streak at West Ham, and with Sam Allardyce recently admitting that the striker is 'too expensive' for the Hammers, there's a possibility that Carroll end up back at Anfield this summer. If that happens, does the 23-year old have a future at the club? Reds legend Mark Lawrenson doesn't think so.

In his column for the Liverpool Daily Post yesterday, Lawro dismissed the possibility of Carroll being at Liverpool next season. He observed:

"I can’t see Andy Carroll making it at Anfield. There’s been a bit of talk recently that Rodgers may give the striker another chance, but I doubt it.

"The manager has clearly decided to go down the route of building a team around a mobile centre forward rather than a target man. Liverpool will look to get the best deal for Carroll this summer"

Lawro is not the only ex-Red who feels this way. In recent weeks, Jan Molby and Jamie Carragher have also argued that Carroll is a dead duck at Liverpool.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Molby observed:

"It looks as though Andy Carroll’s Liverpool career is over. He simply doesn’t fit into Rodgers’ plans, not now and not ever."

Redknapp told the Daily Mail:

"I don’t see him [Carroll] having a future at Liverpool. If they don’t think he’s worth £15million, somebody else surely must"

A Carroll return to LFC would be a retrograde step in the club's forward progression (IMO), and I hope Rodgers sticks to his guns when the summer transfer window comes around. The club needs all the money it can get this summer, and £17m (€20m) from the Carroll sale would help the club buy more players suited the Rodgers' preferred style of play.

Having said that, the club may not even get £17m. West Ham allegedly can't afford that, and according to The Telegraph, Newcastle will 'open the bidding at £7 million' although they are 'willing to negotiate' and could 'raise their bid to the £10 million'.

Worst case scenario: Liverpool make a £28m loss on Carroll. If that's what it takes to get him out the door, then just do it. I can't see FSG accepting that, though. They'd probably force Rodgers to use him over making a £28m loss, and if Carroll is here at the start of next season, I'm sure that will be the reason why.

Is there any way back for Carroll? Would you rather he stayed, or Liverpool took a £28m loss to get him off the books...?

  1. I would follow his departure up with sales of Suarez, Shelvey, Spearing and Henderson, so that (with the addition of allocated transfer funds) the summer transfer window brings us a couple of quality players and even then it does not end in a financial loss for letting Carroll leave.

  2. The loss has already been made, those responsible have already been sacked and selling him would at least get him off our books. I'm sure FSG see it that way as well.

  3. Maybe one last chance for Carroll as impact sub. I don't think BR will still be managing LFC next January and new manager might have another ideas. Can't make loss of 28mn just because BR don't know any other way of playing football. Carroll would have been better option than Borini this season as backup.

  4. To an extent, footballingwise, I am starting to feel sorry for him. It is not his fault that we paid a diabolical amount of money for him. I blame KD and DC for this. Splashing out so much money on a long ball player with less than 6 months experience in the PL. I mean, come on.

I would have loved for him to be a success. But injuries did play a part in that. I think he still has potential and needs to be better managed. Sam's management would not shape him into a Mario Gomez type of player. I still believe with the right coaching he could still adjust to our way of playing but of of course it's all about time, which is something fans don't want to give and clubs can't afford at time.

If we can get a suitable amount for him then I would be happy. We will not get over £12M for him.

  5. suarez ,henderson, your joking do you not watch any matches suarez the player of the season hederson as come on leaps and bounds ,

  6. Did I state Suarez was a bad player? Regarding Henderson, his 'leaps and bounds' are 'leaps and bounds' of a mid-table team, not a team that wishes to be challenging for the top 4 of the Premier League.

  7. on another subject ,ian ayres latest comments(all lfc future transfers will be decided by a committee and not just brendon rodgers)i rest my case about rodgers being fsg,s yes man,

  8. there are a lot worse players at anfield than him allen, borrini, assaidi, and imo i would also put sturridge and downing up for sale before henderson

  9. This is exactly what we dont need. There is no guarantee that someone coming in, in January would do any better. If FSG want instant results, then they will have to spend like Man City did.

These things take time, and constantly changing managers doesnt help.

  11. True true. We need stability.

  12. so how long do you give rodgers shall we give him another 3or 4 years like this season ,at the end of the day hes a yes man and should never have been given the job in the 1st place,it will end in tears the sooner the better imo

  14. No not at all. I didnt say that. My point is its no good changing a manager every year, if you dont have a great season. Firslty it gives a terrible message to other potential managers (look at the joke that is Chelsea). Secondly, the players will have to keep 'getting to know' new managers and styles, and the manager will have to do the same with the players, which doesnt happen instantly, and can sometimes take the first few months.

I think he should be given another full season. Unless something goes terribly wrong. But I think that we will be better next season. (providing we keep Suarez)

Rodgers wasnt my first choice as a manager, but he is, so I will at least give him a couple of seasons.

  15. Henderson can be worth what we paid for him.(ONLY if he stays at LFC for the rest of his career)

  16. Bye, just bye, Andy Carroll. The sooner we close this chapter, the better. An absolute joke of a transfer. Anything above £8m, we should be happy with.

  17. i would not waste a full season on rodgers 10 games max next season to turn us round or cut our losses and get rid

  18. I'd give BR one more season providing his summer transfers hit the ground running & they strengthen in the right areas. One more transfer will ensure KK's legacy cannot be used as an excuse, at present it still as KK's influence! AC is just too slow & cumbersome to ever fit in, I say we cut our losses. I watched the hammers game & their counter attack was slow, which cant be helped by AC. Firstly AC is the type that needs to play every game otherwise his weight goes up & fitness will drop along with his transfer value. Other option negotiate another loan deal next season to keep him fit & in the window. TBH if we swapped him for Jordan Rhodes as well as bring in someone of quality! Looks like we missed a trick on Jackson Martinez, now his value would be out of our reach! If we got Diame, CF, 2x CD (inc Ash Williams)

  19. This is another case of clubs taking libs after theyve loaned a liverpool player. Whats changed so much they now cant afford the fee agreed at the start of the season? Dont tell me its the olympic stadium thats going to drain their funds. They are getting a fantastic deal there subsidised by the whole country.
And I dont see why Carroll needs to change to fit Liverpools style? It aint that good to be honest. If you take Suarez goals away you are left with a pretty blunt attack. We could do with someone who can score from crosses.
