LFC's Biggest Mistakes: No 1 - Houllier robs fans of the game of the century

On the 9th April 2002, a particularly catastrophic tactical decision by Gerard Houllier robbed Liverpool FC of the chance to participate in what would undoubtedly have been one of the games of the century.

On the night in question, Liverpool faced Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League quarter-final second leg. Awaiting the winners was a mouth-watering, once in a lifetime semi-final tie against...Manchester United.

Liverpool-United in a CL semi-final? It’s the stuff of dreams, especially since both teams had never before crossed swords in European competition.

With a 1-0 aggregate advantage from the first leg at Anfield, I had no doubt Liverpool would beat Leverkusen, and given the club’s record v United that season (3-1 win at Anfield and 1-0 win at Old Trafford) the odds of victory were most definitely in Liverpool's favour.

Gerard Houllier sent out a strong team that included the likes of Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher, but within 15 minutes, Leverkusen had taken the lead with a Michael Ballack special.

With the aggregate score at 1-1, things were tense; Michael Owen squandered chance after chance and Emile Heskey limped off injured, allowing Finnish maestro Jari Litmanen to enter the fray.

Then, just before the interval, Abel Xavier headed-in a precious away goal from a Danny Murphy cross. 2-1 on aggregate with the advantage of an away goal. Job done, right?

Wrong.

In the 61st minute, Houllier made a decision that to this day I cannot understand: He replaced Dietmar Hamann with Vladimir Smicer.

Before this catastrophic decision, Liverpool had kept Leverkusen at bay, thanks mostly to Hamann’s outstanding defensive work. Clearly, the right move here was to protect the lead and preserve the prospect of dream date with Man United in the semi-final. That possibility was, however, destroyed as soon as Smicer set foot on the pitch.

Within two minutes of the substitution, Michael Ballack scored again to bring the tie level on aggregate. A brilliant solo goal by the Jari Litmanen swung the game back in Liverpool’s favour, but by this time, Leverkusen were growing in confidence, and anyone who watched the game will remember the growing sense of impending dread.

Without Hamann’s physical presence, positioning and organisation, Leverkusen poured forward, completely bypassing Liverpool’s now non-existent (and lightweight) midfield and scored a further two goals, giving them a 4-3 aggregate victory.

The dream was dead. Liverpool were out of the competition and the fans were cruelly robbed of the game of the century.

Having watched the game many times, it is crystal clear that the turning point was the substitution. Indeed, I have absolutely no doubt that if Hamann had stayed on the pitch, Liverpool would’ve beaten Leverkusen.

What was Houllier thinking?! What possible tactical advantage was gained by removing one of Liverpool’s most effective players and replacing him with one of the club’s most inconsistent, lightweight performers?

Houllier’s disastrous decision not only cost us the sublime satisfaction of knocking United out of the European Cup, it arguably cost us another European trophy. With Zinedine Zidane in his prime, Real Madrid would’ve been a tough prospect in the final, but they were definitely beatable.

Due to Houllier’s gargantuan blunder, it was sadly not to be. The players picked themselves up and went on to finish second in the league that year, but for me, the Leverkusen disappointment but a dampener on the whole season.

Opportunities to face United in a CL semi-final (or Final for that matter) don’t come around that often. Indeed, in the previous 47 years of the competition, it didn’t happen once.

Hopefully, Liverpool fans won’t have to wait another 47 years before we get to experience the pleasure of knocking Man United out of the Champions League.

Of course, just being IN the damn competition would do for now (!)

  2. I think that Rodgers wont even be able to reach such a positin in CL - at least for one more season.

look where we reached with Gerard Houllier and Rafael Benitez .
Houllier gave us Gerrard in the midfield and until now, Steven Gerrard is considered as one of the best in that position in the world even when Ballack and Co. dont make the headlines in that sense anymore.
Houllier and Rafa brought in lots of good players who have had almost IMMEDIATE POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR RESULTS.

Had he been given the necessary financial backing at that time, SAF wont be about to accumulate an additional PL Titles at our expense today.

The performance against reading yesterday was so appalling and we can see there the fingerprints of a coach without any experience at the head of a great club.

Anyway, do the US Owners officially allows us the fans to have a say in the club management?

If so, then I think it's high time we bring in Rafa because otherxise our next season will be worst than this one.

Jaimie can we have a vote poll for the return of RAFA?

Houllier was never a tactician!.He used to stand by the touch line chewing his fingernails - not knowing what to do !

  4. do we fan still want Brendan Rodgers for next season? Do we have a say in the descision of management for the US owners?

  7. I well remember the numbing feeling of defeat that night - it was terrible decision, nearly as bad as his decision to turn down signing Anelka for Diouf. But then he didn't have a clue about buying strikers...

  11. Shocking really when you think about how much potential this Club has & that the CL now seems like a distant memory let alone the fact that we now won't have any European football at all next season.....

Say what you will about the Europa but for me it was something to look forward to in terms of more opportunities to see us play... & IMO a good way to utilise the squad, giving peripheral players a chance to prove their worth etc, yes i undersatand the argument that we *might* be be better of without it next season which has been an ongoing debate since we started to lose our way....

I think we have to deal with the reality of the situation we are in, those people defending BR have to realize that it might well boil down to a simple choice at the end of the season, i.e. either we sack Rodgers....or offload the likes of Suarez Reina Agger & possibly 1 or 2 others who simply won't want to hang around any longer in the hope that we will make it into the top4 next season....

Whilst i can truly sympathise with BR in some respects i.e. games where we played quite well at times but still didn't take away the points due to a lack of clinical finishing etc or shaky defending the fact remains that their is little proof that this current team under Rodgers (one with enough quality already to compete with the top4 IMO) will/can actually put a consistent run of games together whereby we develop the momentum that is needed to compete with the better sides in the PL.

For whatever reason it is not working, more money has been spent by the owners & we have little to show for it, i cannot with any conviction foresee us under BR being anything other than a top 6/7 side & tbh i see things getting worse not better esp if we take into account how demotivated many of our players have looked this season....

It is undeniable that a change has to come, something needs to change....., of course in an ideal world Rodgers should be allowed to stay on for another season & in the same manner Kenny shouldn't have been sacked...but we as a fanbase need to be honest with ourselves, given the choice of losing Suarez etc....this summer....or losing BR....

So.....what will it be....? What would the majority of the fans want to see happen in the summer...? Naturally Suarez & co will not come out & say it how it is....but we all know that to keep players like that at the Club they need to a manager who can inspire them to raise their game etc, in short i think we will need a top flight manager, no more messing around with experiments that have wielded fcuk all resultswise other than to see us out of Europe & trailing way behind the top4 with little sign of a genuine a consistent improvement....

Even if it meant Rafa returning which in an ideal world shouldn't happen he would at least move us on from the doldrums that we are now in, with a a few tweaks to this team i don't doubt that under him we would definitely be challenging the top4 next season esp if ALL our better players decide to stay at the Club, i don't like to have to admit it but thats how i see it, i wasn't a big fan of Rafa, far from it & like Jamie felt that the time was right for him to go BUT if im honest i know we would improve if he came back & if we didn't it would once & for all dispel the argument that his time at the Club was cut short by a series of events beyond his control.

However which way we look at it, a change has to come, this shambles cannot be allowed to continue into next season, it could set us back a long way if a few of our better players decide that the Club/Owners etc does not fit with their personal ambitions and dreams of playing on a stage that they deserve to play on...i.e. Champions of Europe.....

    ReplyDelete
  12. Clearly there are some fans who want to see BR continue next season, but for me the problems we have will NOT be resolved if Rodgers is still the manager next season, i just don't see it happening at all, so in that respect i personally want to see a change.

I have ranted on for long enough re certain players under-performing etc, but we cannot off load all those players without the fan-base finally blowing a 50,000amp fuse esp if BR is kept on.....

So yes the fan-base does have a say, IMO it is not a matter of who is to blame anymore i.e. the players or BR... it is now a question of how to somehow keep our better players from heading elsewhere...

It was the same with Roy & Kenny....the fan-base had its say and i am sure FSG will be listening re BR also....

I can't see them being too pleased about the returns of their investment thus far, thats for sure...

  13. the biggest problem rogers has is hes not as smart as he thinks he is....he genuinely thinks he id gods gift to football...all i see is a low level manager who copies other manager ideas while trying to write them off as his own ..i see a manager who panders to some players while bullying others...i see a manger who says one thing then does another.....i see a manager who is sending us into mediocrity

  15. Correction.

Number 1: Selling club to H&G
Number 2: Sacking Rafa for Hodgson (how on earth did that happen?)
Number 3: KD second time round
Number 4: Replacing one poor manager with a untested one in BR
Number 5: (future guess) repeating steps 2 to 4 just with different names, each one slightly worse than the one before. When finished repeat again as this should fill the next 10 years for us.

  16. Thing with Rafa is I would rather just remember him as he was and with the good memories he left us. Since us he hasn`t done well anywhere and if he came back I think there is a higher chance he would not do so well. Right now I can always love Rafa for the amazing CL nights and nearly winning the league, if he comes back I might remember his bad traits which I have nicely forgotton.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My honest view on Rodgers is he is a great coach but bad manager. Clearly he has some nice footballing ideas. A nice style to his play, but lacks the smartness a manager needs in how to promote the club and what to say when to win the mental game no just with your own players but against the teams you are playing. Just look at Rafa recently. He already has come out with how he will return to Liverpool, putting pressure on Br. Now after has said he meant to live here but lets be honest we all know its not by chance Chelsea play us soon and Chelsea need that win to have any chance of 4th this year. BR reacted over it, and already Rafa has won the mental game for that match.

  18. On the one hand i agree with your sentiment re Rafa, in fact i have critiqued him on this very site & sworn i would hang up my supporting boots if he came back, but......looking at the current situation honestly....i have to concede that we would definitely improve if he (Rafa) was given a chance by FSG to return to Anfield.

Sometimes in life as in football you have to drop personal dislikes re certain "characters" esp managers, Mourinho is a case in point, i hated him at Chelsea because of his apparent ego and blatant cockiness, but look at him now.....at Real Madrid ( a club which Rafa was surely eyed up by after our CL win and his record in Europe, plus our title challenge which nearly succeeded in knocking United off their perch......

I still don't like Mourinho all that much & im not overly keen on Rafa but the one thing they both have in common is that they have worked out a system be it psycholigical or purely tactical which works by hammering the opponents weaknesses, call it mind games or whatever you like but it definitely works.....like it or not, might not be for the football purists (like i was..) but in a fast moving results based do or die world of money mad modern football it can prove the difference between staying competitive with the top flight or sinking into mediocrity....

If at the end of the season the fans are calling for Rafa i say let him come back, let him have a season in charge & we'll see if he can get this current shower playing & winning on a more consistent basis, if he fails then we know to look at elsewhere but i really don't think he would fail if im truly honest, who hasn't dreamed of a team with Suarez and Torres up front.....?

How many LFC fans would object to seeing Rafa return with Torres for instance....? Strictly as a fan of football i know i would....not that its going to happen or is distinctly possible even, but still......

    ReplyDelete
  19. there one man for sure, to whom Fergusson is very allergic : RAFA because he knows that this man nearly shattered his dream in 2008 and he is fully aware that if this guy comes back to lfc thenhis obssession to knock us off our perch(he hasnt yet been able to emulate us in cl - in fact this is why he is not retiring) will only turn out to be a mirage.

he is not afraid at all of BR.

COME ON FENWAY BRING US BACK RAFA AND GIVE HIM THE BACKING AND YOU'L SEE!!!!!
LETS WELCOME RAFA WHEN HE COMES BACK TO ANFIELD WITH CHELSEA! IF ITS TRUE THAT WE HAVE A SAY ON THE CHOICE OF MANAGERS LETS RAIE OUR VOICE SO THAT THE FENWAY GROUP CAN WITNESS OUR FAITH AND HEAR OUR CONVICTION. AFTER ALL WE HVE BEEN WAITING FOR TOO LONG NOW.

  21. Get a grip, do really want me to list the failures Rafa signed, and Mash and Alonso, Finnan, Arbeloa, he dumped. Benitez never had it, and never will, I'd even prefer Rodgers to him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow! Is all I can say... First of all Rafa didn't dump any players that were successful. A lot of these players left on their own accord to bigger and better things when they realised that H&G were sinking the ship.

BR has a lot to do to prove himself and shouldn't
be spoken in the same breath with a manager or managers that have proved it at the highest level i.e Champions League, FA Cup, League titles and even the Top 4.

  23. I have had a real think about our biggest mistake in the last 10 yrs and I think it all started with the sacking of Benitez. I agree that some people wanted him to go and to be fair his last season was a shocker so you could not put a real argument across if the new owners went and brought in a top class manager, but when they signed Hodgson, I think the majority thought,'WHAT THE HELL'

Once we sacked Hodgson (thank god) we pulled KD off a cruise ship and begged him to come back, I remember the poll (96%) approved. He instantly made the difference and gave us the feel good factor. His first full season was a roller coaster. some highs (cups, semi final against everton, winning against top sides) and some lows (Inconsistency in the league due to poor finishing and not killing off games). Then came the second biggest mistake, the board did not give KD time to get it right and sacked him due to him not getting 4th. To be fair if KD does not deserve time, then no one deserves it and this will be the mind set for many when a new manager is appointed.

Before the season started you had split fans, some wanting rafa back, some saying KD should of been given time and others saying wee need a full change and a top manager to come in. the board went with untested but a manager with potential. Everyone seemed to say 'ok, if he gets us back up the league and does better than KD then fine'.

At the start of his pre season and first competitive match he was in some way trying to dismantle KD's reign and did not play most of KD's signings or shipped them out, this led to the worst start to a campaign for 100 yrs, From here progress was a must as we could not do any worse. He then gave KD's signings an olive branch and to be fair they have out performed his own signings. this season we have been out of the league by September out of the cups early and nothing to play for, for months and understandably rumblings are afoot for a change of management and to be fair BR has had a season on par with other sack able seasons and the arguments for his sacking are justifiable when you think that others did not get time so why should he.

In conclusion, the board has either sacked managers and replaced them with poor managers or then sacked a manager to early and not give him time. what this has done is set a trend and divided fans for whoever takes over and their is now an anxiety that we must win and get top 4. In my mind the only way to fix the biggest mistakes the club have made is by the following:

    1. Either replace BR with a top manager and not benitez (as this would cause further disruption next year if he does not get 4th) with a manger in the mold of Hiddink, klopp, mourinho or ancelotti.

    2. If we cant replace BR with a manager of this level then he should be allowed to stay, replacing him with a similar inexperienced manager will only cause more resentment and will provide judgement from fans but if he does stay the pressure is definitely on, next season he will need to provide results from the word go and make this year look like the transitional year we have had for the past 3.

  24. Yes! Finally found a fans forum that doesnt kiss BR ass!! I wish he would leave Anfield in the summer and let Rafa come back!!! IN RAFA I TRUST - JFT 96!!!!

  25. I think even Rafa's biggest detractors would prefer to see him back at the Club.

It depends how patient the fans are but even Rodgers deserves more than a season to prove himself. Only problem with this is we will cement our mid table positioning further. We only seem to have one plan/tactic against all teams and praise the players even after drawing against bottom feeders.

Rafa may have had questionable decisions the average supporter couldn't understand but nothing was as bad as playin an injured, out of form Allen over a fit Henderson.

As much as I would love to have a manager back who has the balls to lay into Ferguson and drop Gerrard or any other high profile player if they are out of form it probably won't happen.

FSG will only bring in yes men like Rodgers who will do as he is told and not someone on merit that can divide opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In defence to Rafa at Inter and Chelsea he can't create miracles in one season or even half a season.

His heart is not in it at Chelsea as well. Fans are against him, players know he is leaving after this season. Yet he is doing his job as a professional obviously.

Mourinho on the other hand seems to time his employment timing to perfection.

In my opinion the Chelsea and Liverpool jobs are a poisoned chalice.
So much expectation when things need an overhaul and a significant amount of investment just to reach the heights of a few seasons ago.

    I agree though...what if?

What if Luis Garcia's goal was ruled out (the ball did not go over the line)...what effect would it have on the rest of Benitez's era?

  31. Good point. If LFC didn't win the CL in 2005, I think Benitez would've left a lot sooner.

  32. IN REPLY TO FdotM on Luis Garcia's goal

NOT A CHOUYA OF EFFECT; HAD THEY RULED OUT LUIS GARCIA'S goal, something else would have happened that day (positive for us I mean) because Luis' goal was just a reflection of the momentum and tempo of our play, it was just hell to the blues on that day. and you know what! just recall, on that day, once we scored, we closed the doors in defence , there was no goal from the blues.

NOW IMAGINE BR's ERA!!!! EVERY TIME WE SCORE, WE ARE TENSE AND AWAITING FOR THE OTHER TEAM TO STEAM ON AND SCORE BACT!!!!

WE WOULD HAVE COUNTED MINUTES BEFORE LAMPARD AND CO ASSAULTED OUR SIDE AND EQUALISE AND DEFEAT US.

CONTRASTED ANALOGY : LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO US WHEN WE LED CITY 2-1 AT HOME, LAST YEAR !!!!! TEVEZ CAME IN AND EQUALISED by EXPLOITING OUR LEARNING PHASE OF KEEPING THE BALL FOR TIKI TAKA TYPE OF PLAY.

THE LFC OF THAT TIME - THE RAFAERA (lets put it like that) WAS JUST INSPIRED BY ONE OF THE FINEST TACTICIAN AND COACH NOT SIMPLY A COACH OBSESSED BY 'soi disant nice football only'; HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE HEARD FERGUSSSON'S TEAM PLAYED UGLY AND WON?????? EVEN NOW THEY WERE RECENTLY THRASHED BY CITY AT HOME AND YET ABOUT TO WIN PL!!!!!

REMEMBER also WHAT WE DID TO JUVENTUS!!!!!! WE WERE ALWAYS ABLE TO CLING TO AN ADVANTAGE ON THE SCORE HOWEVER MEAGER IT WAS - THAT WAS THE RAFALUTION!

DONT FORGET THE FINAL AGAINST MILAN, JERZY WENT TO FETCH THE BALL THRICE IN FIRST 45 MINUTES ON THAT DAY(mancs were jubilating GAME OVER FOR US) !!!! THEN EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARDS WHEN 'YOU'l NEVER WALK ALONE' COMMENCER A RETENTIR DANS LE STADE A ISTANBUL

IT's NOT 'UNE CULTE DE LA PERSONALITE' IT's simply a fact that this man -RAFA- did give us hope to clinch the title !!!!! and he brought us very close to it!!!!

Incidentally, RM have'n't won as many European championship as LFC and AC MILAN have since the fifties !!! FACT!).
And the same competition prior to that, that they won, contained as little as 'TWO' clubs !!!

Alonso was partly to blame himself!

In my belief Finnan's departure was a mistake.

But overall,in regard to Benitez --- he has undoughtedly been LFC's best manager since Bob Paisley, and I amongst 70% of LFC supporters would ave him back 'TOMORROW'.

Contrary to the belief of some supporters Rafa's teams scored a good amount of goals! Over a hundred in one particular season. And also hammered Real Madrid,Man.U, plus other top teams. I really do hope that FSG are listening to the things he has been saying over the last week !!!
