Aldo: 'Excellent' starlet has a 'great chance' of breaking through. Next Gerrard...?

Earlier this week, Eighteen year old midfielder Jack Dunn scored a winning goal on his debut for Liverpool's U21 side, and after watching the game, Reds legend John Aldridge tipped the Scouser to make a breakthrough into the first team.

Discussing the 2-1 away victory over Wolves, Aldo enthused:

"Good win by the under 21s against Wolves after going behind early in the game. Coady and Dunn scoring.

"He [Dunn] was excellent again tonight, and he's got a great chance of breaking through [into the first team] in time"

U21 boss Alex Inglethorpe also heaped praised on the youngster, who has scored seven goals this season. He told LFC.com:

“That was probably the most pleased I’ve been with the team’s performance since I’ve been here. We all know Jack can score goals - it’s something he has shown throughout all the age groups"

Being a Liverpudlian himself, Aldo has an understandable pro-Scouse bias, but he may be right about Dunn, especially given the fact that the Reds are actively trying to bring homegrown players into the first team, and the head of Liverpool's Academy, Frank McParland, confirmed this in a recent interview. He told the Official LFC site:

"It's the ultimate. You'd love to get a Stevie or a Carra through, and I can assure you that we're working really hard to do that. I don't think it will be too long before that happens. We scout in Liverpool. I still want the Scouse kids here."

Dunn is a huge fan of Spain's La Liga, and in a recent interview with the Chester Chronicle, he said:

"I watch Lionel Messi every week in La Liga. He's just incredible. I'm always looking to learn and improve my game.”

The LFC website described Dunn as follows:

"Jack Dunn is an all-round midfielder who excelled as captain of the U16s last season. The scouser has earned rave reviews for his repertoire of passing and has featured for England at youth level"

Sound familiar? Let the inevitable Steve Gerrard comparisons begin...

  1. Great pass by Nacho, more impressive than the actual finish imo. I would love for the next scouse kids to break into the first team but I think when one does, it will be a defender. Our midfield and frontline is starting to turn into something really special and difficult to break into.

  3. I've followed JD through the age groups and so pleased he's continuing his form in the under 21s - fully believe that with his ability and enthusiasm he will make it and would love to see how he would handle his debut but unless its home v west ham don't see it happening this year

  4. Lets not get ahead of ourselves just yet. But could be one for the future.
    Lets hope so!

  5. Imo risky as we need a bit more experience at the back...unless fullbacks - and we're already overstocked with kids there!! Although Ryan Mcglouchlin looks as though he could displace wisdom to CB!

  8. If you can do that a couple of times per game, week in week out with the likes of n'Zonzi or Momo Diame on your back I think BR has a job for you.

  9. I think JD is in a similar position to adorjan and teixera - desperate for them to continue their progression but can't see how/when they will fit when fan and financial demands call for short term results...

  11. Great left foot and very quick, good goalscorer. Jordan Rossiter, Texeira, Ibe, Sinclair etc, are all top quality, watch them on LFCTV, every game live.

  14. Saw the wolves game...Dunn done well. Is he ready for the 1st team? Not at the moment. But certainly has potential.

I think in talent and potential alone our academy is only second to La Masia.

  15. Agree but 1 or 2 at a time for a couple of games in a row would be nice..keep the basis of the team - keep it realistic later than europa qualifiers

  22. I'm sure that we all hope that Jack and any other liverpool player has a career similar to stature of Steven.(that progresses to winning the Epl&Cl) but players /fans must find there own identity whist keeping one eye on the past as well as looking to the future.
