With five goals and two assists in his first nine games, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has hit the ground running at Anfield, and Reds legend Robbie Fowler is convinced that the 23-year old will go on to be a great asset for his old club.
In a recent interview, Fowler hailed Sturridge's impact, but also admitted that he'd had worries about Sturridge's attitude. He told LFC.com:
"He [Sturridge] has been brilliant. At Man City, he was as good as any young player I’d ever seen.
"He moved to lots of different clubs, and I was a bit worried about him, and questioned his attitude, but since he’s been at Anfield, his attitude has been first class, and I think he’s been a revelation for Liverpool"
This issue about Sturridge's alleged 'attitude' problem is becoming a bit of a cliche. As far as I can see, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest he had any kind of problem, and (IMO) it's all based on inaccurate inference and supposition.
If a player moves to a few different clubs when he's young, why does that mean he has an attitude problem? That makes no sense. In Sturridge's case, he wanted first team football so he moved around. What's so wrong with that?
Surely being happy to just lounge on the bench and collect a salary is more of an indicator of an attitude problem? Wanting to move clubs to get first team football shows drive, desire and determination.
Sturridge - who cost the Reds £12m (€14m) has been a breath of fresh air since arriving at Anfield, but a revelation? That's a slight exaggeration. One thing that concerns me is Sturridge's knack of picking up injuries.
Since arriving at Liverpool, Sturridge has had two spells on the sidelines already, and he's picked up another injury this week with England, which means he's a doubt for tonight's game with San Marino.
Sturridge also missed England's recent game against Brazil through injury. The striker himself admits it's a problem, and earlier this week, he told LFC.com:
"I'd have his [Suarez's] fitness. He must be a man of steel or something. He gets so many kicks and he doesn't seem to feel it, whereas I get a few niggles here and there and it's very frustrating because it kills the momentum I'm having."
Maybe it's just an unlucky phase, but let's hope it doesn't develop into a persistent problem. Sturridge's injury woes just underline once again the importance of having at least three top quality strikers in the squad, and buying another striker should (IMO) be a priority for Liverpool this summer.

I have always been a fan of him.
ReplyDeleteI dont get the attitude thing either. He seems fine to me, and as long as he can keep playing as well as he can, then im happy.
he needs to be a team player,if he his not scoring he dosen,t celebrate the goals, also needs to learn to pass a ball downing was sreaming for the lay off last week but sturridge went for glory yet again from a stupid situation he was never going to score, i have serious doubts about his attitude time will tell
ReplyDeleteYes, and Luis Suarez never goes it alone, does he? Suarez would never dream of not passing to a team-mate if he sensed a scoring opportunity. You are being completely unfair here. 'Serious doubts about his attitude' because he didn't pass to Downing, and didn't celebrate with wild abandon when someone scored? Clearly, you have some kind of grudge against Sturridge (IMO), as that's not a reasonable conclusion to draw from those actions.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Jaimie. I have thought that Sturridge's build up play and passing have been great. He appears to have a good understanding of where his team mates are and has picked out good passes on numerous occasions. I heard that he was selfish before he joined, but I haven't seen this at all.
ReplyDeleteEvery time his name is mentioned on this sight, JC jumps up and down going on about him not celebrating when so one else scores.
I doubt we will sign another striker if we have Sturridge, Suarez and Borini because the fourth striker that is signed wouldn't get many games at all, so I don't think it would be a 'top quality' striker brought in.
ReplyDeleteI think it's better anyways. There is way too much emphasis on attacking under BR. Defensive and midfield stability should be a priority. Using 4-3-3 we got on a good run and dominated most games, but to accommodate more attacking players we switched to 4-2-3-1 and we haven't been able to dominate in the same way as before. Spurs walked all over us, likewise Southampton.
Sturridge has started well but at times he can be very average. Even if hes fit I'd have him come on as a sub for now.
We don't need another striker. If or when Sturridge cannot play Suarez is more than capable of playing up front on his own. We just need the players behind him to accomodate that. I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record but Henrikh Mkhitaryan should be our number one priority this summer. I just doubt anyone at Anfield even knows he exists.
ReplyDeleteHeaven forbib, a striker wanting to score goals.
ReplyDeleteand judging from Downings record, I would feel less confident if he had the ball.
off topic jk what sort of response what that from those clowns from the fa over the horror tackle by macmanaman last weekend .what sort of message does that send out. a total disgrace. and it doesnt get any better now with the news that greg dyke is to take over as chairman of the FA .the man was a director of manure during the 90s so thats us f"cked! thats just what the game needs a mate of whiskey breath running football in this country a f"ckin disgrace
ReplyDeletei have no grudge against him imo he is selfish and not a team player end off,and re the downing pass its what a team player would have done were as a glory hunter would only think about himself
ReplyDeletelook m8 he celebrates when he scores if someone else scores he walks off with a smacked ass,and as for build up play and team awareness its been poor to say the least the last two games hes missed more chances than he has scored
ReplyDeleteIn the last two games, when we haven't dominated possession, he hasn't seen much of the ball at all. Maybe he has been isolated as the front man, and with Luis picking the ball up a lot and running and shooting, the service to Danny has been poor. Hopefully its a symptom of our poor performances, but the link up between the 2 strikers has been non existent.
ReplyDeleteSturridge got the ball in the box twice vs Soton, and both times he shot straight into the defender in front of him, wasting any chance. I said he would be a good signing in December, so clearly dont have any grudge against him, im just saying what I see. He was absolutely superb against City, when suarez played poorly. We only need one of them to have a good game and we can win.
jaimie and if i have a grudge against sturridge in your opinion what the f"ck do you have against suarez ,i,ve pointed out sturridges bad point to you numerous times (the diving) only to be frettened with a ban ,well m8 its true he as dived numerous times but seen as hes your golden boy were not supposed to talk about is bad points imo sturridge has been vastly overated by a lot of lfc fans and is average at the moment hopefully he can turn into another rushie as so many fans think he is all ready
ReplyDeletetommy why do you have to justify the fact that sturridge,as been piss poor the last two matches is it because you do not want to seem to have some grudge against him or worse,m8 your right hes been poor the last two games you do not have to justify your point of view:-)
ReplyDeleteI don't get this attitude thing either?!?
ReplyDeleteHe DOES congratulate others it's just that he doesn't dance when others score, which is fair enough. JK could you clear this myth up cos I've definitely seen him congratulate others!
Is he known to come in overweight? NO, but Fowler & Carroll definitely had times of looking portly. Must indicate a degree of discipline, especially as pace is a big part of his game.
Do you hear of problems in nightclubs or drinking? NO but same cannot be said of Carroll or even our beloved Gerrard!
Has previous managers criticised his attitude? NO, in fact Mancini lamented the decision to let him go, Coyle endorsed him as a very good professional, Di Matteo certainly played him more & never questioned his attitude.
Hodgson sees him being part of England's future.
This attitude malarkey seems to be baseless & maybe part of some subconscious prejudice. Now I can't predict the future & cannot say he's perfect but until there is hard facts lets leave the speculation alone!
Because I always moan at people for criticising their own players and now I'm doing it! Maybe its just because I cant believe i am agreeing with you haha :) But i generally like to balance my arguments: present both sides so people can make their own conclusion. In contrast you have an opinion and stick to it, which is also commendable.
ReplyDeleteon Sturridge: when Suarez scored vs Swansea Danny still looked annoyed when it went in, which I didn't like. And he annoyed me vs Southampton, should have kept his head up. However it is natural to be selfish when starved of any possession.
But in all honesty any conclusions on the lad are extremely premature. He's had good games he's, had bad games. He has already had more of an effect on games than Borini, as he should have considering his far greater Premiership experience.
Suarez went six games without scoring recently. Did you describe him as 'piss poor'? I doubt it. Sturridge has only gone two games without scoring, so why does he deserve that label?
ReplyDeleteGolden boy? Nonsense. I don't think Sturridge has deliberately dived. Deal with it. Re Suarez - I have a grudge against cheating, and behaviour that sullies the reputation of LFC, so when Suarez behaves in a way that brings negative headlines on LFC, I criticise him for it. It's the behaviour, not the person. It's nothing personal. Every criticism I've ever made of Suarez is 100% related to what he does on the field.
ReplyDeletesome people grow up, whats all the fuss about, hopefully he has. hes always got injured easily that's the only worry. still young and developing
ReplyDeleteyou mention he doesnt celebrate when the team scores well if you look at the tottenham game and other games he has celebrated exactly your face is now looking like a "smacked ass"
ReplyDeletebecause hes piss poor imo thats why ,each to there own we will see whos right in time
ReplyDeletelol ;-)
ReplyDeleteyeah, we're gonna have to disagree... again. I think he has looked like a team player from the start. You have made so many comments in the negative about him since he started that it obvious that you have it in for him for some reason. I dont think it would matter what he did, you would have something negative to say, in fact since I have been reading this blog, I reckon I have read one positive post from you from about 1000 posts.
ReplyDeleteFirst, it was 'dose' for 'does'. Now, it is 'dosen,t'. What would you think of next? I truly take my briefs off for you, Jason 'Dose' Carr.
ReplyDeletewho are you to criticise suarez jaimie? whether cheating or f'ucking some girl at the park, suarez does way more for LFC than you do. all you do is create problems amongst fans and players putting naughty thoughts into peoples heads instead of encouraging and praising like LFC tv. sometimes i think you should just close down this site and keep your mouth shut
ReplyDeletesimple m8 do not read my posts
ReplyDeleteat least it as changed whilst you have remained an assh0le
ReplyDeletesturridge is a decent back up player who will blow hot and cold. he was woeful in his last game, and thats the sturridge we saw so often at chelsea.
ReplyDeletewe need someone else , better than him to play every week imo.
No probs, don't comment on my posts and I wont have to read them.
ReplyDeletethe attitude he's referring to is that of pushing yourself to the max in training everyday and trying to constantly improve. perhaps sturridge was trying to rely on his natural ability too much and not working hard enough in training hence not playing regularly.
ReplyDeletei think RF worried wether he had attitude to make the best of his ability. in the same way he probably worried about that young city player who had loads of talent but not the right attitude to make it on the big stage michael johnson
i only comment when you reply to me m8;-)
ReplyDeletetotally agree m8 he his a back up player but as things stand at lfc hes the main man shows how far we have fallen behind
ReplyDeletehe is not the type of players thats likely to make luis want to stay.
ReplyDeletewe have one more season to get back into the CL, or else luis is off. we need to buy genuine world class , young or older, to have a chance.
in reality, sturridge is a 6/8m player for me MAXIMUM.
me two he,s not going to take us onto the next stage,he may improve but at the moment he should be a squad player,i also think suarez is less affective when sturridge plays as suarez gets pushed out wide,if suarez leaves this summer before we sign a world class player i do not think we will be able to attract that kind of player again under rodgers and fsg
