Hamann: 'Fantastic' €3m star is LFC's 'best signing in last 15 years'.

Liverpool legend Sami Hyypia is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to wear the red shirt in modern times, and almost four years after he left, the club has still not found an adequate replacement for the imperious Fin. In the Premier League era, there aren't many better LFC signings that Hyypia, and Reds hero Dietmar Hamann is convinced that Sami is Liverpool's best signing in a long time.

Speaking to the official LFC site this week as part of a tribute to the towering defender, Hamann - who played alongside Hyypia for seven years - enthused:

"He [Hyypia] is Liverpool’s best signing of the last 15 years.

"Heading was obviously a big aspect of his game, but at the same time, his positioning, technique, and the way he passed the ball, was great. A fantastic player and a fantastic person as well"

Another former LFC defender, Gary Gillespie, added:

"I’ve been fortunate to play alongside Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen, two of the very best, but I’d put Sami up there alongside them"

Alan Hansen, widely considered to be Liverpool's best ever defender, continued:

"Would I have liked to have played alongside him? The answer is categorically yes"

After John Barnes, Sami is my favourite Reds player of all time; a superb footballer and a real gentleman who, as Gillespie states in the tribute, 'embodied everything that is great about Liverpool FC'.

Since he left, the gaping void at the heart of Liverpool's defence - and at the heart of LFC itself - has never been filled. The Reds miss Sami's imperious presence, especially his commanding aerial ability; organizational skills; leadership qualities and overall calming effect on the defence.

In my view, there are very few players at the club right now who have the same kind of class (both on and off the field) as Hyypia, and Liverpool really miss that. Indeed, Lucas and Carra are probably the only current Liverpool players who come close to Sami in terms of attitude, temperament, and humility.

As for Hyypia being the best LFC signing of the last 15 year - I absolutely agree with that 100%. In terms of consistency, impact and value for money, very few other players comes close (IMO).

My top ten signings of the last 15 years:

1. Sami Hyypia (G. Houllier)
2. Dietmar Hamann (GH)
3. Xabi Alonso (R. Benitez)
4. Fernando Torres (RB)
5. Gary McAllister (GH)

6. Jari Litmanen (GH)
7. John Arne Riise (GH)
8. Stephane Henchoz (GH)
9. Luis Garcia (RB)
10. Daniel Agger (RB)
