'It'd be brilliant' - Reds legend admits he'd 'love' a new club. Return to LFC...?

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler is widely recognised as one of English football's greatest ever goalscorers, and although he left the club (for the second time) in 2006, he is still much-missed by Reds fans. Well, Reds may still get to see Fowler in action again, albeit for a different club, as he's revealed that he's actively looking for a new team.

In an interview with Sport360 last night, Fowler - who is the Premier League's 4th highest all-time goalscorer - said:

"I’ve not officially retired.

"I know that sounds stupid because I haven’t got a club at the moment, but if anything comes up with either coaching or playing anywhere, I’d jump at the chance.

"I’ve always loved the game and given the opportunity I’d love to [play again]. If I get a chance as a player for six months or a year that would be brilliant"

Just imagine if Liverpool had the mid-90s Fowler in the team right now? The club would probably be top of the league. I don't think I've ever seen a more natural goalscorer for Liverpool in my lifetime; Fowler was a genius, and I'm sure he still has some of that goalscoring ability in his locker.

Rafa Benitez pulled a masterstroke when he brought Fowler back to Anfield in 2006, and it's probably one of the reasons why Liverpool fans have such affection for the former manager.

Bringing Fowler back to Liverpool again as a player is possibly a bit unrealistic at this stage (!), though if the likes of Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane and David Beckham can still offer something at a similar age, why not a fully-fit Fowler?

Realistically though, coaching is Fowler's best bet right now, so what about a return to Anfield in that capacity? I'd love to see Reds legends take on a bigger football-related role at the club, especially on the coaching side of things.

  1. We could certainly have him on board the coaching team trying to help the players put their chances away.

  2. Id like to see Fowler play for Liverpool one last time for Carras final game, now its not gonna happen but it would be great to see

  3. Surely having Fowler as a striking coach wouldn't be a bad thing. The likes of Adam Morgan, Samed Yesil and even Suarez can learn a lot from him.

  4. Jaimie while I agree with every sentiment about GOD .. I doubt we be top of the league if we had him in the team at the moment .. it's a bit too simplistic..

He always has and will be my favourite LFC player.. Had the pleasure of seeing him many times at Anfield at his peak.. He was as you say a genius.. Also had the pleasure of meeting him, and for once the adage of you should never meet your heroes was thankfully wrong.. an absolute top bloke to boot.

I'd love to see him back at the club in a coaching role .. maybe starting in the youth set up and imparting some of his genius on our up and coming kids..

  5. Yea sign him up! Attacking coach, Carra as defensive coach, and then when Stevie retires, he can be a coach too!

  6. I would be awesome if he came back to Liverpool as a coach. He's footballing experience is valuable. Can you imagine Carra as a coach and Fowler too? Amazing.

PS this whole "god" thing is absolutely ridiculous lol!

  7. The word 'God' means different things to different people..

It can be defined as ' a supreme being and a principle object of faith'

Fowler was a supreme being, in footballing terms, and was the principle object of my faith in the Church of LFC..

So while you may find the term laughable and ridiculous .. to some myself included it is perfectly applicable ..

  9. I'll never understand how Houllier is still allowed inside the stadium after robbing the club of one of the top five greatest players that ever played for it and replacing him with....Emile Hesey...If there was ever a transfer that shows a complete lack of understanding when it comes to football it was that one.

  10. It is blatantly obvious that he does not get on with Gerrard. STEVIE IS MORE IMPORTANT With £28 million Robbie can buy his own team.

  11. Reading the useless Joe Cole's comments today confirms what I said many times - he is an ungreatful failure, the failure part is forgivable. he should bev apologising to Liverpool fc and fans.

  12. If you look at Robbies form and more importantly fitness
during his time at Leeds, as much as I loved to see god
in his prime I think Houllier did well to get £11m for him
at that time. But if you have access to someone with that much
striking talent and a young formative squad it would be
grossly negligent to not use him in some form of coaching
    capacity.

  13. You already are awesome! Dont put yourself down like that.

  14. Ya cause I had him down as one of the best goalkeepers and CB's to play for the club too.. ??

Besides stating the obvious ..What's your point ?

  15. Here's something off the beat n track.. Jamie do you think Raphael should get the suarez treatment for flopping for penalties and handling on the goaline last night. I bet there won't be a word about it. Can anyone say double standard??

  16. Does he play for Liverpool? Do Rafael's action reflect badly on LFC? No. So what's your point?

  17. Fowler is a legend, not sure on the coaching thing though, I`m not a fan of the fact that cause someone was a great player they will be a great coach. Maybe in some role helping the coaches he could have a role, as he will understand movements etc, but it would def have to be just as a assistant to the main coaches.

  18. It`s a fair point. The truth is, he wont get much press, know why? he don`t sell papers. This aint no Victim thing, just the simple truth. This is why when everyone treats Saurez`s diving and cheating like he just started a war, I tend to defend him a little, not because I think cheating is ok, it clearly isn`t, but because when it picks on just one person, it becomes bullying, and I always stand up for those who are being picked on. Also because when done on a mass scale, it looks more like the press just trying to make a buck. If the press hounded ALL cheats the same, I would have a lot more time for there arguments over Suarez. In regards to Jamie writing about it, well I have seen a few posts non LFC related, so it could be valid point, but I don`t have a problem with a Liverpool fan looking at there own team and just commenting on there own players, for good and bad. The issue for me is when other fans, and press who are unbaised (meant to be) start treating Suarez like he is the only one. Thing is that is just how the world is, it may not be nice, but we don`t live in a fair world, where everyone is treated equal. This can be seen from the fact Evra was allowed to call Suarez "a dirty south American" which Evra admitted, and get no punishment, yet when Suarez used the word "Negrito" back he got punished, anyone with any sense of justice would have banned both for the same amount of time, but the world and thus football doesn`t work on fairness or justice, but down to money, and power. I`m not a fan of this whole focus just on kicking Racisum out of football, to me this is one of the big problems, instead of saying, lets kick all hatred and abuse out of football, as to be honest there is no difference calling someone a racist name, as opposed to a homophobic one, or one which slates family members etc, all are as bad on equal measure as the other, and only focusing one one issue has meant, as seen with the Evra-Suarez case the F.A gave the all clear to be abusive towards people, in all areas other than skin color/race, which seems somewhat absurd to me.

So back to the original point, I think we all know that if in two games on the same weekend two players handball it into the goal, one being Suarez, one a different player, Suarez will be the one on the back pages, with lots of name slinging thrown into the headline. Maybe if we didn`t buy them papers on that day, or comment on articles online which held one man responisble for a groups actions, they papers and online bloggers wouldn`t pick on just one guy so much, as there pockets would lose out, but we all know, we will post on them articles, and we will buy them papers, so in part we are also to blame.

  19. You ask what is my point is in a sarcastic manner - you accuse me of stating the obvious and your right I did, yet you need to ask me what the blatantly obvious is?. Well here it is.
I am a liverpudlian and a Kopite from the days of Billy Liddell but I am also a Christian. You make it sound like you have to be one or the other.

  20. Jamie k Can't anyone get an obvious point on here - the guys point is Saurez was villified for doing the same thing for Uraguay in the World Cup.

  21. I have wrote you a nice long reply, but last few days im getting modded and flagged for everything, so if it turns up or not is anyones guess lol

  22. Jamie, is there anyway to change the filter system? or does that mean not using Discuss? which I imagine is a pain to change. I only ask as although I get the idea is for it to stop abuse etc, but it clearly don`t work, as i often read loads of very abusive comments, not modded, not deleted, or flagged on here, so just wondering if it serves any purpose other than to flag/mod random stuff. I`m trying to work out this word filter, but I have had posts modded/flagged which don`t even contain words close to anything that could even be deemed bad. It it just one of them things which is a case of rough with the smooth? You use Discuss, and thats just part of it?

    ReplyDelete
  23. OMG everything I write is getting modded, theres no way my last comment even had anything close to a bad/abusive word in it. thats about 10 now in two days. I am struggling to understand what words are actually deemed bad, is it the word "the" or "and" as this is puzzling me a lot. Yes this is a rant, but the amount of posts which I`m losing is getting silly.

  24. May I refer you to your article the other day about "Redknapp raves about talented midfielder" which was mainly all about a player who plays for Chelsea, commented on by the QPR boss, which at the end has a few lines about Continho. The main part of the article was non LFC related, so it could be argued that the gentlemen`s above comment is of a simular ilk. While the general theme would be about a player for another club, he cross references it with a player from our club. The player may not play for LFC, but the man has a point if he means in general, with the double standards statement, if he just means to you personally, then I get your reply.

    ReplyDelete
  25. There is an LFC link with the Redknapp article. He is an ex-Red, thus his opinion on stuff has merit (to me, anyway), which is why I highlighted it. The Rafael incident has no direct LFC link. It took place in a game that has nothing to do with the Reds. If an ex player mentioned it, I might write about it, but no one has.

In any event, to compare that incident with Suarez is just laughable. Does Rafael have a long, negative history of cheating and gamesmanship? No.

  26. The filter does work. Big time. Every day, it stops about 500-600 abusive, and or spamming comments from going live. If those went live, the comment section would be overrun with crap, and it would be impossible to have a discussion.

The filter misses some stuff, but that happens with any filter. Unfortunately, it sometimes catches legit posts, but they go live very quickly.

In other cases, it's not even the filter, it's Disqus. The system is really glitchy, and sometimes comments appear, then disappear, then appear again later. It's the nature of the beast. I'm constantly tweaking the filter to make it more effective, but I can't do anything about Disqus overall, unfortunately.

Having said that, the glitchy nature of it does my head in a bit, so I'm actively looking at different comment system at the moment, and may change over to something more stable at some point soon.

I apologise if your comments get held every now and again.

  27. yeah i understand the stopping of spam. Just one of them things I guess, I can handle the odd random one, but just seems last two days almost everything I write is not getting posted for a few hours. I would guess its more the glitch, as some of the posts which don`t go live, could never be deemed to have any bad words. I think once I posted a reply just saying "I agree" and it got modded lol. Any way you could have a list of the banned words on here somewhere so we know what not to write? Or as I`m thinking would that be a bit silly, as then it would just be a list of swear words haha.

  28. Yeah my mind was being slow. Don`t know why I thought Harry not Jamie lol. I did actually read the article too, and comment on it I think. clearly just having a slow minded day haha.

his history is debatable, I have seen a lot of dives from him in the past, but then again I have from almost every player. Its prob quicker to name the ones i aint than the ones I have. Diving aside though, Suarez has a worse aggression history, and therefore scandel style history than Rafael for sure.

  29. Robbie was a natural goal scorer, what he had came without him having to work at it to the same extent as a player like Aldo, for that reason I think Aldo would be better placed as a coach.

  31. i think my local team (on merseyside) Tranmere should snap him up :).. theyve had jason macateer .. john barnes was a temp manager .. even though got sacked for wining only 2 in 11 games .. john alridge played for em back in 91.. be a great opportunity for fowler to be back on merseyside :)

  32. Agreed mate, while he was over in Oz, playing for our Perth Glory, myself and the old man got to meet god. Really nice guy, very down to earth and didn't mind chatting about the game (alot of players/ex players get iffy about people asking questions about their days in the game).

Top player, top professional and I'd love to see him teach our boys some tricks.

    ReplyDelete
  33. He was the only striker in the league then that could beat Peter Schmeichel comfortably in one-on-one situation. If he is still with LFC, Man Utd will be chasing our ass in the league instead of us chasing for fourth.

  34. Oh so I've offended your Christian beliefs ?? Well I don't apologise..

I never claimed claimed you had to be 'one or the other'  .. I made a comment in which I stated Robbie Fowler was a God..

I've already explained the definition of a 'god' and without wanting to upset your beliefs any further, if you find such a statement somehow denigrates from YOUR God that's your problem.

I'm not even going to get into YOUR God and Christianity, but needless to say if I did I would open up a can of woop ass on you..

If you or anybody else is offended by me referring to Robbie Fowler as a God .. Though..

I ment it in a sporting term .. he is a God ..

    But for the record..

I don't believe some guy turned wine into water or raised the dead.. BUT .. I was in the ground when Robbie turned the end line into a coke line a scored a hatrick in 4 mins and 23 seconds

    Only God could do that...
