Good news: Juventus front-runners to sign £7m LFC star. Let him leave...?

With reports that Italian clubs are tracking Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates, the Uruguayan international could be the next Kenny Dalglish signing to leave Anfield.

Reports in Italy, Portugal and the UK claim that Coates' future at Liverpool is far from secure, and the Daily Mail states:

"Liverpool are in the market for a centre back with concerns over the future of Sebastian Coates.

"The Uruguay defender is attracting interest from Italian clubs.

"Juventus are among them as they look to replace 34-year-old Lucio"
.

Coates - who signed for LFC in a £7m deal last summer - has made only 9 starts since signing for the club last Summer, and with the first-choice partnership of Martin Skrtel/Daniel Agger firmly entrenched at the club, that's not going to change for a while yet.

Liverpool have been linked with quite a few central defenders over the last year, which suggests that club is not entirely convinced that Coates is a long-term solution.

I personally don't feel that the Uruguayan is solid enough to be a first-choice defender for Liverpool, and his performances have proved that over the last year and a half. With Coates in the team:

* 30 goals conceded in 19 appearances.
* 1.5 goals conceded per game.
* 3 clean sheets in 19 apps.

Football is a team game, but the presence of Coates in the first XI doesn't seem to add any extra solidity to the defence.

Additionally, is Coates really credible competition for Skrtel and Agger? Do you think they go into every game thinking 'Damn, I better play out of my skin or I could be replaced by Coates!' ? I don't think so.

Skrtel made mistake after mistake earlier in the season that led to opposition goals; he basically destabilised the defence, and cost Liverpool vital points, but was he dropped? No.

Clearly, Rodgers didn't think that Coates was good enough to step into the breach, and that's a problem. Skrtel and Agger need genuine competition for their places; it isn't coming from Coates so it needs to come from someone else.

Another thing to consider: the club needs money for new transfers, and along with the likes of Joe Cole and Stewart Downing, Coates is arguably expendable, and the club could possibly get a few million for him without missing a beat team-wise.

The writing is on the wall for Coates: Rodgers has repeatedly stated that young players will get their chance at Anfield, and the rise of Suso, Wisdom and Sterling proves that. Coates, however, continues to be ignored, which doesn't bode well for his future at the club.

If Coates, Downing and Cole leave over the next 6 months, Jordan Henderson will be the only reminder of Kenny Dalglish's catastrophic transfer spending.

Should Liverpool sell the Uruguayan?

  1. He will never improve until he gets a run in the side. I would also like to know how many of the 19 games he was playing in his natural position and how many was he paired with Granddad Cara?

  2. I'll never forget that QPR goal!

It's strange because against City early on he was picked ahead of Carra but since then he has been overlooked. Strange.

  3. For that kind of money, straight away. We are covered in that area.
Gomis is great player, by the way, excellent!

  4. Cant remember for how much money we signed him, but 7m is good enough to sell him, hes been making some terrible mistakes even scoring an own goal so why not, and he wasnt dalglish signing, comolli brought him here, just to clarify.

  5. If this is actually true then again , an example of BrenDom being petty and not willing to see the bigger picture......

  6. Rather have Kelly and Wisdom as understudy if it means getting some cash flow for potential in-coming transfers. Ideally should have a minimum of 4 centre backs in the squad. It is hard for any player to establish themselves without a decent no. of consecutive games in the side and considering that he has had to play a lot of times alongside the ageing Carra, its hard for a young defender like Coates.

  7. It seems Rodgers wants to rid us of every signing Daglish made so i cant help wonder if Suarez will turn up on this list..

But to sell Coates would be a mistake he is potentially a great partner for Agger, he just needs to be given some games alongside him, its becoming more and more obvious the Rodgers is one of them managers who wants his own players in even if they are inferior to the ones he lets leave so he can say "this is what i built"
And according to various newspapers etc (i know its not the most trustworthy sources but sometimes they are right) he has now upset Sterling which would not be a surprise as he seems to have that "i always know best" attitude, which we all know he doesnt, when first appointed i really wanted him to succeed but the more i see of him the more i think he is just a blind eyed arrogant up his own ars3 wanna be idolized gimp.

  8. Playing alongside one of the greatest players in that position in last 2 decades could only benefit him. He is slow now but his experience is vital- vs Chealsea he was the skipper, he was all around the pitch, talking, giving advices , even picked up Sterling when he was down in the mid circle... Don't underestimate Carra, please...

  9. He was a Dalglish signing, as was Carroll, Suarez, Henderson, Downing, Enrique.

Dalglish is on record they were all his signings and not Commolli's

  11. rodgers just wants rid of any of ds signings at any price it gives him more excuses ,nice to see carroll get injured whilst out on loan another rodgers f2ck up

  12. I think Rodgers needs someone to sit him down and say "do you really know what your doing" this guy has real potential!

I also think its unfair to put all your stats together from his appearences and then not point out them appearences were generally in weakened teams, its like your trying to convince everyone he is a liability, the fact is players need time and games to adjust (especially when your young) and though he has had time he has hardly had the games, he is a ball playing central defender who had a great reputation when he joined us and i personally think he would develop into a great partner for Agger, the biggest problem he faces is Rodgers and his apparent need to rid us of every player Dalglish brought in (and i agree players he brought in need to go, but not all of them), and the likes of you who back Rodgers so much you will write an article like this that points completely to the negatives about Coates and yet no mention of the fact he generally plays in weakened teams and has hardly been given a real opportunity, yeah he may have made a few mistakes but at least give him the chance to learn, i mean Skrtel was in my opinion awful when he first joined and can still be now yet he was given time to adjust and learn the game in this country, i also realise it seems we need the money but would still not sell without giving him a real opportunity.

  14. This is a rumour! From the daily mail! So it Is definitely not true stop saying Rodgers is stupid.

  15. well said. And where does it say Rodgers wants to sell him? It says LFC are concerned he will leave and are therefore looking for a replacement.g

  16. Selling Coates will be a major lost, this kid blessed with potencial talent! Why don't sell Downing and Cole only? Not him, he's could lead our back line in another 3 years if Brendan play him regularly.

  17. You write some utter tosh Kanwar. He's 22, which is extremely young for a Centre half and playing second fiddle to the best defensive partnership in the league. Carragher being on the bench above him will be resolved when he inevitably retires, which is going to happen soon. Seba is a full Uruguay international, with a Copa America medal, and Young Player of the tournament to his name with a bright future ahead of him, he's going nowhere.

  18. I know this might seem a crazy idea to a lot of people, but I actually think he can make a good target man up front. It's not the Rodgers way of playing football but it can help us win matches. For example against Everton, he provided an assist to Suarez, which was unfortunately, wrongly disallowed. He looks like he has goals in him.

  19. Coates is a talented, promising defender who has performed very well when he has played for Liverpool. It would be a big mistake to let him go - and I am sure it is one mistake Rodgers and Liverpool will not make.

  20. Good points JRC, could not agree more

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't know about Seb Coates playing upfront, however I am sure he will be a wonderful defender for Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  22. None of that means anything. The bottom line is he's made 9 starts in 13 months, wheras the likes of Wisdom, Sterling et al play almost every week. Even if Skrtel left, I doubt Coates would replace him in the first team.

  23. Texeira was a Daglish signing. if we get 17 million for Carroll then this lad is worth at least the same or will be in a few months, Henderson will prove a good buy as will Enrique, Downing was 10 million wasted

  24. Getting men into the box is the answer and always has been, Suarez has been alone for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Coates is a better player than Wisdom, anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about football, Wisdom is not our best right back, nor the second best, nor the third best and. Johnson - kelly - flannagan are all better.

  26. look above my comment i clearly say its not the most trustworthy source, but give the fact Rodgers is useless you never know, and i will say what i want as its my opinion if u dont like it read something else

    ReplyDelete
  27. It doesnt say he doesnt either... and history suggests he will be out of favour due to who signed him

    ReplyDelete
  28. oh dear, oh dear. Wisdom is like a breath of fresh air. He is calm and composed on the ball, he doesn't stray out of position, he is probably the best tackler in the team and he can pass the ball to his own team-mates - all qualities that the other "better" right backs don't have. Must be some other reason that you don't like him

    ReplyDelete
  29. coates is probably the most talented centre back we have.great potential, only 1 season and a bit part player.
needs to stay and play more

    ReplyDelete
  30. just read C Howard's other posts and he is obviously drunk or mad, or possibly both

    ReplyDelete
  31. Dalglish chose the players. Commoli negotiated the transfers and fees!

    ReplyDelete
  32. What games have you been watching? The last few games ive watched he isnalways getting caught out of position. He was so bad in one of them Rodgers took him off. Never strays??? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  33. He would still know about the fees involved so he still gave the go ahead either way you look at it, and they were his choice of players, so there his signings

    ReplyDelete
  34. To be honest Carras a legend and always will be BUT i'd be pissed off if I was Coates and Carra was picked ahead of me. Carras literally on his last legs Coates should always be ahead of him. Coates is capable of becoming world class if he is kept and given games, he has so much potential. Coates is better then all of City's centre backs bar Kompany, better then all of Utd's centre backs bar Vidic, it would be a stupid thing to let him go.

  35. Carra has been one of the best premier league defenders, he's got the experience, and I personally prefer to see him start games when playing against top 5, I was happy when I saw him starting against Chelsea two weeks ago, because that was a wish of mine that I saw Rodgers making it come true!.. and guess what! he performed beyond my expectation.
Yes Coates does not have the right to be pissed of if carra's selected ahead of him!
but still i don't agree selling him, because he's shown that he'll be one of the best defenders plus the ability to score and assist!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sebastian Coates is much better than Henderson,Joe Cole and Downing. I believe that he able to play any position as versatile player.Very good scale in the air or hijack the ball.He also can assist or score the goal. That is the diffrent about coates. But i don't know why B.Rodgers never like to keep playing this player.I want to see he replace for Lucas Leiva during injured but it was not happen.B.Rodgers must trust for him....let be often play him.DEAR LFC,DO NOT SELL YOUR FUTURE STARS .PLEASE...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Coates has the potential to be one of the top defenders in the world, so selling him would be just plain stupid but i am not against loaning him out for a season to some other premier league club where he can play more regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Because of fan like you who blindly support the deadwood causing the slum of Liverpool!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. the usual gratuitously offensive anti Dalgish remark.HODGSON signed Cole. It was Dalglish who signed Suarez and Henrique
    Get your facts right

    ReplyDelete
  40. Carroll is not good just face it, Kenny made only 3 good signings Suarez, Enrique and Bellamy. Would you have dropped players like Kuyt and Maxi just to justify the price tag of overpriced overrated mid-table crap like Downing and Henderson. I see you commenting on Jaimie's blog but you seem like someone that should be supporting Chelsea or Manchester city as they want instant success too, if it weren't for the fuck up made last season by both Dalglish and Comolli then we would have had a bit more money to spend instead Rodgers has to play past it players and mid table garbage and you think we have the god given right to win every game just because we are Liverpool. It doesn't work that way. We are building a team this time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If teams like Juventus want him surely that has credit. People are too quick to say "sell, and get a big name in " - being honest with our current form, and it hurts to say, but who wants to come to LFC - it was Coates' and Suarez's national team mate who snubbed us for the Saints.

This team needs to rebuild, and that has to be done by players who want it. The young academy players get their chance because at the moment, and realistically are the only ones who will give 110% They are the ones with everything to prove, and to progress at our club.

We have no big transfer pot, so will have to hunt for cheap talent, and raid the academy. We need to get a grip, get back in the top four. Then players will want to come to LFC.

My biggest concern - look to Leeds and Nottingham Forest.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The CB role takes time to mature into and i cannot believe they would want to let him go.
BR has been great at giving the younger players a run and has strangely overlooked Coates i can say i do believe given time Coates will be better than Skrtel.
This team is rebuilding and i keep hearing they are going to need time well so are the Coates and alike but they are not going to improve without experience.

  43. we can't sell Coates. He will be involved when the FA cup ties start. There will be more games coming up and we will need to rotate and be fresh. Dagger playing week in / out is a concern as he is so injury prone.
Coates should not be sold. Defensive backup is crucial.
He cold be moulded into a defensive MF role as he can play on the ball.

  46. Eyes wide open here. He is not a starter, but he contributes, very much. Carra is a legend, not a deadwood.
