Spineless cowards? FIFA reveals its decision on the Luis Suarez punch incident

During Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier between Uruguay and Chile, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez added boxing to his repertoire of on-field assault when he delivered a blatant right-hook to the face of Chile defender Gonzalo Jara. In the past, the Uruguayan has bitten and stamped his way to controversy, but this latest incident was arguably the most blatant infraction of the lot. After the game, FIFA stated that it was 'still collecting all the post-match reports, and once acquired, it would 'proceed accordingly'. Well, luckily for Suarez, Fifa's spineless indifference has struck again, and it looks like he won't face any further action.

According to The Mirror:

"FIFA have confirmed no action will be taken against Luis Suarez despite the punch he threw at Chile defender Gonzalo Jara while playing for Uruguay this week - unless the incident is mentioned in the fourth official's report.

"The world game’s governing body have already said referee Nestor Pitana didn't refer to the punch in his match report, and they will not take any retrospective action"

That Suarez punched Jara is beyond doubt:

If punching another player in the face is not worth retrospective action, then what is?! What kind of message does this send to kids who love football? The current law on the issue - as outlined by FIFA's sickly, kowtowing cousin, the FA - is as follows:

"Where one of the officials has seen a coming together of players, no retrospective action should be taken, regardless of whether he or she witnessed the full or particular nature of the challenge. If at least one of the match officials [sees the incident], retrospective action cannot be taken"

What difference does it make *who* sees the incident? If something happens during a game (whether it's cheating, a reckless tackle or outright assault), and the referee - for whatever reason - fails to act, then retrospective action should be an option after the game.

As football fans know only too well, referees and linesmen make countless mistakes, but the current law basically states that the referee/linesman's decision is absolute to the extent that it extinguishes the possibility of retrospective action. What if the ONE official who sees a given incident gets the decision totally wrong?

It's a complete joke.

Suarez clearly deserved punishment for the punch, but he'll get away with it, and there's absolutely no deterrent to stop him - or anyone else - from doing something similar in the future.

The fact that Jara stayed on his feet made the decision easy for FIFA; If Suarez had connected properly and knocked the guy out, I'm sure football's alleged governing body would be singing a different tune right now.

I'll inevitably be attacked by the pro-Suarez brigade for this post, but ultimately, it's sheer hypocrisy. If, for example, a Montenegro player had punched Steven Gerrard in the head the other night and got away with it, most LFC fans would be baying for that player's blood, and exhorting FIFA to hand out some form of punishment.

If they did charge him then this would of gone down bad in the football world because they've let David villa off for punching before. Also we could say the same for the FA for RVP incident against Newcastle.

  2. I think you're Manchester united fan , all your articles are negative , give us a break ffs , so bored of you man , do you really support LFC???? Doubt it

    ReplyDelete
  3. jamie its about time you got behind the club and players you say you support, suarez was having his nuts squeezed by the opposing player prior to the punch, and i dont know about you but any man done that to me he would get the same treatment regardless of where and when it happened!!!! Support your club man and stop going after suarez everytime he does something, its not the S*n your writing for, its liverpool supporters YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  4. I really wish they would change that stupid rule. It makes no sense this plus Ferdinand's cowardly trip against Torres should both be punished!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Please don't tell me how to support. Just because Suarez plays for LFC doesn't mean you just brush the negative incidents under the carpet, that is not 'support' for the club; it is support for the individual over the club.

If any other LFC player had punched someone during a game, I would've written exactly the same. It just so happens it's always Suarez getting involved in these incidents.

Additionally, just because Suarez was provoked, doesn't mean he has the right to retaliate with a punch to the face, which is what you seem to be advocating.

Your hypocrisy is obvious though; if some Montenegro player lamped Steven Gerrard the other night, you'd and every other LFC fan would be baying for the player's blood; you wouldn't be giving him a pass like you are with Suarez.

  7. Getting bored of your anti-Suarez articles Jaimie. You're as bad as the Daily Mail. Jara didn't react, Jara was tugging his shirt and niggling at him all game so even he expected a reaction from Suarez but to say it was a "blatant right hook" is taking it a bit far. There was barely enough force to knock a child down. Okay the intention was there but it wasn't exactly a Mike Tyson hook,we see this type of incident regularly in all leagues go unpunished so it's unfair of you to say Suarez got away with it

    ReplyDelete
  8. How do you know there was 'barely enough force to knock a child down'? Were you on the end of the punch? No.

The fact Jara didn't react means nothing. Suarez threw a punch, and he connected. End of story. The strength of the punch is irrelevant; the intention is what matters, and he intended to punch an opposition player.

The pro-Suarez posts are always the same, it's so predictable. The arguments are always:

    * The issue wasn't that serious.
    * it happens all the time
    * Other players do it too

    Etc.

PS. Drop the derogatory comments from your future posts. If you can't debate without hurling insults, don't bother posting at all.

  10. Luis will never change. What he does isnt nice, but also not that bad in the grand scheme of things. He will always bend the rules and lash out at other players. I don`t really like that side of him tbh but it is apart of him. The punch wasn`t exactly full on power, so no harm would ever have been done. He should really have been banned after for it though as you can`t go about punching people even if it is softly as it sets a bad example to people watching.

On a side note the defender should have also been booked for holding him, although defenders never get done for that.

  11. Bristol no knowledge of Liverpool. Coward who refuses to accept people's comments and moderates them.... If you can't argue don't run a site...

    ReplyDelete
  12. If they start charging players retrospectively then they've a bit of a backlog to go through. This isn't the first time a player has swung a punch at someone in a match. It wasn't even a good one. This is just another example of the media blowing something out of proportion because it's Suarez. Players punch each other sometimes, and usually much better than Suarez's tame effort, but there is nowhere near as much said about it in the media.

Suarez is a great player and has a great will to win. He's similar to Roy Keane in that respect. A player who targeted another player and purposefully broke his leg and then spat on him when he was lying in agony. He was sent off for that and numerous other maulings but was never subjected to the media witch hunt that Suarez is. It's wrong. And if it continues Liverpool will lose a great player and take a massive backwards step. But that's what they want.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Again with the 'Suarez is a victim of the nasty machiavellian media'?! Awww. Poor Luis. So wronged. So innocent.

And your recollection of the Keane-Haaland incident is predictably skewed. He received huge media barracking for that incident, and other incidents in which he was involved. Of course, as is usually the case with the perception of LFC fans, no one in world football is attacked by the media as much as poor Luis.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Where is Jaras left hand going on the second video? why does he grimace before luis digs him? did he perhaps give suarez a good old fashioned squeeze on the gonads? if so. I totally applaud suarez for his actions as defenders spend quite a bit of their time punching, elbowing and kicking strikers outta the game and to say they do not is rubbish. Nice to see a forward take the physical approach to defenders for a change.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why dont you stop the luis suarez witch hunt and just celebrate the genius that he is. The man is a born winner wish we had a few more like him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Way to not mention the fact that jara grabs suarez's balls before that. I see you have tunnel vision

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jaimie, for once, I can say that I agree with you 100%. Suarez should have been held accountable and he was wrong.

My question is, what should have been the most appropriate punishment and how should it have affected LFC in particular?

In my view, since this happened in a Uruguay game, it should not affect his playing with LFC. (If he did the same in an LFC shirt, it should not affect his playing with Uruguay).

    Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's obviously, Liverpool fans love Suarez because he's a genius with the ball and genuinely a nice guy. Everyone else hates him because he's a genius with the ball and and fights back! Suarez is certainly making everyone eat their words this season by being the obvious best player whether he wins the title or not doesn't matter we all know who was been the best through the whole season. Liverpool fans love tough men wearing the famous red and not some p u s s y that defenders walk all over and cower away. I wish Liverpool had 11 Suarez's.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Roy Keane may have been barracked by the media for that incident. I admitted that he was. But he was not scrutinized every game for anything that could be contstrued as 'bad behaviour'. He was never labelled a cheat by a commentator for an innocuous handball for example. He also never had his actions described with the kind of language that Suarez is. Language such as 'dispicible' 'disgusting' and 'racist' are thrown at Luis every week.
He has his faults like everyone but he doesn't deserve the treatment he gets from the media in England.
If an English player had done some of the things Suarez has done we wouldn't be labelled with this language. I don't even need a hypothetical, compare Suarez with John Terry. His actions, on and off the field, speak volumes about his character. But we rarely hear any thing from the English media about him. And when we do, it is certainly without the rhetoric reserved for Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  22. not changing the subject but why has nothing happened or hardly mentioned about ferdinands jump into the back of torres? ..............................could of killed him !! ;0)

  23. Suarez is a great player but he has to learn to cut this snide streak out of his game...He can still be great without all these stupid acts of petulance that tarnish his rep... The best way he can get revenge on defenders is to score..

  24. are you seriousl attempting to call Suarez's hand ball as "innocuous"?? hahaha you chancer.. blatant hand ball and wasnt Maradona labelled a cheat for something similar by all of England and still is !!!!!!! 33. That is a compliment if anything.

No reason to punch someone for it, unless you're Chris Brown (I'm assuming Rihanna grabbed his balls at some point, coz that's really sexy and that).

Look how delighted Gazza was when Vinnie Jones grabbed his bollocks.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe Jaimie goes a bit far on Suarez sometimes, but you can't really argue with this, surely?
I don't think this is the end of the world, nor did I when Fellaini did something similar (I'm a regular Mr. Consistency), but it clearly isn't on and warranted a ban.
Support for Suarez, or indeed anyone, would be hollow, if you didn't take the time to wag the finger at people who aren't doing their job properly.
More than the 'what will the kids think' angle Jaimie took, which is fair enough I suppose, I think the most disappointing element of this is the fact that he could have missed a big chunk of Uruguay's qualifying campaign (including the vital game against Venezuela) because of this, but that didn't seem to enter his reckoning.
Uruguay have backed him to the hilt, but I don't think this is a good way to repay that faith.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In his defence JK, I recreated the incident with a child (may be mine, DNA tests pending) and proved that the punch didn't have the force to 'knock a child down'.

Speak for everyone why don't you..

Do you not get it .. ? The only player who has offered any real joy in watching Liverpool for these past 2 and a half dismal season's is Luis Suarez.

The only real entertainment for supporters who were born and fed on a staple diet of world class skill, brilliance and entertainment is Luis Suarez.

Luis Suarez is our last tangible link to genuine world class player's and world class football..

Is it any wonder fan's are desperate to appease and defend him.. right or wrongly. Your surely aware of how the fan's mindset is working.. and how as supporter's we can take a bias view on incidents involving him.

I understand Suarez is good for business. Even better when you give him stick on a LFC website .. click click click...

But when you talk down to, instead of to, a group of people on any subject your going to meet resistance.

Even if it is just for the clicks..

  48. Just search on 'la Celeste' for 'to all Liverpool FC fans' and it'll come up.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lets break it down.

Defending Suarez doesn't give Suarez precedence over LFC, because Suarez plays for LFC, he is part of LFC, and you never let a player walk alone. He represents everything good about them. Hard work, skill, loyalty. If he represents these things he represents LFC fully and its up to us fans to support him if he wants to defend his family jewels. Besides, we are talking about him playing for HIS country and not LFC, who in hindsight, would have preferred him to stay in England instead of shipping him halfway across the world to play football.

If any other LFC player had punched someone during a game, you wouldn't have written the article exactly the same, because in this article, I see a passion to despise Luis Suarez, that's something you can't emulate with any other LFC player. Most people will agree, and you will beg to differ.

Suarez doesn't "always" get involved in these incidents, just wanted to point that mistake out.

Suarez stated pre-match that he was going to keep his head in the game and not pick up unnecessary fouls and curb his aggression. But he gets provoked in a way he didn't expect. These defenders on corners are a nasty piece of work, they pinch you, grab, pull and push. He lost control. And as fans we obviously don't "advocate" retaliation to that, but we can "understand" why he did it and got empathy for the guy.

As for the Montenegro reference, your just using an example that is fabricated to match your point. We can go all day down that route but I would rather stick to constructive arguments based on reality.

    ReplyDelete

  55. Not a shock that you have commented on this incident. What a pity that we don't have an angelic strker like Rvp or saint Rooney. Your blog is very addictive and clever as it incites the hatred that you are so much against. If Luis left Liverpool we would be Swansea, reading everton or stoke. Did he refuse you an autograph or say something nasty to your mum while she was ironing your nappy. Jason, you are just part of the problem. It WAS a punch. Clear as day. Look at the video. Why do you defend something so blatantly wrong? I'm not going to post a thread because there's no point. If it happened in an LFC shirt I would, but I can't be bothered to argue with people who condone Suarez's behaviour. Total waste of time.

  61. Actually, I have played competitive football, and still do to this day. Instinctive reaction? Is that why Suarez makes a fist first before he punches him? Nothing 'instinctive' about that at all.

    ReplyDelete
  62. if it was "instinctive" as you put it you would push them away not get closer then swing a punch. If someone (male) try to grab my balls i would push them ask what the hell are they trying to do then my next move would depend on how many beers i have had, if i hit him or walked away.

  72. Pretty much the same msg that was sent out by the fa wen Rvp nearly took a players head of with an elbow of the ball Suarez is a hot head but that's wat makes him the player he is. The scum from down the road have had players like him for years (cantona keane) whatever it takes to win we could do with our back line takin a leaf out of his book and not be slating him every time

    ReplyDelete
  73. Actually Jaimie, I have never hit my child but recently at school, the well known (by teachers and kids) school bully slapped my child. She told her teacher and nothing has happened. So I have now told my child if it happens again, to punch this bully in the face and when teachers react, she must call me and I will take it up with the teachers and parents. Unfortunately, those in charge never doing anything about it, so retaliation becomes the norm, although it is unacceptable. Now put yourself in Suarez's boots, you have just been kicked, pushed, punched, biten and the last straw is someone grabbing your balls, the defender gets everything coming to him. it's not about defending Suarez, its about complaining about the referees lack of refereeing. Thats there job and there is four of them!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hold on Jaimie - I just said you were being very negative, not exactly slagging you off is it?
I just gave my opinion that the continued slating of Suarez on this site is getting boring. I'm not saying everything on this site is rubbish but that particular aspect is getting very tired.
I don't think I was not being civil and I was only expressing my opinion which is surely the basis of any debate. If everyone thought the same way then there would be no debate!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Calling something 'boring' is not debating the issue at hand. It's a lazy derogatory comment. Same re moaning about negativity. I'm entitled to my view on Suarez, and I back it up every time at length with valid reasoning. Just because you and others don't like the view, doesn't mean it's without merit. I'm not interested in the opinions of people who can't get the point across without resorting to childish derogatory comments.

It's not a case of everyone thinking the same. Most people here disagree with me, but they do so in the right way. I don't go around responding to people saying 'your defence of Suarez is getting boring', as that is irrelevant to the point.

If you want your posts to stay live in future, attack the argument, not the person. Fans are used to just throwing around insults on LFC sites, but that is outlawed here. Like it or lump it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. "Like it or lump it" - now who is being childish!! lol

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this - I don't think saying that the repeated criticism of Suarez on this site is becoming boring is in any way a childish comment. I actually can't think of any other way of saying it.

I understand that you want each article to be discussed separately and argue it's merits individually but there are an awful lot of articles on this site that are critical of Suarez. I get the fact that he is a divisive figure and many of the things he does border on the edge of acceptable, sometimes going the wrong side of that border, but I also feel that it is a valid comment to say that this is another article in a long list and as each one appears the overall argument gets very repetitive (and therefore boring).
This particular incident is not (IMO) worthy of such an amazing amount of coverage and criticism. The guy has a hold of him and he gives him a little dig in the chops. There is the same amount of contact happening in every game I watch whenever there is a corner. Why is OK to elbow people in the ribs, tread on their toes, push them in the back or grab hold of them? Yet you do not criticise these people in the same way.
Whether you do actually dislike Suarez or not I'm not sure, but the impression I get is that you do dislike him and seem to take great pleasure in highlighting every little thing he does wrong.
It all smacks a bit of making a mountain out of a molehill.
This is just my opinion - it is not a lazy, derogatory comment.

    ReplyDelete
  85. You just don't get it, do you? Whether you think it's boring is *irrelevant*. If you disagree with the article, argue against the points raised. I'm not interested in whether you think there are too many articles about Suarez. Again, that is also irrelevant, as is the notion that you think I 'dislike' Suarez. Additionally, if you think this incident is not worthy of coverage, tough luck. Go to some other site that isn't covering it.

Again: if you want your comments to stay live, attack the argument, not the person. If you want to bitch and moan about all of the above irrelevant things, go to some other site and do it.

The fact that you and so many others just don't get what this site is about is truly staggering. As the tagline says: 'critical realism about LFC', which means taking a critical approach. You should expect critical articles, and if you can't hack the critical approach, go elsewhere.

Please do not prolong this pointless exchange. It's simple: debate the issues, and stop with the pointless derogatory comments. If you can't do that, you're not welcome here.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I have to say I have watched both of these several times and I don't see it anything like you do Jaimie. It is clear that the other player does something first and it is clear that yes, Suarez DOES raise his hand and hit him. However it is a quick reactionary movement, not a malicious punch designed to hurt the other guy. The other guy doesn't even make anything of it at all. It's just a media thing looking at something in slo-mo and seeing some that really is t there. If this was a clear case of assault, the law of the game DOES allow for retrospective action because the law of the land overrides the laws of football but this is definitely not a case of assault that would ever stand up in court.

  87. I'm sorry that you feel that way.

In my last post I have discussed the article in question and given my opinion on it but you've chosen to ignore that part of my post.

Saying that I believe the incident has been blown out of proportion is also a valid point about the article but, as you have already stated, my thoughts don't matter.
I must confess then I am unclear on what I can and can't post so I've obviously made a mistake!

    C'est la vie!

  88. Shock, horror!!! Football authorities do nothing as usual!!!!

Citing, sin bin, video replay challenges, retrospective punishment would all help stamp out foul play.

Suarez is clearly guilty of striking his opponent but I am comfortable with justifying his reaction to apparent sexual assault

  90. Jaimie The FA agreed that rule before the start of the season; hence no sanction for that awful (career ending) Wigan tackle against Newcastle because the assistant ref saw it!

This is just handbags in the penalty area; South American football is mano v mano; if someone grabs your nuts you react instinctively but that "right hook" was delivered from just a few inches, so not much more than a push. please do not take up boxing commentary; you will be laughed out of court!

just stick to your anti-Liverpool agenda; i wish i could block your self serving posts; your only interest is to generate hits for your advertising revenue

sickening exploitation of true reds; how much do you make from adverts on this site? If you are a true fan you will donate your profit to the Hillsborough justice campaign

    Nev the lifelong Red

  93. Perhaps if referees gave protection against cheating opoonents there would be no need for him to defend himself. Blatant fouling by defenders in the area now commonplace.
