Confirmed: €14m star will 'discuss' LFC future this summer. Is this the end...?

In his column for the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday, Liverpool legend John Aldridge argued that Martin Skrtel had 'failed to grasp his last chance for Liverpool FC', and the Slovakian's poor performance against Southampton last weekend, it's hard to argue with Aldo's assessment. Reports this week suggest that Arsenal have joined the race for the struggling defender, and with speculation swirling, Skrtel's Agent has made a statement about his client's future.

In an interview with hnonline.sk today, Karol Csonto - Skrtel's agent - responded to rumours about the defender's future. He said:

"I don't read things like this, because such news I consider just speculation.

"Martin still has a valid contract with Liverpool, and we are not going to discuss his future in the course of the season.

"However, during the summer we will discuss it with Liverpool to see what their intentions are, and we will act accordingly"

In his column, Aldo blasted Skrtel's performance against Southampton, arguing that he had a 'nightmare' against the Saints, adding:

"Maybe he still feels aggrieved about being dropped in the first place but you can’t mope around. He just wasn’t at the races. Skrtel should have been desperate to play well and prove a point but surely he will be back on the bench for the next game".

According to The Mirror this week:

"Martin Skrtel [is] at the top of his [Wenger's] list. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will allow Skrtel, who is out of favour at Anfield, to leave for around £13m. The Gunners will face competition for Skrtel from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg"

With speculation over the future of Luis Suarez also intensifying, this summer promises to be extremely interesting on the transfer front.

  1. the only defender who hasnt been granted the opportunity to prove himself if coates. anyone saying hes not good enough is short sighted. if we take any one of our 3 more senior cbs bad/worst performances alone, we could say they dont derserve to play any more, but of course they do because we know the good games they can have. but coates, who never gets a chance to have a run in the team to build up any momentum, gets slagged off for one bad performance and hasnt played again since. same happened with insua really.

  2. Ever occur to you that perhaps hes not good enough? Because one thing Rodgers does do right is that he gives players a chance to play if they're good enough

  3. I wouldnt be too bothered if he left,he concedes way to many free kicks around the box

  4. this is the same guy who prefers joe allen to jordan henderson despite not only henderson having played a lot better recently, but also allen not even properly fit. and this is the man who im supposed to trust doesnt play favourites? he only gave suso and sterling so many chances because he had to, and now look, suso hasnt had a single minute since the cup tie he played in. i like rodgers but i think you are wrong about coates, and if rodgers thinks hes not good enough either, i think hes wrong too. im a good judge of players and was one of the supporters of lucas since the beginning, and look how good he has become, even though he had to change his position for the team.

  5. Coates is a young and inexperienced defender, and giving up on a player for that is senseless. He should be loaned out to a Premier League club to gain first team football and experience in the EPL. At 28, Agger has shown real development and he is a world class defender. However, he requires a string-headed, authoritative and experienced partner like Carragher to be at his best. He is,weak alongside Skrtel because Skrtel hasn't become the defender he was supposed to. He's neither Carragher nor Agger and while he still worth something, if ever there was a defender to cash in on it's Skrtel.

  6. to be fair they were a great partnership last season. but i do think its time for skrtel to move on, maybe he needs to for personal reasons because he doesnt seem in the right frame of mind at liverpool. i appreciate what he has done in previous seasons but i think it would be sensible to take the highest offer (preferably russian money as theyre likely to pay bigger). i think we should keep coates, loan out wisdom (who is a cb really), and also play kelly at cb too. that means we only have to go out and buy 1 world class cb to partner agger with coates and kelly for depth. i vote howedes.

  7. He gives away stupid free kicks, and is way too prone to mistakes. He's been like this for years, and only last year's solid form papered over these cracks. He still did stupid things last year though, like being the second man sent off against spurs when losing 4-0.

  8. we need a marshal in defense.Someone who is constantly barking orders and keeping players concentrated.. A defender who is good with his head and feet. Communication is vital in defense

  9. If we can take 14.000.000 pounds for Skrtel let him leave, but not for less... For me is a good player having a bad season, but I would sell him anyday for this money! We need a center back, as good as Agger, but Rodgers will not give a proper chance to Coates, who is a pure class, who just needs more playing time and patience... Maybe Coates could have his chances if he was... SEBASTIAN ALLEN!!!

  10. skrtel leaves it will be an end to a poor era in our defence, regardless of the pointless stats with goal difference etc, he and agger have cost us points many of times. skrtel more so. skrtel is a one season wonder.....by his own standards.
as for suarez twisted rumours its hardly surprising, he is the best player in the league. not such a bad thing though, it may push the owners into showing more intent and ambition, starting with 2 proven (tough) centre backs, Alonso back, and a decent forward on par with sturridge, I wouldn't rule out a cheeky bid for torres to come back.............watch this space !!!!

  12. I have been saying this all along! We need the likes of Shawcross! He is strong, tall and aggressive! He is young like FSG like and also a Pom with EPL experience!
Also love to see Kelly given a chance there to fight for places with Agger and Coates whom I believe we should loan out for a season to another EPL club!

  13. I agree with you.Coates shd be loaned out to gain necessary experience.I believe coates is a gem.Just needs to be polished. He is like agger. What Lfc needs is a commanding CB.Someone in the mould of Carra..Someone who can lead the defence and give commands. It has been proven the past few seasons that agger without carra is helpless.Play him alongside skrtel and both is a disaster waiting to happen.Skrtel is clueless.Yes i do admit he is good. But only when he plays with a commanding CB.If not..he is just a defensive liability when put alongside Agger.Just my two cents worth of thoughts..

  15. I think Skrtel's mind is made up. He wouldn't be so out in the open about it if he had not decided to leave yet. There are rumours about other players too, Reina and Suarez for example, but they never comment and if they do, it's just to say that they want to stay at Liverpool. Sure Suarez has said he will listen to interested clubs if it's in his AND LIVERPOOL's best interest but Skrtel and his manager only speak about the player. They're well entitled to of course because it's the guys career and he wants to play. He's given us his best ever since coming to the club and even though things may not be going his way right now, he's earned our respect. If we can get something in the area of what is quoted, it would be a good deal for all parties concerned.

  16. I agree completely. People all seem so quick to write off players, based on minimal evidence. Coates is still only 22. Such a throw-away culture i'm afraid.

  17. Agger is not as good as people think. He is a lightweight.

  18. I'm sorry but Agger is not a world class defender (IMO).
