'Buy him now' - Lawro urges rival club to sign 'wonderful' £20m LFC star...

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina showed his near-post vulnerability once again during Saturday's 1-3 defeat to Aston Villa at Anfield, and although Brendan Rodgers recently insisted that the Spaniard is not for sale, speculation over his future persists, with Arsenal reportedly waiting in the wings to make a January bid. I've argued many times that the Reds should let Reina leave, and Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes Arsene Wenger should make him a a transfer priority for the Gunners.

In his column for The Mirror yesterday, Lawro claimed that Wenger could 'no longer keep faith with the players that are continually leaving him in the firing line', and suggested Reina would be a good addition to the Arsenal squad. He said:

"Now is the time for him [Arsene Wenger] to be ruthless. People talk about Pepe Reina at Liverpool. If he were available I would go and buy him now".

The fact that one of Liverpool's ex-players is actively encouraging a rival manager to sign one of the club's current players is quite telling, and indirectly highlights Reina's decreasing influence and necessity at Anfield.

Arsenal made a £20m bid for Reina back in 2010, as he confirmed in his autobiography, released last year:

"Arsenal offered £20m, a phenomenal amount for a goalkeeper. Part of me felt that I was well within my rights to consider my future. When Liverpool received the bid, they rejected it. I was told that my continued presence was crucial to the sale of the club. I was simply a bargaining chip in the sales process"

It wouldn't surprise me if the resentment Reina clearly felt at being used as a 'bargaining chip' subsequently affected his performances.

The Arsenal link has intensified over the last few weeks. According to a report last week, the Gunners have 'already made moves' to bring Reina - who Rodgers recently described as a 'wonderful player' - to Highbury:

"There is up to €75 million from existing cash resources available for the manager to use in January, which could result in €62m of new talent arriving at the club. The Gunners are looking to reinforce the goalkeeping...position and have already made moves to bring in some of their top targets, who include...Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina"

The Guardian and The Independent have also recently suggested that Reina is on the way out, and The Mirror claimed the Gunners could be open to a swap deal:

"Pepe Reina is ready to leave Liverpool. His agent has been...testing the market among clubs who could afford to pay the Spanish keeper’s £100k-a-week wages. The goalkeeper could leave Anfield in January if the price is right, and Arsenal are the early front-runners".

Fans shouldn't put too much stock in Rodgers' public statements on Reina's future. Prior to being shunted out to West Ham, Andy Carroll also got the dreaded vote of confidence from the manager:

"There is absolutely no chance of a loan deal. I would need to be a nutcase even to consider at this moment to let Carroll go out"

Like Rodgers' comments about Reina, this sounds like a pretty emphatic denial, but soon afterwards, Carroll left on loan.

Is Reina absolutely integral to Liverpool's success? Lawro doesn't seem to think so, and his recent spell on the sidelines recently (arguably) proved that he's not. The Reds can manage without him, and if that's the case, why not cash-in now whilst his value is at a decent level?

  1. i would not let rodgers have another thing to do with lfc transfers his signings have been poor ,the ones that he gives a game to,and if any more proof was needed roders says it himself there is absolutley no chance of a loan deal,i would have to be a nutcase even to cosider at this moment to let carroll go out, enought said i believe you brendan

  2. Sell him to the highest bidder.

    That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  3. But I bet you'd love to let kenny spend millions on complete dross again

    ReplyDelete
  4. not at all kenny made mistakes and he paid for them with his job, just as hodgeson did before him,but rodgers has the worst record of the lot but hes still in a job

    ReplyDelete
  5. Have to agree, but how many top keepers are available in Jan(to us)? Or we go with Jones? As I'm writing, it came to me- give Jones spot on the line, sell Reina and Downing and we can afford the fee and the wages for Cavani. Plus fsg invest for the midfielder or two and it would look great!

  6. I don't think their keeper has been that bad to justify going after Reina, especially considering the Spaniard's form in the last two seasons but who knows eh. I'm certainly not against Reina leaving as been whinging about his form for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I would sell him for 15-20 million, but not less than that. He is a spanish international in his prime years and a long serving player. We have to view him in context. Selling him for less than that would make little sense.
I am more insterested in tying sterling down to a new deal.
I don't think we can judge Allen and Borini until the end of the season.
Another thing, LFC are playing the most attractive football since Benitez' penultimate year. That for me as a fan and spectator has great worth. I watch football because it is the beautiful game.
In my opinion, we need to get behind BR and the team. Criticising a project halfway through is not constructive. In a way we are hurting our own chances with all this constant bickering.

  8. sorry mate, but kenny wasted a lot more money than rodgers did

    ReplyDelete
  9. Cash in now and replace him with who, Jones is a joke any players happy to sit on the bench every season and not making any noises about it smacks of not believing in his own ability. And Doni he's just the as bad, if we do sell him I'd bring in the celtic keeper young and have proven himself as a first team player.

  10. agree m8 but he also won a cup and got to another final rodgers took on the same team and spent money ,so the performances should improve but they have not infact i would go as far as to say they have digressed

  11. I'm beginning to come around to Jamie's point of view here . Always been a big Reina fan , but he's just not pulling off the kind of saves that says top keeper anymore and is vunerable both at his neear post and from long shots. When was his last worldie? or penalty save? He used to do both fairly regularly.

It's the bargaining chip bit that worries me, if we got £15-20m I'd go for Butland and take the occasional error in handling for a better shot stopper.

Granted Reina is great on the deck, but we can nurture that in Butland, after all, it's just distribution to full and centre backs we're talking here.

As for the rodgers out comments, who's the alternative. Sack the manager after 20+ games? Very constructive.

  12. I keep hearing this rubbish about Rodgers having a worse record than the like of Hodgson. Do people not look at the team the likes of Hodgson inherited and then compare it to our current team were we are relying on a few teenagers to do this job for us. We are overarchievng at the minute with our current squad. Gerrard is past it. Suarez is the only decent attacker we have at the minute, Sterling has huge potential but far to young to be playing week in and week out. As for Borini, who knows, its just a pity he got injured. He has brilliant awareness and game intelligence, and I believe he will be a brilliant signing, but some people have wrote him off already. Absolute joke, what ever happened to giving playing a season to settle down?!?! Its took Suarez a season and a half to get his scoring boots on. Borini should be given the same benefit.

  13. pepes a good keeper but everybody as there price,i just think it will sent out the wrong message to sell another one of our best players and replace with a lesser player, unless fsg invest the money from any sales back on players

    ReplyDelete
  14. If the price is right and Reina wants to move, then I don't see why we shouldn't do business. Provided, of course, that we have a replacement lined up already, which probably isn't Jack Butland.

  15. How come some people bang on about the bloody League Cup, but then play down the significance of the Europa League as a minor competition.

The same team minus experienced pros like Maxi, Kuyt, Bellamy who all wanted to leave partly due to being left out of the team in favour of Downing, Henderson, Carroll.

  16. overarchieving please god no so if we stop overachieving we can expect a relagation dog fight at the end of the season, blimey i did not realise our game with qpr was such a massive 6 pointer

    ReplyDelete
  17. it worked for roy hes england manager now ,maybe rodgers could take his tikka takka to the nou camp lol

    ReplyDelete
  18. Agree, and we are not even halfway through our project of rebuilding to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Given their run in the CL it would be difficult to convince Celtic's keeper (Forster?) to come here in January. Anyway, there are many young (younger than Forster), talented keepers out there like ter Stegen or Leno to name but two.

    ReplyDelete
  20. and fa cup did't even start!

    ReplyDelete
  21. FSG have shown that they are willing to invest earnings from transfers into new players. That's, for instance, how Andy Carroll ended up as a Liverpool player.

    ReplyDelete
  22. why reply to me i don,t play down the europa league

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, I probably should have pointed out that you don't play down the Europa League, but I guess that you, too, have noticed that many people do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. bellamy wanted a swansong at cardiff maxi wanted to go home, and left out of the team in favour of downing, and hendo well players are being left out of the team by rodgers , in favour of the same players or am a dreaming about seeing them this season, and don,t get me started on his goldenchild who as been a complete waste of a place

    ReplyDelete
  25. we do not have the right to win games and play well

    ReplyDelete
  26. i believe we should try and win every competition we play in

    ReplyDelete
  27. If anyone bids 20m for a goalkeepr....or OUR stale goalkeeper, that should be the last you see of them. But why would Wenger want Reina over szczesny?

If we sold Reina and then played Brad jones or even signed Friedel or Robinson for £500k until the end of the season they would do no worse than Reina has since we finished 2nd in the league. That would leave us £19.5m to spend on a couple of players IN THE SUMMER unless that is of course we have for once done our homework on our targets. Then and only then should we spend in January. I'd rather wait till the summer than buy another panic dudd.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jones showed that he done well and what did BR do? Drop Jones again. Cavani would be a lovely signing but not sure if you want to come to us at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Guess it's some kind of irony, sarcasm or something like that- but I just don't get it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. All we have to do is look at the Germany seniors and U21 and pick a GK! They are all really good and most are playing 1st team football.

Why BR benched Jones as soon as Reina came back is beyond me...further proof that he will not bench Gerrard even though his performances have been below average. Drop Gerrard, Reina and Allen and give someone else a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sure, but I believe we should have priorities. The league should be the most important competition for us, followed by any European competition, then the FA Cup. The League Cup should be our least important priority, though I am grateful that we've won it as we wouldn't have any European competition this season.

    ReplyDelete
  32. are you are in cuckoo land if we are overachieving with a 100 million pound squad packed with internationals what are Swansea and Norwich and co doing performing miracles...Rodgers and co have brainwashed you into thinking we have worse players than we actually have ...the fact is we have a clueless manager who hasn't the gumption to drop Gerrard and is playing a system which is easily exposed is you done have the right profile of player

    ReplyDelete
  33. worst record lets not even go there BR has now started give him a chance three summer signins remember that borini, allen and assaidi KD how much??? Rafa how much?? come on

    ReplyDelete
  34. Think if Maxi had played more he would have stayed. Even Rodgers knows that Allen needs a rest. He was very good earlier in the season and I for one don't know why he could be branded 'a complete waste of space' now.

    ReplyDelete
  35. golden comment kudos to finally meeting a sensible person we are rebuilding yh we lost over the weekend but we played some amazing football that weekend and for a little while now the foundation is there we just have to give BR time

    ReplyDelete
  36. i fully believe reina will be sold january or summer i mean why give jones a new contract hmmm

    ReplyDelete
  37. well yes it does...he said we wouldn't loan Carroll ...then he did that makes him a liar....or am i missing something

    ReplyDelete
  38. spot on jason .....once again though the one astute signing he seems to have made is assadi though he cant even make the subs bench the mind boggles.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So who's the replacement then? Are you impressed with Roy's England performance too?

    ReplyDelete
  40. At this moment in time id say Henderson is the best CM at the club and downing just got Mom...As for CARROLL i still believe he will come good target men only come into there own at 26/27 onwards

    ReplyDelete
  41. Forgive me but BRs signings???
    (21) Borini 10.5m
    (24) Assidi £2.5m
    (22) Allen £15m
    (24) Sahin Loan

Didn't united just spend that on one 29 year old player?

Don't get you point Jason Carr??? He's spent less than 25% of Dalgish's outlay, has lost Kuyt, Bellamey, Maxi, Aurelio in the summer!
Forced to introduce and use youngsters!
7 points off 3rd place and were only in December???

I expected nothing from Liverpool this season and i really think he's exceeding expectation.

You need to realise just because Liverpool is the name does not give us a devine right to win! in 2 or 3 transfer windows we'll be ready to compete with the Manchester clubs.

    patience needed

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah, yeah, we all know you don't like him...

    here's the actual quote:

I need a minimum of three strikers. Once the window shuts, that is it until January. I have got Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Andy Carroll. I would need to be a nutcase to even consider letting Andy Carroll go at this moment”

Note the proviso 'at this moment'

Note the words 'I need a MINIMUM of 3 strikers'

Now tell me that he ruled out loaning Carroll. ( hint: look for the words 'AT THIS MOMENT' )

Are you really trying to convince us that he didn't believe that he would get a replacement striker to replace Carroll? Oh I get it, he really thought that TWO strikers were enough and was throwing up a smokescreen to fool us all....

    Yeah , that's it, he's just a liar.

    Unbelievable

    ReplyDelete
  43. a match is 90mins ...we played well for 20 they played well for 70 ..result...we got thrashed...im afraid time isn't something you have in THE PL ask Blackburn's fans...we mess up our next 3 games we are in serious trouble ...if you think fulham.qpr, and stoke are a Knapp for us ..put your wages on it ...Heres some names for you....LEEDS...FORREST....and numerous others who felt its okay we will never go down.......... it happens

    ReplyDelete
  44. our next 3 games are all 6 pointers and thats how we should approach them

    ReplyDelete
  45. Agree but Sahin loan fee is 5 mill, and his wages are not to be forgotten(10 mill altogether is info I have)... If he does nothing this season, he is BR's flop...

    ReplyDelete
  46. If we sell Reina, he will be forced to use him... And for Cavani- money and two countrymen alongside with prospect of cl football would be enough...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hopefully.. And than fingers crossed for Jones who at the moment has same chances of doing well as Reina- at least...

    ReplyDelete
  48. he must have got him mixed up with someone who,s played for him before lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. BR is doing a pretty good job under the circumstances. Kenny sold the following:

    Ryan Babel (£6m)
    Fernando Torres (£50m)
    Paul Konchesky (£1.5m)
    Milan Jovanovic (free)
    Daniel Ayala (£0.75m)
    Nabil El Zhar (free)
    Sotirios Kyrgiakos (free)
    Emiliano Insua (£3.7m)
    David Ngog (£4m)
    Christian Poulsen (Free)
    Raul Meireles (£12m)

    Then bought the following:

    Luis Suarez (£22.8m)
    Andy Carroll (£35m)
    Jordan Henderson (£16m)
    Charlie Adam (£8m)
    Stewart Downing (£20m)
    Doni (Free)
    Jose Enrique (£5m)
    Sebastian Coates (£6m)
    Craig Bellamy (Free)

Then as you say BR lost Kuyt, Maxi, Aurelio and Bellamy.

Of the players Kenny bought only 4 are considered technically good enough for BR's system. In essence BR has lost close to 15-20 players whilst bringing in 4 of his own at nothing near Chelsea, Man City or Man Utd prices...which ever way you look at it that is a massive handicap. I would argue that not buying more players in the summer was actually a blessing in disguise and has given us the opportunity to identify fully where improvements need to be made. Br has had the chance now to look at everyone. If a solution can't be found in-house, and it can't, then BR should be given time to build his side. Given time I think he'll do ok.

    ReplyDelete
  50. they would be plenty interested if fsg match there ambition, don,t get me wrong rodgers is doing about as well as i thought he would its just he should never have been hired in the 1st place he dose not have the experience ,and thats fsgs fault, bad management, you do not see tescos making a trolley boy a superstore manager straight away

    ReplyDelete
  51. On current form you are arguably right about Henderson, though reading the comments on various LFC related sites many still want him to be sold.

Carroll may become a good player in a few years, but what he has shown for us on a regular basis was hardly convincing. Lack of movement, lack of technique, lack of heading ability, lack of composure. Sorry, but I think that we could have got a really good player for that money and at that time, too, albeit not a Brit.

    ReplyDelete
  52. ha ha ha good one i don,t think you could convince my 8 year old that by next xmas our side will competeing for the championship, any way enjoy your xmas hope santa brings you something nice

    ReplyDelete
  53. Theres nothing wrong with reina, imo hes p***ed off at the coach he wants help,he wants better players, dont forget he is a goalie, them and strikers are prima donnas,i dont think he's comfortable with new system,i think he'd sooner have the ball in the other half more, and sooner,I know i would. Glad to see you'r not a fan of ticky -tacky Jason.

    ReplyDelete
  54. it could get exciting i,ve never known us be in a relagation battle, this is a 1st for me

    ReplyDelete
  55. Buy a backup first or repeat Carroll - Dempsey fiasco.

    ReplyDelete
  56. One must never count net figures. Reina will not fetch us more then 10mn FACT and if have 10mn budget we can sign a player for 7-8mn due to agent and signing on fees.

    ReplyDelete
  57. But why compare to Chelsea, Man City or Man United? We're not looking to challenging them in the short term at least, are we? We're not title-challenging material and not anywhere near it, and I don't think many people expect us to be within the next couple of seasons. Like the rest of the teams in the league, we shouldn't be comparing our transfer power compared to those three, as we are light years away from that. How about Arsenal instead? A club that has finished in the top 4 consistently, yet still have ambitions for title challenging, whilst being rather sensible (or overly conservative some might say) with spending on transfers. How about Spurs? Who had a lower wage spend than us for last season (so too Arsenal), according to wage table done in Spring. How about Newcastle? Yes, they are struggling now but last season, we spent more than double on wages than they did and they bought decent value (at least) from the Carroll money. Yes, you need certain level of money to spend but more importantly its how you spend it that matters, as seen by our mammoth spending in the PL era with no PL title to show for it. Those three teams aside (the ones you mentioned), we are not massively handicapped, when compared to the rest of the sides and that is where we are at as a club anyway. We're not massively handicapped, in relation to our aims for the next few seasons, imo, which is to finish in top 6 at least. So I disagree in regards to that bit of your post as I don't see it as that much of a strong excuse, the lack of so-called financial power but with the rest of it, I agree to a certain extent. With the cost cutting (in terms of wages) done in the summer, me thinks Rodgers needs at least another season to what he can do but that doesn't mean he gets a free ride from criticism in the meanwhile (I'm not implying that you have said something to the contrary). We got to be sensible when it comes to who we compare our financial power to, when considering our ambitions for the next few seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  58. definitly not its all backpass and no action imo or the way brendan try to get us to play it at least is

    ReplyDelete
  59. We have Peter Gulasci, don't we??? So,why not give him a go in the first team.....

    ReplyDelete
  60. Now he is unproven. I have nothing against him at all, but it would be pretty risky throwing him in at the deep end. Just imagine the uproar if we lost because of him. The guys I have mentioned both have over 40 first team appearences at the age of 20 in the German Bundesliga already. In theory we, too, should for a change get a keeper from our own youth set-up into the first team, but is Gulacsi the one? I really don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Roy achieves with England exactly what can be achieved with England, which is nothing. The England national team and Roy Hodgson - A match made in heaven.

    ReplyDelete
  62. May I add that he believed that another attacker would be brought in. FSG have come out and took blame for the shambles that was August 31.

    ReplyDelete
  63. If we could get Butland then yes without a doubt I would sell him. People moan about signing English players, but they forget you need so many in the quad to fit with the 25 man quota. He is a great keeper imo, so if we can ship out Reina for say 15mil, and sign Butland for under that I would be happy (ideally 10mil).

    ReplyDelete
  64. *Squad not quad lol

    ReplyDelete
  65. BR trusted FSG and IAN AYRE's negotiation skills to bring in DEMPSEY.He was let down,it hardly makes him a liar like you said, just naive.
I was watching SKY SPORTS and hours before the window shut IAN AYRE went home.We should've had a plan (every letter in the alphabet after A) in place if the price FULHAM was asking was deemed to expensive.
The bad thing about getting rid before you buy is your targets have a slightly higher price tag because the selling club know you need that particular position strengthened. That, i thought was obvious but we went down the retarded route and crashed.
Tapping up of the player through the media didn't help the process.(FSG's website debacle)
The whole thing was handled very badly, hopefully everyone involved in the mess will learn and not make the same mistakes.

  66. Thought Reina was on his way out for two years now. It can happen any time soon. Why give Jones a new contract? Because he has proven that he is an able understudy.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Not sure whether Jones will ever be as good as Reina once was.

    ReplyDelete
  68. brendon rodgers needs time .... his philosophy in football is genius .. letting youngsters play is clever .... we could have any manager you lot could pick but it wouldnt be enuff ... too much behind the scenes with football at mo ... especialy with LFC ... remember albert riera and his annoying comment of lfc as a sinking ship? hate to say it but he wasnt wrong.. and ever since then we think too much of our glorius past ...

what BR is doing is exactly what we need and i back him 100%
dont get me wrong i backed kenny n clarke but there football was like watching paint dry n same with roy h.... for years we celerbrated great defence records well not anymore ... attack with energy ... put best four players in defence n they will still concede as there is just so many good players out there...
i want to watch brilliant minds at work like messi n ronaldo xavi so on..
as much as i loved the dirk kuyt n jamie carras dog fights and will always see them as legends i still miss the odd luis garcia but our in date luis suarez (amazing ) XD... lately we are getting it right even when we loose i feel we have won .... rodgers just needs to get refs playing well now 2 strikers to add aswell .. this time next year RODGERS we be million .......... times better hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  69. true we didn't came with it for the first 20 then died out that is BR's fault and the captains fault stay motivated but we can all say our atacking football is getting better and i believe in january we willl buy some players to make us top four contenders the only aim now is to make sure fourth spot is not to far away

    ReplyDelete
  70. true he did look good for the last few games he played eager to get out of his box and a good shot stopper something reina has lost

    ReplyDelete
  71. it seems even much clearer these days but time will tell

    ReplyDelete
  72. You cant be serious in stating that BR has the "worst" transfer record. King Kenny is the King of bad transfers, with special thanks to french friend.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It surely does, but I wouldn't be surprised if he regained his formerly fine form and ended his career with us.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Keep believing nick ...me ill believe it when i see it...you must point out these games where we improved our attack i must of missed them....

    ReplyDelete
  75. i did not say the worst transfer record i said the worst results record after equal games in the league infact i was being kind to rodgers hes probabley in the bottom 3 in our entire history

    ReplyDelete
  76. Liverpool are a passing team again, Rogers needs time! It was extremely frustration watching them last season trying to string three passes together. The chances will start to be converted. YNWA

    ReplyDelete
  77. But why do we compare ourselves to Utd, Chelsea and city?
You wasn't saying that when you wanted Rafa out...

Because we were competing with those teams then..

You got what you wanted and Look where we are now...

    Happy?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Reina is one of the best goal keepers in Europe. It takes a lot of gambling to find the right keeper and it's an area of the pitch you want as little change as possible. Form is temporary, class is permanent, Reina is class and he's only just coming into his prime.

    ReplyDelete
  79. would be lucky to get 5 million for reina . the man does nt make saves .think he will end up at am. their cat is on loan from chelsea maybe 1 big paycheck for peter check nice big last move .and torres part of the deal for falco .so me thinks both torres and reina will end up at athletico madrid

    ReplyDelete
  80. played between the sticks all my life. most happy when the ball was in the mix in the penatly area 100 yards up the pitch this tic tac crap is shite. lets get players in the box. gone backwards from last season .hope kenny books a cruise soon!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. u at a xmas party hic hic!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Eh? Find me a comment by me where I said that I wanted Rafa out at the time? How would you know what I was saying during Rafa's time? I wasn't even on this site back then.

Secondly, we competed for the league, genuinely, once, under Rafa. Most of the other seasons under Rafa, we were miles off the league winners, despite the expenditure on wages and transfers, just like we have been for most of the last two decades. Only once we looked like genuine competitors for the league title under Rafa. One swallow does not make a summer.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Lawreson has long shown he was never worthy to wear the LFC jersey. No loyalty what so ever. As for Reina, no one leaves in January. The idea is to give the manager more options, not less. Come the summer we can talk if he wants to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No he won't, but nor will Reina himself, unfortunately..

    ReplyDelete
  85. let's hope so whatevers best for the club

    ReplyDelete
  86. Great name for a goalie!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Arsenal would be crazy to pay anything for Reina - imho he's one of the worst goalkeepers in the Premiership atm.

Any shot hit with power or in the corners seems to be a guaranteed goal against us nowadays. He seems like a great guy, but unfortunately he is no longer anywhere near being the great goalkeeper that he once was.
