Late deal: Prem club triggers £3.5m star's buyout clause. Could it be LFC...?

Liverpool's lack of strength and athleticism in the centre of midfield has cost the club dearly this season, and with Lucas the only dedicated defensive midfielder at Anfield, the Reds could definitely benefit from another player challenging for the position. In recent weeks, the club has inexplicably ignored the opportunity to sign the likes of Yann M'Vila and Moussa Sissoko, but West Ham's Mohamed Diame is still available, and according to reports, an unnamed Premier League club has just put in a bid and triggered his release clause. Could it be LFC...?

An hour ago, Sky Sports reported:

"West Ham have had a bid from a Premier League club for Mo Diame triggering his release clause".

Diame has been linked with a move to Anfield several times over the last three months, so it's not too far-fetched to speculate that Liverpool could be the club in question.

Prior to having his contract terminated, Kenny Dalgish had pinpointed Diame as a possible free transfer. Liverpool's interest ended when Dalglish left, and the 24-year admitted recently that he was 'sad' to miss out on the move. He told the Liverpool Echo:

“I met with Kenny Dalglish and we talked about next season [2012-2013], but God decided to finish this situation. It is true I was very sad in my head as I was thinking to go there”

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp is impressed with Diame, and after watching him dominate Chelsea's midfield during West Ham's recent 3-1 victory over the Blues, he wrote:

"I like the look of Mohamed Diame at West Ham; he’s a cross between Patrick Vieira and Yaya Toure. He overpowered Chelsea’s midfield on Saturday. Can West Ham keep him? He came on a free and has an agreed get-out clause. There will be lots of interest now".

West Ham legend Trevor Brooking is also a big fan of the Senegalese international, and he praised the midfielder to the hilt in an interview on Monday. He raved:

“The lad has been a revelation for us. I think Sam thought he was a bit tired because he’s had some hard games recently, but Diame has been fantastic. He’s been the player of the season really.”

Liverpool's failure to address the physical weakness at the heart of the club's midfield is massively concerning; I personally just cannot undertand why Rodgers didn't go for Sissoko, who cost a ridiculously cheap £2.2m. It's maddedning!

There's still time for redemption though, and if the club could pull the signing of Diame, it would cap an exceptionally positive transfer window. Liverpool *should* be in for him, and if the club isn't, serious questions need to be asked (IMO).

£3.5m - a no-brainer, surely?

Fingers crossed!

EDIT: 22:44 - Sky Sports' Chief Reporter Tweets:

"West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan tells us No (Diame) bid today from any club, let alone one which invokes his release clause."

  1. I hope it's us but it's very very unlikely.

  2. Diame would need to get a lot better technically to be of Yaya Toure/Viera calibre.
His pace and power is an equaliser though and at least allows him to dominate games as much as any of our current central midfielders, not named Gerrard

    I don't think it's us.... I think it's either arsenal or spurs...

  5. On another note apparently we were in for Isaac Cuenca of Barcelona- another exceptionally talent of their academy but he's chosen Ajax on loan

  6. That doesn't really mean anything. Clubs rarely confirm bids publicly prior to transfers going through.

  7. Our money men will be long gone home and tucked up in bed by now - no way LFC are making any bids so late in the day

  8.  i hope so .....but cant see it happening........like ive said before if he signs this type of player in midfield it an admission that Allen doesn't fit the bill and all this crap about tika taka is just that crap....we all know the prem isn't Spain and you need certain types of players or you get bullied out of games but rogers and his ego wont admit it....Lucas as much as i like him is shit at the moment and Gerrard hasn't the discipline or legs anymore so signing this guy is a no brainier...that the problem rogers has no brain

  9.  its wishful thinking jaimie ive heard rogers is trying to coax dennis wise and  sammy lee out of retirment

  10. I hope it's liverpool. but suspect not. And we could have had him on a free! Ayres???

  11. Dream on Micky Mousers....

  12. Guess it's Arsenal, though it would be great if it was us. That's a very late bid indeed.

  13. hes got size and pace so hes no use to rogers in midfield

  14. I think it would rather be an admission that Lucas isn't fully fit and has been injured quite a lot recently as Diamé plays in his position, and not Allen's. And I even figured that one out without checking any statistics.

  15. We had a chance to sign him for free in the summer and we opted to go for joe Allen for £15mill whom has no role in the midfield. I have no idea what he specialises in apart from passing and ball retention and the last time I checked you needed these attributes to be a pro footballer...

    Henderson>Allen

Borini does not look like he's going to cut it at liverpool, he's settled but he doesn't look confident and doesn't have the ability to make a difference up front. All he's got is good runs. £11?

Sahin was an expensive loan who we beat off arsenal for but apparently it didnt work out for him because of injury...yet he was fine when he left and recently played for bourossia Dortmund. He scored 3 goals and had a few assists in 12 games? Does not one else find this odd

Assaidi has looked good everytime we have played him and we bought him for a pretty low fee but why isn't BR using him?

The summer was basically a waste of money and time. I like the additions made in January but with all the comments fsg and Ian ayre have made surely Mohammed diame is there for the taking for £3.5mill. Unless we literally can't afforded him because its not due to our 'transfer policy' that's for sure. Oldham game highlighted exactly what we needed.

  16. heard he is going to spurs, its only the fans that sign at liverpool

  17. i forgot allen plays the non defensive non attacking role...what a silly billy i am

  18. being able to pass the ball 5 yards is a skill ill have you know.....anyone can beat 3 players and score from the edge of the box

  19. hes to much of a bargain for us like sussoko at newcastle....where gonna wait till leon britton is available and bid 20 million

  20. You aint expecting us to sign someone now are you? 10 mins to go its impossible to get somebody so we gotta be happy with those two we got, what can you do still no class striker at lfc whom we need badly

  21. Sometimes I think we may of been better if we still had Dalglish in charge . He wanted to sign Walcott and Diame and both those players are playing well this season

  22. aaaaaand the window shuts.

  23. Although I also want Ince, and a DM or Center back, I`m pretty happy with this window. I know things are still a bit up and down for us right now, but adding Sturridge and Coutinho has made me smile. We look so much better already in attack, and with Coutinho to come in still, things can only get better. The pace, and skill and trickery up front between Sturridge, Coutinho, Suarez and Sterling (plus other players, and different positions for each one etc) is going to cause a lot of teams a few problems. Before it was always just a case of mark Suarez (if you can) and you took away our goal threat. Now though the defenders will have to try and contend with three fast, skilled players, which will also open up more spaces not only for each other, but also for our mids. So hopefully goals will start coming from all over the pitch.

I`m hoping in the summer we then focus on the defence. Once that is sorted, I actually see a good team. Also one that in theory (barring injuries and sales) has a front line which could play for us for another 5/10 years without needed even one more player added, due to there age. That right there is a great thing.

  24. i think that all the time!!

  25. we need to stop overrating agger, he and reina cost us dearly this season...we desperately need to tighten up our defense..

  26. Pardew stated after the villa match that without sissoko newcastle wouldnt have won that game, it is maddening that most fans can clearly see we need strength & energy in midfield and there are were some bargains to be picked up, sadly the millions blown on borini & allen look to have been utterly wasted

  27. I'm 100% with you Jamie. I'llstart with saying I dont think we made the offer...i personally dont think BR sees the issue not having another dm could pose for the team. On the subject of getting a DM this window, I've been a broken record. The moussa signing was a no-brainer for us as Jamie explained (and ive mentioned several times on this site). I'm upset that we didnt get him, but Im more than shocked that a guy with no scouting experience (in myself) can see what a great deal sissoko would be but BR with a scouting team cant. Instead we get another attacking minded player who's carrying an injury and has yet to live up to his potential. I'm not saying im not welcoming the brazilian, I'm just saying our priority should have been re-enforcing the defensive side of our game first. I just hope we dont rue this missed chance during the season and lucas stays fit and doesnt get complacent with no direct competition for his place.

  28. You just said it Jaimie, its a no brainer. However there is not much of that in our Saleman manager.

  29. DM position has been lacking since Lucas got injured. Why has Buck ignored and not bring in some cover. This should have been sorted out last summer.
I guess this will not be addressed this window either. Extremely disappointing.

  30. Your sarcasm is amusing :D

Yeah, we should have got Diamé. Lucas is far from his best at the time being... I thought he was  transparent against Arsenal... One of the reasons Arsenal overpowered and trampled on us for a good period of the 2nd half...

People used to critise Hendo for his side/back passes... But he offers much more now... His runs are superb... His decision making and final pass will improve with time...

As for allen, i expected his long passing to be good... But he hasnt got a long pass on him... He has to learn from Gerrard... And he is tiny, he gets drowned in the match :P

I want a big strong powerhouse in the midfield... Not a dwarfy coward! :/

  31. I suggest that next season LFC must sign in 1 more Holding ball or Centre Denfensive Midfielder.Moussa Sissoko, Yann M'villa and Lucas Biglia already miss out to anothers clubs but we still have many option can searching in the market of players. Please sign the players who not only tough protect the fortress but able to assist and score many goal. That will reduce burden goal scoring for foward players.Lucas Leiva has small size body and some times so hard to tackle down players who more bigger than him.Maybe it is times to pursuit spain stars to join LFC....... Benat Extrebarria. He is new Xabi Alonso and still young to get sign him. I like too see Sebastian Coates or Jonjo Shelvey can replace for Lucas Leiva position during he is injured.

  32. Diakite will be a Liverpool player on a free in the summer, Liverpool would not pay a transfer when we could sign him then, kind of makes sense!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Liverpool don't do talented cheap players!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know a few guys who wanted to sign Messi, Agüero, Gary Cahill in addition to Walcott and Diamé. We can make one of them our manager as they wanted to sign those class players.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nothing wrong with Agger but Reina and Skrtel are poor.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Then who is Assaidi?

    ReplyDelete
  37. A very good player who never plays, WHY????

    ReplyDelete
  38.  Dalglish was our manager and he nearly signed them both

    ReplyDelete
  39. We wouldn't want him on loan though. I think Frank de Boer's connection with Barca had everything to do with this and Ajax know they need to rely on loan moves if they want to have players this good playing for them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Then why didn't Dalglish use his sense last year when he was given millions to spend. What did he do ? Bring Carroll, Downing, Adam. Should he not have looked elsewhere for better value for money ? Dalglish does not deserve to be Liverpool Manager now. He wasted a big amount of money which could have won us a league title if spent with brain.

    ReplyDelete
  41. There were rumours that Dalglish wanted to sign Diamé, so fair enough on this one, but I wouldn't be too sure that we would have got Walcott.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Seems as talk about Diame's Release Clause being triggered was a hoax. Still no news on who has signed him. Maybe it was a ploy from West Ham to prevent anyone from making a late bid, cause you can't buy an item from a store when the store keeper tells you someone has already bought that item... #sly

  43. I haven't seen him play enough for us to even have a opinion of whether he is talented or not!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sometimes I feel we a joke of a scouting team.

    ReplyDelete
  45. He's the real deal!

His break up play is excellent and his positioning is impeccable. His positioning does not require much tackling as he knows how to cut of supply to the opponent even when we dont have the ball.

He would be a fantastic acquisition for LFC!

    FSG; Step Up!!!

  46. don't insult dagger he has been briliant what other defender do u see time and time again charging out form the defense and reaching into the box for corners and free kicks people like dagger and parker are players i love heart and soul for there clubs

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ive watched every minute of him and he is talented.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Fair enough, each to their own. Although, for me, I need to see him in action for us considerably more before making a conclusive judgment. A handful EL and Capital One Cup starts is not much to go on (zero league starts I believe) and despite the success of Suarez, I am always wary about being conclusively positive on players based on Dutch league form/videos. So for me, there isn't much to go on as I'm a believer in the proof is in the pudding philosophy and he has barely served up any pudding for me to judge. But that is just me.
