Confirmed: LFC make 'tempting' €20m offer for Bundesliga striker. Madness?

Former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart has confirmed that Liverpool have put in a huge offer for Hamburg team-mate Son Heung-Min.

Son has been linked with Liverpool several times over the last few months, and in a recent interview with German newspaper BILD, Van Der Vaart specifically referenced the Reds' interest in the South Korean striker. He said:

"It is tempting when Liverpool informs you of a twenty million offer, but he [Son] must stay here!

"He has the confidence, he plays regularly and can be better. For us he is a very important player"

VDV is Son's team-mate, so he is clearly in a great position to know if Liverpool have made a bid, and there's no reason to think he's not telling the truth.

Son - whose current contract expires in 2014 - is known for his dribbling skills, close control, and electric pace, and Hamburg coach Thorsten Fink believes his form in front of goal has drastically improved recently. He enthused:

“He practises shooting in training every day and it shows that doing more than others pays off.”

Speaking to Reporters yesterday, Son seemed to suggest that a move away from Germany is a distinct possibility. When asked about renewing his contract, he said:

"It’s very hard to say that I will renew at the moment"

That may be the case, but Son is hardly a prolific goalscorer. Last season, he grabbed 6 goals in 31 appearances for Hamburg, which is nothing to write home about. He's started this season strongly, but €20m for an inexperienced youngster? If the club have seriously offered that amount of money for an untested 20-year old then Brendan Rodgers seriously needs his head examined (!)

Or, is Son worth the money?

  1. I think Van der Vaart was using this figure as an example of the fees that Premiership clubs pay compared to German clubs (apart from Bayern of course) because I doubt that the directors at HSV discuss transfer offers with him. But twenty million euro would be a lot of money for an unproven player and probably not even close to the amount Arsenal will end up paying for him.

  2. Other players I would prefer. Talk of Cavani wanting to talk to Liverpool today. I personally don't see it happening but it would be immense.Maybe Suarez and Coates have convinced him :) Can you imagine Suarez and Cavani playing together like they do for Uraguay YEA BUDDY!!!!!

  3. I think Liverpool should definitely try to sign Son, he is an excellent player and would be great signing. For under 10m he would worth buying and would be much better signing than Sturridge. Seen him play many times and reminds me of hard working version of Berbatov.

  4. I think you're off your head Son.... :)

  5. I think, if they did offer this amount, that it's because he is an Asian player, and FSG being business minded as they are, would want to break into the Asian market selling Asian shirts to Asians... It's a money for money buy...

If he's as good as his coach says then that's bonus...

But I still say !!Bony!! or Cavani...
    Sturridge or !!Walcott!!

P.S. note the exclamations for my preferred buys...

  6. Cavani all the way to partner pistolero...

  7. OMD! Please let this be untrue! Not about the player but about the price. He is a talent but not worth £16M!

With £16M I am sure we could buy someone else!

  8. I think VDV wasn't talking about any factual sum here, he was just trying to say if a big club like Liverpool come in with a large offer it's hard to say no. If not this would be a ridiculous sum for Son, who while slightly underrated, is at best worth half that money and even then it wouldn't be the best move to make for Liverpool.

  9. Who says Directors have to discuss anything with him? Isn't it more likely that Son talked to him about it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Jeez, why are people obsessed with trying to discredit the obvious? VDV said: "It is tempting when Liverpool INFORMS you of a twenty million offer" - what do you think that means? Why would he use that language if Son has not been informed of the offer?

  11. Please don't raise out hopes up ;0P

  12. I'd be suuuuper happy with Cavani... but Boney just seems like the better buy for me... younger, similar experience, power, works hard... possibly the next Drogba

    Just a thought...

Although on the other side, Cavanni has built a partnership with pistolero and plays at the head of a 3 pronged attack...

Decisions decisions - I'm sure BR will make the right one though!

    YNWA!

  13. I have a feeling Cavani is coming to Liverpool, might be wrong but im hoping not.

  14. It's Huntelaar, Bony or Cavani!!!
No-one else would be good enough for Liverpool!

  15. Hmmmm duno mate. Would have to be a £40M plus!

Lavezzi who scored on average 9 goals a season went for £30 ish.

  16. Cavani hasn't played that all that great for Uruguay and often he has to play out wide, whereas Suarez often gets to play the main striker (although allowed to move, as he does here at LFC). But there isn't too many complaints as he is doing a role for the national team and he works hard, and the team has done well for most of Tabarez's reign (though I don't know about lately, don't seem to be doing too good in qualifications). On paper, Cavani as the spearhead and Suarez coming in from the flank sounds good but we haven't seen much of that in action for Uruguay, so I wouldn't say they have built a partnership in that regard or at least not a great one.

Brilliant out-n-out strikers, him and Falcao. Though don't see Cavani coming here. Big money.

  17. Well...Llorente would be nice too.

  18. LFC will easily make the money back in merchandising. There is nothing to loose here as far as the balance sheet is concerned. Standard Chartered have also been pushing this for a while now. I wouldn't be surprised if they have some financial input into this one... So as I said, nothing to loose. Plus, for anybody who has actually seen the kid play - he looks extremely talented and can play anywhere in a front three.

This is not your normal 20m transfer. Forget comparing him to other players we could get for the same price, because the simple fact is - Son will make LFC a bucket load of money no matter how good he is.

  19. We need a proven goal scorer. Real people have actually heard of proven goal scorers. Nobody has heard of Heung, ergo...not a proven goal scorer, ergo...not needed.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anybody who watches the Bundesliga - Believe me they have heard of Son. And last time I checked, Germans were 'Real People'..

And secondly, just because you have not heard of him before does not make him useless. Unless of course you have an unrivalled knowledge of football and call yourself the greatest scout on the planet?

    Didn't think so...

  21. So what's your opinion on Wilfred Bony then?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why u responding so agressively ?

  23. never listen to the "BILD" im from austria and trust me, everything there are rumors, i dont think we wouldnt pay such an high amout!

  24. I would take VDV's comments with a generous pinch of salt

  25. According to the Metro: http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/918573-heung-min-son-alerts-arsenal-and-liverpool-after-hamburg-quit-threat

it's £8M that will be enough to tempt Hamburg. Now, that ISN'T madness.

  29. I haven't seen him play much, to be honest.

Considering their contract situation, Llorente and Huntelaar seem to be possibility, i.e., reputable strikers but maybe within our finances.

Not sure on Huntelaar as he is mostly all about goals (not necessarily a bad thing in the right set up) but the guy has had a successful partnership with Suarez.

Llorente can be a effective target man that brings others into play well (whether it be on the floor or aerial) and plays in a team that has similar traits to Rodgers' perceived style (the pass-n-move, the high pressing, etc. Rodgers has already brought in two players who have played at teams with similar traits in Allen and Sahin (Dortmund under Klopp). He is also out of favour at Bilbao as he has problems with Bielsa, which could help us.

But the two strikers are in their late 20s. Whether FSG are willing to commit to such players who maybe cheap in transfer fee but may command more wages (as these players could wait 6 months and demand even bigger wages, like Arsenal are finding it hard to offload Chamakh as he was given considerable wages as he was a free transfer), remains to be seen. Last window, we tried for Dempsey, who only had a year left.

We'll probably end up with a younger player, who has 'potential future value' for FSG. Haven't seen him play much but Bony could be their kind of buy.

  31. Ltown - that is not me. It is a sad troll posing as me. I have a white background, that's how you can tell  if it's me or not.

  32. Fantastic, it has been CONFIRMED

  33. Pathetic line of reason. Had you heard of Cisse before? or Hernandez? Jelavic was mooted before the unmentionables got him, few had heard much if anything about him, we could certainly have done with his goals the last season or so. proven goalscorers cost the earth. You have to scout guys near the end of contracts or unearth a jewel.

Either will do, we just need them to score.

Ps Torres was a proven goalscorer before Chelsea paid £50m.....

  34. Simple really, you read a translation, I read the original interview in which he says "Ein Club wie Liverpool" as in "a club like Liverpool". Even though you most likely couldn't have known that, it would be wise to keep the factor of translation as well as the simple fact that people are often not precise in their phrasing of things when speaking, as compared to writing, in mind when calling something irrefutable.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What is your point? Saying 'a club like liverpool' is still referring to Liverpool. The essence of the quote is correct, i.e. Use of the word 'inform'. I can't see what point you're trying to prove here.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 20m a risky buy for an asian player.

    ReplyDelete
  37. He says "when Liverpool tells you". If they approached him directly that would be tapping up. Anyway, I think you're taking this quote to literally. When clubs sit down with players, they have already agreed terms with the club and they won't talk about the transfer fee with the player, they"ll discuss terms.

    ReplyDelete
  38. He's one of the most highly rated players in that league, plus he would appease the asian markets. he would make a good addition to a fast, skilful attacking trio of forwards.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Argh! Mad disappointed about the draw last night... anyhow, I remember seeing Bony play for Sparta Praha in the champions league a couple years back... young and inexperienced then, but powerful and causes defenses problems. He also has a sort of classy nonchalant-ness...

Someone who may fit BR's "arrogance on the ball" preference.

    ReplyDelete
  40. My point is that I don't see the quoted interview as conclusive proof that any such offer has been made. To that extent there's quite a difference between saying "Liverpool makes an offer" and "A club like Liverpool makes an offer".

    ReplyDelete
  41. What? Now every comment I make needs to be reviewed for approval just because I disagree with you and punch holes into your logic?

  43. Don't know much about Son but they can make some nice dividends on shirt sales and memoribillia but for me if i were to get a striker from Germany Lewandowski is the go.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Maybe the 20 million euros he is referring to is the contract that he would be offered not the transfer fee. 20 Million Euros is roughly 16.2 Million pound which on a 5 year contract would put the player on around 62k per week. This sounds about right in terms of the contract he would be offered.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Your first paragraph is absolutely 'spot on',and the second is true!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Haha, it's me I'm joking lads :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. anyone who watches bundesliga would know about Son.. he is on fire this season! he didnt score many goals in prev seasons because he was often injured and used as a sub.. also he plays on the wing mostly. he scored 6 goals out of 12 goals that HSV scored this season so far. now that is impressive

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes, there are hundreds of clubs like Liverpool. Jeez...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sorry...he's not big enough. If only everybody were as brilliant as their Wikipedia write-up. We already have this guy. His name is Suarez.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Cisse has been very quiet of late hasn't he? Perhaps he was a new phenom last year, but was easy to figure out and isn't as good this year because he's not as versatile as you think. Jelavic? Really? Is that the best you've got?

    ReplyDelete
  51. We have that guy already...his name is Suarez. We need a bigger guys with some muscle who is faster and quicker than AC was and has a quick, cannon-like release like AC never had.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with your comment. Just saying that Son is not a nobody like some of you are suggesting. I think it would be nice if LFC could bring in Huntelaar.
