'He's the best in the world!' - Wilshere hails 'top' Liverpool FC star...

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere returned to the England squad last week after 17 months on the sidelines with injury. Things have massively changed on the international front since the 20-year old last got involved with an squad, but some things never change, and according to Wilshere, Steven Gerrard's quality is one of them.

In an interview with the official FA website on Thursday, Wilshere vited Gerrard as a major role model, and someone to 'look up to' adding:

"For me he [Gerrard] is one of the best midfielders in the world, he still is, and he has been at the top of his game for eight to nine years.

"He talks to me, he talks to me on the pitch and it's the first time I've played with him and it's a pleasure to play with someone like that.

"I think any young English midfielder would look up to someone like him, especially his long passing, his vision, and everything."

It's hard to accept, but the sad reality is that Gerrard - one of Liverpool's greatest ever players - will probably never experience the joy of winning a league title with his hometown club.

The closest he came was the 2008-9 season, and at the launch last month of his new book 'My Liverpool Story', Gerrard insisted that he he still feels frustration over the way Liverpool missed out on the title that year:

"Some of the games I look back on with frustration and regret are the ones we drew at home which cost us the title [in 2008/09 when LFC finished four points behind United].

"There is no two ways about it, if there was no Roman Abramovich or the guy [Sheikh Mansour] who bought Manchester City I'd have two or three league titles sitting here now"

Is Gerrard 'still' one of the best midfielders in the world though? In the Premier League, undoubtedly, but in the world? I'm not so sure...

  5. 'I'm not so sure.'....Noone gives a flying fart what you think man. Try writing objectively like a serious reporter. Id take a players view over a journalist regardless of whether or not its something i want to hear. They are the experts. Give credit where its due and listen to your elders when they say if youve nothing good to say, say nothing at all. Cheers.

  6. He's still a top player but he's not the force he was back in his twentys which is only natural giving his age and injurys

  7. He isnt quite the player he used to be, but he is a legend, and will be no matter what! Plus, even though he might not be as good as he once was, he can still inspire those around him.
A true leader! and should have been England captain all along.

  9. You've conveniently miss-quoted Wilshere - he didn't say he's the best.... he's one of the best!

  10. If Gerrard is 'one of the best' it still means he is the best; he just shares that billing with several other players.

  11. Not really. 'The best' for a single person denotes the best singular. One of the best denotes part of a group. It was a bit of an unnecessary tabloidesque 'amendment' that I'm sure was more accidental than by design.

  12. IMO Stevie G is a wonderful player and if he was surrounded by world class players such as Real or Barca I have no doubt he would have been even better but kudos to him to sticking to our club.

I would not necessarily call him " the best midfielder in the world" but certainly among the top 30. Although Zidane was a beast I still don't rate him as the worlds best but certainly one of the worlds best.
