Dutch striker Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has been linked with Liverpool many times over the last few years, and the most recent link came in February, with Sky Sports reporting that the Reds had stepped up their interest in pursuing a potential deal for the Dutchman. Alas, the 24-year old has now agreed to sign for Norwich City, and Reds legend Mark Lawrenson believes it's a great move for the club.
Roy Hodgson tried to sign Van Wolfswinkel in 2010, and since then, he's been linked with a move to Anfield in practically every transfer window.
Speaking to the BBC last week, Lawro said:
"Signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon is a shrewd move by the Canaries. He will improve them for next season.
"It also puts one or two of their front players under a bit of pressure to finish this season strongly, which will obviously help them get over the line in terms of safety"
In March, Norwich announced that they'd agreed a €10m deal with Van Wolfswinkel, who is due to join the club on July 1st on a four year deal.
Norwich boss Chris Hughton is certainly excited about the Dutchman's arrival. In March, he told reporters:
"It's a very exciting one for us. He [Van Wolfswinkel] has a wonderful goals record. He is a player that wants to get into the box and because of his age, there's still improvement in him. A real exciting prospect for us.
Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are in the midst of a combined goal drought at the moment, which highlights Liverpool's need for more attacking options, something Brendan Rodgers admitted again over the weekend.
With that in mind, have Liverpool missed out here? In two seasons at Sporting Lisbon, the Dutchman has grabbed 43 goals in 83 games, which equates 1 goal every two games.
Should Liverpool have pursued Van Wolfswinkel...?

A Disqus glitch wiped out a couple of comments from this thread. Apologies for that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think BR was interested. If he was that good why didn't Arsenal, Manure, Everton or Spurs make a play for him? Let's be honest and with all due respect why pick Norwich?
ReplyDeleteHe probably sees it as a stepping stone to a bigger Prem club. That's what I'd do: join a lesser Prem club, prove myself, and then move a year or two later, hopefully to one of the top six. I'm sure that's what Loic Remy had in mind when he joined QPR; when they get relegated, he'll go to a bigger club.
ReplyDeleteThere was a lot of talk of him coming until he dislocated his shoulder against us if I remember correctly. He seems a great prospect and has a good goals to game ratio. Plus he has an incredible name!
ReplyDeleteLook at Michu at Swansea, or even Suarez at Ajax. Sometimes these players are there for the taking. But with modern fans it is a huge risk if it doesn't work out.
ReplyDeletenorwich probably out bid lfc and offered better wages lol it could be true
ReplyDeleteYour petty negativity shows no bounds
ReplyDeletewhats negotive about it spurs did us twice southampton twice why not norwich ,the facts are fsg will not pay one penny more on transfer fees than they think is the correct amount ,even if it under values the player massively and the wage structure is well documented so if other clubs are going to offer bigger transfer fees and bigger wages we better get used to losing out on players ,its not as if we have anything on the pitch to offer no european football next season, rodgers as seen to that, since kenny left we have not signed one player which any other club wanted
ReplyDeleteWOW just WOW....FSG have done their fair share of overplaying for dirt players havent they? On massive wages too...I call that learning from their mistakes,And actually you're wrong It was spurs who enabled us to sign Allen due to the contract allowing us to get involved if another club was interested,Ajax wanted Assaidi,Southampton wanted Coutinho, want me to continue? As Someone said previously facts that suit you exist the ones that dont are lies/Speculation/etc etc
ReplyDeleteif he chooses to go to Norwich,or Liverpool have lost interest so what! i am only interested in players that want to play for the club, not the money, or the chance to go to someone bigger in a couple of seasons, why did he choose Sporting?couldn't have been money could it?
ReplyDeleteOnly slightly bigger though :-)
ReplyDeleteIt did surprise me when I heard they signed him. Sporting must be pretty desperate to let him go for the reported fee. Kudos to Norwich for moving so quickly though. If he has one good season in the PL then expect the "big" clubs to staring rolling in the offers.
ReplyDeletejaimie the new disqus is aweful i have to reload the page several times to see comments, and i,am a disqus member ,god help those who are not,are you still looking for other options
ReplyDeletewhen i said other clubs i meant big clubs but i take your point southampton and ajax are our level now
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree, but they've forced it on everyone so I can't change it. That thing where you have to reload the page is only a temporary glitch, apparently. If you're using internet explorer, I'd recommend ditching it and using Chrome/Firefox instead. They're infinitely better browsers anyway, but they're good for Disqus. I'm still looking at other options, but transferring 200,000 comments and preserving accounts etc is a bit of a nightmare (!)
ReplyDeletei,am using chrome, good look shifting the 200,000 comments lol hope it is temporary glitch:-)
ReplyDeleteOver rated. Not that we havent over spent on players in the last 24 months. Hopefully thouhgh FSG and under Rodgers (for now) going forward will spend more wisely.
