Mark Lawrenson recently hailed Swansea City attacker Michu as the Premier League's 'buy of the season', and after downing Chelsea last night with his sixteenth goal of the season, the Spaniard's stock is set to rise even further. Liverpool were constantly linked with a move for Michu during last summer's transfer window, and over the last few weeks, speculation has risen again over the possibility of a potential deal, either in January or next summer.
Swansea boss Michael Laudrup has always insisted that his star player will not be sold, but now, for the first time, he's addmitted that Michu could potentially leave in the summer.
Speaking to reporters after his club's 2-0 victory over Chelsea last night, Laudrup hailed Michu's 'incredible' goalscoring record, and admitted that he 'never expected' him to come in and score so many goals. When asked about Michu's transfer situation, the Dane explained:
"I'm not the one putting the price tag on him. We all know the general economic situation in the world, so there really aren't that many clubs who can buy him. Michu likes it here, so I'm really not afraid that something is going to happen because I'm so sure he will stay with us for the next five or six months. I don't know about the summer. Ask my chairman".
Reading between the lines, this sounds to me like, privately, Laudrup probably believes there is a strong chance that Michu might leave in the summer. Realistically, it's almost a foregone conclusion:
* After paying only £2m for him, Swansea could potentially make an amazing profit, and for a club that's only been out of the Championship for two years, the money could be too hard to turn down.
* Clubs are already circling Michu, and if continues his form until the end of the season, they will be lining up to try and sign him.
* Swansea are clearly a superb team, but Michu will be 27 soon, and entering the prime of his career. As such, if he wants to compete for the big trophies, he'll know that a move to a bigger club is necessary.
* No disrespect to Swansea, but I wouldn't be surprised if Michu sees the Swans as a stepping stone to a bigger club.
In December, Laudrup seemed to suggest that Michu could leave Swansea for £30m. He told The Independent:
"We have the example of what Liverpool paid for Joe Allen, if they have to pay double for Michu there are few clubs who could afford that. Joe went to Liverpool and you know more or less what they paid for him, but a guy who has scored many goals must be worth a lot more, so you work out the figures".
IMO, there is absolutely no chance any club will pay £30 for Michu, even if he's worth it. As Laudrup stated last night, 'everyone knows the general economic situation in the world', and if players like Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Demba Ba can be bought for less than £12m in the current market, there's no way Swansea will get £30m for Michu.
If the Michu leaves, Swansea will probably get between £10-£15m for for him, which would represent an absolutely incredible level of profit.
A few days ago, Liverpool legend John Aldridge tweeted:
"Michu gets better every time I see him. He would look good in a Liverpool shirt"
I'm sure most Liverpool fans would agree.

Borini vs Michu.....Stats say all.
ReplyDeleteI think he would leave for more than £15 million but probably not more than £20.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I dont think we could get him at the moment. In terms of the table Swansea are only just behind us, so he might not see it as a step up to come to us. But if we continued to push this season and got top 5 ish, then maybe.
Yea of course it does.....
ReplyDeleteIf he wants to compete for the big trophys then liverpool isnt the place to go if anywhere in UK Spurs will probabaly be the only team to take him
ReplyDeleteHe's obviously in the form of his life. Should one of those clubs with money to burn get interested in him, Swansea might get 20+m for him.
ReplyDeleteFunny, especially if you consider Michu = Borini + Nuri's loan fee
ReplyDelete"the" Michu? Did they register his name in some language as they did for Zlatan?
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth would Swansea sell Michu for less than Joe Allen? Article like this make me laugh. Swansea don't need the money. They are making a handsome profit at the moment. He has over 2 years left on his contract. It is now worth over 60 million to stay in the Premier League. I think you'd need to start negociations at 25m and work your way up from there.
ReplyDeleteI would like him in the team. BA looks like he will do very well at Chelsea too. I`m guessing we couldn`t compete with Chelsea, hence we we never went for BA, but what a steel of a price that was.
ReplyDeleteIf we had 15mil, I can`t think of many better players at that price right now. However I can`t see us getting him.
What makes me laugh is people who completely ignore reality when insisting that certain players will go for ridiculous fees.
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely no way that Michu will go for more than £15m. Bookmark this post, and when he's sold, you'll see I was right.
Swansea may not need to the money, but when someone offers you profit 7-800% on something, you take it, and Swansea will.
They don't know how long they're going to be in the PL. Yes, they're doing well, but they could easily get relegated in the coming years, and the extra money will come in handy as a buffer just in case things go sour.
SPOT ON. No need to sell him. Doing fine just as we are. Some say punching above our weight. Just goes to show you don't need to spend millions and millions to be competative. Fantastic team ethic and spirit throughout the whole club. THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER.
ReplyDeleteGot to agree with Dai. Why would Swans let him go for anything less than 20 - 25 million. He is competing for a major trophy right now with Swansea and looked three times as good as Torres last night.
ReplyDelete5 million plus joe allen and brendon rogers px that should the trick!!
ReplyDeletepx that should do the trick!!
ReplyDeleteDream on! As Daismith says, the rewards of staying in the Premiership make 20M look quite modest and, apart from the new TV money, don't forget that each place higher in the table is worth around 800K. Swansea already have the money from Allen, Sinclair and Rogers in the bank (they spent only a tiny fraction on transfers and already had a budgeted transfer kitty set aside) and thus do not need to make a short term cash profit. Add to the equation that Swansea now have a realistic route to European football next season (via the Cup) and it is hard to make the case that LFC are senious contenders.
ReplyDeleteToo soon to judge Borini hes barely played
ReplyDeleteSPURS! its 50 years since their last title ! how can you mention spurs in the same breath as liverpool?? think you need to stop drinkin the fluid druid
ReplyDeleteOn your logic Liverpool had better cash in quick on Suarez since you dont know how much longer LFC have left in the prem??
ReplyDeleteForget about history look at the present, Spurs have more chance of winning anything now that LFC have
ReplyDeleteDruid196 u certainly are drugged up fool. Spurs are having their 15mins, wait until bale leaves, we'll see what u can do then. Besides no pint in u finishing top 4, u can't do anything, u get knocked out in the first round.
ReplyDeleteAlso, lets face it, you'll never win the league, Fa cup, not even the league cup let alone the holy grail CL of which LFC have won 5 times, repeat!!!! 5 times!!!!
U bang on about history, if so why is it Fergy wants to beat all LFCs trophy records u idddddiiiottt!!!!1
jaimie why would they sell him for less than allen ,he scores goals ,if we tried to sign him they would laugh at us if we offered less than we did for allen, any way don,t think hes played for rodgers before so its a none starter
ReplyDeleteThat theory doesn`t work, in your example then all Keepers should be the cheapest players on the pitch.
ReplyDeleteits just putting the allen transfer into prospective ,if you pay someone 15 million for a mini, they are bound to want more for a ferrari
ReplyDeleteas much as it pains me to say it your right spurs have moved past lfc along with other clubs
ReplyDeleteTell you one think he won't be signing for Liverpool, because at the end of the day you ain't a big club anymore!!! (Swans fan)
ReplyDeletemaybe not but still bigger than swansea will ever be in your wildest dreams
ReplyDeleteChampions league... Spurs are more likely right now to get that than we are.
ReplyDeleteYou cant compare the two . Liverpool overpaid for Allen . I am sure Swansea couldnt believe their luck when Liverpool paid 15 million pounds for Allen . Other clubs will use it as a yardstick to evaluate Michu's price.
ReplyDeleteLaudrup is just doing what any good manager should do . That is talk up the price of his players . Not as Brendan does with his ' you do not fit int my syle of play or plans. ' Other clubs will laugh their way to the bank with Brendan's cluelessness about how to get the best price for the players he intends selling.
True that. Although as we all know one transfer to the next, never works on logic. Logically you are right, but each transfer is more about what a club wants, and what other clubs are willing to pay.
ReplyDeleteI don`t think Allen is that bad, but do think 15mil was to much. 8mil would have been about right to me.
That will depend on the player surely? If he is happy to stay at Swansea, then sure the price would be high, but lets say Man Utd came in with a offer of 12mil. No matter how much Swansea wanted more, or to keep him, if he forces his hand he will get the move. No team wants to keep players who want to move on. If the player feels his dream move is being stopped, and hands in a transfer request etc, he will get it.
ReplyDeleteI don`t agree with it, but that is just how it is.
Ha, ha, aint a big club anymore? Swansea havin an ok season & all of a sudden their fans think they can slate one of world footballs giants, sure, weve not been as successful as previously but even in the last decade or so weve won trophies that swans fans will only dream off, when the bubble bursts at swansea like the last time you were in the old first division you,ll be back to obscurity, we,ll always be a monster club, idiot!
ReplyDeleteActually Liverpool are a massive club still. You seem to have confused size of a club with league position.
ReplyDeleteLiverpool dispite having a poor few years, are still one of the Biggest clubs in the world.
Just like Rangers are still a big club, dispite being moved to the bottom tiers in Scotland.
If you seriously think Liverpool aren`t a big club, then I`m guessing you are just on the wind up.
Jason, as I have seen a lot of your posts, where you aint too happy with who we have signed etc, what do you make of the link to us putting in a 10mil bid for Moussa Sow?
ReplyDeleteHe someone you would like?
Note: It is prob just a rumor, and no truth in it, but as a few places have been reporting on it I thought I would ask.
Admit mistake and than buy a big fish from a small pond for immense amount of money and put him under biggest pressure of his career? Noooo...
ReplyDeleteI think the real question is what other competition could we have to sign him?
ReplyDeleteIf we don't make the Champions League this year, we would have to overpay to keep him away from a top 4 club, and that includes the transfer fee and the wages, along with promising him playing time. I just can't see FSG expanding their checkbook if we don't make Champions League.I think both Jaimie and Jason are right in their respective arguments but with a twist.Jason is right in that we paid 15m for Allen and Michu has clearly outperformed him this year, so Swansea could put the screws to us in that regard. If we paid one price for Allen and Michu is considered significantly better, why wouldn't we pay more for Michu. But Jaimie is also right in that there's a possibility that Michu won't go for more than 15m. The problem is that I don't think Swansea would sell him to us for 15m. The only way they would is if there are no other bidders, and I can't believe that would be the case.
It's quite simple actually; competition drives up the price. If I remember correctly, we didn't have much competition for Joe Allen or for Borini. In fact the Borini hold up was mainly due to his complicated contract with two different teams.
The two guys we had competition for were Dempsey and Gylfi and we missed out on both... ironically to Spurs, which furthers Jason's point in his other post.
This thread makes me realise how much LFC have over spent on players in the last couple of years. FSG have stumped up a fair amount of money and its pretty much gone down the drain.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with Aldridge but not for 30 million!
ReplyDeleteAllens fee was unique and cant be used as a marker...hes younger....he had a buyout clause...it was there previous manager bidding ....it was liverpool ( mugs ) yadayadayada Allen was always a 5 to 10 million player no more
ReplyDeleteif players where on ebay we would bid against ourselves....all the players we buy no one is after yet we go into a bidding war
ReplyDeleteid swap borini and allen for him
ReplyDeleteRogers talks players down......how does that work
ReplyDeleteits gone down the drain period.........
ReplyDeletebecause they are a feeder club....its how they survive
ReplyDeletebecause next year his form might drop and hell only have a year left.listen clubs like swansea buy low sell big when they get the chance......hell be going ,bank on it there is no way they will let his contract run
ReplyDeletethats not saying much.........
ReplyDeletethe thing is oscar when he has played hes barely played....11m down the pan
ReplyDeleteValid Point. It certainly seems to be the case for whatever reason
ReplyDelete'Swansea don't need the money'.. now who's making us laugh now ??
ReplyDeleteI reckon if current form continues to the end of the season then Michu could go for 20 million,IMO.
You seriously suggesting swansea could turn that down ? Funds that could go towards strenghtining the squad and club in an effort to cement their place in the PL .. while no garuntee of course, it would drastically imrove their chances.
Since the inception of the PL 7 teams have been ever present and never relegated.. 45 teams have competed in the PL in that time, meaning a staggering 38 clubs(!!!!) have had a bite of the cherry in that time .. and money was the number one reason for their taste of it and certainly the the number one reason they couldn't maintain it.
If Swansea don't want to become the next Swindon, Hull , Bradford etc they will almost certainly have to sell Michu at anywhere near that price (circa 20 mil)
Sugessting otherwise is funny ..
Oh please, no more one or half season wonder. I've tried hard enough to figure out the crap of those genius did to pay 35 mil pounds for AC, a young unproven player that scored only 14 goals in 33 EPL games and put him on a 80 grand weekly wage. 30 mil pounds for Michu? I have very serious reservations even at half that price. For Joe Allen, he is not a bad player, rather obviously, but how much better is he compared to Sahin? That should make me think long and hard. Time to burn cash for LFC, I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteLove the comment, If he wants to compete for the big trophies.... why would he join Liverpool then
ReplyDeleteObvious wind up Iam a Swans fan and Liverpool are a huge club but what i will say is swansea are getting bigger with tv coverage foreign interest and all that stuff.
ReplyDeleteBecause when a big club comes along, he will want to leave. That's why they'll sell him. If no one offers remotely close to 25 million, which no one in their right mind will, they will have to settle for less. If they don't, he'll throw his toys out of the pram and go on strike, not show up for training etc
ReplyDeleteDai Ponies?
ReplyDeleteno not really (m sow) snieder would be good but cannot see that happening,i,am not saying all rodgers signing are crap, but they do not represent value for money,if borrini ,sturridge and allen had been 6to8 million as squad players they would be fine, but there supposed to be our saviours, and i do not think they will be up to it
ReplyDeleteThrowing in an extra pony (£50) won't cut it I'm afraid! May just about cover the Leprechaun's liquid lunch though!
ReplyDelete
