Confirmed: LFC's Chief Scout still monitoring £10m 24-goal striker. Risky buy...?

After a ridiculous attempt to score a goal with his hand in Liverpool's last game against Southampton, Luis Suarez is banned for the Reds' clash with West Ham this week, a situation that underlines the club's worrying lack of striking options. Suarez is in a rich vein of goalscoring form at the moment, but it's clear that another top class striker is needed at Anfield, and Newcastle forward Demba Ba is once again being linked with a move to Anfield.

According to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, Liverpool's Chief Scout is still keeping tabs on the Senegalese striker:

"Liverpool retain an interest in eight-goal striker Ba, and talent scout Alan Harper has frequented United games this season as the Reds look to bolster their wafer-thin strike force.

Due to a ridiculously cheap buy-out clause, Ba will be available for just £7.5m during the January transfer window, which is certainly within Liverpool's transfer budget. Newcastle Boss Alan Pardew revealed last night that he is worried about losing Ba. He said:

""The truth of it is that Demba has got a clause in his contract and it is still hanging over us. The one thing I will say on a positive note is that he has never looked me in the eye and looked like he wanted to do anything else but stay here, and I hope he does."

However, the Chronicle warns that clubs may be put off by the cost of the overall package:

"The Chronicle understands that Ba’s representatives [have] quoted interested clubs a wage packet of around £90,000 per week. With a £7.5m release clause plus agent fees, the package would also command a substantial signing-on fee that could take the deal well beyond £10m".

In September, Alex Gontran - Ba's Agent - hinted that the 27-year old could leave St. James' Park if Alan Pardew's mismanagement of the striker continued. He warned:

"Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations [in January], Demba doesn't understand the management. How could you put your best striker with full confidence on the left wing? If he continues to be a substitute all season, we'll look at other solutions".

Since that warning, Ba has started most games for Newcastle. Ba will also not be taking part in next year's African Nations Cup, which makes the possibility of his signing all the more attractive.

Mark Lawrenson is fan of the striker, and believes that Ba would be a great signing for the club. He told the BBC:

"Rodgers spent £11m on Fabio Borini in the summer but, if I had the choice of him or Ba, who still has a £7.5m release clause in his contract, then I know where I would have been shopping. There have been reports they will try to buy Ba in January. If his knee is OK, which it appears to be, it would make perfect sense for them to try to buy him".

A Liverpool team with Ba up front is a tantalising prospect:

----------------------- Jones

Wisdom -------- Agger ------- Skrtel ------- Johnson

--------------- Allen ------- Sahin/Lucas

--------------------- Gerrard

Suarez --------------------------------- Sterling/Suso/Enrique

--------------------- Ba

Since arriving at Newcastle:

* Ba has grabbed 24 goals and 2 assists in 51 starts.
* That equates to a goal/assist every 1.9 games

Great stats, but there could be an element of risk to any potential transfer. It's well known that Ba has what the Chronicle describes as a 'degenerative knee situation', and after pulling out of a deal sign him last year, Stoke Manager Tony Pulis described the Senegalese international's condition as a 'ticking timebomb'.

  2. I don't want Sturridge i must say, there are more proven strikers out there so why take a chance??

  3. I prayed for the line up we had vs Soton, it is best we have now, with Ba(or some other No 9) we could leave Shelvey out, and it is perfect, with Suso and Sterling getting a half time each, and Shelvey and Sahin waiting for their chance.

  4. Replace Sahin with Lucas. Also I think his knee thing will mean it will not happen. Walcott is the one we should get.

  5. Happy to see Pulis declined signing a "ticking timebomb" and opted for Crouch for 10M and injury-free Owen !!

  6. I like Ba, but 90k a week, for a guy who's knee is a ticking bomb. If he gets injured, we have another Joe Cole(who seems to get injured shaving). Do think he would be decent tho, but for around 50k ish a week. Hope its his agent talking BS, if so someone needs to TEA BAG the guy. Anyone know what he gets at the Toon?

  7. My dream signing for January would be - Walcott, Tello/Isco (Goal scoring wingers playing wide with Suarez in center...can switch in between game....cracking dynamic play)

    Moutinho/Willian (Playmakers/Midfield goalscorers)

Means we need 3 players to guarantee CL next season. Walcott is a must buy and any one from wingers and midfielders mentioned.

Another target which might add to the squad but won't guarantee success or CL - Klaas, Demba Ba, Mertens, Bony.

    STRICTLY NO BUYS :-

    BENT, STURRIDGE, LONG.

  8. Get him! 'Pool has a world class medical staff... as well as Rogers great with the rotation. He's cup tied for Europa though :(.

I'm sorry but Sturridge will still be a good buy... he's near the bottom of my list of acceptable strikers but above bent and long and the ukranian guy...

Just so you know whoever's reading this, Ba is somewhere in the middle of preferences for me (edging the top)...

  9. fuck off you thick scouse cunts why would he go down a step to your past it club?

  10. Cant agree that it was a ridiculous attempt by luis to score, it was just a purely instinctive reaction, the guy has more or less carried us all season , i wouldnt swap him for anyone. Think demba ba is too risky , weve had enough crocks over the years

  11. tello is playing regular football at the best club on the world, isco is targeted by clubs like mancity juve ... and walcott demands a lot of wages. Im not so sure about those guys, even tho they would be wonderfull aditions to the squad i dont think we will get any of them

Mertens, Bony and Ince look to be the best, most likely and cheapest guys we could get,

at all i totally agree with you in playing suarez at the front with some wingers with an eye for a goal

  12. Think Assaidi need a run out against Hammers, because there defenders are the physical type and they are likely to foul him persistently. This will lead to them walking on egg shells and even be reduced in numbers. What are the chances we get a peno, now that Suarez ain't playing(think this will be the game # sods law).

  13. Don't think BR has much to spend in Jan. Looks like he is going for loan deals this transfer window. Bad news? The Yanks want to balance the books this season and the club will languish in the bottom half of the table come May.
If in Jan no new signings are made, get the banners out and get rid of the skint Yanks. (of course there will be anti KD brigade and the pro Yanks who will keep harping on how much they spent last season) So dont bother to counter post here.

  14. Ba would be a fantastic buy at that price I agree aswell.

On a side note when is WISDOM GOING BACK TO THE RESERVES??

He has never made 1 successful cross that I've witnessed. He is raw and needs a lot more expreience infact I dont even think he is gonna cut it in the long term.

Johnson at right back plz and Enrique back to left back and start bringing Assaidi back into the first team.

  15. Agreed, all of it, except the part that he is not gonna make it. Europa an FA cup, with some pl games will make him a very good player. And Enrique IS LB, and a very good one I might add.

  16. allan harper must live a charmed life if hes still at the club after the last few seasons disasters

  17. Funny how people were sayin earlyer on in the season that Jose Enrique wasn't good enough wat a difference q coulPle of games make

  18. I totally agree with this!

  19. To be fair our scouting and management has been rubbish for a number of years.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Never understood them... Whole team performing lousy, earthquakes at the club, injury, but it is clear he is good player that fits perfectly in BR vision and has what we really lacked quite few times this season- muscles. Use his last couple of top form years while we develop Flano- perfect!

  21. Suarez would be best in two man attack, combination with Klaas or Llorente would be lethal..

    ReplyDelete
  22. 100% agree with the wingers. And they would have to be more in the mould of motinho because hiving "crossing" wingers will only diminish our play with no-one in our team a proven heading goals-scorer. Ideally I would love to see moutinho and eriksen in those roles but that's wish-full thinking. Walcott and Mertens are plausible. Sterling and Shelvey probable...just preparing myself for the dissapointment of us bringing in an unknown striker as back-up for Luis and BR calling it "great business" for the transfer window

    ReplyDelete
  23. of course he would, but were playing just one striker so this is gonna be difficult

    ReplyDelete
  24. and a combination with cavani would be ideal ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. For that price, yes please....if he passes medical with flying colours. But tactically, where would he play? Move Suarez to the wing? Hmm...

I watched most of the first half yesterday. They played Cisse in a sort of wide role and Ba through the middle, instead of the other way round. Newcastle are at their best in a 4-2-3-1 formation in the last 2/3 seasons but neither of those two are comfortable (at least Cisse isn't) or happy out on the wing. They aren't that great in those sort of positions and restrict their game a lot. As a centre forward, I like Demba Ba, he has quality but not sure he is all that good any other position.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Isco is quality and good enough for the big CL clubs, let alone us but I reckon he will stay at Malaga for a while yet. After all the financial in the last 12 months at the club, I reckon the owners will do what they can to give him the contract he wants to appease the fans (they are in contract talks), as Malaga is his hometown club and they are doing reasonably well in La Liga.

I like the look of Griezmann of Sociedad. Reminded him of by another poster in another thread recently. Got bit of Pires about him. Can come in as well as hold width as well as play behind the striker.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Didn't mention him- tried to be realistic, but damn it would be great!
And I hope that BR will evolve as a manager- he experimented vs Chelsea, maybe with more players he will surprise us at least from time to time...

  28. Its frightening the B.S. the nomark that is Jaime Kanwar comes out with over Suarez. Never in a million years did Suarez think he would get away with the handball. Pure instinct. Only visited this site a few times but the venom which a guy who never goes to Anfield is truly frightening.

  30. this backs up my fury with our scouting set-up. why is our chief scout wasting time watching a player everybody knows about, knows how he plays, knows what he can ????? newcastle's chief scout is off watching players like cisse and cabaye. who had truly heard and knew what they were all about before they signed them????? embarrassing.

  31. If he has degrading cartilage in his knee then I'd make it a very clear NO. The physical aspect of English football is the one area where it clearly leads world football and players must be at absolute 100% fitness in order to be effective. Just look at how poor Enrique has been with some unexplained knee "soreness". Knee injuries are hopeless to manage and you might as well just put your transfer money on a roulette table. Sure, he could get lucky and stay injury free but any kind of repeated tendinitis or established cartilage damage will mean his career could be over at any time.

  32. Walcott is better because he has got speed

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Pardew is worried about his knee too as he keeps mentioning the clause of only £7.5 million but to me he mentions it more in a someone please put a bid in, we need the money before he's totally knackered way rather than I'm worried about losing him on the cheap way.

  36. Jeez!!!!.....some of the names being linked to Liverpool are making me nauseas, Long, Bent, Ba and can you bloody believe it STURRIDGE!!! ....if we sign him I am going to ask Health Officials to check the water supply at Anfield because I suspect someone is adding a drug called "Insanity" to the water supply, Benitez was affected in his last season, Dalglish had an overdose and maybe now even BR .....especially if he signs Sturridge, symptoms include rash decisions and a loss of common sense resulting in rubbish buys .....HHmmm, sound familiar, if nothing is done we will soon sign Donald Duck as left back and Goofy as a striker thats provided Disney are prepared to release them for 200 million Pounds,......come on BR leave that water alone and sign some decent players

  37. Jesus your going overboard with this Suarez hand ball aren't you. Did you make this much fuss when Peter crouch put the ball into the net with this hand and that nob pulls saying well done? Oh no you didn't because it's. of Suarez, the root of all evil. Hypocrite and morons
