Daniel Sturridge on the verge of breaking 39-year old goalscoring record.

Much to the delight of Liverpool fans, New Reds signing Daniel Sturridge has scored in each of his first three games for the club, and if he scores against Oldham this weekend, he'll break an Anfield record that's stood for the last 39 years.

In 1974, Ray Kennedy - Bill Shankly's final signing - scored on his debut for the club, and like Sturridge, went on to score in the following two games.

No other LFC player since has managed to score four goals in a row from their debut, but Sturridge could break that record this weekend.

The Kennedy stat is being widely circulated by the media at the moment, but to be fair, it's not strictly correct. The attacker - who won three European Cups during his time at Anfield - scored in his first three competitive games for the club, so surely that should be the relevant criterion when establishing the paramaters of this particular record?

With that in mind, Sturridge will have to score in five games in a row to break the actual record, which is held by Kenny Dalglish. In 1977, Dalglish scored in his first four competitive games for LFC; three league games, and one League Cup game. Granted, the King's debut came in the Charity Shield the same year, but that isn't classed as a genuine competitive game.

Whether Sturridge breaks the record or not, his partnership with Luis Suarez is already bearing fruit, and Reds legend John Aldridge is excited about the possibilites. He told the Liverpool Echo today:

"The pair have a natural understanding already, and what’s even more ominous for Premier League defenders is that the partnership is only going to get better. For a partnership to work together like Suarez and Sturridge did on Saturday – in what was their first start in the same team – was remarkable"

It's probably not wise to get too carried away at this stage. The partnership is only a few games old - let's see how it's doing after ten games.

  1. Sturridge has impressed me, especially in his last match. So far so good.

Let's play him, Borini and Sterling on Sunday!

  2. One thing I have noticed in the short time he has been here is how much further up the field the midfield players are getting. His presence may bring goals from all over the pitch. It would be great if Borini could start banging a few in now! We would be fairly intimidating then.

  3. Jason Carr will be here to moan about Sturridge shortly and anything else LFC related.

    Bluenose all day long!

  4. Not going to happen.Buck would probably bench the first team players and put in the kids, in wake of our next game with Arsenal.

  5. He plays very far up the pitch basically forcing the other team to defend deeper because of his pace. That in turn brings room for the midfielders to push up the pitch. I have to admit I wasn't overly excited about the signing because of the pricetag but for now he's proving me very wrong.

  6.  I think there is something natural about this partnership, reminds me a bit of Yorke and Cole. It will be also interesting to see how Borini develops over the rest of the season.

  7. Daniel Sturridge was not very high on my list of ' Must Have ' players,
but I have to admit that his performances so far have been impressive. I did not think he had the required work ethic and was not a team player. How great to be proved wrong ! That dummy he sold for the second goal against Norwich was worth the entrance fee on its owm. Despite what certain contributors say on this site, the future looks good. Fourth place is no longer a pipe dream, we are still in Europe and the FA Cup . Brendan Rogers has produced/is producing an entertaining and exciting team and FSG are staying quietly in the background and not subjecting the club to crass and stupid actions like those taking place elsewhere e.g Chelsea and Southampton. Next league game with Arsenal will be a defining one in terms of progress made so far.

  8. I think he will put out a strong team. Might rest Reina again from injury though. I'm sure we will lose against Arsenal as i am starting to feel a little better about our season

  9. I'm enjoying watching the fledgling partnership and, possibly, it might even be more fruitful than the Gerrard/Torres partnership which, if you watch LFC TV, will know that they have been the club's best pairing over a 2 year period.

  11. like you say jaimie to early to judge but the early signs are looking promersing the next two league games will give us a better indication as they will have to play well to score goals, also think the dropping of allen as turned defence into attack a lot more quicker something both players should thrive on

  12. What the hell are you talking about?? Sturridge has scored in his first 3 games, all of which have been 'competitive' fixtures!! Are you saying that Kennedy also scored in 2 non competitive fixtures in his first five games. Some of your articles are pretty atrocious, but this takes the biscuit.

  13. Not a fan of his but did make some sense tactically before he came here, why he could do well. Very early days to start writing him about his LFC career yet but kudos to him for his start. Fitted in well so far.

JK, did you delete the Sneijder-Aldo article because he broke policy? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. No, your ability to comprehend the written word is what's atrocious. You've clearly misunderstood the article, though how that's possible is unclear considering it's as straightforward as they come.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah. The cheek! Aldo thinks he can come on here and hurl insults? Who does he think he is!

(But seriously, it got chewed up by the system; text disappearing etc, so I had to delete)

  16. I, too, have problems understanding what you wrote in this particular article. Sturridge has already equalled Ray Kennedy's record of scoring in his first three competitive matches, right? Therefore the sentence "no other player SINCE has managed to score four goals in a row from their debut" confuses me a bit. Has Kennedy scored in his first four games for us, or has he scored four goals in his first three games? Or does Sturridge better that record if he scores in his fourth game?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Like you, i didn't understand, i m ust be tired or something. A little help JK please

  18. Like many others I wasn't totally sure about Sturridge, but did recall he had scored plenty for Bolton when played through the middle.  So far, so great and I would also love to see Borini added to the attack at Oldham.

Looking forwards, I still believe we are in a slightly false situation and damned with faint praise.  Forget the hard luck stories at Anfield against City and Utd and the other games where we didn't get our just desserts; we did actually beat Everton only to be robbed by a linesman.  Stick on those extra 2 points (and knock 1 off Everton) and we are well and truly in the mix.

I know that clearly cannot happen, but psychologically, that is where Rodgers must position the team and really get them to kick on from here.  I'm not sure we can grab 4th as there is a lot of competition, but it is in our hands given that we are at Arsenal shortly and Everton and Spurs still have to come to Anfield.

We might not be quite as good (yet) as some of the more gung ho amongst might suggest, but we are finally in a good place and in with a shout - which only a short time ago looked a forlorn hope.  IF we could also nick one of the cups it would prove to be a great season!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. If we manage to get top 6 from this position would be a result from us. But then we would have to continue that form into next season. We still need a couple of signings this month, we are 1 down from December and we all know we were very light then. Come on BR, give me something to be really happy about

  20. It is still early days for DS here.  Great start  for him. I just hope the momentum can be built from here on.
Good to see 4 different players score in a game. It will boost the confidence of the players and team overall

    ReplyDelete
  21.  Not 2 sure myself LOL

    ReplyDelete
  22. Going to be interesting to see how BR handles his lineups over the next few games.

With Oldham, Arsenal, and Man City all in 7 days, I can't imagine he fields a very strong lineup for the Oldham game.

As much I want to field a strong team with the best chance of progressing in the FA Cup, we need to rest our big guns for the upcoming premier league matches.

  23. * Kennedy scored three goals in a row from his debut.

    * No other player since Kennedy scored 3 in a row has managed to break that record and score four goals from their debut.

    * Sturridge has scored 3, so if he scores v Oldham he'll break the record.

    * Having said that, Dalglish scored in 4 games in a row from his league debut onwards (i.e. competitive game debut)

    * KD made his full debut in the Charity Shield.

    * I argued that the actual record to be broken is KD's (i.e. scoring in 4 games in a row from competitive debut)

    ReplyDelete
  24. It looks like it will go down to goal difference between 3rd to 7th placing. maybe even below. We have to keep clean sheets and keep banging in the goals.

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's ok, Aldo was wrong anyways

    ReplyDelete
  26. ok, now we are on the same page. When was the last time an LFC player scored in their first 4 games in a row, excluding KD?

    ReplyDelete
  27. As far as I know, that hasn't happened pre or post Dalglish.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hope im wrong but i dont see borini making it at Anfield. At best he will never be more than an impact player coming off the bench. If we were to buy another striker which i think will be the case even if it is in the summer Borini will be 4th choice striker and for £10-11 Million im sorry that doesnt wash with me. Great business again by liverpool (thumbs up)

  29. I think we should go for:

    GK-Jones
    RB-Wisdom
    CB-Carragher
    CB-Skrtel
    LB-Robinson/Young northern Irish Left Back
    MC-Shelvey
    MC (AMC)- Suso
    MC- Allen
    LW-Sterling or Coutinho (  ;op  )
    ST- Borini
    RW- Sturridge

  30. I think BR is on record as saying he's going to try to win every trophy he can.  I'll bet LS/DS start together and try to put us into the lead before being subbed out...hopefully early in the second half. Besides they need to play together to be an effective team and the Oldham game would allow that as a warm-up to Arsenal/City.  They've only had the one game together.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thats cleared it up, I gotta admit I was a little lost too lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. I`m just glad after backing him for ages, spouting about how he will be great for us, he hasn`t so far made me look a fool lol.

    ReplyDelete
  33. to use the cliche "so far so good " and as long as he keeps scoring (thats all that matters right)he will be here long enough to break a lot of records.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know what you're saying. He has the look of a guy who will be unlucky alot and ultimately end up being a what might have been type player. But he does have good movement and is still young so hopefully he will improve. I like his attitude anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think your back 4 and midfield 3 are pretty close to what it'll be Sunday. Skrtel might be the one guy in there that may be rested.  I wish Coates would get more chances to play (provided he's still on the team).

The attacking 3 will be interesting to see.  I have to imagine Borini gets a start and Sterling too.
Will be interested to see if he starts Sturridge or leaves him on the bench to get a run out as a sub.  Could Assaidi make an appearance?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks for making that clear. Now I understand.

Well, is the Community Shield a competitive match? While it is often seen as a glorified friendly match, it is actually a Super Cup, and officially no friendly.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I know sturridge has scored in his each game so far, but we must not forget two of those were againts poor teams and all three were easy goals tap ins, im not trying to be negative but lets chill and wait its only three games dont take him over the moon already, if he performs vs arsenal and city hes a real deal

    ReplyDelete
  38. Isn't our young Northern Irish lad a right-back?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Is Assaidi already back from the African Cup of Nations?

    ReplyDelete
  40. We've been crying out for someone to finish off those tap-ins for quite some time now.

    ReplyDelete
  41. He hasn't.  My mistake.

  42. think Jamie actually needs to apologise to the original poster, I too was left very confused. Lets see if jamie practices what he preaches, the chap deserves an apology.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Remember going to wembley for kennys debut in the shield v arsenal, we,d just let keegan go & wondered how he could be replaced, what a debut! The king is dead, long live the king!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I see you miss out the fact that the original poster slags off the site in his post, hence my response, but I'm the one who has to apologise? Nonsense. Anyone who posts snide comments like that deserves my response.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think the attitude is key.

Forlan had the look of a good guy who was unlucky, but he was able to become world class by virtue of his application.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Nice line-up. I'd go for Coates (if he is still here) and drop Sturridge. I'm not sure who for, but we want to keep him fresh. Actually, maybe give him a half or even 60mins.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I mean, REALLY!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yep, believe it or not :-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'll be the first to put up my hand or doubting this man
before he arrived. I haven't hidden my distain for his past performances. For years I watched a
selfish player who only played for himself and consistently jeopardized the
chances of a team win for individual glory. What i've seen in these three games
is a totally different player and I for one hopes that he continues sticking it
to me and the other doubters for the rest of his Anfield career. And I'll be
rooting for him to beat the record this weekend (and the actual competitive one against the gunners next weekend)!! YNWA Daniel!

  50. Ok, maybe I went a bit OTT. I was having a bit of a bad day today. Immediately after i posted, the penny dropped and I half regretted it. Only half though - it's still a crap debate! I admit I do agree with some of your opinions and like some of the debates triggered. And I'll even take my hat off to you for digging up obscure quotes no-one else reports. You're the only website in the world that still gives Stevie Nicol the time of day...
