"It's not good enough" - Angry Reds hero slams LFC 'problems' after Spurs loss...

In his post-Spurs press conference last night, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers lavished massive praise on his players (again) for failing to win a league game, but like many fans, Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan doesn't buy-in to the manager's attempts to positively justify defeats, and the former Reds midfielder claims there are 'lots of problems' to be solved at the club.

Despite losing the game, Rodgers made it sound like Liverpool put in an amazing, unforgettable performance. He raved:

"I thought we were absolutely magnificent. I don’t think we can come here and play better. I’m bitterly disappointed for the players because they were absolutely fantastic. Some of our play was outstanding. It was a game that we dominated"

Praising players in such gushing terms after a defeat sends the wrong psychological message IMO. If they were 'magnificent', 'outstanding', and 'fantastic' in defeat, then where is the motivation to improve? It sends the message that losing is okay, and I just can't see how that is a good thing.

Rodgers claims that Liverpool 'could not have played better' - what is he on about?! Of course the team could've played better. Not conceding two sloppy goals and actually scoring from open play to win the game = playing better.

Players need to feel that defeat is unacceptable, but Rodgers' constant ego massage arguably creates a situation where they don't fear losing as they know they'll be praised anyway.

I'm not suggesting he should criticise the team in public after draws/defeats, but calm down on the exaggerated praise already! I want the manager to be angry about losing, even if the team plays well.

Rodgers also claimed the Reds were unlucky, and slated the referee for failing to give two penalty decisions. Discussing the game on LFC TV, Whelan dismissed suggestions that the Liverpool were hard done by, arguing:

"You can't just win three games out of fourteen and keep saying we're unlucky. There's something deeper than that, and some players have to start standing up"

The defeat leaves Liverpool in 12th place in the league, only four points above the relegation zone, and Whelan is not impressed:

"We’re three points ahead of Wigan, and they’ve been hopeless all season. Aston Villa are near to us, but they’re not LFC. We are Liverpool football club, and we shouldn’t be anywhere near Villa after 14 games.

"There’s an awful lot of problems, and it’s not good enough for Liverpool to be 12th in the league coming up to Christmas".

I totally agree with Whelan here: 12th in the league is not good enough by a long shot, but in many ways it's a false position, and I am confident that the Reds will start to climb the table over the next month.

If Liverpool are still 10-12th in mid-to-late January, then the alarm bells will (rightfully) starting ringing.

  1. Nothing but cold truth there. As I said in a recent comment, we need quality players and a more thought-out attacking plan, otherwise we are in a real danger of becoming a mediocre team in long term.

  2. if he took the time to watch all the games this season he would no that refs have cost us alot of points, until they start being fair we got no chance of fourth,br has praised his players as he knows you can play football well and the ref can still change the result and there is nothing you can do about it.lets see if he can start pulling the refs and show he is still behind liverpool and not take cheap shots at br.

  3. To be honest Jamie, I knew there was no way we were going to win as soon as I saw our line up.

This overpraising is really getting annoying. Every time I hear him speak all he gives is excuses and overpraises average performances. If get a D on an exam my teacher is not going to say I did "absolutely magnificent" is he?

    SMH

To be honest if we don't start picking up points we will be in the relegation zone pretty soon. Then what?

We need some class players to come in January. And BR needs a flipping plan B.

Tiki Taka can work very well if you have tiki taka style players like arsenal or Barcelona, but not Liverpool with the current team. We are so predictable at the moment it makes me sick.

    Rant over.

  4. We've had some very tough fixtures in our first 14 games and I firmly believe we will climb the table and finish around 8th again.
Is this good enough for liverpool though??
    Hell no!
Sell the dead wood, we all know who they are, buy players with courage and who WANT to play for liverpool and not just collect a fat salary to tread water

  5. The current game plan does not involve fast counter attacks but intricate midfield play which often slows down the attacks. This means that we have to break down defences which have had time to retreat and organise themselves. This in itself requires players capable of beating their direct opponent PLUS scoring capability. On current form only Suarez can do that. Goals win you games. Players capable of distant shots also help, but both Gerrard and Agger seem to have lost their shooting boots.

  6. the alarm bell started ringing after wba players normally put in100% for a new manager and mid jan your having a laught xmas, the next few games should be 3 points if not adios rodger thanks for your time but you came to early in your carear fsg also have to take the lions share of blame for this for giving such a high profile job to such a novice of a manager

  8. Hi. I'm not a Liverpool supporter, though my son is. I'd like to know what Liverpool supporters think on a thought I've had. I've felt for a while now that Steven Gerrard should leave the club. Don't get me wrong, I still think he's a very good player, just that at Anfield he's in a comfort zone, and he's also held up the team's development as he continues to be the midfield fulcrum. At age 32 Stevie G has at least two good years left in him. If he takes on another challenge now he'll still be a legend at Liverpool and could still fulfill his destiny by coaching the club. Just an idea (so no abuse please) that Liverpool will rebuild much faster without him and that he might discover a new lease on his footballing life elsewhere.

  9. 'magnificent' 'outstanding' 'fantastic'

This is not newly-promoted Swansea making their debut season in PL, Brendan, this is, respectively, a somewhat bigger club that has certain standards. Praising mediocrity as much as he does, is getting annoying.

Had to put up with constant 'bad luck' excuse with our results last season and now its both 'bad luck' and 'refs'. Fair enough, they haven't been great, the refs, and they need to improve but so do we, we have plenty of problems that goes beyond 'bad luck' and 'refs'. We need to help ourselves. So fix/improve what is in our control first.

  10. The 'stonewall' penalties yesterday weren't stonewall. Let's be honest about this. You can't keep on blaming the referees for LFC's problems. BR blaming the referees is unhelpful as it means the players feel as though they're doing enough, especially with all BR's praise, and they're simply not fighting hard enough and some of them just aren't good enough. If Downing had a sex change, she still wouldn't get in the England Women side.

  11. Agree FdotM - the line-up smacked of safety-first, whereas Spurs' approach from from the off was attack, attack, attack, and it paid dividends.

  12. If we are performing outstandingly, fantastically, magnificently and we have won 3 games out of 14, God help us if we hit a bad patch!!!!
BR is full of absolute sh%t and I for one am sick of it.
Anyone that lives in the real world can see we are a mediocre team with a mediocre manger and owners who don't appear to know how to save a sinking ship.
At least Roman A for all his faults seems to know what he wants and is ruthless in persuing it - wish FSG had half his passion to suceed.
PS - When was the last time JH actually set foot in Anfield? Speaks volumes about our absentee owners.

  13. Hi Sherry - I agree with you that Gerrard's untouchable status, and he's definitely in his comfort zone. The problem is the fans have made him bigger than the club, and no one at Anfield has the balls to do the unthinkable and put him on the sidelines for a while.

I don't think he should leave, but he should be subject to the same rules as everyone else, i.e. play poorly = on the bench.

  14. Honestly not that worried at the moment as I think things are taking shape. As somebody stated above, the refs decisions really have cost us this season. People are saying, we can't challenge for the top 4 this season (me being one to be honest) but we would be up there challenging if it wasn't for these awful offside decisions that are going against us. Wasn't sure if it was a pen for Gerrard but the one on Suarez at the end was a definite pen, so frustrating.

  15. The league position put's the frightners on supporters. The comparison with Hodgson is folly and not a path i would take ( not a reflection on SJ, he's a good poster). THe brand and style of play is light years away from anything Roy served up. Granted, it's quite easy to hit Rodgers with the lack of penetration and cutting edge card. i think there are good foundations being put in place and a good working ethos, with and without the ball. And with Rodgers a lot of those principles that Rafa brought in like control and pressing high are coming back. The team now has a purpose in games, the players have totally bought in to what the manager is trying to do,

The approach and ambition to win games is there for all to see. He's made mistakes with certain team selections i.e Downing at left back. What manager doesn't. He's under financial constraint, due to the cost cutting exercise implemented by the owners after the disaster that was 2011. There is no doubt he could adapt and look to play ugly and look to get points on the table, but i firmly believe this will benefit the club in the long term. Bring in players of superior ability ( i hope our scouts are better than the previous crew we've had), who fit the profile you want. The integration into the team will hopefully be seamless and relatively easy. We have also been desperately unlucky with officiating. I'm not one to crow about it, but the disallowed goals at Everton and Swansea (it was marginal) were poor from the officials. That's an extra 4 points to our tally. No point moaning about it. We have to get on with it.

The points total so far is embarrassing. That's a fact and it's not good enough. No point putting your head in the sand. It's abysmal and we are better than that. I just gave a short reply to what i feel is happening at the club and the faith i have in the manager in the medium/long term, but he needs to start winning games to keep the heat away. The next 7 games are very winnable and we need a heavy return. It's a results business and supporters will only tolerate " the performance was good" card for so long. That's the reality. Patience is required of course. I think Rodgers will take make us competitive. The signs are there.

  16. I agree on the overpraising of players. A bit of reality needs to be initiated. I'm quite happy with BR. It was always going to be tough. The club has been on the slide since 2009 and the ship continues to sink. They tried to stop the decline by bankrolling Dalglish to the tune of over 100M and we all know what happened. The league position put's the frightners on supporters. The comparison with Hodgson is folly and not a path i would take ( not a reflection on SJ, he's a good poster). 19. Didn't like the starting line. The usual individuals again failed to impress. I would have Shelvey on from the start, he at least has some passion and always looks like he will have a go. Sorry, but for me Jordan Henderson's best position is on the bench ! That sitter he missed could have altered the whole complextion of the game. I know that FSG got their fingers badly burned under the last regime, but I pray that they will allow Brendan sufficient funds to buy a decent partner for Suarez. He cannot be expected to hold the line on his own, and last night he just couldn't get his act upto his usual standard, and when he is off-key are chances of scoring deminish considerably.

  21. Spurs fan here, and I come in peace! Watching the game in full last night I certainly think Liverpool deserved a point. However... it's clear to see you are lacking 3-4 good players to take you to the next level (top 4) which both our clubs strive for. I do think our clubs are in a transitional state with new managers, and they both need to be given a full season.

Suarez is a brilliant player but if you can shut him out then your half way to getting a result. Gerrard looks like he has lost some of his drive on last nights showing, I really expected him to be driving you forward, but apart from the penalty claim he didn't really threaten. Perhaps the return of Lucas will enable Gerrard and Shelvey to push on and link with Saurez???

One thing I didn't understand last night was liverpool kept working the ball wide and crossed high into the box! Is this the style you have been playing this season, if so then why not keep Carrol?

  22. I see Theo scored again?
We had the right man for the job and had he still been here Theo would have been putting them in for us, not Arsenal.
I don't rate Adam, but I honestly don't think his replacement has been any better. Carroll? Well, he doesn't hit the net often enough, but he does scare opposition defenders enough to allow space for others to get into. Henderson and Downing? Their problems (now) are confidence related. They MUST be aware of how the fans rate them, so are probably scared to death of being played. Change of manager doesn't help players in that frame of mind. Had KD still been here, I believe their confidence and performances would have greatly improved.
I think Reina will be off this window, rumours that Arsenal may be in for him and he knows his chances of being at a 'club challenging' get smaller every window. Suarez has apparently got a £40M get out... it sounds like Torres all over again - offer new contract, include get out, get big wage increase, bugger off next window.
Say what you want about KD, FSG spent £47M in the close season to stand still.

  25. Spurs fan here - in peace.

Last night (I was there) was a game between two sides adjusting to very new regimes this season. Spurs have more cutting edge because players like Lennon and Bale are still doing what they've done for years - while at Liverpool players like Stevie G are having to adjust to new circumstances a lot more (though he still kept being in the right place at the right time all game long).

It will take time for both sides to rebuild their squads and establish their new ways of playing. But I'm fairly impressed by the degree of progress so far at both clubs. (I expected a lot worse from Spurs this side of Christmas - and from Liverpool, given their 8 game unbeaten run).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Stonewall penalties? I must have missed those. In the second half Liverpool had a lot more of the game but on out and out chances i'd have to say Tottenham deserved their win. Let's be honest here, the Gerrard header wasn't any good and if Lennon had put his foot on the ball instead of through it it would have been 2-0. I feel for Liverpool fans i really do. a once great club is being torn apart by an owner who couldn't care less as long as the balance sheet is going his way. On a plus note, you were lucky to not sign Sigurdsson. I don't think you've missed out on much there. A lot of spurs fans are saying he still hasn't found his feet at the club but i rather think he just hasn't found his feet. Dempsey was a miss though, he's starting to look like the player he was at Fulham. Liverpool need to cut their losses on a couple of players and start over. Look on the bright side, the CL is being revamped so you could squeeze in when the eztra places come up.

  27. the last few years has been a nightmare, we had one of the best manager in the world with rafa and easily the best for lfc in 20 years, then fergie gets worried and with the help of the media starts bashing rafa to the point where the rest of the country believe he is useles along with 50% of ungreatful lfc fans, if your not happy with being ranked number one in europe with two cl finals one of which we won,a fa cup win, finishing 2nd in the pl with highest points since pl started , plus finding some of the best players in the world at a bargain price, the FACTS are we had one of the best there is, a man who won two spanish title with valenca and uafa cup add that to what he did at lfc and all this in a career of about 10 years, we are in this mess now coz of sacking him, same as valencia havnt won it since he left and hadnt won it in years before he come there, people can and will have there own opinions but what ever way you look at it you cant argue with his cv, and clever people know he did it all with hardly any money, so to all the lfc fans who wanted him out and didnt want him back, well done you have your wish, but now look at us now, appointing hodgson was a joke as was rodgers, notice there is no media presure on rodgers poor start, why is that, coz they are happy, they only critisize lfc managers who actually do good for us, they want rodgers and hodgson at are club so protect him to further ruin or club, rodgers as a man seems ok and its not his fault as he was never good enuff in the first place, the owners of our club who like to take risks by not finding a world class manager , if i want a job done i find someone who is a expert in that trade, someone who has been doing it years with a proven record, i dont hire a rockie who has no past history of doing the job,

  34. Rafa Benitez was the obvious choice for Liverpool in the summer, yet FSG failed to even talk to him about coming back to Liverpool. Rodgers is finding it hard to make the step-up, but what did we expect - this is after all Liverpool Football Club and it is one of the most demanding jobs in world football.

That said, Rodgers is showing signs of coming to grips with the challenge and with major funding support THIS JANUARY from FSG could turn this round in the next months. I am shocked to see the short termism of Liverpool fans who were all gung-ho about the appointment of Rodgers yet now expect the man to achieve miracles with a team that has lost important attacking players like Kuyt, Maxi, Bellamy and (although here Rodgers has to shoulder some of the blame) even Carroll over the summer, with only Borini coming into the club from the outside.

So, instead of undermining the manager, I hope that Liverpool fans will back him to come good and instead focus their energy in making their voice heard to our owners, who need to provide the funding necessary to turn this Liverpool into CL contenders IN THIS COMING TRANSFER WINDOW.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Good point Neil - and refreshing to see well-intentioned fans of other clubs contribute to Liverpool fan sites. I can understand why Rodgers is looking to be more direct in the attacking third - and also think that Carroll would have been an asset for the team at the current stage of developments. The problem comes down to the failure of FSG (and perhaps Rodgers) to replace outgoing players like Carroll and Kuyt, so that all the good work on the pitch and the evident progress in the quality of play in the first 2/3 of the pitch is undermined by our inability to finish off the good work in the attacking third.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Let us hope your words are heard - or, even better, let's all make our voices heard so that the message is not lost on FSG.

    ReplyDelete
  37. glad you signed sigurd other wise we would have wasted more money lol

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why is 12th a 'false position' ? It's what we have deserved - no more no less.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm not sure why we really expect the team to be riding high in the Premiership. In the summer we allowed a lot of players to leave the club and we signed an inexperienced striker (Borini) who is now injured, we signed a young very average midfielder (Allen), we loan signed another inexperienced midfielder (Sahin) and along with a few teenagers from the academy and elsewhere that is now the squad.
Liverpool FC have the squad of a mid table team, hence why we are in mid table, if we take Suarez out of the squad, we are a bottom of the table team. We could have Fergie, Rafa, Maureen and Pep as manager but if FSG do not provide funds to buy top quality players then a top 4 finish is light years away.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Voice of sanity in the wilderness ... thank you Steve! I would add that Rodgers can only do so much and FSG need to invest in the team to get the cutting edge that we need to win games on a consistent basis.

Regarding Downing, I still cannot see what alternative Rodgers had, given that he (correctly) wanted Enrique to play further upfront and that Wisdom had been severely exposed in the game against Everton in the RB role (which meant that he could not play Johnson on the left either). Perhaps Robinson, a player I really like, but I cannot blame Rodgers for preferring a more experienced player in such a difficult game.

Who would you have played in LB?

    ReplyDelete
  41. No way, Gerrard can continue to be an important player for Liverpool in the same way that Giggs has been for Man Utd. The problem is that the lack of alternatives meant that Rodgers has to play Gerrard too often (even in Europa League ties) and cannot play him in his best position. The return of Lucas and, hopefully, the acquisition of a player like Eriksen or Isco will allow Rodgers to play to Gerrard's (and Suarez') strengths, which should allow us to start winning matches we dominate but cannot seem to finish off.

    ReplyDelete
  42. At the end of the day we're not good enough. The truth will hurt but, we'll never be up with the big boys until we have owners who are willing to splash the cash & have a big name manager who recognises top quality players. Meanwhile we'll slide down the table until we get relegated. Wake up & smell the coffee. Rid the club of its US owners and get serious owners in along with a top rated manager. Sorry just my opinion.

  43. BR need's investment from FSG it's as simple as that.. Yeah patience is running low and this praise for players who are putting average performances need's to be addressed. 45. FdotM i love your comment. Tiki taka is a brilliant concept and i thank Brendan Rodgers for trying to introduce it at Liverpool. The only problem is that we have players who are not really suited to play Tiki-taka. One touch football is definately not happening at Anfield. The thing about one touch football is that it requires that there is a lot to movement off the ball at all times. After watching a Barca game and then watching a Liverpool game I notice a great difference in technique. Our guys mostly seem to have a hard time getting the ball out of their own half. On many occasions we have even give the ball away in very dangerous areas. I can't blame everything on the team though because for many of them Tiki Taka comes as natural a talent as does landing a 747 on a runway in windy conditions comes to the average joe on the streets. We need to recruit more technically sound players who are comfortable with the ball on their feet. Signing players he has worked with in the past is obviously not the way to go for Brendan Rodgers. i sure hope we are not linked with any more former players because we all know those who were brought in have performed so far

But Hendry ego couldnt take the fans chanting KKs name every week and has now got us into this position ... 49. Absolutely spot on in regards to Rafa! Although one of Rafa's obvious weakness is his constant changing of players every purchasing windows, and undeniably buying some really crap players not even worthy of playing in any decent championship teams, we must not overlook his tactical genius and vision in many other aspects of his game. He has brought in world class players as well, and set up a youth team perhaps only second best to Barcelona. Its us fans who sometimes can be more astute in seeing what Rafa meant for Liverpool, but somehow its a dirty political game for higher echelon management and previous diabolical owners who only destroyed what was good about Liverpool and care only about their own pockets! Current owners must not overemphasize on cost-cutting measures only, but if you don't support your manager it only means you won't have world class players on the pitch which equates to disasters on all fronts. The business of football is results, and all other aspects of the business will fall in line. We don't ask for Abromavich sugar-daddies, but responsible parents who demand excellence from their dependents but not providing the funds and access to appropriate facilities.

  51. Thank God Lucas is back, hopefully will start on saturday and time for allen to take a rest, hes been awful in the last 4-5 games, giving the ball away all the time, and rodgers must start playing more assaidi such a pity leaving a talent like that on the bench or not including him at all in the squad, cant afford losing more points but either way once again CL is gone for me, totally over.

  52. i know that Rodgers is a professional and will always keep his composure during tv face time with the media but i would like to see him lose his temper just once and berate the team live on the air for their lack luster performance. Just like last season again this season we are being beaten by clubs we once used to dominate. Rodgers appears to be is already begininning to sound a lot like Daglish as he tries pathetically to explain away our teams sloppy performances time and time again. Their exists only so many logical explanations about our poor play before the conspiracy by refs against Liverpool surfaces. It did many times under Kenny Daglish and it now has under Brendan Rodgers. The bottom line is that we do not have the right sort of players required to make a push for a top four finish. Massive overhaul of the squad is required.

  56. Good post.
We have downgraded our players season by season for the past 3-4 years.
Kenny's enthusiasm was enough to lift a lot of the players, and I truly believe he would have turned it round. Face it; the Suarez ban crippled us last season and we were still in contention for a decent finish 'til the Arsenal game. We battered them, chucked it away in the last minute, and the players simply gave up after that.

Henderson has such potential, but I fear it may never be realised because he is scared to make a mistake now. Pity he's not Scouse, cos the local lads always are cut a lot more slack - even the shite ones.
Kenny left purely because sponsors influenced FSG, and the sponsors got cold feet because of the backlash after the way the Suarez spat was handled.

If Suarez and Reina go, we may as well book our hols a bit earlier in 2013.

  57. The quality and success of a youth team depends on/proven by how well they do in the first team in the long run and how well the team does. Early days, very very very early days, to say we have perhaps the second best youth team in the world. Barca have the best set up because they have proven it with the success of the first team squad as well as the national team of course. Credit to Rafa and his men (segura, borrell, etc) for setting up the foundations of the youth team as its going in the right direction.

Thank you Steve, for putting it so well.
You're not giving BR a free-pass, but at least you recognise the difference between him an past managers, the current constraints, and the progressive work he is putting into the club.

  62. 'we are in this mess now coz of sacking him, SAME AS VALENCIA'

Sorry but no, just no. They are in this mess because of recession & debt.

Valencia reached the CL final two years in a row and had finished ahead of Real in one of those years in the table and finished alongside Barca in the table in the other year, just before Rafa took over. They were a top side along with Depor in La Liga at the time. Valencia have been a mess since because of financial trouble, two stadiums to juggle and finance (though I think one has been sold or something like that this year but the work on the new one was hit badly because one of the banks pulled out in September) hit hard by recession (real estate market over there has played havoc) like a lot of Spanish teams, etc, hence why had to sell players like Albiol, Villa, Silva, Mata, Alba, etc, and will desperately continue to do so. Imagine if they told Rafa that they sold Aimar, Baraja & Albelda (brilliant CM partnership), Ayala, Canizares, etc, who were key players for him and where would he be then eh. Rafa did a great job at Valencia but lets not make out they were the best because of mostly him, and that they were & are basically nothing because he wasn't & isn't there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I don't see what picture he was trying to paint about the bit on Valencia in his post but certainly wasn't the 'bigger' one.

  64. the point i was making was the last two times they one it was when rafa was there and they havnt won it since, and i would say a large part of them winning it twice in 3 years was down to rafa and his tactics, same as i personally think a large part of lfc wining champs league and getting to another final 3 years later and being ranked number 1 in europe plus highest finish since pl began was a lot to do with rafa, why do i think that? coz we hadnt done any of that for along time before and we and done it since, he broke alot of records at lfc most wins on arow most clean sheets on a row best defence in pl, the only records that have been broke since he left are the worst in about 60 to 100 year, and to me i am greatful to what i know he did for the club, prob 100 milloion on champs league money alone and thats without the money he made for the club in transfers torres alonso mashrano and didnt man city want ager and skytle for 30 million each and for me the club fell apart once we turned on someone who had done so much for us and any lfc supporter who does not respect this or who disrespect rafa is a discrace to our club and no nothing, what a bunch of little cu-ts ,rafa is a legend of this club and a great person and i fear it will be a long time before we have a manager capable of such hights, what a sad sorry mess this whole thing is ,if only we could turn back time, but oh i forgot alot of liverpool supporter dont want to turn back time do they? coz they must really like where we are at now compared to with rafa, muppets

    ReplyDelete
  65. 'we are in this mess now coz of sacking him, SAME AS VALENCIA'

I was basing my reply on this, which is a naive and narrow-minded thing to say as if you knew how hard the recession has hit some Spanish clubs, than you would know that this mess that Valencia are in has got very little to do with Benitez. So to rely on the fact that Valencia haven't won any league titles since Rafa left as some sort of conclusive compliment for Rafa (which was the point you were making) is narrow minded, which is the point I was making.

They haven't won it since and will have very little chance of winning it in the near future because of things that are outside of Rafa's managerial powers.

Before Rafa came along, they were already a quality side, along with Depor as well as the usual two.

As for the rest of your post, that has got nothing to do with my reply, so I won't bother getting into that even though I don't agree with some of the sensationalism. So I'll leave it there.

  66. Well put Steve, we all know that they will be some painful nights ahead as we just dont have the squad to compete at the top at present, however some fickle fans are just waiting for an opportunity to have a dig at the manager. He's still very young and will obviously make some mistakes along the way. If some fans cannot handle that then maybe their better suited supporting chelsea....especially those who still have immense loyalty towards Benitez for some bizarre reason. What was clear AGAIN in last nights game is the poor signings Kenny made in downing & henderson. I still find it hard to believe they play for LFC. As Ronny Whelan mentioned last night Jan transfer window is so crucial and if the owners fail to invest AGAIN and leave BR out to dry, then BIG QUESTIONS need to be asked of the owners!! Do they really have the financial power of managing our great club or do they need to sell some of their shares to allow other investors into the club.

  67. I think you're spot on about the confort zone and I think it's down to a number of things, one being Liverpool loosing icons such as Owen and more recently Torres to what they perseved as "bigger clubs". Gerrard stayed and I think, for that, the supporters are willing to give him that comfort. Id agree with letting him go if it was a case of this confort zone getting in the way of better players, but looking at the team we have. There isn't anyone in the midfield that could take his place. Nuri, Shelvey, and Allen are all good but none are showing they deserve to or even have the ability to uproot gerrard that is definately loosing a step or two. He's not "grabbing the game by the scruff", making driving runs into the box, or scoring screechers from 30yrds anymore, which might be why we're noticing this dip so much, but he's definitely better than the other options we have in midfield right now

  78. Pointing out Valencia haven't won the title since Rafa left and the current mess they are in is down to Rafa leaving, is just naive simpleton waffle. Like I implied, I don't agree with your so-called 'black and white' interpretation, in relation to Valencia. You may have been pointing to achievements but you were also sensationalizing and inflating those achievements (hence my criticism of your use of Valencia). I'm starting to repeat myself and I'd rather not but its simple to understand, that Valencia are not in this mess because of Rafa leaving. Football isn't that simple and the impact of the recession in Spain illustrates that. Like I said, I'm starting to repeat myself. So I'm done having to explain to you that it is far too narrow-minded to put the mess they are in down to the departure of Benitez, as that is nonsense in relation to their current mess. Yawn, I'll finish it there as regurgitating is getting boring from both sides.

  90. I just wonder how much confidence was shattered after Luis Suarez's disallowed goal against Everton. We struggle to score enough as it is so wrongly disallowed goals will be costly. I do think Henderson and Downing are good players when on form, but you have to question what they were starting for last night. We have better options available to us, however I am by no means calling them rubbish. It is wrong to judge Rodgers after 14 games, particularly as we have been hit with costly injuries and suspensions already (Lucas, Borini, Agger, etc.) As Jaimie said, January is a good indicator of where we are heading this season. Do we stick with a manager who is prepared to play youth players and get them accustomed to first-team football or do we axe the current regime and go for immediate results, whilst not guaranteeing sustainability in the future? Personally I don't see any realistic better options than Rodgers that are attainable, particularly with the budget the club seems to be working with.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I am pretty sure BR would not have let all them players go in the summer if he would of known how thin his squad would be. FSG wanted them out or off the wage bill so thats what happened. Just look at the striker he was promised but never got when AC went out on loan. I read quotes by the owners insisting there will be money avalible in Jan for new players and then BR gets asked about it and all of a sudden there wont be alot of money avalible in the jan window and loan signings are mentioned again. I wish BR would tell the owners to stuff the job because i'm sure no other manager would put up with this. I admire the way he as got the team to dominate most games playing lovely football. Yeah, we are not winning these games but are we really that far off? With investment in jan then in the summer i could really see us near the top of the league. We really are not that far off and i'd say £30m could do it. You may laugh but how many of our draws would of turned into wins with dempsey?????? The dempsey he was promised but never got.

    ReplyDelete
  92. First of all i want to begin by stating that i have a lot of respect for Brendan Rodgers and I like what he is trying to do at Liverpool. I just happen to believe that he needs to be more aggressive with FSG in getting the type of funds needed to buy the better class of players we need to get back to CL football. He also needs to stop making comments like Liverpool fans should not expect major spending this winter window. This comment is basically admitting that there won't be any more improvements in the squad. What we have is what we got. We all know you have to spend to attract quality. So lets spend.

That having been said I think that acquiring the services of Pep Guardiola would be the equivalent of a wet dream for Liverpool. The kind of dream one used to have when the hottest girl in class said hi to you back in the day. As a player who played tiki-taka football Guardiala possess a really good understanding of the philosophy. Having actually taken over the reigns of Barcalona after having no professional coaching experience on a senior level other than the Barca reserves a lot of people were surprised that he went all the way capturing the League cup in La Liga, Champions league and the Cope Del Rey all in his first season as coach. Gaurdiala is now the hottest property when it comes to coaching and it is a pipe dream to believe that he will want Liverpool. First of all a master tactician like Guardiola will want a club that will allow him to make the final decisions on transfers not the system in place currently at Liverpool where BR has to find out if FSG agree with his decision before they make funds available. (we all have Kenny to blame for this). Also Guardiola is said to have had a meeting with Sir Alex Fergurson in New York City during the summer months so i believe that he may want to coach at Manchester United when Sir Alex finally retires oneday. Nobody in there right mind would turn Guardiola down if he showed interest in coaching position at their team definately not FSG.

  95. Yay :) To be honest though, i don't think you've wasted money. I just think you paid too much for certain players. Carroll and Henderson are decent young players but you paid over the odds because they're young and English. Downing is probably the only player i'd say you wasted money on. Then again i could see the logic in it. A combination of Downing banging in crosses for Carroll makes sense, it just never happened though, dunno why.

I was at the game last night and I don't agree with BR one single bit. The ball retention was decent but no fluidity in our play. BR philosophy in tiki tala ste football is definity not working! We was creating far more chances under the guidance of Dalglish. As for BR signings the less said the better Joe Allen us not a Liverpool player he's s side to side passer and that's it I massively noticed that Gerrard cannot play with Allen that's extremely obvious downing playing left what was that all about ?? As for his tactics there wasnt any last night the man is clueless. Bring back Rafa with immediate effect before we're relegated.

"If they keep playing like that they wont be playing in red for much longer".

I prefer something like that than the over heaped praise BR gives his players.

For christ sake, so many glory hunters making comments. BR inherited major problems, he has to use the squad, and mix it with youngsters. He is playing great football, did you see the stats he achieved with the so called defensive selection. Do me a favour mate get behind the team. and if Whelan is god dam clever, which club is he managing since he left LFC ?? The team were brilliaint once we went two down, attacking down both flanks, we all know we are missing a goal scorere, nothings changed sine teh start of the season and wont until Jan. It wasn't BR 's fault, it was Ayre's fault for letting Carrol go without cover, and evryone blames BR. 102. the problem is all this Barcelona craze is making us a wannabe club instead of having our own identity. Its the same like we want England to play Samba style like Brazil. Tiki Taka style or whatever suits Barcelona and Spanish team well, due to their size and technical ability. Unfortunately British players have non of those traits and rare in terms of those quality. Unless Liverpool buying loads of Spanish players, we should forget about this style of play because we will suffer in the league. The worst thing is even if we are playing well with the style we can never beat tams from Spanish league as its second nature for them, as we witness in the final between Arsenal and Barcelona. Even now look at Arsenal they are starting to evolve into a different style as clearly its not working for them. Brendan should be more tactical in terms of team selection and so on. The last couple of years we can see that teams that do well in Champions League have their own way of playing wether its Rafa 4231, Barcelona tikitaka, Chelsea 801, Inter and Man U. Even Chelsea tried to play attacking fail n champions league. My feeling is that Brendan is almost like Arsene obsess with certain style of play when true winners are clubs with their own identity and style and managers who study the opposition and find ways to beat them but no route one football please.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Is Rodgers playing all the duds to attract interest, because his hand is being forced, as his Jan budget is very miniscule or nonexistent? If so, Downing could be involved in a swap with D.Bent ( wud bite ur hand off), as this would be short term solution to problems in the team(striker needed). Then if substantial money is available in summer, a higher calibre centre forward could be acquired.

  104. Too right shake their thumbs out of their arses not make them think they're gods bloody gift.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Another point is the reason why Rafa plays so called -ve sometimes is because we don't and can't afford to buy expensive flair players so we have to adapt, there is no point playing like Barcelona when we have 2nd rate players. Brendan should be more tactical to get better results. Why are we playing like Swansea and not Barcelona what have swansea achieve We should play the Liverpool way although we have to understand that in the 70s and 80s we were one of the richest and biggest club and buying the best players even Laudrup couldn't make it to Liverpool team. It's like Man U, Man City where they can solve big problems by buying new players. So for me playing like Swansea makes no sense when Swansea are not top 4 team. In terms of why we lack funds is because our last 3 owners made bad decisions. When we could sell Liverpool to Arabs we sold it to Americans and now we get to see how well the Man City develop. we can see to a certain extend Al Fayed does well for Fulham. One thing for sure the Arabs and Russian love football and Americans don't, they probably spend more money to Red Sox than to Liverpool. Balancing book for this year makes no sense when although Kenny did wastefully overpaid on players the money came from Torres sale so I don't get that. Its worse when we finish say 10th this year, not only we can't compete to buy top players we also will lose our top players such as Suarez. Please guys don't believe the owners 100% for all you know they got Brendan because he does not need money to manage Liverpool, while other managers even Rafa will probably demand a lot of money to spend on players. It could be the only reason why Brendan was chosen it is because he is willing to work under those condition

  108. Every time I see Henderson's name on the team, I immediately lose almost all hope of a win. A draw is as much as I allow myself to expect. Allen, Henderson and Gerrard is one of the most toothless midfield I have ever seen. 2012 Gerrard, I mean. If Lucas comes back and plays alongside Allen, either Gerrard will be free to create and support Suarez as an actual forward, or Allen and Lucas will need to train attacking plays and shooting until the throw up. Right now our most dangerous player apart from Suarez is Enrique... and that says a lot! I think Gerrard position by the end of the season will be supersub. 30, 45 minutes of all attacking display against a tired team. Alternate Suso and Shelvey on the attacking mid until one of them grabs the spot

    ReplyDelete
  109. It is obvious that after the game against Tottenham both FSG and BR convert one of the most successful and historical British clubs into a circus! FSG as the ownership is calling the fans, “come give us your money and we promise to reward you with a show that will cut your breath.” BR in the other hand is calling the fans, “whatever the level of our show will be we simply perform outstandingly no matter what you might think!” They should both stop living in their own illusion and sit down to ponder very seriously. Firstly they must stop fooling around the fans by handing out false promises. Secondly they must ponder whether they are big enough for this giant club; they already know they are not. So, it might be the right time for both of them to walk away before they will lose the least dignity and integrity they have earned until now as LFC’s servants!

  112. Why are Liverpool fans and their manager so desperate for a penalty? It's a virtual certainty they would miss it even if they got one. Doesn't anyone remember the penalty fiasco last season? One was missed after another. Of the team now, only Gerrard would have any realistic chance from the spot and he has gone back so far he would probably miss too. Be thankful you never get one - it would only add to the embarrassment.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I admire your optimism here Jamie but I think the game against Spurs was pivotal for where we would finish our season. We've missed our chance to climb up the table and stay connected to fourth place a couple of times already and now we're out of reach for the first time. Sure we'll win more games and we're bound to win more than three in fourteen the rest of the season but teams like Arsenal and Spurs, the clubs we should be competing with right now, have hit form before us and are now restoring their "traditional" positions. I honestly think we've missed the boat now and we'll be too far behind in January to do anything about it with bringing people in. I do believe that with this style of play we'll get there in the end but this season we'll be lucky to finish in the top half of the table.

  114. possesion alone will not earn us three points. i liked Mourihno coz he is after getting the three points not just that possesion. Please Rodgers, we want points.

  115. We seem to hear the same complaints and excuses all the time. The fact is that the owners need to come to the party and put in for funds for top proven players at international players. Quality is only gonna get us out of this mess, not experimenting with too many youngsters or no named brands with high price tags

  116. As far as being being goes top has 32 pts and we have 16 ! Says it all..

  117. Hey! I love that "Chelsea 801" !!!

  118. There will be no £30M - of that you can be sure!

  119. I rather think that as the young players come up to contract renewal time many will move on the greener pastures ( better wage offers). The contract negotiations with Sterling are worrying and I do believe that he will move on to a better contract elsewhere. FSG are not he one to pay top-class salaries - hence no top class in Anfield.

  120. like ive said before to you jamie you say your a hundred percent behind the manager but you put articles up with negative vibes towards him its so contradicting ,

  121. What annoys me is how the goalposts were conveniently moved for BR.
2 Cup Finals wasn't good enough because FSG wanted Champions League, but now they conveniently lower expectation by saying "8th would be ok", or "It will take time...".
Why will it take time? What they are basically saying is that they have appointed an inferior manager so we shouldn't expect too much from him. The mentality of our current manager (and indeed Hodgson) seemed to be that we should be trying to nick points away from home. We never take games by the scruff of the neck, or impose ourselves from the off, we just knock it about a bit and see what happens. Frankly I'm sick of some of the cowardly away performances inspired by managers who usually take teams to OT or the Emirates and think they have done well keeping the score down to 2 goals.
Is it so much to expect a bit of ambition?

  122. Gossy - what would you prefer, that I just praise Rodgers without any kind of critical evaluation? I am behind Rodgers, but that doesn't mean he's beyond criticism. I don't subscribe to the 'support = never being critical' concept; I treat everyone the same, which means praise and criticism where it's due, irrespective of who it is.

  123. We have downgraded players for the past few seasons, since Hicks & Gillet almost run the club into the ground! LFC were days away from a spectacular 'Pompey' style nose dive into administration - so many people forget this! FSG were the ones who stepped in and took us out of that situation. The Mansour's or DIC or anyone else could have done, but didn't. Why? Because the financial position at the club was in such a mess, which stretched back to the Moore's time (and got much worse under H&G). We are a club living on our past reputations and achieving results based on the level of investment (mid table at best). FSG declared when they bought the club that it would be run on prudent financial grounds (only spending what we earn) and that in effect means we will become a "selling club". Is that right? Wrong? I would prefer that we were a club fighting at the top of the league, but without the financial clout of Abramovic or Mansour.... thats not going to happen. The best thing we can hope for is that the FFP rules come in and some sanity starts coming back into the game globally!

  124. Accept your point, but with all the International experienced players at BR's disposal he could surely make us more competitive?
First rule of any manager is to make the team hard to beat. Playing with flair and "tika taka" could then have followed after, building on the confidence of a solid start.
BR came in and tried to teach a football institution how to suck eggs.

I remember the takeover well, because I was actually in the High Court the following day...

  125. I fully agree with you. Sterling is worrying me at the moment with all this talk that he wants a hefty salary. Could just be paper talk but if an offer from a London club or City came in would he be tempted? We have already lost out on signing Sigurdsson due to higher wages on offer at Spurs. Suso is another that I worry about. Although he signed a new deal, he has recently made the Spanish U21's, so no doubt the big clubs there will be sniffing around him. Looks like we need to raid Newcastle for their scouting team ;)

  126. Glad to see Ronnie Whelan talking some sense! People on twitter seem to think that they are gods gift to football just because they take the moral high ground and say if you arent a true fan if you slag the team off.

12th isnt good enough, if this was Hodgson, we would be calling him to be sacked! So why should Rodgers get it any differently? Results need to improve before January otherwise I feel FSG have a huge decision to make - back him by providing the necessary funds or sack him and let someone else have a go.

It could be that we cash in on our assets - Reina (25m), Johnson (15m), Agger (20m), Skrtel (20m), Lucas (10m), Suarez (40m) would bring in around £130m and we look to completely rebuild our side from top to bottom.

Players such as Butland, Walcott, Sturridge, Llorente, Martinez could come in and strengthen our team.

    Something has to give.

  127. what do people want?for us to say rodgers is doing a great job? what a good idea, this is the worst start in living memory ,if it wasnt we would not be talking about it, so lets all tell the manager what a good job he is doing and let him know this is ok that way we can have more of the same, no matter what the exuse the team is much better than this , if i take over a new job and the results are the worst in 100 years i would be sacked, are those still backing him saying that no matter how bad he does he should not be sacked? he has to be told so he understands that this is not good enuff, and as far as i am concerned he is on very thin ice but he seems happy as can be we the way its gone, not suprised we he is being protected by these exuses, once again the team is much better than the points we have therefore he is failing

  128. seriously if you had to ask the fans and players honestly who would you rather supporter and true Liverpool legend like KK (and remember FSG didnot trust KK and had Camolli neg the expensive deals ) and BrenDOM who had his best season with swansea last season 10th by the way and who thinks that 1 point out of 6 against swansea and spors is " fantastic " .....only the really clueless would say the latter ....my worry is that we will win the next game and then the pressure will be off again but for the long term is this guy the right guy for our team NO NO NO NO

  129. seriously ....seriously WHAT are you smoking cus i want some of dat ....its simple take 3 new managers that started with BrenDOM rogers this season ...Clarke , AVB and Laudrup .....all wth team you would agree that we hav a better team than on paper ..ALL REBUILDING but where are they 4th , 5th and 7/8th i think NOT 12th my friend ....Give me a Clarke anyday most of the talking done on the field and now on TV programs or to his darling media ...

    ReplyDelete
  130. thank soo True , why wasnt KK and Clarke give "time " to rebuild ...KK was a living pool legend who players wanted to sign for with BrenDOM even his pet Gylfie turned his back on him and is laughing now cuz he douge the Brendom bullet ...if KK got fired for not getting us top 4 the BrenDOM must be measured the same way .....simple .....for those who will shout that i as a pool supporter of 30 yrs needs to support BrenDOM ...I will if he delivers 4th if not he must b out ...

    ReplyDelete
  131. its simple do you think Clarke / Laudrup has lesser challenges at their teams ???? no top notch star player and where are they and they also where brought in this season ....the signs r not there as they are going backwards ...

  132. we've become swansea (V.-2)..pass and play wont get u anywhere unless u can be creative enough to break down defence in front of goal..even me nd my 6yr old nephew can keep passing in midfield..i hate BR playing style..
