'It makes perfect sense!' - Lawro urges Rodgers to sign £7m 23-goal striker

Liverpool face Newcastle at Anfield on Sunday in the latest in a long-line of vital league games, and Reds target Demba Ba will almost certainly play some part in the game. The striker is in great form at the moment, and Anfield legend Mark Lawrenson believes that he would be the perfect January signing for Reds.

Lawro has criticised Brendan Rodgers several times this season for the 'ridiculous' decision to allow Andy Carroll to leave, the former Reds defender is clearly not a fan of Fabio Borini either. He told the BBC:

"Rodgers spent £11m on Fabio Borini in the summer but, if I had the choice of him or Ba, who still has a £7.5m release clause in his contract, then I know where I would have been shopping.

"There have been reports they will try to buy Ba in January. If his knee is OK, which it appears to be, it would make perfect sense for them to try to buy him".

So far, the Fabio Borini deal is not looking like money well-spent, but to be fair to the Italian, Rodgers has played him out of position in almost every game, and in those circumstances, it's always going to be difficult.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool chief scout Alan Harper has watched Ba 'several times', which suggests that the Reds are still very interested in the Senegalese international.

Due to a ridiculously cheap buy-out clause, Ba will be available for just £7m during the January transfer window, which is certainly within Liverpool's transfer budget. Newcastle Boss Alan Pardew recently confirmed the existence of the clause. He said:

"There is that clause in his contract and it makes us vulnerable. It's still open in the next window."

Additionally, Ba will not be taking part in the African Nations Cup, which makes the possibility of his signing all the more attractive.

Ba would clearly be a potentially good signing, but you have to question why Pardew felt the need to remind everyone in public that the buyout clause still existed. If he didn't want to lose the striker, surely he would've kept his mouth shut on the issue?

Since arriving at Newcastle:

* Ba has grabbed 23 goals and 2 assists in 49 appearances.
* That equates to a goal/assist every 1.9 games

  2. Has Lawro ever criticized KD for spending 35M on Carroll, 20M on Downing, 16M on Henderson ? Simple answer : No.

Carroll scored 4 goals and provided 4 assists in 35 EPL games last season.

BR new central midfield on-loan ( Nuri Sahin) already scored once and has two assists ( in 5 league games ) from deep central midfield position .

  3. liverpool were once a decent club but times have changed, they now are a mid table club, only gerrard and suarez would make this current newcastle first team so why on earth would ba leave newcastle for anfield,it makes no sense at all,if he leaves it will be for man utd or chelsea or one of the top 2 in spain...

  4. Lol.... Johnson, agger, sahin,Allen would all get in too. Another thing at Liverpool he knows he would win something unlike Newcastle, Newcastle sell their best players (owner loves filling his pockets) and "mid table" we are 3 points behind you.

  5. Although i don't agree with Cren 100%, our owner hasn't sold any of our best players since AC which we benefited alot. Both teams are good enough and are comfortable top 6/7 teams but personally, i would rather Cabaye + Tiote over Allen + Sahin!

  6. Might as well take Ba. Liverpool will be playing in black n white soon.

  7. Why would Ba leave a club on the up to join one on the decline ?
I rate Ba, but I now question my judgement after comments by that prick Lawro. He doesnt like the Toon cos KK called his bluff and employed him to improve his defence. One of the mistakes KK made

  8. So Fabio Borini is exempt from criticism due to being played out of position, but Jordan Henderson is a "Kenny Dalglish flop"...

Ba has some nice stats but I don't think we will go for him.

  9. Eh Torres was he not one of your best players and you sold him, so do you not sell your best players?? Johnson would not get in the team, allen is not better then Cabeye, Toite so he would not get in the team, agger nah and Sahin who???........

If Ba leaves it will be too a big club

  10. Torres wasnt the old Torres we got 50 mil plus he was 27 also Johnson is better than your RB lol....even erinque would get in your LB spot. And agger would get in your CBs LOL.... It would be collincini and agger. And sahin he got 3 goals and 3 assist this year!

  12. Good one about Henderson and Borini...

  13. Has anyone heard BR mentioning to Carroll that he's still not welcome back to Melwood, basically saying he's not good enough! I absolutely agree with this, meaning it's even more important we snap up Ba.
Newcastle is a feeder club, with no longterm vision!

  14. That's pretty ignorant, both of you and BR. Pardew signed an 8 year deal, is that longterm-enough for you? Their main goal was to not lose any players over the summer and they achieved it.

As for Carroll, he deserves at least one chance. BR is up himself, he needs to start pulling off some wins.

  15. santon is better than johnson, collochini is better than agger, cabaye and tiote miles better than sahin,allen...simple

  16. Apologies Pete, a bit of a wind up merchant on my part with regards to the Toons having no longterm vision. I think Pardew deserves alot of credit for what he has done!
The bit about Andy Carrol is what I believe to be 100% true, apart from part of a season he hasn't demonstrated any signs of being world class. For Liverpool to give Andy Carrol a chance it means building the team around him, I'm afraid he's not worthy of that honour because he's not good enough! Essentially the benefits aren't there to be seen! If he could guarantee 20-30 goals per season ala then no doubt build around him or even if he showed the technical class of say RVP then yes. Hand on heart neither applies to Andy Carrol!

  17. It looks like he's got a little bit of attitude, and Newcastle has a replacement so in my opinion he would be willing to go and they would be willing to let him.
But if gets injured{and he often does get injured), we are doomed. I don't have faith in Borini-small number of Italians make it in epl, I sense new Aquillani kind of story.

  18. How many goals has Andy Carroll scored at West Ham?..................that would be zero!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Torres was useless for 6 months before we flogged him, now Chelsea can't wait to ditch him. You will lose at Anfield for the 8th season running, then it's all doom and gloom on Monday!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Carroll, Dalglish, Rafa, and others are History. let's move on...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Newcastle have a good team at the moment granted but if ba were to join lfc he'd have way more chances to convert than he gets currently. Fact. You've only got to look at the amount of shots that hit the post last season. With him as our target man we'd finish in the top 5.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Quite right onwards and upwards!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. if Johnson is such a gd right back where does Liverpool play him again this season? Santon is going to be better then Enrique... And the i like the way you are linked with all theses players.. When everybody knows Liverpool are skint, they cound not find 6million for Dempsey

  24. i would like us to take a leaf out of newcastle utds book and get a decent scouting system where WE find the gems, instead of just taking players out of newcastle utd. it is obvious that strategy doesn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You can't even spell your own player!
    Lol!
    Jokes on you! Toite hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Im fearing he will score some today then lfc fans might turn against him and wont want him hopefully he has a quiet day but i just cant see us getting a clean sheet newcastles squad looks way better than ours atm but a must win for us no exuses

  27. Partizan Beograd kicked Newcastle out of cl, and we had Fiorentina. It took a lot of time to recover, but both teams are on the right tracks- I can us squeezing London teams out of top 4 in couple of years.

  28. There's quite a debate at the minute, about the owners are out of cash, after spending over £100 million, last year. It would be very interesting to know, what their actual NET outlay is, since they took over Liverpool FC.

It would be interesting to know, if anyone, with time on their hands, like to do some research!.

  29. Oops, just found it, thanks to JK.

  30. While Ba's stats look good and he appears to be exactly what we need/lack, I am still wondering why no other club pays his relatively small fee to get him. All of those scouts out there must have found out something about him that we don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thats because he is demanding massive salary.. almost double his present one to leave Newcastle. He has adjusted well here and will not leave for an offer which isnt outrageous. He's just waiting on the new contract from Pardew

    ReplyDelete
  32. Go for Demba BA he is worth the risk

    ReplyDelete
  33. No 1 gives a crap about Newcastle. Ba would drop that shirt in a heartbeat to join Liverpool. Just like AC and Enrique. We could take your entire squad because you haven't won a thing in decades

    ReplyDelete
  34. Now now.. we did just finish above Liverpool. Not saying our club is better than Liverpool. But surely we deserve more respect than ^^

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cren you clearly have no idea about football i guarentee you have never even played football in your life, guarenteed you just bum fifa manager mode. I agree newcastle are a good side but there players aren't as good as the liverpool ones. Reina better then your gk, johnson, agger/skrtel/coates would all play cb over williamson, lb i give you that one, gerrard sahin better then cabaye n tiote even though cabaye is better then shelvey, allen and lucas... And sterling shits on guitieerez, whereas suarez is better then ba and pappis... So sit down and shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  36. look with lfc ba wont be the answer nor sturridge or walcott .... huntalarr the better option his knees are grand and would suits us better

    ReplyDelete
  37. He playing LB because erinque was nursing a injury... And you wish santon going to be better haha. And Liverpool skint? You deluded we spent 30 million on players plus 7 million on Rodgers how is that skint? Also we didn't wanna spend 6 million on a 29 yearold with his contract nearly up. And you wanted the French RB but you couldn't afford 7 million.when you only spent 8 million on Anita. Haha
