Peter Beardsley is still held in very high regard by Liverpool fans, and anyone who had the privilege of watching him play will remember what a fantastically exciting player he was. Beardsley is now reserve team coach at Newcastle United, and barcodes striker Demba Ba has admitted that he's a big fan of the Anfield legend.
In an interview with the Newcastle Evening Chronicle last night, Ba - who has constantly been linked with a move to Liverpool over the last year - enthused:
“I didn’t know who he [Beardsley] was or what he had done when I first arrived here.
"Then I watched videos of him play and I go back to Hatem [Ben Arfa] and say, I found someone more skilful than you: Peter Beardsley.
And then I show him the video of Beardsley playing and he sees what an amazing player he was – small, but quick and with very quick feet.”
I agree with Ba here - Beardsley was definitely an amazing player, and he was an integral part of the superb Liverpool team of the late 1980s, causing havoc alongside the likes of John Barnes, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge, Steve Nicol and Steve McMahon.
Luis Suarez is very similar to Beardsley in the way he plays: superb close control; excellent in tight situations; great dribbling skills; quick feet etc, but if I had to choose between the two players, I would take Beardsley every day of the week.
It almost brings a tear to the eye watching the following footage of Beardsley. What a fantastic player:

Great player, sold him far too early in his career. Cheers Mr Souness.
ReplyDeleteYeah he is my favorite NUFC player of all time! Did he play for another club? I didn't know that.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your article about former United player and Geordie legend Peter Beardsley.
ReplyDeleteBetter than Luis? Absolutely. Technically they're probably as good as each other but Beardsley was the type of player that could make others perform better as well, Suarez is an individual.
ReplyDeleteAbsolute quality,we could be doing with him now. Similar control as Suarez.
ReplyDeleteOne of his goals I never tire of watching was against Brighton in Keegan's last game : chases a long through ball, slide tackle to win it, gets up and keeps ball in same movement then chips the keeper. A truly brilliant goal.
ReplyDeleteI would add a link, but I don't have the inclination.... :)
With Gerrard more close now Lucas is back, and a goalscorer in Jan- he'll have more assists. And so far he has created arround 35 goal chances(according to our official site) for his teammates, more than any other lfc player.
ReplyDeleteLazy git ;-)

It is a pleasant surprise to learn someone like Ba has watched videos of past players, something almost none of today's players do.
ReplyDeleteSuarez is not an individual, he just thinks faster and more intelligently about how runs should be made etc.
ReplyDeleteMost of the other players are just not yet on the same wavelength...
What a goal! Think Suarez is capable of it...
ReplyDeleteHey..... Less of the "lazy", please.
ReplyDeleteIf I was to come to Anfield, could I get a ticket for the Kop, how does that work?
ReplyDeleteAnyone?
I've got this goal on an old VHS tape (ask your dad) called 'Race to the Championship'. The camera angle is higher so the goal looks even better (more excitable commentary too). Looks like I was mistaken about the 'long' through ball - it was actually a decent pass from Keegan. ;)
ReplyDeleteFunny how the camera angle or commentary makes a goal seem better. My favourite of all time was Marco Tradelli v West Germany 1982. The commentary made it something special: "Scirea......Bergomi...Scirea...they're appealing for offside, not given....Scirea, across to Marco Tardelliiiiiiiiiiiiii....... TWOOOOOOO NIIIIIIL TO ITALY".
But if you see the same goal on the Official Fifa film (low camera angle, opposite end) it's quite an average goal.
That's why Suarez could do it at international level where Beardsley could not. Amazing how people seem to remember very good players add would class. Suarez is world class, Beardsley was not.
ReplyDeleteHow do you know they don't?
ReplyDeleteLovely player! Come on guys...Which is your top 11+6(subs) Liverpool players of all time?

ReplyDeleteno you can buy packages for about £150 pound were you get a match ticket and over night stay in a hotel you can also book a tour of the ground if its a once in a lifetime trip think you would find it worthwhile checking out the official lfc site for details
ReplyDeletetake some f"CKING BEATING
ReplyDeleteI think he was being sarcastic...
ReplyDeleteSounds great, but Kop ticket is vital part of the plan-way I watch football would probably be told to sit and shut up even in the Kop.. Thanks again, I'll go check. though I was hoping for some shed, not hotel- money is the biggest issue..

ReplyDeleteOpen new tab-lfc...
ReplyDeleteThanks again..
i,ve changed mine already so many great players to choose from were not far apart thou
ReplyDelete100 without museum and hotel, Kop ticket, and a meal afterwards with an ex player(just hope it is not Jovanovic).. Sounds good, maybe I'll see you by the end of a season...
ReplyDeleteDidn't see your reply... I reckon those are options for UK citizens?
ReplyDeleteMembership fee for the OSC and not being sure when... thanks anyway..
ReplyDeleteMy grandma bakes pies better than Suarez...
ReplyDeleteOk. Sorry I couldn't help more. My mate was in a priority scheme and got maybe 6 matches a season.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if it still applies.
Luckily we don't pay him to perform any sort of culinary task.
ReplyDeleteThanks for trying anyway...
ReplyDeleteit will be a good player from 70s 80s jan molby or someone like that
ReplyDeleteAh, Race for the Championship. I have every one of those that was released on VHS, plus every LFC season review vid from 89 onwards. Classic stuff.
ReplyDeleteFirst XI: Grobbelaar, Hansen, Hyypia, Nicol, Kennedy, Souness, Barnes, Beardsley, McManaman, Rush, Dalglish. Subs: Clemence, Fowler, McMahon, Keegan, Gerrard, Aldo
ReplyDelete------------------ Grobbelaar
Nicol --------- Hansen ---- Hyypia ------ Kennedy
---------------------- Souness
Macca -------------- Beardsley ------------ Barnes
--------------- Dalglish
----------------------- Rush
Damn, I want to cry right now..
ReplyDeleteDon't need to ask Linker mate. Got my own mind and I'll say or again what did Beardsley do for England.? How many goals at Italia 90. Suarez has excelled at every tournament he's played in. Seems like all you sheep have copied off the site moderater and have a skewed view of Suarez.
ReplyDeleteThat just shows your weak asse knowledge. One orthodox midfielder and then you wouldn't know who to bring on out of Gerrard or McMahon ha ha. Yea right.
ReplyDeletewhat a player! the goal at the kop, when he smashed it off the underside of the bar vs everton, we went beserk, what an atmosphere that was! i was deaf for two days after and lost my voice singing, all because of dear old quasi!!! ugly bugger, beautiful talent.
ReplyDeleteI particularly liked the large gold cigarette lighter they presented us with at the end of that season.....
ReplyDeleteDamn, forgot Hyypia and McMahon.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, you left out Ray Kennedy our classiest player EVER......
I think a "Worst Ever" 11 would be more difficult to choose. We've got probably a squad of 50 over the last 15 years..... :(
ReplyDeleteYes, a serious oversight on my part.
ReplyDeletenot saying that at all suarez is fantastic but in my view beardsley was just a bit better but suarez as got time to overturn my opinion thats if we don,t sell him lol
ReplyDeletemacca? i would rather have skippy or paul walsh
