The plot thickens: LFC make €10m bid for Wesley Sneijder. Exciting news...?

In his pre-Norwich press conference yesterday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers suggested that he couldn't see the Reds making a move for Inter Milan star Wesley Sneijder, but reports in Italy today claim that the club has put in an offer for the Dutch international. Could Liverpool's denial of the deal simply be smoke and mirrors?

According to TMW, Liverpool put in a €10m bid for Sneijder last night - the same amount offered by Galatasaray and accepted by Inter - and negotiations with the Italian club are continuing.

When asked yesterday whether Liverpool were trying to sign Sneijder, Rodgers told Reporters:

"You could probably rattle off about twenty names and the answer would be the same. The club has been linked with a whole host of players, so no, I couldn't see that happening".

There are wild rumours that Sneijder wants ridiculously high wages, but in an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzeta Dello Sport, the man himself claimed that his next move is not about money, and slammed the Inter for pressuring him over the decision:

"This is not about the money. I do not want to rush anything, and I don't like it how Inter have put pressure on me. I am almost being forced to make a rushed decision about my future at a crucial moment in my life. I feel that I do not deserve to be pressured like this."

Irrespective of his past history, if Liverpool signed a player like Sneijder, it would be a massive statement of intent, and a great transfer coup for the club. Yes, there are questions about his fitness, and his effectiveness over the last couple of years, but Sneijder has proved himself to be a top class player, and it would be massively exciting to see him in a Liverpool shirt.

Ian Ayre claimed this week that Liverpool can still attract the world's best players.

PROVE IT.

  4. I'm not usually an advocate of signing big name players but this fella is exactly what we are missing at the moment.

  5. Why would Wesley take such a big step backwards by moving and then also take a wage cut?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Perhaps he just wants a new challenge?

  7. My doubts about Allen have grown over the season.  I love his ability to make accurate passes. However, those passes are almost totally without risk and never seem to be made to create an opportunity.  He seems to be more concerned with not making a mistake.  I contrast that with Gerrard who is constantly looking to capitalize on an attacking possibility.  Gerrard assesses and accepts the risks...and still makes an accurate pass.  I wish Allen would do more of that.  I believe Snejder to be more like Gerrard.  I would alternate Gerrard and Snejder in the same position in order to keep them healthy and keep Allen in the game as a holding mid-fielder.

  8. come on rodgers,we are desparate for some quality, its a no brainer , what if gerrard gets injured? we have nothing creative and if he dosnt imagine them together mouthwatering

  9. Great player, BUT! Can't see him taking such a massive hit in wages unless he has a liver bird tattooed on his chest, which I don't think he does.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I am hoping and praying that this is true. Some say he isn't the player he was but I don't buy into that. I reckon he just needs a new club were he feels wanted and I am sure he would be back to his best before long. Hoping to pick up the Sunday paper with a big smile on my face.

  13. To be honest the fact that Tottenham are not sniffing around him or Manchester United is strange to say the least.

Call me cynical, but why aren't other serious teams in for him ?

Don't you find it a little strange ?

  14. I don't see how some Italian news source has any more validity than the numerous English news sources who have printed the same unfounded story. Now I have no questions about Sneijder's fitness nor his ability. What I can't see though is that he would refuse to take a wage cut at Inter only for him to do the very same to come to us. On top of that, Sneijder has a reputation in Holland for being an idiot in the dressing room on international duty so I can't see him fitting in at LFC where the likes of Gerrard and Carragher would not take any crap from him.

  15.  jaimie, something is off about this ...he'd get into better squads than ours.Ferguson is not sniffing around after he was interested and never really found a alternative?...something stinks about this whole thing

  16. once again jaimie i reply to your post in what i think was a trueful way, once again you do not imo give me a suffiecent answer,  on to the subject in hand ,sniejder would be a statement of intent and even thou i feel champions league football is beyond us this season (even if he signs)it would put the club in a lot stronger position whenit comes to the next transfer window as it would show other players that lfc have the ambition to get back amongst europes elite

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've got a feeling that we are going to sign him. This would be a fantastic signing that would give the club a massive lift. I see him I the same way that Van der Vaart had an impact for Spurs.

  18. anyone see John Henry's twitter response to being asked about Sneijder? - he replied 'im broke' - now clearly its either a drunken response, he's been hacked, or he is sick of LFC fans constant berating him on this media site. Could possibly be a simple photoshop from a Man U fan as well. Deleted shortly after posting apparently but here is the link:

  19. maybe mr ayre knows something rodgers dose not i found is quote that we can compete with anybody when it comes to the top players laughable and quite frankly a dam right stupid thing to say,but maybe he said it knowing he had a ace up his sleeve,if we are going to sign him lets get it wrapped up quick before another club muscles in

    ReplyDelete
  20. why not gerrard and sniejder together lucas in the holding position

    ReplyDelete
  21. We've just got rid of one Joe Cole... I just hope we're not gonna end up with another one.

  23. Come on the reds! So frequently has the club shot itself in the foot recently... it's a time for this to stop, a time to sign class! Wes Sneijder must take that pay-cut. It will be he best move of his career. These players are all more than rich enough, greed is what is wrong with the world... play for a cause, not for the pay-cheque!

Seriously, if I had the chance and was good enough, I'd play for LFC for nothing! I'm sure most of us would... All Wesley has to do is take a pay cut to play for one of the greatest clubs in the world historically!

    Really it's a no-brainer!

    ReplyDelete
  24. whos to say there not other clubs try and keep thee transfer targets quite untill the deal is done

I think old Wes can take the pay cut

  27. no no no no no no

we do not need another pensioner past his best who wants to cash in for his retirement.

we should be chasing young hungry talent like isco.

I agree though - The reality is football has succumb to money. Money is power, and in football it's no different, unfortunately.

  29. Jason, Jason....That line-up doesn't include Allen, therefore you will never see it in real life ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'll reserve my assessment on how good a signing Snijder may be until he has delivered week in, week out for us for quite a while. I mean, should we sign him, given how experienced and, according to some "fantastic" he STILL is, he surely will hit the ground running.

And I still wonder why the only two clubs that seem to be interested in him are us and Galatasaray. How could that be if he still is that good?

    ReplyDelete
  31. sniejder is in a different class to cole, coles greatness was only made by the british press as is a case with most british players

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's exactly what I try to point out since we've been linked with him.

    ReplyDelete
  33. we have plenty of young players and sniejder is only 27 or 28 just coming into his prime,i would be nice to sign isco as well but one step at a time

    ReplyDelete
  34. i was going to give allen a free role, were he could play were he wanted its what is talent is crying out for

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'll keep saying it until proven otherwise - signing Sneijder would be a big statement, but wouldn't result in a big improvement in our playing fortunes.

We are in desperate need of more goalscorers and ball-winners, not more passers. (Unless we really are looking to just emulate the modern Arsenal, with all the inherent failures in their team...)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Iniesta and xavi -esque....mouth watering.

    ReplyDelete
  37. with gerrard and sniejder doing the donkey work for him and giving him the ball where ever possible so he can deliverhis trademark killer passes ;-)lol i think ive finally shot through

  43. We have too many young and hungry talents at LFC...but they "didn't eat when we served them food".still wondering what they are hungry for...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Lol the killer pass being sideways or backwards

    ReplyDelete
  45. Haha, pensioner? Have you even consider this guy's talent? Compared to Sterling, Borini, Allen?

I actually wouldnt mind if we paid him a big wage. He's a HUGE talent STILL!!! And, he's a HUGE name. It would be totally against what alot of fans have been saying about Liverpool's progression in the sense that we, currently could NOT attract any big name players.

In farness, if he is still half at his his best, he would easily be worth the money at this moment in time. IMO

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't it's strange at all. As Patrick said below, Spurs and Man U didn't go for Demba Ba. They also didn't go in for Podolski, Giroud, Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Torres, even Suarez etc. Doesn't mean much IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  47.  Jason it's CANNON LAW THUS:

a)Where Liverpool Bideth for quality players..Tottenham will follow.
b)When Liverpool are in advanced stages of securing a player Tottenham MUST AND WILL interfere with a counter offer

    ReplyDelete
  48. We can take a cue from the number of clubs who were interested in ...suarez in 2010 ...michu , dzeko and Ba .

    ReplyDelete
  49. Unless Ferguson is pulling another evil master-stroke in embarrassing LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Typical LFC negotiating skills again. Apparently the galatasaray bid that was accepted was 7.5m euros [according to unal aysal galatasaray president] so we put in an extra 2.5m sweetner?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Money and greed will be the death of us all...

But Wes Sneijeder mustn't be a bastage!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I counted 8 midfielders at Man u .whom I would rate minimum 7/10....and counted 3 In Liverpool...can u believe that united made 10 changes to the side that beat us at OT when they met westham....we cant even make 4 and win a game. SMH ....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good point. Last week, when we were linked with players only very few had heard of, some one here argued that they must be poor because only Wigan/Southampton/'any club that someone considers much smaller than us' were interested in signing them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sure isn't it still worth it? Why not add the sweetner? A bit extra for a player with ALOT extra, i say.

    ReplyDelete
  55. i would over the moon if we signed isco........we can all dream!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think it is strange. But I think the main apprehension is with respect to his wage demands. Nevertheless, Liverpool have to make their own assessment of the situation and decide what is best. We have only one top quality midfielder in Gerrard, who is ageing. The rest are young, learning their trade. Who else apart from Gerrard can they learn from? This is the only positive Jaimie left out of his last paragraph.

Hopefully Gerrard's (and Rodgers') recent statement regarding the need for greater experience within our ranks will put pressure on the ownership to push for a deal. They could try and circumvent the high wage demands by offering him a signing-on bonus.

The acquisition of a player of Sneidjer's reputation will once again turn the world's eyes toward Liverpool for footballing reasons. It would be a statement that we can really attract the world's best, rather than having to take IA's word for it. It could even attract more top players. One or two of these types of acquisitions could change Liverpool's fortunes.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Sorry Thepodger 77,
I meant as a reply to Mfimfi
Surely my opinion is in agreement with you

    ReplyDelete
  64. If Sneidjer comes, we would need our strongest team on the field which would be Gerrard and him playing together. Lucas behind. Allen, bench.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Man united got their man in kagawa earlier this season
Plus, ferguson sees much promise in cleverly
That means their interest has cooled in sneijder, at least for the time being

    ReplyDelete
  66. While I have stated a few times, I don`t think he is as good as he was, and he seems more injury prone now. If we could get him on decent wages, he would still be a step up from what we have, and also maybe give a little lift in terms of ambition. I have seen a lot of fans appearing down hearted about our signings of late, so that lift might just be worth the cash. Altough I don`t know why we would offer anymore than what Gala have offered, which is reported to be 6. something mil. If we offered the same cash, I`m sure Snejider would pick us over Gala, not being disrespectful to Gala, but the Turkish league just aint the Prem league.

No one really knows if he will work out, just like any deal, but at least we could feel the club are showing a good level of intent, this can also help with future signings, as all players would prefer to join a club which shows it will at least try to compete.

    ReplyDelete
  67. True, but the we never really know the number of clubs interesting in any one player.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I hope for the same but history suggests otherwise!

  69. Hi all - quick questions: Have anyone experienced any problems with pop-ups appearing on the site and redirecting you elsewhere? I hate popups, and there are none on the site, but if this is happening, then there could be a glitch somewhere. Cheers. JK

  70. Allen has warranted a drop... Surely BR must see this.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I don`t think he has been as good as he was over the last two years, so there is a chance that the top elite clubs right now don`t view him as a upgrade on what they already have. Were as for us, he may well be. When the story first broke, and I heard all about his wages, I thought to myself "no way", esp as his last few years don`t seem to have gone as well. That though has changed a bit in my mind, as I think he could well be a upgrade on what we currently have, and also the fact he was great, means maybe he can become great again, and maybe his drop in form is related to other issues, like his injuries, and falling out with Inter. Sometimes a fresh start is all a player needs.

    ReplyDelete
  72. And I used to think we only agreed on how good South Park is! You have an honesty in your comments that are to be admired. Good point and agree totally......Not on the Jaimie thing as I have no idea what that's about!    :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. BR doesn't WANT see it he'll play this weekend

    ReplyDelete
  74. I always think, there is so much more to why clubs go in for players. The BA thing is a classic example. I have heard a few people say, we should have signed him in Jan as he was cheap, but I pose the question, what if BA has said Chelsea was the only team he wanted to go too? Or rather why would he pick us over them right now?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Jaimie no I have installed ADBLOCK in web browser.. I urge people not to use Internet Explorer from Microsoft riddles with holes. Use Firefox ,Opera  or Chrome to avoid these issues and install ADBLOCK in the ADD ONS for the browser. Otherwise you'll get a bunch of e-mails, popups and e-mails offering referring you to your undercarriage regions and dubious porn....

    ReplyDelete
  76. I honestly believe Rodgers would welcome this player if FSG were to purchase him. I don't think it's him saying he doesn't want Sneidjer, but more can we afford to do this deal financially. That's the part the owners must deal with. As Jaimie's article states, "Ian Ayre claimed this week that Liverpool could still attract the world's best players"   PROVE IT  indeed......

    ReplyDelete
  77. At this point, that is my only reservation.  Why are there only two clubs after him if this is such a steal?

Easy initial answer is the wage issue, but if he is saying that he would take a cut to leave, then why wouldn't more teams get involved.

On the surface, this seems pretty cut and dry.  Unfortunately, I can't help but think that if it sounds too good to be true, it because it probably is too good to be true.

  81. I reckon that Sneijder is using the 'money is not an issue' thing as a last ditch attempt to get signed by one of the currently biggest clubs, Barca, Real Madrid, Man Utd, but if none of those put in an offer, he would have to choose a second tier club, Arsenal, Chelsea, Munich. Does Liverpool fit into the category of 'tier 2'? I think Galatasary would be below Liverpool in that pecking order, 3rd or 4th tier so it's very possible unless he does the unthinkable and join Southampton, we are in with a chance.

Sorry for the using of the word 'tier' here. Please choose your own adjective.

I'd still alternate them to keep them healthy...but I like Lucas over Allen and I'd like Sturridge and Suarez to be on the field at the same time...this week would be nice.  If only one striker were on, then I'd go with both Sneijder and Gerrard...one at attacking MF and the other feeding/feeding off the lone striker.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  112. I like Lucas over Allen.  I would really like Suarez and Sturridge starting on the field together.  If that happens I would still alternate Sneijder and Gerrard and use Lucas as the holder. If we only go with 1 striker then I'd play both Gerrard (just behind the striker) and Sneijder (the pure attacking MF)...or vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  113. dream on, this is bull%hit to appease the silly fans. We didnt even need to buy Allen as we alraedy had players who did fvck all all day. Rogers has blagged his way into anfield and now is blagging us on a daily basis. And WTF is recycling the ball more blagging.

    ReplyDelete
  114. i would still play them both gerrard could go out wide in midfield its not as if we have any outstanding midfielders, who are garaunteed a start,so there as got to be room for both

    ReplyDelete
  115. well said buddy, complet. agree with you regarding the difference between Allen and Gerard! so far i havent seen anything good from Allen in that role...

    ReplyDelete
  116. No problem, will do.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Except he's paid even more, reputed to be good when the team is built around him, out of form and fitness, oversized ego, could end up being a disruptive influence in the dressing room. And would cost us a fortune. Really not convinced.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Jason, that is the best thing you have ever said!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Based upon what Ian Ayre said about the performance-based contracts the team is trying to steer towards, there may be some semblance of hope that a deal for Sneijder can be worked out.

One way around the wage issue could be performance-based pay.  Granted, a player wants guarantees, but perhaps this could be some sort of happy medium for all parties.  Inter gets rid of their guy. LFC pays a cut rate price, and if Sneijder plays well, he will be paid accordingly.

    I know, I know... it's still a long shot.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Neither did Andy Cole & Sheringham but they still played for the team.

Plus bring along a winning mentality that we lack so badly at the moment. The only time we become determined to win games is when we have already lost them.

Maybe 4th from 4th will be secured if he comes on board.

    ReplyDelete
  123. i dont think its a case of winning mentality ,imo in the big games rodgers starts off to defencsive and only starts to play attacking football when the game is lost ,why wait till were losing ,we should be at them from the start they expect you to sit back and soak up the pressure, but if you attack them from the start it normally terrifies them because it comfounds there game plan,

    ReplyDelete
  124. Greg | Liverpool Kopites10:48 am, January 19, 2013

I guess that's what I kinda meant. Teams who win go for the game from the off, they don't wait for things to happen. BR does not have this, most of our players also do not. Of course, we need a good defence as the foundation but going for the jugular doesn't mean being negligent in that department - it just means putting your foot down from the start and showing the other team who's boss and we mean business. Like you said too, terrifies them and puts them off!

We can pass the ball from one end to the other and back again but if we don't apply pressure on the other teams' goal and put the ball in the net, what use is majority ball possession and 99% passing accuracy.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Are Liverpool really a better club than Inter Milan right now - Inter have had far more success in the last 10 years. If he doesent want to take a pay cut to stay he wont be taking one for a club who might not qualify for CL in next 5 years.

    ReplyDelete

  127. He is the type of player we need but it probably won't be him or anyone else in this window.

  128. stay at a club who won't play you and are passed their prime since mourinho left or play for one of the most passionately supported clubs, be part of its' folklore and help restore and continue its' former glories?

I know what I'd choose... maybe that's just me? Maybe I'm biased...

  131. i think wesley would take a pay cut SA-Red, but will his agent , i think our club are working to bring him in , all the noise going around the football world about this saga is good as it promotes lfc and marketing sneijder incase we do buy him then the replica shirt with his name on the back will pay most of his earnings , our club then can earn, as at least 4th place is looking possible also the intent to win is there by fsg, i watch highlights on match of the day last night and this morning, from what i saw and the atmospher about the place , also listening to tv pundits its looking good , people can and will say , yes but! it was only norwich , i know, not to long ago the so-called little teams like norwich fulham , sunderland, west brom , wigan, everton , and so on , would take at least a point from anfield if we were lucky!!! i think with team confidence growing and team building cemented we'll be ok , i really think our home crowd especially the KOP , need to help   by rawing the lads on get right hehind the team especailly against the so-called lesser teams , by this, i believe most who visit will crumble just like in the 70's, the fans need to make anfield a not nice place to visit , like it is for united and their lesser team everton
