Sign him: €20m Brazil genius offered to LFC 'likely to leave'. Replace Suarez...?

On transfer deadline last summer, Liverpool were reportedly offered the chance to sign Brazilian attacker Leandro Damiao on loan, with a view to £13m permanent transfer this summer. Sadly, the Reds didn't take the deal (the money probably went on the failed Sahin signing), but the Brazilian has made it clear this week that he still wants a move to Europe.

On August 31, Sami Mokbel, a football reporter for The Daily Mail, claimed that Liverpool were 'weighing up' the opportunity to sign the Internacional striker:

"LFC weighing up Leandro Damiao. Been offered the option of season long loan at cost of £3m.

"Option to sign him on perm for £13m next summer.

"LFC would need to make a quick decision on Damiao, though. Paperwork issues means completing deal would take longer than usual.

"Not saying it's defo going to happen but #lfc have been offered him"

In the same week, Spurs had an £18m bid rejected, and Internacional President Luciano Davi said:

"Tottenham came to us but their offer didn't match our valuation of him. Leandro Damiao is a national team striker and we have to value that. Our intention is that Damiao doesn't leave this year"

Speaking to Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport last night, Damiao - who has 81 goals in 139 games for Internacional - said:

"I dream of playing in Europe. There have been many offers, but then there's never been anything concrete"

Last week, Luis Cesar Souto de Moura, Internacional's director of football, conceded that Damiao is almost certain to leave the club this summer. He told Brazilian publication UOL:

"Leandro Damiao is indeed the player that is most likely to leave Internacional, especially because foreign clubs are interested. Damiao is the player of the moment, everyone is seeing that. He is a great player, he's very special."

Damiao is expected go for around €20m this summer, and if Luis Suarez ends up leaving, his signing would definitely soften the blow.

Liverpool 'weighed up' a move for Damiao once already - should the club go back in for him this summer?

  1. "Replace Suárez...?" Same old same old with you Jaimie. So desperate to see Suárez leave? Why can't we keep Suárez and add more quality?

Or a striker could be signed to play ALONGSIDE Suarez.

  3. You would love Suarez to leave wouldn't you. But Suarez isn't going anywhere this summer so get ready to be sickened once again by Suarez having another brilliant season scoring many goals and lighting up the premier league with his world-class skills.

  4. Get over it. I'm a realist, and Suarez will be gone sooner rather than later. It has nothing to do with my personal view on him. Wake up and read between the lines: he wil be *gone* in a year, if not sooner.

  5. Still trying your hardest to rid us of Suarez than Jaimie?, scared are we?, what we might be capable of, next season?. Keep on wasting your time m8'ty!!!.

  6. How exactly do I have an any influence on whether Suarez stays or goes?! Get real. I have my view, you have yours. Why don't you stop being so intolerant of other peoples' right to an opinion, eh? I've said nothing negative about Suarez in this article, but you and others are such rabid worshippers of the guy that you try and slap down anyone who doesn't conform to the same standards. Get over it already, and as I said, stop being so intolerant.

  7. mate hes just making an observation. I'm sure Jaimie doesnt want him to leave. But lets be fair - hes fair superior to the rest of the team and if someone wants him and makes a good offer (say 50m plus) I think we'd take it if not consider it. all JK was saying is that if that money was spent on Damiao I'm sure we'd all feel slightly better. Which i definitely would. Ive prepared myself for the possibility of him leaving (much to my disliking) - maybe you should as well. Because how would you feel if he did leave and there wasnt a sufficient replacement? You've gotta admit there is a chance he'll leave.

We'd have to pull out some massive negotiations to land Damiao though. Spurs are a world class striker and some reinforcements short of a title shot i reckon. Damiao could definitely be that striker ... gotta be better than Adebayor anyway...

  8. Well, if he's gone in a year, rather than sooner, it'll be later, rather than sooner. Keep him, making a statement that we're not a selling club, helps us attract more talent and we get a real shot at CL next year. This happens and he stays for even longer; therefore, going much later, rather than sooner.

Everyone wants to think they're clever by reading between the lines, but what matters is what actually happens. BTW, I don't worship him, but I do believe that he's an absolutely essential component to qualifying for CL next season.

  9. That;s your wish Jaimie, not ours, prepare yourself, for total disappointment, I wish I was a wishing well, so I can tie you to a bucket. and drown you!.....Oops.

  10. Jaimie,

Does he have enough International Caps etc ? Will he be able to get the Visa?
Will he pass the homegrown and foreign player rules?

Also, we play with a front 3 , meaning it's either going to be one of the following:

    Sturridge, Suarez,Sterling Coutinhio,Downing.
Next season we will have more players being promoted from the academy as Brendan doesn't see to like lending young players out too much.
Expect to see Jordan Ibe,Suso,Jackson promoted to the Squad.
This is not to mention Assaidi and Yesil.
I don't think that your focus on a striker is really the focus off purchases.

We are in desperate need of TWO centre backs and a Goal Keeper.
It's clear that you don't want Suarez at LFC and your entitled to that but until it becomes confirmed I'm not really taking that possibility seriously.

What we do know is that two Centre Backs in Skertel and Coates are not happy and Carragher is retiring.
We have no problem scoring goals but we do have problems keeping them out .
This will and should be the clubs and fans focus.

  11. im suarez biggest fan but in pretty sure he will go, rogers may not want it but i have a feeling fsg have no real affection for him,its strange that a semi hand is being offered to Carroll and we are constantly linked with forwards when the teams priority is a cb with carra going and coates and skirtel out of favour

    ReplyDelete
  12. No one knows iif Suarez will go it's pure speculation thus far.

    ReplyDelete
  13. thats correct ....but its what i feel will unfold

  14. Everyone wants to think they're clever by reading between the lines

Sorry, but that is just nonsense. There's nothing 'clever' about reading between lines, it's simply a case of extracting one's head from the sand seeing the self-evident truth.

Anyone who tries to look at things without ridiculous, over-emotional pro-LFC bias is able to see many things 'between the lines'.

In the past, I've argued so many things about LFC that later came true, and at the time, I was lambasted by fans for doing so. There was no 'clever' insight or anything like that, just a willingness to see the obvious.

If Suarez goes, it doesn't mean LFC is a selling club at all. Man United sold Ronaldo, Beckham et al - are they a selling club? The likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and many other top clubs have sold countless players for big bucks over the years- are they selling clubs? No.

LFC sold Torres and spent £58m on Suarez and Carroll. Is that the behaviour of a selling club? Players come and go, and when Suarez goes, someone else will come in and wow everyone, just like Suarez did when he replaced Torres.

And, it should be remembered that Suarez came in when LFC were not in the Champions League.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What's your point? When does anyone know if any player will definitely leave before it happens? It's not like players admit months before they're going that they want out, is it?

  20. If Coutinho - a Brazilian with infinitely less experience - can get a work permit, I'm sure it won't be a problem for Damiao.

    ReplyDelete
  21. perhaps we should just all come on and stay silent ...although .with some of the stuff posted on here maybe that not a bad idea

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, there are exceptions, but in most cases, players don't announce they're leaving before it happens.

    ReplyDelete
  23. lol Gilstrap fare does I can't argue with that

  24. palletta and a few others spring to mind ...really if they can get in and get a game a columbian drug mule can

    ReplyDelete
  25. Come on, Septimus. I bet you have no problem speculating about players you don't like as much as Suarez. This is what fans do: speculate, and when there are dozens of comments by the player concerned suggesting that he could leave, then the speculation is self-inflicted.

If Suarez doesn't want people to speculate about his future, then he should stop yapping publicly about how he'd be happy to talk with other clubs in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Coutinho was already in the EU as was Suarez we had problems with Lucas and Coates ...wish we had that problem with gonzolez

    ReplyDelete
  27. Reading between the lines, I'd say this is a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  28. there are plenty of mules we and donkeys we just got rid of..one of them pranced around like that donkey on the three mobile adverts

    ReplyDelete
  29. I was responding to your comment, as you said "he will be gone in a year if not sooner". Hardly a definitive prediction! You allow for the possibility of staying a year. I'm simply saying that if he does and we get to the level that we need to, he may no longer see the need to even leave in a year.

I think my logic was simple enough to understand.

In your reply you go on to talk about reading between the lines as if to suggest that it's actually a foregone conclusion that he will go at the end of the season, but don't say so categorically. Instead, you say "if he goes", leaving you wiggle room in case your wrong, as you never actually said it.

So, Jaimie, don't sit on the fence any longer. Just say now whether you believe Suárez will leave his summer or next.

FWIW, if we provide him the success as a club that everyone believes that he craves, why shouldn't he stay until he retires and become a true Liverpool legend? You'd hate that, wouldn't you?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'd hate that if he continued to cheat, punch, stamp etc, not if he continued in his current vein (punch aside) of letting his football skills do the talking.

As for Suarez leaving: I believe there's a 60% chance he'll be gone this summer, and a 100% chance he'll go next summer if LFC don't qualify for the CL.

    ReplyDelete
  31. history shows that as a rule ( there are exceptions ) that players from south America dont stay rooted to a club for to long regardless of success or not

    ReplyDelete
  32. I agree and actually Jaimie as good as Suarez is I wouldn't shed a tear if he left. I just think we should speculate on the central defence it's a shambles ..but don't get me wrong I hear where you coming from at least your consistant

    ReplyDelete

  36. I think we can rely on at least one offer from a CL club, of over £40M, so we can take it that you expect him to leave.

If Torres was worth £50M (debatable, but it's what we realised) and Carroll was worth £35M (no need to debate, yet we paid it), what makes you believe that any sane person would sell Suárez for anything less than £60M?

I seriously wouldn't sell him, even for £100M. That's how important I believe he is to our success over the next few years, and I stress again, I'm no Suárez worshipper and I don't approve of any player cheating. I just feel it's that important to keep him.

Anyway, time will tell who's right.

  37. Comments appear as I submit them, then disappear for maybe 10 minutes or so before reappearing. Maybe because I'm using iPad? Don't know, but it makes an interchange of comments interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Torres/Carroll etc have no bearing on what Suarez will go for. He's worth whatever another club is willing to pay, and if someone offers £45m, I think FSG will take it. Torres wasn't a ticking disciplinary timebomb like Suarez, and that makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, if the club were to accept an offer, then yes, he'll most likely leave, as we'd be telling him that we'd rather have the money. Would love him to refuse in that situation, but I agree that it wouldn't happen.

But, I don't believe that the club is under any pressure to accept offers, or that, at the moment, Suárez wants to leave. Just because he's not a natural born scouser, doesn't mean he can't love the club and want to be loyal. Odd concept in the modern game, but I think that Suárez has ethics that you don't understand, based on his culture and I think he probably loves the club in a similar way to perhaps Alonso.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ethics 'I don't understand'. With respect, get real (!). Suarez is not some complex human being that only a select few are able to fathom. And if you're implying that his willingness to cheat is 'ethical' just because it's deemed to be admirable in Uruguay/South America, then it's you who clearly doesn't understand the concept of ethics.

  45. Moral principles that define a person's conduct. My amateur psychological assessment, FWIW, is that Suárez grows up playing football in the mean streets of his home city and that the morals, (good or bad) that govern his development are based around real world South American society and living conditions.

Before you say "what would I know about this?" My parents and grandparents lived in South America for many years and some of my relatives still do.

It's a rough and often violent continent, with much serious gang mentality and whilst we should all decry the negative aspects of this culture, it exists and people have to survive in it.

As such, a bit of cheating is the least of most people's worries. But this sort of culture often has a code of honour. It would be wrong to call this honour among thieves as this would insult South Americans, but what I'm really saying is that we shouldn't judge people from a different culture too quickly, because they do what they have to in their own environment to survive and thrive.

The problem arises when we try to bring such into our own environment. I believe that Suárez has made a conscious effort to adopt values more acceptable to our society, but we should not expect complete change overnight. Especially when people from our society, such as "diver" Bale set such a bad example.

The positive aspects of Suárez' upbringing/development seem to be a very high work ethic, fierce competitiveness, loyalty to team, team-mates and fans, oh, and no shortage of phenomenal skills. I love Suárez as he is, but if he cuts the cheating a bit more to please you, I'll also be happy.

  46. Hello,I am a Liverpool fan from Brazil and I watch Leandro Damiao very closely here.Damiao is a very good player, but not a direct replacement for Suarez IF he leaves.Damiao is a classic number 9,doesnt have much flexibility on the field, and doesnt have the hability of Suarez, but Leandro can score many goals and is very strong, which is a good thing in the premier league.I think Liverpool should try to buy him, because actually we only have two strikers(borini this season played more as a winger) and like Jaimie said on others posts we need another striker to compete with luis and sturridge.Sorry for my bad english,YNWA from Brazil.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This place is an echo chamber of babbling nitwits led by the nitwit in chief JK. What a laugh! Bunch of serious douchebags verbally vomiting on each other.

    ReplyDelete
  48. We still need another forward. Sturridge looks like injury prone with niggles and he could go into a barren spell without scoring. Competition is a must. The new forward coming in could replace Suarez in the future when he leaves. Eventually he will for sure. But I doubt he would put in a transfer request. There must be continuity. always a player to step in when one leaves.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jaimie, I was wondering if you would give your opinion on how you think Liverpool would do next year if they keep the likes of Suárez and bring in a few, like Damiao and Brazilian cb Dede?

  50. The good times are back8:51 am, April 06, 2013

We have many problems with players who cannot defend. Johnson and Skrtel being the biggest culprits this season. Coates needs to go too.

  51. daily mail is a bastion of dogshite and bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  52. would love it if LFC bought him, but would he choose us instead of other clubs? well maybe now that we have Coutinho and clearly lots of positives regarding the future and our style of football will suit him well, if we can get 10-15m for Carroll we def have the means to go get him.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If LFC keep Suarez, and brought in an attacker of the quality of Damiao that would be great, but the defence really needs work, and unless that issue is sorted this summer, I can't see LFC qualifying for the CL.

Having said that, with the right signings (In order of priority):

    * Two new centre backs (Keep Agger + 2 challengers)
    * One DM (Different style to Lucas)
    * One striker
    * One attacking mid
    * One left/right back

Then I can see LFC challenging for 2/3 spot in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  54. if we could haqve signed him for 13million why did they turn down spurs 18 million what a load of croc

    ReplyDelete
  55. Odd............I find myself in full agreement with this comment Jaimie. Also, for once you don't mention GK and getting rid of Reina. I'm just wondering if you've been hacked somehow? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. jaimie you say suarez is a ticking timebomb fine thats fair enought he may miss a few games with suspensions but he has not missed many with injury out of there first 100 league games for lfc torres suarez who started the most

    ReplyDelete
  57. Nah, just an oversight on my part. New GK too :-)

    ReplyDelete
  58. No football club that wants to win any trophies in world football today should be thinking about selling Suarez. I am very surprised at some Liverpool supporters even thinking of it happening. Liverpool should be signing players of the same quality as Suarez. Pity Comolli has left because he would have put the case across to the Fenway Sports Group. If there is any truth to the rumour surrounding Liverpool and this player, then they should be thinking of signing this player to partner Suarez; and not as a replacement.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Suarez may be less injured, but it's only a matter of time before the next negative incident. We've already had the punch recently, but luckily, that was for Uruguay and not LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It doesn't matter whether fans want Suarez to stay or not. Fans don't have any input into the decision, and the reality is LFC is a business, and FSG will do whatever suits the business. The club's reported another financial loss recently, and wages are still high, so if someone offers £50m for Suarez, the chances are FSG will take it.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i love that guy..BR sign him but he will not be like our super 7.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Careful what you wish for. You might end up with the partnership of Sturridge, Carroll and Borini; and that would be the partnership from hell.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Football has too many variables and factors to rely on to use Torres and Carroll in that manner to gauge what sort of price Suarez will go for. One factor is that Chelsea were a fellow PL club and buying from another club in the same league costs a premium. Carroll was a overhyped British player and we know they always cost a bomb, as well as being sold to another PL club ( i.e., us) which is two premiums added to the price. I don't think any PL clubs will be in for Suarez. I think they'll be in for Falcao, when it comes to big money striker. Add on top of that, there are only 4 players in the last 5 years that have gone for more than £40m. Times are hard financially, especially now. It is not a seller's market at the moment. Only way, imo, to get £50m+ if the Eastern Europeans come in for him. Otherwise, I don't see Bayern or Juve going that mad for Suarez, i.e., £50m+. Maybe PSG could do something, if they can make the numbers work in relation to FFP. With the planning for FFP and the financial climate, it is a tough ask getting £50m+ for a player that only has one great season of form in a top league (PL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A), buyers will most likely be non-PL and currently plays for a club that isn't in CL, i.e., we are lower down the food chain. I'm sane, very sane and considering the current climate, getting £50m for Suarez is very good going.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Actually, we do need a new keeper, but not to replace Reina. Rather to challenge him and provide quality back up.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I see nothing to support your accusation of John being a rabid worshipper of anybody Jamie, perhaps you'll enlighten us as to your reasoning?
As for you saying you've said nothing negative about Suarez... well, it's well documented that you want him sold, so hardly a surprise when people assume that you haven't changed your mind since you wrote 'replace Suarez?' in the headline. Granted it's a question, but then, Jonh Dow put a ? when he asked if you were scared, but you called him intolerant of others' views...

    ReplyDelete
  68. listen jaimie, were in no position to lose our best players. if suarez was added to torres at the time surely we would have been in the CL and maybe by now, had won the league. who knows, but losing your stars and replacing them is not the way forward. suarez has a contract until 2018 and the club will reject every bid under £60M. if the club sold suarez, BR would be absolutely distraught, so would stevie and everyone else at the club. forget his antics, football wise suarez is everything LFC stands for. YNWA, suarez plays for the fans. i hate you jaimie, i swear, you always make things negative.

    ReplyDelete
  69. To compete with Sturridge, why not?

    ReplyDelete
  70. If the FSG want to balance the books, they have to start thinking big. Selling Suarez will not do that. Keeping Suarez and making world class additions - on Suarez and Gerrard's level - to the squard will make the team successful which will inturn in turn balance the books.

    ReplyDelete
  71. In my view Suarez has only caused major problems once, the incident itself was compounded by the club's poor handling of the situation, which is hardly Suarez' fault. he did something he shouldn't, was punished, and repaid the club in the best way possible: by scoring goals and doing his considerable best.
I understand that in your view the negatives outweigh the positives. But I'd wager that if there was a poll asking that very question, that more people would vote to have him than to sell him even if it was not just LFC voters. He hasn't done as much damage as you portray in my opinion. Sure, he's hated by many opposition fans, and coverage of the affair has certainly lost us some admirers who were previously neutral, but consider this: Cantona did worse during his time at Man Utd. The club made him captain when he returned ( which is what Kenny should have done if he wanted to make a point of his support instead of those silly t shirts). And Man Utd went on and on winning when he returned. I personally thought he should have been kicked out of the club and even out of football, but following the ban, he got his head down and worked to help the club. Yes, he damaged the brand and reputation. But not irrepairably so.
Suarez' plus side far outweighs the bad imo. Some of the things you have highlighted have betrayed your bias in that you never wanted him in the first place and you seemingly never will whatever he does or however well he behaves.
I predict another 'you are blinded by loyalty/pro LFC bias/hero worship/ part of a cult/apologist' type reply.
But I'm not the one trying to say 'I told you so'....
