'Get rid of him' - Lawro blasts 'absolutely disgraceful' £23m star. Hypocrisy...?

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is something of a whipping-boy for former Liverpool players, and Anfield legend Mark Lawrenson is the latest ex-Red to stick the knife into the Italian international.

In his column for The Mirror today, Lawro laid the blame for City's 3-2 defeat to Man Utd squarely on 'bad apple' Balotelli's shoulders, and urged Roberto Mancini to 'cut his losses' in the January transfer market. He barked:

"I would sell him [Balotelli] on the first of January if I could. He was an absolute disgrace yesterday, and is not worth the aggravation.

"Balotelli is not worth the time they spend on him. He certainly doesn't do anything for dressing room harmony. Just get rid of him".

It appears to be open season on Balotelli at the moment, and on ESPN, Steve Nicol also slated the striker:

"Balotelli contributed nothing. There’s no chemistry with him and Aguero; there’s no hold-up play, and the one chance he had he couldn’t have missed worse if he tried. His actual demeanour hurts City. He just carries on as if he’s not interested".

So, previously unbeaten Man City lose their first league game of the season, and all of a sudden it's all Balotelli's fault, and he needs to be sold?!

In recent months, ex-Liverpool players have been queuing up to attack Balotelli, who cost City £23m. For example, Dietmar Hamann told the BBC:

"No matter how good the player is, it doesn't give him [Balotelli] the right to cause trouble. It's a distraction. It seems like his City career will come to an end because it's ongoing. If I was a manager or a player, I wouldn't want him in my team".

Alan Hansen recently dedicated an entire column to eviscerating Balotelli. He scathed:

"He [Balotelli] has become a damaging distraction. most top managers would identify a problem and get rid of the cause. You don’t need ‘characters’ like Balotelli who seem to want only to seek out confrontation with referees and opponents"

Graeme Souness is also not a fan:

"Hot-headed Balotelli is...a liability because you have got no idea what you are going to get from him. He needs to grow up – and quick".

Balotelli is not the only City player who regularly gets it in the neck. Carlos Tevez is also on Lawro's hit-list, and near the end of last season, he argued:

"He [Tevez] is bad news. Manchester City must use and abuse him now, to get something out of the situation...then kick him out in the summer as soon as they possibly can.

It's funny how we never hear Kenny Dalglish's buddies publicly eviscerate Luis Suarez, a player who, throughout his career, has caused more damage than Tevez and Balotelli combined.

Lawro et al may be right about Balotelli (and Tevez), but their overwrought complaints reek of breathtaking hypocrisy.

  1. Don't remember Suarez being described as bad for dressing room morale. Opportunism?

  2. if i was unfortunate to be a city fan, i would want rid of him. if things don't go his way, he doesn't seem interested. they have enough money to buy a top replacement. their problem is, they have created their own monster off-loading players, regarding the ridiculous wages they pay their players. who would want him on the cash he 'earns', (i say that with a huge slice of sarcasm).

  3. Yet another article containing a dig at king luis, when will thia sniping end, the player is awesome & imo it will be a sad day when we no longer have him

  4. Usually it is very difficult to agree with Nicol and Lawro, but they are right this time. Balotelli might have talent, but he is so immature in so many ways that it is quite surprising that Man City didn't offload him yet. I'd be very surprised if he'd make it at a big club unless he starts to grow up and quick.

  5. Suarez and Tevez are no angels that's for sure but i think Balotelli gets stick because alot of the time he looks like he doesn't care. if i was man city owner/manager i wouldn't have him in my team..especially as they could get most strikers in world football. Mario is a talent when hes up for it but how many times has he looked disinterested? At least Suarez and Tevez give everything on the field. I think Lawro etc are pointing to his attitude on the field and his apparent lack of desire more than anything else.

  6. You are correct - hypocrasy and frankly now becoming disgracefull bullying by a TV pundit that Mario cannot defend himself against.

I was at the game yesterday and most people around me thought Mario did not have a bad game - he has been much much worse than that.

He often makes really great runs but does not get picked out by teammates. Similarly he tends to do a lot of one touch flicks and is critisised if these do not come off. If they work he is a genius, if not a buffoon.

Note that most City fans rate him, we know the damage he can cause to the opposition. When he gets a shot it is rare he misses the target.

Lawro needs to look at his bullying nature and change it - he's becoming a laughing stock.

Good luck in the Jan window but don't pay too much for Sturridge, he's nearly as good as he thinks he is!

  7. The main difference being Suarez performs for his team and plays well. That's why you won't see Ex LFC players looking to have a go at him. Balotelli is over rated. I do think they can go over-the-top in their damnation of him, but the way he played yesterday with a lack of effort and desire in a derby, you won't get that from Suarez and to be fair in general from Tevez who i think the Bench incident was out of character. Suarez may be a bit of an unsavoury individual on the pitch, but there are enough people having a go at him without our own doing as well. There's literally a queue of journos and pundits wanting to have a pop at him.

You're just going to have to accept that ex LFC players will be biased to LFC, just like Dwight Yorke and Dion Dublin are to Man Utd. Few like say Lee Dixon, Collymore, Pat Nevin or even dare-i-say Gary Neville present a balanced view. Fact is, they are LFC through and through so why would they unnecessarily try to hound out Suarez? And as i said sometimes you can put up with the unpleasantness (I'm not saying let it go unchecked) if they show desire and hunger for the team and a will to win for the fans. Like it or not, Suarez does this, Mario doesn't!

  8. There are times when you have a point, and sometimes a good one! Teves and Suarez are driven, motivated, with a lust for victory. Balto, who knows what drives him!

You don't like LS, and that's fine, different opinions are welcome, but to claim that he has caused more trouble alone than CT and Balto combined is a scream for attention in my opinion. I suggest that you take this further and list the individually questionable things LS has done on one side and CT (no need to mention West Ham) and Balto on the other side, if LS has caused his team more sorrow than the other two, then please compile a list.

  9. You don't half write some utter rubbish. You state that Balotelli has been a "whipping-boy" for months and then write some drivel about "all of a sudden" (does that mean "suddenly"?) Man City lose their first game and former Liverpool players say it's all his fault so he must be sold. Which is it? Has he been a "whipping-boy" for months or is this an overreaction to City's first loss? Personally I vote for option 3: the writer if this crap can't possibly miss an opportunity, however tenuous the connection, to slag off Suarez. Why don't you give it a rest, lad? Your crusade against the evil Uruguayan has gone way beyond boring. Even if it was still remotely interesting you won't change anything. At some point in the future Suarez will retire from football. He will be a multimillionaire and disappear into the sunset to live a life of luxury with his beautiful wife and family. You, on the other hand, will still be a bitter keyboard warrior.

  10. Lets face it most City fans want rid of Balotelli, but that don't give stuck up scousers the right to fecking mouth off at or about us now does it.

All you anti City fecks talk about class etc, but none of you or your clubs have any of it. Concentrate on your own fecking club instead of sticking your fecking noses in things that don't concern you.

  11. Why you continue to write utter dog shit day in day out?

Please fuck off back to the Man utd boards and write for your own team.

  13. I dont know about you but i like Mario. I never used to. In my own opinion i believe he is a confidence player and needs a bit of emotional support from his mates and the fans to preform at the level we all know he can do. And he certainly doesn't need slagging off at every opportunity someone gets. Am a Liverpool supporter and have wanted rid of Gerrard for the last 2 seasons now as he contributes very little to our game nowdays. He gives the ball away cheaply, never tracks back and looks like he can never be bothered unless he's playing for England or against Man u. But i dont see any critics calling him lazy or telling him to up his game. I would love Mario to play for us. But we simply cant afford him. And i know a lot of other Liverpool supporter's wont agree with me about Gerrard. But thier also a lot that do. Jaimie would you consider doing a vote to see how many supporter's think Gerrard should give up the captainsy to someone else who plays with a little more passion. And know before you ask i dont hate him, am just not afraid to admit the facts.

  14. He weren't that bad yesterday, well alright at least when compared to some of the proper stinkers he has had. But it just happens too much, these average-at-best performances from him. You got the likes of Dzeko and Tevez on the bench, for this guy and that is what I find baffling at times. Tevez loves to turn up against Man United and rub it in their face. Mancini may have had his tactical reasons for choosing Balo but time and time again the guy doesn't fully grasp the chances he has been given and ends up putting in wishy-washy performances. Its a pity really as he does have moments of genius but simply far too rough. Although, He is bit of a easy and regular scapegoat for Hansen, Lawro, etc, and it does get a bit of boring at times.

    ReplyDelete
  15. So Suarez just effed off to Uruguay for a couple of month because he didn't like being subbed did he? Like Tevez did? Or did he set his house on fire and act like a complete and utter t!t when he found out he got a girl pregnant? Or maybe he claimed that he's a genius and way too smart for everyone else? Not in his life will Suarez do those things and you stating he is worse than these two explitive deleted just proves once again your bias towards the guy. It's quite sad really. Now for citeh, they seem to have a lot of patience with these guys and considering the money they paid for them I can somewhat understand. On top of that, Tevez seems to have come around. Mad Mario however, I don't see what is so great about him in the first place that you couldn't buy for half the money they paid for him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. you're right about sturridge. you mentioned that he doesn't get picked out when he makes a great run, i sympathise with his team-mates here. the problem, in my opinion, is that if they give him the ball, a good move or good passage of attacking passing, often breaks down as they haven't a clue what he is going to do with the next move or where he is going to go next. he is more of an individual than a team player, which on his day, if his head is in the right frame, can be a super talent at work or if he isn't interested, can be detrimental to the whole team. for the harmony and balance of your side, he has to be removed. there are too many big egos vying for pole position, mario, gawd bless 'im, is like the spoilt child of the classroom, always doing whatever it takes to be noticed first, the attention seeker. yes he is young and is paid far too much for someone who hasn't done a huge amount to warrant it, that dampens the hunger.........please take note mr. raheem sterling and your 'advisors'.

  18. At no point does the article say that Suarez has been described as bad for dressing room morale. It says he has 'caused more damage' - Cheating in the World Cup, biting an opponent, racially abusing an opponent, diving, constantly arguing with refs etc. I still love him though!

  23. C'mon guys when he scored agt utd in the 6-1 drubbing, he was a genius & now he is useless. City has to pay the price of buying players without thinking. One article says that sell mario on the 1st of jan, my ques is that who will buy him. I dont think even rednapp wants him. City have a bunch of sore losers as after van pierse strike, I even saw tevez kicking jones. We didnt do all this when we lost to city last season. City fans and players must learn how to behave well not only when they win but also when they lose.

  29. Compare his form on Euro and in City. Difference? First of all in Italy he has a real coach- Mancini should be in Lecce. And pressure, in City it's tremendous, every player has competition in two players worth at least 25 each. Add his crazy head(big issue) and the fact that with his wage he can afford almost everything you get a player who could win golden boot underperforming regulary. And make no mistake- he knows everything about football and still is young and could be best in the world, if he goes to a normal surrounding with a good manager(and psychiatrist), he will be.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i know the reason for bringing Suarez into a post is because it easily generates comments but this comparison between him and Balotelli is ridiculous for many reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Must just point out something to the mindless people who don't understand football. Suarez did not cheat in the world cup, It was hand ball, he got sent off, the other team got a penalty, they missed, he celebrated the miss, his team won. How is that cheating? Every thing was with in the rules of the game, if you handle the ball on purpose you get sent off. if you do it in the area you get sent off and the opposing team get a penalty where's the cheating?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thank you so much, though it is not rocket science so many "experts" do not understand that... But same people praise dm when he makes 'smart' foul in the midfield to prevent conceding..

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow Jamie, not even a good comparison, we can call Suarez a cheater at worst but unlike Balotelli, he gives his best effort. he embodies the fighting spirit that Liverpool needs while they are undermanned. He seems to be a positive member of the locker room. In your effort to make an unbiased opinion of Suarez, you are being really unfair to him. Balotelli! Balotelli! really, come off it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. BTW I am not saying cheating is okay

    ReplyDelete
  35. More dumb crap writing from Kanwar the Manu fan posing as a LFC fan. You will never change Kanwar. I don't know why people get sucked in so often.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Who cares if you "still love him", you loving him says nothing about the damage he does to his club. The main arguments made against Balotelli is that he is toxic to the locker room and that he seems to play like he does not care sometimes. this can not be said about Suarez. Suarez is a controversial player but you can not question his passion and dedication to whatever club he is a part of. Plus he does not like fireworks or golf.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What Balotelli did is embarrassing, if he did it once or on occasion, but you know he will do it if he doesn't like being subbed.
I am not for get rid right away option, but they need to discipline him.
Liverpool players don't do that, and I can understand why our former players are disgusted by it.
If City can not get him in order, they most likely will get rid.

City can do that, they can easily replace him with Falcao if they want, they have the money.
If Ronaldo did it, would you write an article to justify it?
Ronaldo is the kind of player whom you can even forgive such a behavior, for a simple reason - the team needs him badly !
Mario is just not that good.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If you look hard enough you will see that it is not just ex-liverpool players slating Balotelli. Just about every article iv'e read about that game has had something negative to say about him. I watched the game and he was terrible, always is. You cannot compare the work ethic of a player like Suarez to Balotelli, it's why Suarez is so much more revered and it's also why people are more willing to look past his faults.

As for ex Liverpool players not criticising Suarez, there is plenty of evidence of them criticising him. Also why should they criticise him just becasue you want them too, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm sure you have noticed that it is not just amongst ex LFC players that your feelings regarding Suarez are the minority

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would like to say that Suarez is in no way worse as Ballotelli. For one thing lets look at the real world. Suarez gets payed quite a bit of money, but for all his wages, I say he has earned every bit of it because he is dedicated and loyal to the cause. Ballotelli on the other hand, what kind of message does he send out when he acts like that earning big bucks. And the sad thing is, he continues to rebel. Atleast Tevez has made some amends maybe, but Ballotelli is just a waste of time. How many 21 year olds out there would DIE to be in his shoes, and how many would act as spoilt as him? He has the demeanor to never be humble, at least Suarez knows where he has come from.

Another note, Suarez may cheat, but why not take it from game to game instead on resting on past crimes? He's cut out a lot of his antics, and a little remorse and forgiveness should replace all the sniping and gutter talk.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Baloteli is a scapegoat, all of a sudden all city's woes is on his shoulders??! Real culprit is Mancini & his tactics-Yaya Toure has been stifled, selling De Jong was a mistake. Persisting with Baloteli also erronous-Tevez & Aguero should have been obvious starters. Also City's transfers have done them no favours, Jack Rodwell is another overhyped English player who adds nothing, not sure if Mancini had control of the latest purchases but they've definitely missed a trick!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Whats happened to lawrensons hair? The guy needs a serious grooming, looks like he,s been on a two month bender, lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. Everything you've said about Balotelli and Tevez is tabloid press exaggeration/embellishment, not fact.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The comparison is not ridiculous ; how can it be when no comparison is made?! I wish people would read things properly; where in the article do I make any kind of direct comparison between Suarez and Balotelli? I don't. My point is simple:

    * Suarez has caused more grief (IMO) than Balotell.

    * Despite this, Dalgish's cheerleaders in the media do not attack him like Balotelli.

The overall point of the article is to highlight gross bias and hypocrisy amongst Hansen et al. You're focusing on the wrong thing, which explains why you've missed the point.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well done. You've just displayed the attitude of world class enabler, i.e. someone who justifies and rationalises the negative behaviour of their favourite players, and by extension condones and encourages it.

Forget the 'rules' of football - objectively, Suarez cheated. You know it, I know it, and everyone with an hint of objectivity knows it.

    Cheating definition:

"Act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, esp. in a game or examination"

Suarez acted dishonestly AND unfairly in an attempt to gain an advantage for Uruguay. It is cheating, end of story.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The idea that Balotelli is 'toxic to the dressing room' is media talk, peddled by pundits. Show me one comment from any Man City player that suggests he's bad for dressing room morale...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Don't be so precious. It is not a dig; I've used Suarez as a *valid* example to illustrated hypocrisy.

    ReplyDelete
  47. How do you know that Balotelli is 'toxic to the locker room'? Could it be that you're just repeating what you read in the press?

    ReplyDelete
  48. so why are your accusing suarez, without proof either

    ReplyDelete
  49. you are using suarez as a bad example, especially as a so called "liverpool supporter". Why not make joey barton an example? oh thats right you only slate liverpool players

    ReplyDelete
  50. The point of the article was to bring to attention what media pundits had to be said about balotelli, then your conferred off to tevez and in the end brought up suarez to bring comparison. Maybe you should just stick to posting transfer news buddy

    ReplyDelete
  51. Proof? Be serious. Everything I've 'accused' Suarez of in the past is factual (Diving/cheating at world cup/biting someone/giving fulham fans the finger/insulting Evra by making a reference to ethnicity/8 match ban/refusing to shake Evra's hand/dangerous stamp-like tackles)

All factual. I don't need to list these things every time I mention Suarez. In any event, your bias and hero worship prevents you from any objectivity. If you weren't biased, you'd see that there is no comparison between Suarez and Balotelli in the article.

    ReplyDelete
  52. No you've got it totally wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Pretty fair comments

    ReplyDelete
  54. so writing that suarez has caused more damage is not a comparison? On another note anyone who listens to mark Lawren or reads his articles will find that he is the opposite ofbeing biased towards liverpool, he actually gets lots of quick because of this.

    ReplyDelete
  55. whatever its classed as its got nothing to do with favourite players. I would not hold it against any player who takes one for the team and understood Neville doing it against us in the derby. Suarez was profiled on tv prior to the fa cup final and it was discussed. The panel of strachan etc all said they would want and expect anyone playing for them to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Fair point, just seems like suarez is always the player you highlight whenever theres something negative to be said, the guy has well cleaned up his act & players like bale & now cazorla for eg seem to slip under the radar, c,mon jamie, luis plays for the club you support, iam not saying he should be exempt from criticism but ive seen article after article by you condemning him

    ReplyDelete
  57. My view is that Suarez, although seemingly petulant and prone to controversy, doesn't appear to affect team performance in a negative way. For whatever reason these commentators have it in their mind that Balotelli actually has a negative impact on the way the team play, that he drags down the team attitude and that perhaps he doesn't contribute in appropriate ways i.e. in a tactical sense. For me there is very little evidence to suggest that Suarez is similarly guilty. He works very hard and does things on the pitch that helps his team. He is tactically supportive of his team mates and plays for the club, not just for his own glory. He may take elaborate tumbles and appear overly dramatic but I don't see that being a problem for the team. He doesn't get into scuffles with other players, the whole Evra affair was a question of using the wrong words. His ear biting incident is behind him so not an issue for LFC. He doesn't get red cards for rash tackles so it's really only his tendency to mount up yellows that hurts the team in any way. The way I read the criticism of Balotelli is that his attitude and actions on the pitch are actually detrimental to the team performance. That's not my view of him as a player, just how I read the comments of the pundits. We can accuse Suarez of many things but I don't think being an on-field problem is one of them. He's just a bit of a drama queen when it comes to getting tackled.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The difference is that Suarez gives his all for his team, Balotelli doesnt. So its not hypocrisy. They should sell him and free up a striker spot, although anyone they bring in will invariably be another mercanary. so it might just repeat the cycle.

    ReplyDelete
  59. There's an old saying in sports...'If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough'. No one talked about Ridgewell the other week and then West Brom get burned by Carzorla. Karma is a bitch...just ask Rio! lol

    ReplyDelete
  60. seriously can i ask are you a liverpool supporter dude because you always seem to write shit with a negativity towards liverpool , firstly suarez battles hard for his team ,balotelli doesnt he needs to grow up , you come across like suarez is the only cheat in the premier league ,he is the only one that does bad tackles , he is the only one that says racial remarks towards players like lmao where your head at , yeah he got an 8 match ban why because he was honest enough to come forward an admit he used a word towards evra , unlike john terry whos offence was plain as day to the cameras and what does he get basically a slap on teh wrist compared to suarezs punishment , a certain eric cantona karate kicked a supporter where does that compare to suarezs misdeminors , you come across he is the only one that has hand balled a ball on the goal line , why dont you use the list of players who have all commited offences for these acts plus many more as examples ,instead of suarez a player who plays for the club your supposingly support

    ReplyDelete
  61. You mean like shirt pulling, claiming a thrown on or corner knowing you clearly had the last touch or deliberately tripping/kicking/obstructing someone?
Hmmm by definition in your world a foul wouldn't exist now would it and we'd all be cheats right?

Or is there an exceptable level of cheating your ok with JK?

    Do explain....

    ReplyDelete
  62. 8 match ban was rubbish. Look at Terry, does worse and gets a 4 match slap on the wrist. It's all corrupt and misguided by the media. Refusing to shake Evra's hand is another media deluded scenario. Evra didn't want to shake his hand either. Dangerous stamp-like tackles? Mate do you watch Premier League? This happens every game week in every match. If anything, he cops more flack from other players and gets no justice from officials. He's a player that is willing to do what he can to benefit his team. Cheating in world cup is a great example - why? Because it benefited the team. Happy to be the scapegoat - thrives on it! And while you may not be comparing the two directly in the article, it is implied that Suarez is in the same class of troubled players as Balotelli. He is in fact not. Why? Because he is an integral player in the Liverpool squad, actually loved by the fans, his skills are desired by all managers and most importantly he displays passion, enthusiasm and heart. Balotelli is a large 10 year old who likes to play with fire.

  65. That is because they are sports pundits and not spoke person for LFC. Therefore they can talk, write, criticize any player, manager, from any team. even officials.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think they are two completely different distractions.

Suarez may be a blatant cheat but you can see how desperate he is to win for his team, every time he steps onto the park. I am biased here but that's because I am a Liverpool fan. Hypothetically, if he was to move from Ajax to Chelsea, Chelsea fans would love him too!

Balotelli, on the other hand is just not a team player at all. He sometimes can look like he wants to play well, but not ALL the time. His arrogance, I believe, far out-weighs his respect, for absolutely anyone. You just cannot manage him at all!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Go support another team and stop talking shit about suarez

    ReplyDelete
  68. shut up jamie!! you are a suarez hater so stop taking digs at him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ridiculous example. No one with Suarez on their team would hate him. Team morale, he is the epitome of "taking one for the team" ie deliberate hand ball to win a match

As for the racism charge, Messi was accused of exactly the same thing, and using the exact same word as Suarez. Don't see Barca trying to flog off Messi

Balotelli is a distraction to their team, the way Diouf was to us. Thats probably the best example we had

Maradona & messi score with there hands but no its Ok genious..Suarez saves with his hand what a cheat then Rio refuses to shake Suarez's hand aah its ok Suarez started it he is stamped by Huth but oh no he deserves it..so the topic here is about Balloteli and what he brings to the team hell he even wanted to fight his Kolarov coz he wanted to take a free kick until Kompany intervened never seen Suarez do this i believe he's a team player and youll hate him against u & love him when his on ur side FACT

  71. Tevez did not spend months in Argentina refusing to come back? So where was he? I'm pretty sure Mancini would like to know as well because he kept saying that Tevez was in Argentina. The police are also in on it? They made a fake report that Mad Mario's house was on fire? Balotelli did not say that he doubted whether his kid was his?

He said: 'A few days ago I learned from third parties that Raffaella was pregnant. So I decided to contact her and it was only after I had questioned her that she confirmed it was true. I am very disappointed as I don't think it is right that I should learn this after four months.'

'I will accept full responsibility after a paternity test

How kind of him to openly call his ex a slapper.

I bet you Suarez is behind it all. He's just making these angels look bad so he can go on with his evil cheating and racism while people are looking at the COM stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  72. You compare by implying, which is subtle, bordering on devious. Unfortunately that qualifies you as a journalist by today's sad standards. You also cannot admit that you are wrong, which is even sadder. Hansen and Co have had a lot critical to say about Suarez, so they aren't ignoring his faults. However, he is a team player and passionate about winning, which is the big difference between him and Mario. Stop making a devil out of Luis, it is becoming to look personal. Instead, do some serious journalism and give us something unbiased and interesting to read.

    ReplyDelete
  73. We will never know how the players feel about him, unless they say something. But it must be pretty frustrating when a player with his ability, just doesn't even bother trying sometimes. That was City's biggest game of the season so far, and is a potential title deciding game (not saying its done and dusted now), and from what is have heard, he didnt put in any effort. I think it just goes to show the lack of passion from some players in playing for a club. Seems like he only cares about the pay check.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Are you not comparing the amount of grief each player has caused their respective club? Is that not a comparison?

    ReplyDelete
  75. No, that is cheating. The rules state you cant handle the ball in football unless you are the GK, he handled the ball, therefore he cheated, yes he was punished for it. But that doesnt mean he didnt cheat.
Having said that, all players, and I mean ALL players, cheat in football now. I dont think you would find any player, who hasn't, fouled someone on purpose, known they have fouled a player in the box but kept quiet, appealed for fouls when its not, appealed for corners & throw ins when its not, pulled someones shirt, handled the ball attacking or defending, seen the ball go over the line but kept quiet.
The sad fact is, is cheating is now part of the game, but it just seems to be the attacking players that get villified in the press.

Suarez does what ever he can to win a game, and i respect the fact that he is so driven, yes it can push him too far sometimes. But if anyone was in a situation where you needed to win a game to win the league, and you just saw the opposition get the ball across the line, but the ref doesnt see it. Would you own up to it being a goal? I know I wouldnt, and I dont think anyone would.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Rules state you can't hit someones' leg and when a player does it, it is not cheating- why this is?

    ReplyDelete
  77. There are managers around the world that all want Suarez however none of them would touch Balotelli with a barge pole, he is un-buyable at the moment in the opinion of most managers. This highlights why they comparison between to two is more than a little silly.

Balotelli is a disruption to the team where as Suarez will do anything and everything to help his team.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I agree with you, that was my point. In that everyone cheats in football these days. YOu just have to accept it and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Chelsea fans love Terry, so they'll love anyone!

    ReplyDelete
  80. 'we City fans know quite a lot about how to behave when losing'

What, like coin throwing and pitch invading fans

    ReplyDelete
  81. Actually I we disagree- I don't think it is cheating, it is doing something against rules with consequences. Diving is cheating- intentional foul and handling the ball to prevent goal is not.

    ReplyDelete
  82. i'm a city fan ,but to compare suarez to balotelli, are u serios? suares gives 100%on the pitch balotelli doesn't always,he is like a pregnant lady with his mood swings, pure garbage as far as i'm concerned, mancini too is not up the par we need to get rid of him like yesterday.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Amazing hey Jamie ? IT MAKES EVERYONE WONDER JUST WHY SUCH A LARGE NUMBER OF CLUBS(PREM & ABROAD),ARE ALL CONCIDERING MAKING A MOVE TO SIGN HIM ??? "STRANGE THAT IS IS'N'T IT !" Q; WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS JAMIE ???

    ReplyDelete
  84. I think there is a video in youtube that batolelli fight with micah richard n adebayor in training ground..not enough proof?dont effect dressing room?

    ReplyDelete
  85. yeah, we all got your hipocrisy

    ReplyDelete
  86. Comparing Balotelli to Suarez....hahahahahahahahahahahahaha....there's holes all over this story...think with your head not with your heart

    ReplyDelete
  87. Jamie your becoming like diarrhoea both annoying and repetitive, i guarantee if john Terry had have hand-balled on the line and England went on to win the world cup he would have been knighted for his so called "cheating". Suarez was desperate not to lose, i wouldnt consider it cheating. he got sent off and a penalty was given! You sound like someone who has never played the game and therefore have no idea wat it takes to give your all for the team. Im Irish, i didnt even give Henry abuse for his handball a few years ago. France went to the finals and we didnt, i would have cheered from the rooftops if robbie keane had done it. I believe you love your image of having unmatchable moral fibre to the point where it doesnt matter what suarez does he can not make up for past mistakes.

Suarez can be his own worst enemy at times i agree, but he gives 100% for the team, and quite frankly i wish we had a few more with his work ethic, drive and ability, just maybe with a little less petulance in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  88. You did mention Suarez in saying that they failed to criticize him therefore you did draw a comparison there is no doubt about that.

    ReplyDelete
  89. How many times a game do players cheat defenders are usually the biggest offenders we never hear much about them.
What bugs me is there is so many incidents that go unnoticed yet as soon as Suarez does something oh geez.
Really anyone who wants to follow a fair sport should follow cricket.
I do believe some of the criticisms laid on him are fair some are harsh but one things for sure he bleeds Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Funny how no one mentions Thierry Henry who deliberately handled the ball in the game against Ireland that set up the goal to send them through to the finals. No one labels him a cheat, which is exactly what that was.

    ReplyDelete
  91. "Eviscerate"... !!! Stop showing off, Jay.

Suarez doesn't let his team down on the field, he always works his balls off, and I don't recall him ever getting hammered in a club or setting fire to his bathroom.
Nice try, though. It must have killed you not being able to criticise him Sunday evening.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Forgot to add:

"I'm an ENABLER. And I'm PROUD".

    ReplyDelete
  93. On recent form, there is absolutely no hypocrisy, can't remember the last time Suarez dived, not to mention stamp on another player as you so eloquently put it. However on recent form, Balotelli is all of the things mentioned about him.

    ReplyDelete
  94. He wouldn't make it at a smaller club either because he is so arrogant he wouldn't lower himself to be at a lower club. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes to play in the Qatar or Chinese league though, with all the money to splash at him.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Who would have thought Gary Neville would become a liked and unbiased pundit? Wonders will never cease. I saw him before the Manchester derby and although he referred to Utd as we, he actually made some solid points both good and bad about both sides.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Class is throwing a coin at Rio Ferdinand, class is also coming onto the pitch and going straight for the ref, then when that failed, straight for Ferdinand instead. Very classy indeed. By the way, most Liverpool fans are not anti City, we are anti Utd and therefore would rather see City do better than Utd.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Actually, the beginning of the season, a lot of fans on here, myself included, were criticising Gerrard. So sorry, but your argument falls flat.

    ReplyDelete
  98. That's just the problem though, he wasn't that bad, he was still probably City's worst player and as soon as Tevez came on, the game changed in City's favour, but you are right, this was one of his better games for what that's worth.

    ReplyDelete
  99. To be fair, City didn't buy him without thinking as Mancini gave him his start at Inter.

    ReplyDelete
  100. But it was Rio, so not all that bad.

    ReplyDelete
  101. As Ruby said, as well as Hamann playing for City gives him the right to comment on City players too.

    ReplyDelete
  102. The fact that there is so much competition should give him the motivation to perform to the best of his ability day in day out. This shows how immature he is.

    ReplyDelete
  103. OK, but then how do you quantify the damage you say Suarez has caused to LFC? That is necessary before you can say he has caused more of it to LFC than the others to their respective clubs. Answer- You can't. It's an OPINION, not a quantifiable fact. Sure, the club was damaged by the Evra incident. But by how much, or how that compares to others' negative influences is just your opinion.

You blur the lines of fact/opinion quite often imo , whilst claiming not to. Plus you recall incidents which happened before he came to LFC as evidence he damages us. I'm sure Henry handled the ball twice in his career deliberately, and exaggerated fouls too. When did you last hear the media rush to call him a cheat. Or Carzola for that matter. Doesn't get mentioned much though, funny that.

    ReplyDelete
  104. How is Suarez worse than Balotelli and Tevez combined? Have you heard of Suarez's off-field antics? I certainly have not, and yet have heard a lot about Balotelli and Tevez's off-field antics. And you may say that this is media driven crap, but there has to be something for the media to pick up on.

    ReplyDelete
  105. And another thing, the quotes you have posted are more than likely taken out of context to prove your point. There are pundits and were probably asked the question about Balotelli as were hundreds of other pundits, which I would hazard a guess that at least 80% would have the same opinion, and that is what the pundits gave, their opinion, which as you keep pointing out, everyone has a right to.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I don't care about off-field stuff; has nothing to do with football. When it comes to on-field infractions, Suarez is far worse than Tevez/Balotelli

    ReplyDelete
  107. Transfer news according to Jaimie K, Suarez to be sold.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Since when is having a vocabulary showing off? There are certain words/phrases I love, and use a lot when I write, and whenever I have the chance to use eviscerate, I will. Love that word.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Ah yes, that old chestnut: 'taken out of context'. No chance. Hansen, Souness and Lawro all wrote columns specifically about Balotelli. They chose to do that - no one asked them any questions. And even if they did, what does that matter?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I suppose that makes it all ok then(!)

    ReplyDelete
  111. To be fair, he has a point. What Henry did against Ireland was a handball, he did it intentionally, but subtly, and because of that, wasn't caught. That is cheating. What Suarez did was blatant, pure instinct, didn't try to hide that it was a handball. What he did in effect is no different to a defender being the last man and bringing down a player on the edge of the box. Stops a goal-scoring opportunity, gets sent off, gives the other team a chance to score, but also a chance that his team will stop the goal. This is not cheating. He broke the rules, he got punished. Henry broke the rules and because of his cunning, he got away with it. This IS cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  112. That is the problem in your opinion but not mine, I didn't think he was the worse player. Yaya, for his status in the team, was the worse suspect for me, bar one or two of his run forwards. Another player who I thought was just as bad as Balo, if not worse, was Nasri.

    ReplyDelete
  113. By definition, cheating is an act of deception or trickery, which means that Suarez's handball in the World Cup, was not cheating, there was no deception or trickery in what he did.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Breaking the rules isn't cheating. Cheating is breaking the rules by deception or trickery, ie breaking the rules in order to get away with it. The handball that Suarez did in the World Cup against Ghana was not an act of deception or trickery, and therefore cannot be called cheating. It can be called breaking of a rule, which he was duly punished, but breaking of a rule does not necessarily mean cheating.

    ReplyDelete
  115. How do you know he is not "toxic to the locker room"? However his off-field antics are negative to the team and bring the club into disrepute.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Where in my article did I suggest, hint or imply that my my Suarez view is a 'quantifiable fact'? Obviously, it's my opinion.

Do I need to put 'IMO' after every single sentence? I won't do that because it insults the intelligence of readers. Most people, I'm sure' can tell when something I write is opinion.

Also, at no point did I suggest that stuff Suarez had done pre-Liverpool had damaged the club. If I have, as you contend, please paste the lines from the article.

Additionally, for the sake of accuracy, I didn't say that Suarez has caused 'more damage to LFC'; I said:

'A player who, throughout his career, has caused more damage that Balotelli and Tevez combined'.

The above statement is undoubtedly true: Suarez has caused more on-field problems for his clubs that Balotelli and Tevez combined.

    * Cheating in World Cup
    * Biting another footballer (7 game ban)
    * Suspended by Van Basten at Ajax for altercation with team-mate (Luque)
    * Regular diving at LFC
    * Stamping on opponents
    * Giving fulham fans the finger (1 match ban)
    * Evra situation (8 match ban)
    * Refusal to shake Evra's hand (Cub forced to apologise)

    etc.

Please list Tevez/Balotelli's on-field infractions throughout their respective careers. Off-field incidents are irrelevant as I've only ever focused on Suarez's on-field behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
  117. How do you know? How do you know Suarez didn't mean his WC handball? On the balance of probabilities, and taking his entire career into account, it is more likely that he did it deliberately than not. Saying it was 'instinct' is the typical response of a Suarez apologist. Watch the incident again: Suarez deliberately moves his hand to the ball to stop it.

Whether it is conscious or unconscious, it is a dishonest act. Plenty of footballers are in the same position in games, but they don't use their hands like Suarez. Why?

Plus, he did it *again* in a recent game for LFC (disallowed goal v Southampton). Was that instinct too?!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Jamie You didnt reply to my post?
its ok i didnt expect you to have answer to it.
    But lets try again...
Jamie of course suarez meant that handball no doubt about it...

Now if that's cheating then he's no different to all 22 players on the pitch who during 90mins at some point all unfairly pull shirts, kick opponents with no intent of getting the ball, deliberately make blocks, go down like they have been shot only to get up like nothing happened 1min later....

Are they all cheaters Jamie or just Suarez?

    Do answer...

As I'm struggling to see your point... What was so special about Suarez again?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Yes, they're all cheats. What is your point?

It's about prioritising. When it comes to changing a game/sullying the rep of the sport, Diving/deliberate handballs on the line etc are far worse than shirt-pulling. When faced with all these infractions, you have to prioritise and tackle the worst issues first.

This is the same in any sphere of life. For example, Murder, rape, armed robbery, shoplifting and defacing public buildings with graffiti are all crimes, but murder/rape are the most serious, and as such, more resources are used to tackle those crimes.

Just because everyone cheats is no reason to ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sorry Kid, your "cheating in the WC" doesn't fit in your argument. He didn't cause damage to "a club", he only caused damage to your perception of what is right.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Please learn to read things properly: I did not say the WC issue damaged the club, so you point is irrelevant.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Sorry mate but your writing skills need to improve: You have listed Suarez wrongdoings just after stating that "Suarez has caused more on-field etc, etc."
How is that supposed to be understood?

    ReplyDelete
  123. No, it is your comprehension skills that need to improve. I stated:

"It's funny how we never hear Kenny Dalglish's buddies publicly eviscerate Luis Suarez, a player who, throughout his career, has caused more damage than Tevez and Balotelli combined.

Please, point out the part of the above sentence where I:

    a) Say that Suarez's WC handball damaged the club.

    b) Mention LFC in any way

My point is simple: Suarez has caused more problems his teams (on the field) than Balotelli and Tevez combined, and the fact that Lawro et al have never slated him - but feel free to regularly diss Balotelli - is hypocrisy.

    ReplyDelete
  124. you actually do in the reply above.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I honestly believe you don't know you're doing it.

Take a look at your list of misdemeanours. Show me your evidence that his 'stamping on opponents' or 'regular diving at LFC' has damaged LFC?

You may believe, as many do, that we have not been given penalties etc because of the media driven reputation, but no real evidence of damage beyond your impressions (right or wrong) but

Most people would view that list as your 'evidence' backing up your statements. But it's at least partially, presenting opinion as facts. It's your list of indisputable evidence. Ironically, the rationale put in brackets for some but not others, helpfully highlights which ones are opinion based

By the way, you missed the other point entirely. I said that in order to state that Suarez damaged his employers more than others have, you would need to quantify the damage, otherwise how do you know which is greater? And since the 'damage' based on an individual's opinion, quantification is impossible. That was the point of my original question.....

    ReplyDelete
  126. Interesting to take a quick look at Balotelli's ON field behaviour. There is one off field entry, but since you included Suarez' fight with Luque i left it in

*Fined £100,000 for throwing darts at players from an upstairs window

*Refused to play in Kiev saying he was allergic to the grass

*At Inter, gestured to his own fans, threw his shirt to the ground after semi final CL win v Barca, and stormed off down the tunnel

*Suspended from Inter's first team in January 2009 due to his behaviour

*Stamped on the head of Scott Parker. 4 game ban

*Sent off in the second leg of City’s Europa League tie against Dynamo Kiev.

*He received a red card in the same game for violent conduct after a clash with Youssuf Mulumbu

*Against Arsenal, sent off for lunging at Bacary Sagna.

Lost count of the teamates he's had fights with. At least 5...

Wonder which player did more damage to his team/team morale?

And that's just Balotelli. Add Tevez' self imposed 'holiday' and its not exactly clear cut.

In my view Balotelli did far more to damage the fabric of the team than Suarez ever did

    ReplyDelete
  127. in answer to your challenge a)

I quote:The above statement is undoubtably true: Suarez has caused more on -field problems for his clubs that (sic) Balotelli and Tevez combined.

    * Cheating in a WC

    Your words.

(It's only a few posts up)

    ReplyDelete
  128. You're including standard red cards? Scraping the barrell. If you want me to include all of Suarez's red cars throughout his career, I will. Lots of players get sent off; Steven Gerrard is Liverpool's most sent-off player in history. They don't count, nor do off-field incidents that cannot be verified other than through tabloid gossip.

'Lost count of the team-mates he's had fights with'

Were you there? Did you see them? Or are you just quoting the press?

Also, Tevez's holiday was not 'self-imposed' - It was authorised by City, as a statement on their website confirms:

"Indeed following his suspension, Carlos requested, and was given, special dispensation by the Manager to take leave overseas"

    http://www.mcfc.co.uk/news/team-news/2010/december/carlos-tevez-a-statement

Additionally, Tevez did NOT refuse to play for for City against Bayern, and the PFA - which forced City to reduce his fine for the alleged offence - confirmed this. Gordon Taylor said:

"If he had refused to play that would have been the charge and that would be gross misconduct. That's as serious as it gets and could be a termination of contract. The charge was momentarily refusing to resume warming up. He never refused to play. He was desperate to play. They are trying to say he refused to play, which is serious and why he was vilified. No evidence that they presented suggested that"

City caused that situation; they were responsible for Tevez's demonisation in the press, and lied about the actual offence. On top of that, Mancini's public comments on the issue ('He'll never play for City again!'), were unprofessional and ill-advised. No wonder Tevez went on the defensive.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Jamie give it up you and admit it when someone proves you wrong. You will get more respect.

    ReplyDelete
  130. "hypocrisy"?? Are you sure this is the correct word to use? Can you explain what you mean, as the use of the word seems out of context with the point of the article to me.

    ReplyDelete
  131. You mentioned it in your reply above to Mike. Maybe you are getting caught with all the replies, but mate its right there

    ReplyDelete
  132. Thats interesting...
So you consider a deliberate handball to be a worse offence than deliberately kicking someone to stop them gaining an advantage?

So your ok with assault but draw the line on injuring a man made leather ball using your hand/arm?

There seems to be a extreme disparity in the way you view level of FOULS.
Or is it only where Suarez is concerned?

    Regarding prioritising fouls...
How many goals have been prevented and gained by shirt pulling from corners/free kicks etc ? Plenty!
And how many go unpunished because its done on a SLY in a dishonest manner? Hmmm plenty!?

By your own definition It's cheating and is ruining the game.

How many players have been injured or have retired from tackles designed to stop the player rather than get ball?
Deliberate Handball in goal scoring opportunities are rare comparatively and hardly go unpunished, as compared to shirt pulling which happens 90 times a game on ave ;)

So if you want prioritise then deliberate hand ball comes way down the pecking order where 'CHEATING' is concerned.

Jamie No man I know slags his wife off to the world unless she is A slag...
Specially when she cooks, cleans and runs around trying to make you happy.
If you truly love Liverpool you won't slag of Suarez while he's sleeping in our bed :)

    Appreciate the reply btw ;

    ReplyDelete
  133. I didn't say that Suarez didn't mean that handball, what I said was that the handball was a blatant attempt to stop a goal, there was no deception involved, therefore, it was not cheating. And yes, the incident against Southampton was instinct, the commentators stated that too. By the way, the Joe Allen handball against West Ham, do you also consider that cheating?

    ReplyDelete
  134. No, my comment pure sarcasm and should have been taken as so. If you had read a previous comment of mine, you would see that I don't condone the thuggery that occurred.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Why not add links to those columns then, so we can see the exact context that they were said in. And what does it matter? It matters greatly. Comments being taken out of context have caused and will continue to cause bad blood between players and fans or players and their club. As a journalist, which is what you are, maybe it would be in keeping with the high standards of this site to back up the quotes with links directly to the source.

    ReplyDelete
  136. If City lied about the refusing the play incident, could they not have lied about Tevez going awol? Especially if it was to appease their fans? This is a weak argument you give up. Sounds like you are fighting in Balotelli's corner and not giving an objective account.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I know, I know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  138. Joe Allen handball? Are you  for real?

    ReplyDelete
  139. For the love of god: they are linked in the article already.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Jamie, genuine question.

Are you actually a Liverpool supporter? I don't think I've ever read an article you've written that offered a pro Liverpool opinion.

I appreciate that being a fan doesn't mean being blind but the frequency of your vitriol suggests that you're not a supporter in the slightest.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Show me where I said that Tevez refused to play then Jamie?

I included the red cards because they hurt the team. Suarez has never been sent off for LFC as far as I can remember. As for the fights, YOU mentioned Suarez' fight with Luque , were YOU there?

Considering how many people you call hypocrite, that takes the biscuit...

And off field incidents DO affect team morale. Suits your argument to dismiss them though, since Balotelli has a list of them as long as your arm...

    ReplyDelete
  142. Well, you included a handball, hardly the worst offence, alleged 'stamps', which are standard tackles some of which didn't lead to red or even yellow cards, 'diving' , none of which led to sendings off, and the off field incident with Luque, so why am I scraping the barrell?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Now thats an articulate, factual and accurate comment. Jamie take note you might learn something and stop posting drivel!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I don't know the details but when your team mate is walking into the tunnel early and arguing for free kicks/penalties, it might rub you the wrong way. Not to mention when his conduct in game whether it is a rash challenge or lack of effort/focus, can annoy his team mates. If every manager including Mancini and Mourinho can not handle you it says something. Suarez has problems but dedication to team and team mates is not one of them. Btw I am a Balotelli fan so it is not me defending Saurez.

    ReplyDelete
  145. You're probably right. Would be interesting to see how an angry mob would react to his poor attitude in Qatar.

    ReplyDelete
  146. You will probably get your wish. Next summer Barca or someone will offer 40 mil. for Suarez and he will most likely leave if we are not in CL.
He can not waste his carrier playing EL and being called a cheat by most fans in the country, while Bale, who has more yellow cards is considered model professional.
If insults come from other fans we can understand, but to have our own fans hating is just ridiculous.

He does have a way of getting in trouble, with or without his own fault, but he is by no means spoiled child like Balotteli.
Suarez could very well leave, but what than? Who will replace him with an immediate effect, like he had on the team when we lost Torres ??
It will most likely mean yet another season without CL qualification for LFC.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Bale has more yellow cards for diving*

    ReplyDelete
  148. For normal people yes, for him (immature him), no.
