Sign? €12m star who said "I want to play for LFC" confirms La Liga exit...

In 2009, Rafa Benitez was linked with a €10m move for Turkish star Arda Turan, a self-confessed Liverpool fan. The tricky winger ended up moving to Atletico Madrid, but the Reds have kept tabs on the winger ever since, and now, Turan's Agent has confirmed that the skilful winger will definitely be leaving La Liga this summer.

Discussing Turan's future on Turkish television channel TRT last night, Ahmed Bulut - the player's Agent - said:

"Arda wants to play for another club, to live a different experience. We are working now to make it happen.

"Atletico know what our intention is. If all goes well, Arda will leave the Madrid club at the end of this season."

When pressed on a possible destination, Bulut claimed there are a small number of clubs who could afford to sign the 25-year-old:

"There are only five teams in Europe who can bear the cost of the transfer of Arda and he will leave for one those five clubs"

With respect to Turan, we're talking about a player who cost Madrid €12m; he's not Messi or Ronaldo, and even if his transfer value has increased by, say, 50% (unlikely), then he would cost €18m, which is eminently affordable for many clubs around Europe.

Liverpool are still tracking Turan. Indeed, in October, the club sent an 'observer' Liverpool sent an 'observer' to watch himin Turkey's World Cup qualifier with Romania.

Turan has made it clear several times in the past that he wants to join Liverpool. At the time of Benitez's pursuit in 2009, he said:

"I most want to play at Liverpool because of the culture of the club and the fans"

A year later, he reiterated his Anfield preference:

"As I always mention, Liverpool attracts me because of their tradition. In Europe, I am a Liverpool supporter, so if I go to play in Europe, I would like to play for them".

A couple of months ago, Nuri Sahin posted a picture on his Twitter account of Turan in a Liverpool shirt, so perhaps the Reds midfielder will try and persuade his countryman to come to Anfield?

Having said that, Turan's recent injury history is a concern; in the last 15 months, he's suffered three separate incidents, and the last thing Liverpool need right now is to buy more injury-prone players.

Worth a bid?

  1. Bit of a typo in the 8th paragraph :)

I think many fans would want to see this happen. Injuries are concerning but worth a bid I reckon

  2. He is really creative midfielder worth a bid in my opinion

  3. A player to look at in the summer for sure. For now there seems to be nothing. I think Rodgers will go for loan deals this January. Rodgers will probably go for Sturridge on loan or some other crappy, unknown youngster/player.
Looks like the agony will continue until next summer. Or even beyond.

  4. Really the club needs Arda in January in the summer is ok though.

  5. would be a good signing someone who acctually wants to play for the club and not for the money we should have signed him years ago, better late than never

  6. Sophian Feghouli. Think he is better...

  7. And given Valencia's and Atletico's situation probably cheaper...

  8. I don't understand why he wants to leave Atletico right now. They're having their best season since the turn of the century and he's only there a short time anyway. It's not like he said, I want to go to LFC and if they come in I'll leave Atletico. He's said that he wants to leave Spain no matter who come in for him with us being his favourites. Maybe we can do a straight swap for Downing :-)

  9. Every good player is worth a bid because our squad is so thin at the moment. I wouldn't mind if our negotiators send out 100 bids this January because the chances of these good players joining is slim - but its worth a shot to let them know we are interested, for the future.

  10. Spot on, Jason. Another player who mentioned that he would want to play for us before he moved to Europe is Agüero. Imagine we'd signed him instead of Cissé, Aquilani, Carroll or Allen. (Are you satisfied now that I mention signings from several former managers?)

  11. this is the type of player i want...one who talks about the club and not the money...I hope injuries are not a concern ...but then again will Rodgers sign a player who passes forward probably not ...likely hood he will go for Gareth Barry

  12. Were Beatles Liverpool or Everton fans? I know, stupid question, but I am really bored...

  13. Jaimie please- a question.

Counter attack, Agger is left alone against a striker and he DECIDES to make a foul trying to prevent him scoring.
Suarez handles the ball to prevent them scoring.
They both know that card is on its' way(and a penalty), but they think that is the better way- maybe opposition won't score and their team will defend well for the rest of the game. For me it is the same situation- doing something against the rules (like 'smart fouls' in the midfield), knowing the consequences.

I am very 'romantic' about football and I hate 'my' players cheating(don't approve Suarez' cheating, but I understood why he did it vs Stoke for example), but for me that was not cheating.

I know we disagree on Stoke situation, but that is another topic, please explain how Agger situation from above and 'smart fouls' are not cheating and handle is.

    Just saw your reply...

  14. BR has stated there will be no big name players coming in january ,the whole club is a shambles, loan deals at best with players coming in that aint good enough for there own clubs,Forget about a striker our midfield is a disgrace gerrard is a shadow of the man and legend he was ,,allen is worst than charlie adam,,downing is a clown ,and god knows how sahin ever pulled on a madrid shirt,, RODGERS SPENT 25 million on two donkeys ,and as for FSG there pricks who havent a clue sold maxi and kuyt ,and let carroll leave without a replacement ,the reason carroll left was because of wages not because he didnt fit into the team ,,,FSG tell BR what he has and what he will do,,BR hasnt the balls to confront them and he seems happy to go along until his marching orders are handed out come the summer 2013,,,

  17. He needs to avoid a repeat of last season where Dalglish presided over relegation form from jan to may 2012. We are a lot closer to the bottom than we were then. Any player who can spark us in to life is welcome.

  19. "Pricks" seems to be a word Jaimie hasn't put into his word filter.

To be fair, Maxi and Kuyt both wanted to leave. Furthermore you seem to have some inside information given that you allegedly know why Carroll was allowed to leave on loan. Would you be so kind and provide your source for that?

  20. i meant lol whats satisfiying me got to do with it ,please your self don,t worry about me

  21. I've never argued that 'smart fouling' is not cheating. Re the Agger example: It's a deliberate attempt to gain an unfair advantage, ergo it's cheating (IMO).

    ReplyDelete
  22. kopite1977 - Please do not personally insult players, the manager or FSG. Thanks.

  23. I had the singular version, but have now included both.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well than you will give Lucas couple of posts as the biggest cheat ever, right?

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's pretty obvious that I have a very different attitude towards people, even on the internet, than you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. By the way didn't say you argued smart fouls is not cheating, just made the assumption since I never heard you say he is a cheat, Lucas or any other dm...

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is a massive difference between fouling someone and deliberately handballing/diving. The latter bring massive disrepute onto the image of football and the club, whereas fouling is part and parcel of the game, even if it's deliberate. Additionally, there is never any doubt about intent when it comes to diving: the player always intends to deceive the ref and dive. With fouls, often, they're just horribly mistimed, rather than deliberate.

It's a mater of prioritisation: when highlighting/tackling cheating, focus ont he worst things first, and the offences that are massively dishonest and damaging (diving, feigning injury, deliberate handball on the line and/or to score a goal), are the worst, and have the greatest negative consequence on a game (via goals being scored/penalties given/players being carded/image of the game etc)

  31. This past Thursday, Liverpool and new boss Brendan Rodgers made the call to accept a deal to loan striker Andy Carroll to West Ham.

The news wasn’t overly surprising, given that Rodgers seemed to think that Carroll's playing style did not fit with Liverpool. Still, the mere £1 million, combined with Carroll’s salary for the year, was a low price for West Ham to pay.

This is coming just two seasons after Liverpool purchased Carroll from Newcastle with a £35 million bid.

The move by Liverpool showed a clear intent to save money and get Andy Carroll out of town. LOOK UP THE NET THATS WHAT ITS THERE FOR,,,

    ReplyDelete
  32. Cheating is on top of the list, for sure.
But handling to save the goal is different- when you dive you go for advantage without giving anything away, when you handle you exchange extra man and a penalty for not conceeding- preety fair?

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is- smart foul and handle is going against rules knowing you will get punished (handling even more so), unlike diving which is going against fair play and rules trying to avoid punishment- punishment is not an option for the diver.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Could you please highlight where it says that, as you've claimed before, Carroll was allowed to leave "because of wages not because he didn't fit into the team". I mean, not some crude interpretation.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It may be telling it like it is or it may not. It definitely is what you think it is like.

    ReplyDelete
  36. If only the world was so easy to describe, everything is black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm with you on that one, Orme. So-called tactical fouls aren't any better than stopping the ball from going in with a deliberate hand-ball. Both are deliberate and cheating, though one is considered a serious crime and the other is considered as being part of the game (not according to the book, though).

    ReplyDelete
  38. If you get fair punishment for what you do and accept it- it is not cheating.
So I guess you are not with me, after all..

    ReplyDelete
  39. TBH Turan although a tidy player would not necessarily set Anfield alight. His record for At Madrid is not all that. Plus he does not create much either. Would much rather prefer someone else.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Don't know really. When Suarez stopped that shot on goal against Ghana I didn't think it was cheating. I would have done the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeees! Everybody would. Ghanaians (is that how you spell it?) are only mad at him because he fcuked them, not because he was cheating..

  42. Been a decent signing for Atleti but not been out of this world, though then again, if he was, we would have no chance. With not a lot of money in Spanish football beyond the big two, always a chance for us to buy from that league. Atleti had their EL winnings held by UEFA back in September due to outstanding payments (might have been sorted now), which illustrates possibly how bad things are financially over there. Atleti may well have to either sell Falcao for big money or sell a few of the other players, or even maybe both!

  43. Sometimes LFC needed to break the bank to get world class players.Christian Erikson and Tello will be good candidates for new wingers. If we cannot get Radamel Falcao, Edison Cavani and Mario Gotze, why not we try to get David Villa, Fernando Llorente or Mario Gomez? Or maybe can make surprise signing Gonzalo Higuin or Karim Benzema.....hehehe. I love it.......

    ReplyDelete
  44. why not he is a good player and wants to play here

    ReplyDelete
  45. Guess that's how you spell it.

The commentator on German telly didn't like it either, but most of my mates, all of whom play the game themselves, agreed that it's simply what one would do out of reflex in such a situation. Wonder what the media would have said if, say, England would have achieved something because of an action like that.

    ReplyDelete
  46. If we are throwing names of players around that wouldn't join a club outside the Champions League, I'd like to add Neymar.

  47. crude interpretation ,,didnt rodgers state that you cant have a 35 million pound player collecting a wage from the bench,,funny thing is the yanks are all about the money,,if you think otherwise ur deluded,,they just signed victarino for 39 million for the red socks and they wouldnt go an extra million for dempsey,,,truth is the yanks see liverpool as an investment on a global market ,success is a bonus but they are more worried about marketing the brand,,one of the first things they said after buying liverpool was they where surprised how far behind they were as a global brand considering the fan base they have,,,truth is a really dont have a problem with fsg but boston red socks is there main concern not lfc and to watch only loan deals and tit bits of players being linked to us after the honeymoon period was over ,,has me thinking a la gillett hicks,, oh and to advertise lfc on channel 5 showing the in,s and outs of a club that always kept there affairs behind closed doors showed it was all about the money,,,,come january we,ll see what big name players they buy and if soo i,ll be the first to grovel to you ,,,

The mouth is small and tubular, typical of species that feed on termites. The aardvark has a long, thin, snakelike, protruding tongue and elaborate structures supporting a keen sense of smell that explains why your mother looks the way she does

  53. Yes, an intelligent reply might be the best a person like me can come up with.

You are indeed very good at transcribing my comment. Is that your profession? Counterfeiting?

I won't explain to you the thinking behind my user-name. Anyway, pigs are considered to be pretty intelligent animals, so even you next attempt to insult me still doesn't work. Did you copy the description of the anteater from Wikipedia. Sorry for asking such a silly question, it's pretty obvious that you wouldn't have know all those things in the first place.

What my mother has got to do with all this is way beyond me. Well, it is the kind of attempted insult school children try. Is that what you are? A little school boy? Do your parents know that you mix with adults on the internet instead of doing your homework? They must be so proud of you that you come on here and try to insult people, because it is the best you can do. If I were one of them, I'd worry about your future. Vacancies for people who can do nothing else but insult others are rare nowadays, I've heard. They are probably not well paid anyway. You could still become a thug. Insulting people is daily business there, but it has a downside. You may spend most of your life in prison.

You know what, I think you should win the non-existent comment of the day award for you initial insult as this will be the only thing you will ever achieve in life.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just like the rest of the world I don't care one bit about what you tell people to do. You've probably got more attention from me on here today than you usually get in an entire year in your so-called real life.

  57. He's said 'from the bench'. My 'crude' interpretation for that would be that it has footballing reasons.

I don't contest your assumption that our club is an investment to FSG, but would like to point out that they surely don't want the value of that investment to plummet. Therefore, and to sell us on a profit some time in the future, the club must be back in the CL. To achieve that our income has to be improved (as well as the playing staff). Can't see anything wrong with that.

The general 'Americanisation' of our club is something that is alien to me and to many others I guess, but then we are all romantics in one way or another, aren't we. The world is changing and so is the sporting world. Guess the best we can do is hope that FSG get it right.

    ReplyDelete
  58. He'd just rot on the bench anyway, like Sahin, what with Captain Fantastic, and Rodgers pet Joe Allen in the team. Our powderpuff frontline is where the attention needs to be given anyway.
