'Fantastic' £50m striker to Anfield? Brendan Rodgers responds to speculation...

Liverpool face Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend, and Fernado Torres will be hoping he can finally break his goalscoring duck against his old club. Many Reds fans would love to see Torres back at Anfield, and with Chelsea almost certain to sign a new striker in January, the Spaniard could soon find himself surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. Are Liverpool interested in bringing him back though?

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was asked if there was any truth to the rumour that the Reds wanted to bring Torres back to Anfield. He responded:

"I have never heard that before.

"Certainly from the outside, Fernando Torres did a terrific job at Liverpool. Certainly in his first 18 months he was fantastic.

"He decided to move on, so I can't really comment on Fernando Torres"

Rodgers then declined to comment on a follow-up question about Torres, and went on to (over)praise Luis Suarez once again.

One thing is for sure: Liverpool fans would love to have Torres back. I conducted a survey a few months ago asking the question, and the results were emphatic:

* 10,000 people (approx) have taken part so far.

* 74% of participants voted for a Torres return.

Even if Chelsea sign another top striker, I can't see them selling Torres to a rival club. In any event, the price would probably be prohibitive anyway.

Personally, I would love to see Torres return, and a partnership with Suarez is a mouth-watering prospect.

Torres - who has 7 goals and 1 assist for Chelsea so far this season - is desperate to beat Liverpool this Sunday. He told The Telegraph:

"The first step is winning against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. They are really looking forward to the game because they need points, they need to win these kinds of big games to get confidence. But we also need them so hopefully the three points can stay at Stamford Bridge."

  1. so you want him to partner Suarez even though you want Suarez to go? I don't know what Suarez is going to have to do to get your approval he's scoring more but it still is not good enough

  2. I'm with Rodgers on that one. Torres gave us some good memories then decided to jump ship. He will be in our history books forever, but he's in our past. Let's look to the future.

  3. There must be something in the water. It's not that hard to understand:

    * I have issues with Suarez, but I also know he's a great player.

    * I've praised him many times, and during the Evra situation, I defended hi in greater detail/depth than any other website/news provider.

Why can't people get this into their heads: I do not have favourites; I don't engage in hero worship like most fans, and I always prioritise the club over the individual.

Suarez already has my 'approval' - that doesn't mean I won't criticise him when it's warranted.

You and others constantly try and force others to share your unwavering positive view of Suar3z, and when they don't, you go on the attack.

Get over it. If you can't handle fair criticism of players then, with all due respect, you and others need to grow up.

  4. Whoever made up the rumour of Torres coming back to Anfield is a complete i d i o t.

First of all, how much would Chelsea ask for a player which they paid 50mil two seasons ago and surely his wages is through the roof so please can we put this rumour to bed now.

  5. Jaimie- when are you finishing your fantasy novel?

  6. Steven Gerrard has also said Torres is one of the top strikers. And Torres has recently said positive things about Liverpool. Seems to be in the right direction.

  7. Mr. kanwar it is not easy to grasp you. are you really a liverpool fan? you alwats criticise. never finding anything good with the team. a real fan will never do what you do.

  8. Kanwar, why dont you post my messages? I simply want to know who would be your first choice XI with the formation of your preference of a Liverpool side from the last 15 years?

  9. your headlines are dreadful kanwar, you suck people in to make them hate you

  10. You do not have to idolize players to give them their credit. It's fine to criticize, but criticism with no praise just makes you a cynic.

  11. Jaime, Well you are never going to (over) praise Suarez are you? You were campaigning against him before he even joined the club, calling him a cheat and allsorts!!!

I'm happy that he is doing the business on the pitch and is ramming the taunts of his detractors rightly back down their throats. He must be the most talented forward at our club since John Barnes. Lets build the team around him and get players in to complement him.

I'm looking forward to him scoring at the Bridge tomorrow.

    COME ON YOU REDS!!

  12. For a team struggling to score goals on a regular basis buying a £50 million pound striker who is STUGGLING to score goals, it doesn't make sense. Mata, hazard, and oscar cannot help him. Imagine downing and cole supplying him LOOOOOOL that is funny.

  13. jaimie its fair criticism in your eyes but people think different some others myself included react to your constant attacks on suarez because of the fact it is constant whats more annoying is that posters get barred for there views whilst you can still constantly carry on regaurdless ps its not sniping hero worship or any other of the usual undermining comments that you normally put to other posters who dare to disagree with you on a regular basis

  14. No thanks to Torres. Appreciate the service but he is in a right state and been in it for a long time. Doesn't look the same. Might score few goals here and there but his overall performances, he is a shadow of his old self still. Shudder to think what those three players (Hazard, Oscar and Mata) behind him could do with Falcao ahead of them.

  15. Fantastic !!! U got that spot on !!! Loved him but he's history. If he went for 50million pounds, We can't take the same, let alone lesser for Suarez. If we have players like Mata and Hazard, El Pistolero will be camping in opponents penalty box farting goals while chewing apples !!!

  16. If Torres can't score against a Liverpool side as bad as the present one, he might as well hang up his boots. My guess is he will score and Chelsea will win. But I'm sure Liverpool will be 'terrific', just like always.

  17. Why do you delete criticism of your opinions

    ReplyDelete
  18. the formation Rodgers plays doesnt have striker partnerships unfortunately!

    ReplyDelete
  19. chelsea would let him go for 15 mill, just cos its good for the books. if they would stick out his contract it will cost them 30 mill for a player that isn't playing to well.

  20. This is the most consistent (and deliberate) misrepresentation of the truth, and it usually comes from snipers like yourself, whose only intent to shit-stir.

I don't delete criticism of my views; only an idiot would think that's true. There are over 150,000 comments on this site, the majority of which disagree with me.

They stay live because they are *civil*

Any post that contains insults, derogatory comments or deliberate misrepresentation of my views is deleted.

I'm so sick of idiots like you who deliberately twist everything.

    PS. You're banned. Again.

  21. Quite apart from the fact that the idea that 'criticism with no praise makes you a cynic' is a tenuous non-sequitur, you should get your facts right.

I have praised Suarez many times, but to acknowledge that would've support your 'argument'.

  22. What are you on about? You haven't posted any previous messages, and there's nothing pending/deleted. First choice XI from the last 15 years:

    ------------------- Dudek

    Babbel ----- Henchoz --- Hyypia ---- Riise

    ---------------------- Hamann

    McManaman ------- Gerrard ------------ Berger

    -------------------- Litmanen

    -------------------- Torres

    Formation: 4-1-3-1-1

  24. if the owners carry on how they did in the summer, then one of the best players to ever watch in the premiereship will have no choice but to leave.
man utd have 3 players better than torres so whats all the fuss about, we had him in his best years, lets move on and find the next up and coming one and hope the owners show some ambition

  25. i agree, the past is the past, but.... Torres and Suarez up-front?? mouth-watering is an understatement

  26. I've been reading Mr Kanwars feeds for almost 2 years now I think, may be its a year anyway, When I first came across it I thought he was an undercover manc, but it turns out that Mr Kanwars criticism is often correct, although (Like Rodgers praise) exaggerated imo. nonetheless His blog runs on the readers, that's us, and our thoughts, and often to get people thinking or debating you need a devils advocate which is not a bad thing. He gets you to think about things from different perspectives. His comments might be what he really thinks or just a cover to start a different thought process or debate. It's called open minded-ness. His comments is like all good food. You take it with a pinch of salt. Everyone should try it some time.

  27. I know it's you opinion but I would like to know the reason as to why you would leave out Jan Molby and John Barnes? Just for interests sake? IMO Jan Molby is (was) a better controller of the game than Alonso. at least

    ReplyDelete
  28. John Barnes is my favourite ever player, so he would always get into any best XI lFC team for me. He's not in this team because the poster said 'Last 15 years', and Barnesy left in 1997, which is 15 years ago. Same applies to Molby: he left in 1996, which is also outside the timeframe.

  29. Kanwar,

    I like your XI

    BUT...

Please explain how Alonso does not feature as a starting XI player?

PS- Have you ever thought of writing a novel?

  33. These are jus paper talk, before a big game to stir Torres into putting up a good show to score against Liverpool. The opposite happened before Torress left for Chelski. Remember Torres playing his best game against them at anfield and scoring twice infront of Roman Abrahmovic. The russian was convinced to buy the player for 50 million pounds. Now the media or the player's agent is trying to move him back to Liverpool. My heart says take him back, but my head say don't. Just think, how successfull have players been, when they have come back to the club. Ian Rush left for Juventus and came back after one seasn. But he was never the same player for Liverpool again.Liverpool even sold Aldridge to accomodate Rush, but it was a mistake. Robbie Fowler was used as a substitute when he came back. So the wise move would be to forget the past and move on, get new players in. Those who jump ship must never come back again. End of story.

  34. dudek i recall had one world class game, we can all guess which one, reina despite the last 2 seasons has been the best since bruce

  35. Jaimie,

I call my closest ones by their surname so please do not take offence. Apologies if you have thought I was doing it to be derisive.

So why no Alonso? I really rate him over the last 15 years and Litmanen was not fit to lace Suarez's boots so would not agree with that. Your Back 4 was pretty spot on though.

Would you take Torres back for 20m and would you pair him with Suarez?

Cecil (Who do you have me mixed up with?)

  36. balotelli is not happy at man city he killed euro suarez and him upfront Wow and would love torres back for sure

  37. Will said Anteater, he only did well at the start For us and then dropped his head. The truth is, Torres was a one hit wonder and the fact Chelsea are still after another stricker speaks volume. It isn't that his at the end of his career like Drogba was, it's just that his passed his prime. Van Persie and that's a stricker. Torres will score the odd goal every know and again but never golden boots winner. For the amount of money he receive, I think even I can match the number of goals his on.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anelka, Drogba, Mata, Oscar, Hazard etc all played/ play alond side Torres and he still isn't taking the league by storm. What makes you think with Suarez he'll begin to fire. The guy is NOT what you think
He is. For god sake I'd be more worried about Darren Bent and his not even half of the price tag. Wise up people!

  39. Fowler over torres or suarez any day!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Off the record jaimie would you do a straight swap with suarez for torres no money involved?

    ReplyDelete
  41. 50 million doesn't buy you much in the January window. I see elsewhere Rodgers saying we're going to be spending bif in January. Have FSG learned nothing while they've been here???

  51. Yeah, you're right, there's been a shedload of dross (!). My worst XI for the last 15 years:

    --------------------------- Luzi

    Kromkamp --- Kvarme ------- Degen --- Dossena

    Nunez --- Zenden ---- Leonardshen ---- Downing

    -------------- Dundee --- Carroll

There are so many duds over the last 15 years that this line-up is subject to change (!)

1.5m for Sean Dundee? I still can't believe that! What's yours?
