At the end of October, Chiel Dekker, the Agent of PSV Eindhoven star Kevin Strootman, confirmed that defensive midfielder planned to leave Holland in the January transfer window. This was great news for a host of clubs (including Liverpool and Manchester United) following the talented 22-year old, and although Dekker confirmed again this week that a move to the Premier League is on the cards, Strootman himself has a different view.
In an interview with NUsport yesterday, Strootman admitted he doesn't want to leave PSV until he has won a major trophy, and seemingly ruled out a move in the January transfer window. He said:
"I have ambitions and I sometimes talk to my agent Chiel Dekker about clubs, but first I want to be a champion with PSV. A winter transfer abroad is not ideal. If a club really wants you then they come back in the summer. Not that I necessarily want to leave - hopefully, I'll play in the Champions League with PSV next season"
This seems to conflict with comments made by Strootman's Agent today, who said:
"All the top clubs in Europe know about Kevin, but a move to England next summer is his first priority and, yes, Manchester United and other big clubs in Europe have been in touch with me.”
Liverpool have been linked with Strootman in the past, and November 2011, Kenny Dalglish even sent Steve Clarke along to scout the player during Holland's 3-0 defeat to Germany.
With Lucas Leiva's continuing injury problems, the club arguably needs another dedicated defensive midfielder, and the Strootman would certainly fit the bill. Lucas is an excellent player for Liverpool, but if he continues to suffer injury problems, the Reds will needed a replacement.
Strootman is valued at £15m, but that seems optimistic for a 22-year old who's never played outside Holland. Looking at transfer fees for similar players over the last two years, I sincerely doubt that any club would pay more than £10m-£12m for the player at this stage.

oh well 10 to 12 million rules us out then another transfer bites the dust
ReplyDeletesorry forgot to put another reason he will not be joining us is ,like he says he has ambition
ReplyDeleteStrootman is a young, solid, very good midfielder who would beyond any doubt improve our squad. Sound like his agents wants a move more than he does though. He's smart not to move in January and he's right to say that clubs will come back for him if they really want him. For that money, I'd sign him if I had the chance.
ReplyDeleteForgot to add - closest thing to Gerrard I've seen since Stevie G himself
ReplyDeletehe is decent.but we need someone like bannan.or djemba djemba cos he wud be a cheaper option
ReplyDeletePSV paid thirteen million euro for him so if they will let him go, it will take quite a bit more than that. If we could sign him for fifteen million, we should rip thier arm off because they'd be underselling him.
ReplyDeletesorry mate where not spending money at the moment agree he would be a great signing but iam afraid hes out of our league
ReplyDeleteForm reading posts on here regularly I have noticed that Jason Carr is the most negative fan in the world. BR has been at the club a few months and is clearly making progress. FSG saved us from going bust and are much better than H&G. It take take to build.
ReplyDeletewhat if we sign british all over again...sturridge, walcott, ince, bent hahahah
ReplyDeletenot negative m8 just realistic wish they where things to be posative about
ReplyDeleteAh yes, at the moment. In fairness it makes perfect sense that we hold our hand on our wallet and try to get some loan signings in. First of all we need to recover financially from the money wasted by Dalglish. Second of all January transfers are always overpriced. Had we had all summer to sign a replacement for Torres, you can be sure we would not have paid 35 million for Carrol. You also need to keep in mind that Carrol went out on a loan and so did Spearing. When they're sold in the summer that will generate some money aswell. Most of the players that left in the summer went for free with Aquilani, Adam and Kuyt commanding a combined transfer return of around thirteen million. Yet we spent 30 million on new players. So I'm sure we'll see something similar in the summer window. Probably with a bit more cash to spend on less players.
ReplyDeleteSome people are just more fed up than others mate. If we're honest, we haven't seen much progress ever since Evans left. Sure enough we won quite a few trophies but seeing as most people don't care about the carling cup or whatever it's called this year, that is limited to one Champions League, one UEFA cup and two FA cups. Which all in all are trophies many other clubs are jealous of and we all celebrated winning them but a meagre return if you consider the amount of money spent on players to revitalize the club. Liverpool has slipped into obscurity over the last two decades more than it has been making headlines and those of us who remember when it was different have a hard time dealing with that on its own but it's made even worse by the constant false dawns, boardroom fights, manager's excuses and failing upon failing player. It's just hard to see the silver lining sometimes because the clouds are so very dark. But come matchday or when someone says anything negative about our club, we'll all be making noise because no matter how often we've been disappointed, we love our club still. In time, if Rodgers gets it right, people's faith will be restored and they will be big enough to admit they were wrong to doubt him in hindsight even though their feeling was justified at the time.
ReplyDeleteThere is a middle ground here you know? There is nothing wrong with buying British. Sterling is British. Allen is British. Dalglish's policy only showed how he was stuck in the eighties and very little knowledge or appreciation of players outside of England. Maybe he felt that he needed players who knew the league to be successful. Whatever it was, it didn't work. That said, I wouldn't mind a Leighton Baines on our left back or a Nathan Dyer in our squad. It's just about getting the best players, not about where they were born. One should never sign a Downing over Mata but neither should one sign a Veron over a Lampard.
ReplyDeletejason, im honest. please stop writing your opinions here, everybody hates you pesimism and its just anoying to read your brainless comments against Rodgers and FSG. Please go to chelsea and idolize abramovic. Hes your messias bro
ReplyDeleteAnyone who has little footballing brain would know that British players are overrated, overpriced and 90% of them waste/no value for money...!! South American/ Spanish, Belgium, African, et al have much better percentage of success, value for money, less wages, less transfer fee, etc...!! How's Wales, England, Scotland national team doing compared to Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, Germany? Look at Adam Johnson for eg; after all the promise he showed last year he cost hefty transfer fee for Sunderland and also doing miserably currently. Allen you named is above average player, out of his depth in last 5-6 matches and 15mn for him??? when you can get someone like Sissoko/M'villa for a similar price.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I like some British players as you mentioned Lampard along with Stevie G, Rooney (again overrated but good) and among current players I only like Sterling and Bale not even OX.
IN the video hes great. But dont forget, dutch defenders are the worst on the world. We have enough midfielders, and even more comming from the u-teams (i think coady is the best exemple). I would really spend my money for other areas of the pitch
ReplyDeleteI mentioned Strootman on this site earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteOne of the board members at PSV is also a mad LFC fan and has been dropping less than subtle hints we should sign him for the past 3 years. He echoed your view - the closest thing to Gerrard.
Trouble is, we usually tend to look a gift horse in the mouth, or wait 'til the price rises which it surely will as United have watched him a number of times.
Pity we never pounce when we have the chance.
DREAM:-
ReplyDeleteFSG should throw 100mn and get Cavani -35mn, Moutinho - 20mn, Isco - 15mn, Demba Ba - 7mn, Tello - 7mn, Mertens - 10mn.
Still you save 6mn, can spent on Full Back - Debuchy ...
All of them young and can play for years to come...!! League winning team in just 100mn :D
Eric, I used to argue that January transfers are always overpriced and that it's the worst time to go shopping, but then someone named a few of our January signings which include Agger, Skrtel, Suarez. I wouldn't consider any of them overpriced. As for paying 35m for Carroll, well, we wouldn't have paid that hadn't it been a few hours before the transfer window shut.
ReplyDeleteFSG payed 100m once so ;)
ReplyDeleteOnly if we purchased above mentioned players instead....!! DARN KDDDDDDDD
ReplyDeleteI thought you were busy doing your exams??
ReplyDeleteYou'll regret wasting your life on LFC, son.....
;)
That's what I tell the people around me when they call me negative for pointing out the environmental issues we face. I consider myself realistic when it comes to that. Whether that assertion is true or that of the others can only be proven over time. Just as whether you are realistic or pessimistic. Guess if we are both right in claiming we are realistic, our club will go down and mankind in it's entirety too. Both are not the best things to happen, but if I had to make a choice then it would be you being right and me being wrong.
ReplyDeleteExam on 1st Dec, I have got more than 48 hours remaining. Besides, I know how am gonna score this exam, already preparing for re-attempt on June. lol
ReplyDeleteWell a good player is a good player regardless of his pricetag or the moment you sign them but I'm sure we could have paid less for Suarez in a summer window.
ReplyDeleteThat part about regret, am thinking the same but can't help it as of now may be after few years of maturity.
ReplyDeleteThat was my point though. Even if I agree with the fact that 90% of all British players are no value for money, as you say, it still leaves 10% who are. The advantage of signing, for example, Baines over someone like Felipe Luis is that the former has already shown he can perform at Premiership level. Like I said, there is a middle ground there. A buy British policiy is as silly as a buy non British policy. The only right policy is the buy good players for good money policy.
ReplyDelete"Dutch defenders are the worst in the world" - not sure where that came from but I think you will find there are very few Dutch defenders lining up for Dutch eredivisie clubs every weekend...
ReplyDeleteA buy non British policy is 'less' silly than buy British policy. IMO Enrique is as good as Baines if not better. Just my opinion, I don't rate Baines or OX as highly as other do.
ReplyDeleteGood post again.
ReplyDeleteWe all love LFC (even Jaimie !!!) and we all want them to succeed. It just gets frustrating when we get so near (Athens, 2nd in the League etc) and then slip away again. It's always a case of what might have been. We have a habit of never quite fulfilling our potential, and sometimes, just sometimes, it does get very hard not to lose the faith.
For a lot of people, Liverpool's fortunes shape their week. I remember when H&G were trying to oust Rafa and get in Klinsmann I felt I had to defend my club every day at work, for what seemed like a year.
And sometimes it wears you out.
Some games I've been to I just wanted to tear out my hair : Kozma fncking up a corner against Chesterfield and standing there giggling only for them to race upfield and score, the pre-match kickabout down at Stamford Bridge one night when David James thought he didn't need any practice so took shots with Redknapp in goal (what a pro), one-nil down at Coventry in the last minute and Babb (or maybe Walters) hoofs the ball into a building site behind the goal.... And every time I still defended them when non-LFC fans derided them.
Half time against Wigan was my nemesis. I was bored shitless and frozen. So I slagged off BR, which is something I have never done before. And I regret it. Because he wants the same as the rest of us.
I just hope he can do it without Sturridge or Bent.....
Wonderful post Eric.
ReplyDelete* all the defenders in the dutch league
ReplyDeleteVertonghen
ReplyDeletelol you well pass it easy
ReplyDeletespot on mate if any none lfc fan dares critisise lfc i will swear blind were the best team in the world its only because this is a lfc site that i dare speak what i think is the truth and believe me the truth hurts
ReplyDeletesorry m8 fu"k the enviroment just give me a premiership in gerrards cerear
ReplyDeleteim honest m8 and i don,t give a flying f"ck what you think i know this will suprise you but i dont think your opinion counts for much in my opinion i have posters on hear who i get regular comments of some agree some disagree but i try to stay friendly with them but for you i will gladly make an exception
ReplyDeletehuntalaar would be a fantastic signing small fee due to the length of his contract but fsg and rodgers would have to pull out all the stops to convince him of there vision for the future
ReplyDeleteI had the choice : the European Cup Final or staying at home revising for my 'O' levels.
ReplyDeleteAint hindsight a wonderful thing? !!
The silliest of all was a buy-Protestant policy......
ReplyDeleteEh, Rangers fans? !! :)
Haha..!! indeed..
ReplyDeletehindsights great but the european cup final is magical
ReplyDeleteErrrrm.
ReplyDeleteIt SHOULD have been the trip of a lifetime.
But it was the 1985 Final.
lol
ReplyDeleteThere is always buy Basque at Athletic :-) Although considering there are only two million basques, they produce some amazing players!
ReplyDeleteThe Dutch league is one where, when you do well, young players get picked up before they hit twenty. That affects the overall quality of that league in every area of the pitch. I don't think I can think of one quality player in the Dutch league between the age of 25 and 30 ie his prime. And who can blame them really? The pay is better abroad, more people come to the games so the atmosphere is better and in most cases except for the Premiership, the weather is better too! The Dutch league, in general, is at a lower level, agreed.
ReplyDeleteFck the environment? I hear that a lot, though never from geoscientist or environmental engineers or the like.
ReplyDeletei am niether lol
ReplyDeleteBut you are a dad of three kids. Think about them and their future.
ReplyDeletelol what was the other post you replyed on cannot find it
