Confirmed LFC line-up vs. Man City: Hendo & Carra start; Defender dropped...

It's one hour until kick-off against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers has made one change to the team that started Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Andre Wisdom drops to the bench, and Jose Enrique comes back into the first XI:

FULL TEAM: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Carragher, Lucas, Gerrard, Henderson, Downing, Suarez, Sturridge.

SUBS: Jones, Wisdom, Skrtel, Allen, Shelvey, Sterling, Borini.

MAN CITY: Hart, Zabaleta , Nastasic, Lescott, Clichy, Milner, Garcia, Barry, Silva, Dzeko, Aguero

Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson predicts a 1-1 draw, and believes City will 'find it tough' against Liverpool. He told the BBC:

"City dropped points against QPR at Loftus Road on Tuesday and they will find it tough against Liverpool too. I think this will be a tight game, but there have to be worries over City's defence with Vincent Kompany out injured. If they show any sort of weakness then Luis Suarez will take them apart".

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Jan Molby urged the team to tighten up defensively, and warned that City have the 'individual brilliance' to pull to win games even when they're playing badly. He said:

"Liverpool should have beaten Man City at Anfield and they do have weaknesses we can exploit. However, City also have an array of attacking threats and we’ll need to defend better as a unit. City’s form hasn’t been great recently and I don’t think they have a system that gets the best out of their finest players like Aguero and Silva. But City don’t have to play well to beat you because they can win games through a piece of individual brilliance".

  1. This means suarez on the left, dont like it he loses the ball very much there plus agger again hope this time he doesnt make silly mistakes along with reina

  2. Good team. Happy hendo started too! And the beast erinque!:)

  3. if we tighten up defensively, we have a chance.

  4. apart from skrtel for carra, its our strongest team at the moment. even though i know many including jamie will say carra deserves his spot, i still think skrtel has more quality.

  5. What about Couthinho? You know something Jaimie? Why not even a sub?

  6. crap manager! not good enough for liverpool as he is tactically useless... a lot of u wont like my comment but fact is, its true!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Just shows you don't know much about football and how it takes time.....

    ReplyDelete
  8. I heard he had to go back to Milan for a few days to sort out a few things before returning, so he was never going to make it in time for today's squad anyhow.

    ReplyDelete
  9. if your happy with being a mid table team for the next 10-15 years playing the ''im a great fan, give the gaffa time'' card then be my guest... but i bet u was shouting hodgson out when he was gaffa! fact is he is simply not good enough. just FSG yes man...

    ReplyDelete
  10. According to Colin Pascoe on Friday: "He has to sort a few things out in Milan but he'll be back next week and he'll be ready to start straight away and he will be a great addition to the squad"

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hohoho! Our strongest lineup! Rodgers really wants this one!

    ReplyDelete
  12. We haven't had the squad to be any higher, with the squad we have had came too of the group in Europa, scored 42 goals with most of the season playing with one striker. We are not even fair from CL, we won't be mid table for long. You just shown you don't know anything about football if you say he tactics are rubbish when they are not..... It takes time to build a team.

  13. Sorting things in Italy, he be back on Tuesday

    ReplyDelete
  14. like Allen was? oh and Borini? Brendon Rodgers is a waste of time and for the record so are FSG! we will never get back to the top as long as we have owners who are more concerned about their baseball team. people may not like waht i say but is true...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Gaz, you're entitled to your view, but please do not refer to Rodgers as 'crap'. That is an unwarranted derogatory label. Make your point, but do so in a civil manner. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Strongest possible line-up, given form an availability.
I'm not too confident going into this match. Man City have won four and drawn one out of their last five league matches, keeping four clean sheets, too. Still I hope that we will win.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Are you for real?FSG have put in alot of money into Liverpool.....

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's your opinion, so it is true for you. Other have different opinions and will therefore regard something else as true.

    ReplyDelete
  19. jaimie sorry for the phrase 'crap'... can i be excused if i blame it on culture differences lol...

    ReplyDelete
  20. With Kompany out and Toure in the ACN, there is potential weaknesses for us to exploit. Must admit though, I think City will still be too strong up front for our defence and can't really see any more than a point for us today. (I so hope to be proven wrong so work tomorrow is a little easier!)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't think that anyone one here is happy with being a mid-table team. Think it's ludicrous to even suggest it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Decent line up and probably pretty much the best we could have gone with. Go get 'em boys! Believe!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's not a matter of liking what others say. Your truth is different from others truths. Everyone on here has their own valid truth and each one is as valid as the next. Opinion is not fact.

    ReplyDelete
  24. True ? say's who ? you.. That's called an opinion mate.. and your entitled to it, but it's not the truth !

enjoy the game.. no doubt secretly hoping we are beaten so as to reinforce your perception of 'the truth'.. what amazing intelligent supporters we have indeed..

  25. right now time to watch the reds, COME ON LIVERPOOL!!!!!
i hope you lot are right and giving me hell after the game. something tells me we are gonna be listening to more excuses from the FSG puppet that is Brendon Rodgers! Catch u later guys.. C'Mon Liverpool!!!           RODGERS OUT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was one of those that not only wanted Hodgson out, but never in fact wanted him IN. He never really stamped any of his own character on the team; even granting his short time with us.
Brendan, for me, has definitely done that already, like him or not.
His squad from which to choose has not been great, the new additions are all young and finding their feet.
For those reasons, I will play the 'time' card, for now at least.
Shanks was relatively unproven and had also not won anything upon his introduction and we all know the outcome there.
And finally, no, I am not prepared to be a mid table team either; but I don't see that as being the case for too much longer. I for one DO see progress under BR.

  27. Only if you live in a crap culture.

  28. todays the the day i want to see what sturridge is made of because i dont go along with everyone on here that hes brill thought against arsenal he was poor like i think he will be today ,and sacrificing suarez upfront for him is insane, any way rant over, come on you reds lets at least try and keep the season going, because if we lose today rodgers season imo will have been a lot worse than kennys no cup final no champions league no better

    ReplyDelete
  29. I really, really want to believe.
( Any suggestions of how to part crossed fingers, as mine have stuck in position and I'm gagging for a coffee!?)
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  30.  but thats all part of the plan..if we keep losing we will kid teams in to a false sense of security its a brill plan by a tactical genius

    ReplyDelete
  31. With Spurs and Arsenal winning this weekend and Everton and Chelsea dropping points, we really need all three today stay in that tight group.
    Here's to hope!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes Enrique is the man! So pleased he is back.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There's optimism for you. Yawn

    ReplyDelete
  34. Playing really well so far. We can win this...

    ReplyDelete
  35. That was all too easy for them. We should have done much better about that one.

    ReplyDelete
  36.  spoke to soon Jk ....well we can always bring allen and borini on if we are chasing the game

    ReplyDelete
  37. Another defensive mistake from Agger.

    ReplyDelete
  38. he does one every game.....his positional sense is shocking

    ReplyDelete
  39. What a strike. Man City though will complain because their cheat Dzeko decided to take a nap on the pitch half way through the first half.

    ReplyDelete
  40. great goal sturridge....lets hope rogers keeps him on

    ReplyDelete
  41. I wasn't pleased with Sturrige at Arsenal, too, but the goal he has just scored was a pretty good strike, there probably is no arguing about it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yes, poor marking from Agger, but the way we let them build up ahead of the goal is at least as worrying.

    ReplyDelete
  43. JAMIE CARRAGHER COST A GOAL ...STRURRIDGE SCORES A GREAT GOAL.
NO WAY SHOULD CARRAGHER BE OUT THERE

    ReplyDelete
  44. Carragher gave away the throw in cost as goal can't pass, can't tackle and he's legs have clearly gone. he should not be out the and will cost us the game

    ReplyDelete
  45. So Carra giving a throw away - which happens about 50 times a game for various players - mens he's most culpable for the goal? Are you listening to yourself? Agger is clearly at fault; there's no direct causal link between Carragher conceding a throw in and Dzeko scoring.

Plus your contention that 'he can't pass/tackle' is not accurate in this game. He's been good in the first half, and rarely put a foot wrong. Please provide examples of Carra's alleged bad defending in the first half.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Henderson may get a red card here.

    ReplyDelete
  47. agger was shocking for the goal played them onside and failed to cut the cross out,but saying that carra has to share the lions share of fault for the goal the way he gave that throw in away was diabolical ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Man City look nervous at the back, sturridge looks on fire and a pretty decent 1st half from us minus their goal.  Come on boyz their here for the taking.  Would like to see Sterling come on for Downing.  Johnson is making more forward runs than downing as usual and we need to be careful down our right with Silva. Mistakes at the back again, not sure why we have not brought another CB to freshen things up!!  Come on the reds!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Update: Big black gaping hole swallows us all! Cheer up.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Agger was one of two players playing them onside to be fair.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 54:29 Mins

Who are the Premier League champions? Hmm. Even if we don't win from here I think we've proved a point

    ReplyDelete
  52. He's made fewer mistakes than Lescott on the other side.

    ReplyDelete
  53. And who are to soft for a physical challenge. Think we are standing our ground pretty well while their players go down very easily.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Would like to see  Sterling for Downing

    ReplyDelete
  55. Just saw what you'd written agreed Sterling for Downing

    ReplyDelete
  56. Geeeeeerrrrraaaaaaaarddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. What can you say? We've been waiting for such a goal from Stevie for quite a while now. Hope we can hang on to the lead and add another.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Sturridge has had a great game, while i think Suarez has been wasteful, its great that we now have the luxury of him having an off match. still back him to score the winner though.
Downing and Henderson starting to flourish and show their skill, what a surprise it comes when fans show some faith.

Our passing game has been good today, I enjoy the way we pass it out from the back confidently and assuredly.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Gerrard. Poor season. Drop him!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh my god. Are we cursed or something?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'll risk a ban for this one. Reina, you arsehole. What has this idiot been thinking? He's probably put a lot of money on us not winning.

    ReplyDelete
  62.  another reina gaff....just how long are we gonna put up with joker

    ReplyDelete
  63.  Yes with a Keeper whose way past his shelf life

    ReplyDelete
  64. Reina MUST GO at the end of the Season

    ReplyDelete
  65. surely a substitution is needed?

    ReplyDelete
  66. Take off Reina and bring in another out-field player.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Been sayin for ages reina is a liability, 26 shots at goal for us, 9 for them up to now, we really do need to let this guy go end of season

    ReplyDelete
  68. LOL F**K ME take off the most potent ATTACKER (STURRIDGE)in the game and bring on the CRAB (ALLEN)....LOL *SMH*  Brendan is testing my faith in him

    ReplyDelete
  69. I honestly didn't expect us to match Man City, or even be better than them, but Kudos to outfield players and manager. Reina, thanks for nothing. What was this for? Getting a few millions of your value to get out on a cheap?

    ReplyDelete
  70. A bit more luck and we're well on the way

    ReplyDelete
  71. Pepe once again drops us the points.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not going to make excuses for Luis.....but after playing a full match in FA Cup, then as a winger against Arsenal.....I was expecting him to start looking weaker by the time this game came around.
My hope is he does not play at all vs Spain in the friendly...as Uruguay needs him on form for WCQ anyways and Liverpool even more for the Europa games and EPL games coming, that should be wins, not draws.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Aghhh. Seen the Reina goal again. F**kin horrible

    ReplyDelete
  74. You was right about silly mistakes and Reina.... One a game Pepe strikes again!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yes, agreed. We were the better side today. As I've argued all season: who cares how we get into the CL places this season, as long as we get there, and we're well on the way. Plenty of points to play for, and plenty of positives from the last two games.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Rubbish, Carragher played well.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Reina must be sold at end of season.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Good performance on the whole again. Plenty of positives. Of course result wise it seems that yet again a whole lot of positives have been wiped out (only in terms of score line but we are in a results orientated business) by 1 moment of madness. This time, step forward Mr Pepe Reina, goodness knows what he was doing with his decision making there. Why Pepe? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  79. Reina has GOT to go in the summer, no room for sentiment.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I disagree with that the passing out the back was good. It was ok but quite often this season it just adds pressure on our defence as the opposition presses high up. We do it ok. I wouldn't say it's perfect at the moment

    ReplyDelete
  81. Totally the better team, 33 shots to their 14 but once again let down by a howler, shame that two good performances have only yielded 2 points, everton have got a lot of tough fixtures to come & could be caught but i think spurs will do enough & i cant see us overhauling both chelsea & arsenal as much as id like to believe its possible. We would need a run of about 6 or 7 wins on the spin & think thats unlikely

    ReplyDelete
  82. Pleasesellthatreina6:12 pm, February 03, 2013

Reina and agger yet again costing us three points WHY WHY WHY! We played superbly i just hate reina to death hes so stupid skrtel was already there why the hell he had to get out this is so sick, and agger on first goal again like vs arsenal agger reina must be dropped NOW

    ReplyDelete
  83. Again we were unlucky not to take all 3 points. So much effort put into the match. We owned city on their pitch. More shots, possession, corners, desire but we just don't quite see the game out. They played well and we can all take heart that the team is playing better and better.
I've always liked reina but what was he thinking?! Skrtel had Aguero covered. He was going nowhere really. Skrtel would have tried to hold him up but reina has given him an opportunity by leaving his goal. Aguero is quality and is well capable even from that angle. Unless Reina improves I would put money on Brendan selling him this Summer. Did you see the disbelief on his face after Aguero scored?!
Anyhow, 2 points from two tough away matches is good. We are still in the mix. Spurs and Everton matches will be must win though in the run in.

    ReplyDelete
  84. enough is enough this man is killing us ! rodgers grew a pair of balls and drop REINA this has been goin on for 3 seasons. every big game he fucks up got to see the back of him now. ffs this cant go on with  this clown in goal

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yes he does, replacing him in the summer in my opinion has to be a priority.

    ReplyDelete
  86. LFC 1892-2009 then we died6:25 pm, February 03, 2013

All this Reina bashing is pathetic.Keepers now are told to be on their toes and try to intercept whne possible, also where the ball was played out wide it took an incredible piece of skill to score from the position and angle  Aguero was at.Also against Arsenal i dont blame Reina for any of the goals.Just seems like hes being the scapegoat to me from a lot of fans.I see us building  momentum for a challenge next season as were improving as a team in every game and we are basically using the rest of the season to bed in players and fine tune a style which will hopefully bear fruit next season as any hope for top 4 has gone.

    ReplyDelete
  87. agree m8 he played by far the best he has played for us if not the best i,ve ever seen him play

    ReplyDelete
  88. Agger should have marked Dzeko closer or cover the cross, but mistakes like this happen all of the time. Don't think we will find many, if any, faultless defensive displays if we look at matches up and down the country, at least if both teams attack.

Mistakes like the one Reina made, though, are unforgivable. There's absolutely no need at all to run to the edge of the box in that situation.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Problem is that Jones is worse than Reina. We need two new goalies in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  90. is the best of a bad pair....doesn't say much.

    ReplyDelete
  91. In this case I have no doubt at all that the bashing is justified. There is absolutely no need at all to run there as Skrtel was with Agüero anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  92. drop riena for who? jones isnt better than reina. in the summer reina will be sold and we will get a decent amount for him due to the fact he is are 1st chocie keeper, if he is a bench warmer we will get peanuts.
the BR doubters obviously have short memorys at the begining of the season every one new this was a rebuild season but the team and BR have suprised us by challenging for the top four. summer comes reina and skrtel out and get a top qualitiy keeper and CB in, cover for LB and maybe a better option to downing. YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  93. agree m8 he came out and it was going nowhere then he finished it with a goal ,a goal he would not score again in a hundred attempts

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think we got 2 respectable draws against two top teams in the league. Though I think we were a little unlucky tonight. How the hell did SA put that ball into the net from that angle???

Now, we are 9 points off 4th place with 13 matches to go. Out of these 13 matches, 7 were home games and out of these 7 home games, we will play Everton, Spurs and Chelsea. We still have an outside chance of making the top 4 if we play really well in these 13 matches. I'm not overly optimistic that we can make the top 4 but we do stand a chance, especially after the arrival of DS. He is a good deal at 12 mil pounds and as good as we can get in the Jan window.

We fans must try, not to slag the team off anymore. Instead we must get behind it! It's now the make-or-break point for the team this season. Next on the block, bring on WBA, whip their asses and get a solid revenge for that embarrassing season opening 3-0 loss!

    YNWA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Reina has let us down time after time in the last few seasons, thats whats pathetic!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. they should be reading situations and that situation did not call for his intervention. ridiculous decision on his part. add that to his near post phobia and we have got ourselves a very trustworthy and reliable keeper! i have said before that i respect all the good work he did, but that was a long time ago. i am talking about a time frame within the last 3 seasons now, and i am afraid that he is past his 'sell-by' date.

    ReplyDelete
  97. the only thing reina has over jones is he is better with the ball at his feet .he hasnt done a great deal wrong in the games hes played apart from the rick at oldham time 4 a change

    ReplyDelete
  98. listen m8 reina fault 2 goal at arsenal and 2 goal today .the mans spent

    ReplyDelete
  99. jaimie cannot wait for your next cheat episode lol ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  100. lawrenson is NOT a Liverpool legend.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  102. sky sporst f"ck the manure baised commentators spoilt the game for me ,had to turn the volume off because i nearly put the tv through having to listern to his man ure pant creaming comments

    ReplyDelete
  103. In your opinion. In my opinion, he is.

    ReplyDelete
  104. i complained to espn when that kn*bhead john champion, called luis a cheat. players know their stuff (most of the time) presenters know nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Reina's handling of the ball is also much better than Jones'. When the latter recently spilt the ball in front of the opponent, he had done the same thing twice before in that match, but was very lucky that there was no-one there to take advantage. Reina still makes saves through games, that Jones probably wouldn't make. Reina is a bit better at jumping, too. I have nothing against Jones and wish him all the best. He has never really let us down, but he is not good enough for us. Two new keepers for me in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  106. lol the presenter was an a$$hole, idont think old whisky nose could have been more baised commentating

    ReplyDelete
  107. reina spilled a simple shot at newcastle ended up gettin sent off for butting . the hearts goal at anfield plus his nightmares at the near post.walcots wed todays 2 nd  goal the list is endless he has flogged goals left right and centre for the last 3 seasons remember chealsea in the cl near post went through his legs EVERY BIG GAME he sells us down the river . ok jones might only be short term but reina also with his off the field problems should now be benched

    ReplyDelete
  108. Reina is the lesser of two evils, or to be more precise, the better of two shaky keepers.

    ReplyDelete
  109. The substitutes were appalling today, BR showed poor tactical nous today with the changes he made. The blame for draw lies with him [imo]. We were doing well until the substitutions.

    ReplyDelete
  110. i always turn the sky commentary off. The pundits are useless.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I agree. Not sure how fatigued Enrique was. But to take him off, to play Agger as left back and Skrtel as a left centre-back, positions they have not (or rarely) played this season, makes no sense.

Reina should have done better, but may be he had doubts that Skrtel would adequately deal with Aguero. If you want to protect a lead, surely, you add a defender, or a midfielder, not weaken the defence. Tut, tut.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Overall, great performance just wish we'd cut out all the really silly mistakes. But hey, Rome wasn't built in a day. Hopefully we can build from the last two impressive performances and put a winning streak together.

    ReplyDelete
  113. So winning multiple championships (in a row) along with a European Cup doesn't warrant him having a legend status? Wow, what the hell does then, remember the guy was a defender. Not saying your wrong but am interested in what your criteria is for becoming a legend.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Why, because of his substitution of Sturridge when he's not 100% fit: the same as what was called for by most on here against Man Utd?

I'm sorry, mate, but that comment, to me, tells me that you know very little about football.

Sturridge isn't fully fit, he had a great game, winning the MOM, and was pretty fucked when he came off with a dead leg. Would you rather he was left out there for the full 90 then missed the next couple of games through injury?

    ReplyDelete
  115. on the reina subject ant i think we will have to agree to disagree on this one m8

    ReplyDelete
  116. did u see him play? great defender

    ReplyDelete
  117. a bit better at jumping thats the cause of his off the field probelms!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I didn't know he has off the field problems. What are they?

    ReplyDelete
  119. rumour has it his wife and kids are back in spain .its seems apart from droppin the ball hes been droppin his pants as well

    ReplyDelete

  121. playin away from home

    ReplyDelete
  122. reina called for the ball and didn t make it   not down to skrtel another reina fuck up

    ReplyDelete
  123. Well he managed to out play last years champions, and many other teams. Sure a few things still need sorting, but in general he is doing the right things, and we are getting there

    ReplyDelete
  124. Here, Here matey :-)

    ReplyDelete
  125. Carra played well. He gets way to much stick IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Spot on. Before the game, I would have taken a draw, as City have been in fine form, but better than that was how we played, we were really good. For the last few months we have been getting better and better IMO, and getting Sturridge has made a world of difference to our attack.

Credit to Gerrard to, as he has picked up his game really well since Xmas, and to Hendo, who for me is now a starter in a mid of Lucas, Gerrard, and Hendo, which is massive kudos to Hendo, as not long ago, I think he would have been way down that list. Very alike to Downing, how is starting to perform a lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Agreed, although I think we are too far off to get CL places this season. I hope I`m wrong, but I can`t see spurs slipping up that bad, and then Arsenal too, and Everton. Just one to many teams ahead of us. I can though see us getting fifth.

If we do that, all things considered, I think that would still be a great turnaround and real good progress. If we hit fifth this seaosn, it would mean after are bad start, we did still hit form, and so as we will be settled next season, and every player more used to the system, I reckon fourth will be possible, which is something I didn`t think I would be thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Agreed, pretty much every goal comes from some form of defensive error, be that not marking close enough, or being in the wrong position, as a whole I think Agger did ok, and does most games.

Reinas mistake, was different, as you said.

    ReplyDelete
  129. iam going to stop paying for it and watch it over the net,

    ReplyDelete
  130. First goal: We have so many players back, and to get turned around from the throw in was ridiculous. Poor team defending there. It was either Hendo/Downing who tracked back on the near side, should of let Enrique mark Dzeko and give Agger the space. Multiple errors, not just Agger.

Second goal: If Pepe does not come out, Aguero does not score and it's that simple. Completely shocking.

I hate being radical, I've accused other commenters and JK once of being radical in saying "Carroll out" for example, but I think Reina needs a Downing like chat with Brendan Rodgers. Otherwise if it is he who holds the team back, he may possibly be leaving in the summer.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hey Jason, just wondering who your commentary team was? In Aus we have Fox Sports which is pretty much Sky Sports. I had Peter Drury and a former Scottish player (I forgot who).

We only get in game commentary as we sometimes have our own team of presenters before and after the match.

  133. Yep, if all defenders played perfect games every week, most games would end 0-0. Or 0-1 if Reina was in goal.

  134. Reina? I've never heard about that before. Thought Ashley Cole and Terry were specialists in that field. Maybe Reina should join Chelsea then to pick up a few tricks (or rather to teach them some as, well, I haven't read any rumours regarding Reina being promiscuous).
