LFC target another exciting South American attacker. Worth a bid...?

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is not taking any chances in the Europa League tonight, and he's named a strong, experienced side to take on Guus Hiddink's Anzhi team.

There are three changes from the XI that beat Reading on Saturday: Allen, Suso and Sterling are rested ahead of this weekend's Merseyside derby, and in their place come Downing, Shelvey and Assaidi.

Samed Yesil is on the bench, and hopefully we'll get to see him in action at some point in the game.

FULL LINE-UP

Jones, Wisdom, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Gerrard, Sahin, Shelvey, Assaidi, Downing, Suarez.

SUBS

Gulacsi, Henderson, Carragher, Allen, Sterling, Suso, Yesil.

Anzhi Line Up:

Gabulov, Agalarov, Samba, Carlos, Zhirkov, Shatov, Gabulov, Boussoufa, Carcela-Gonzalez, Eto'o, Smolov

Commenting on the line-up former Reds star Jason McAteer observed:

"I think he [Rodgers] has really got a lot of respect for this team. They're no mugs; they know how to play football, and they've scored 17 goals in this competition.

"Eto'o is world class, and it's a team that wants to go places. It's very strong Liverpool team, and it reflects the task at hand."

  4. I would prefer to have a more defensive minded midfielder playing for cover to the back 4 considering their goal threat. Very attack minded team. Hopefully Yesil gets 20 mins.

  14. Yeah you make a good point. Liverpool has suffered for a long time from a lack of real depth in the squad. We are no less ambitious a team than we were last year and we have many irons in the fire. We got ass raped by Arsenal because our players were burnt out. We have a lot of inexperienced players who are trying to make their mark on the big stage this season for the first time, and this puts us at a disadvantage when we have many big fixtures in a short period of time to play. Rodgers has his hands full when it comes to team selection for big fixtures. Our coach started to rebuild the team in the summer and you can see that there is still a lot that needs to be done to get the proper cover for all the positions needed. Obviously playing our one only recognized senior striker in many games repeatedly is equivalent of spinning the roulette wheel in a Vegas casino and emptying your bank account and betting all your money on black. Everybody is sweating bullets right now hoping that nothing happens to Suarez. Never was a player more important on a team than he is to us right now.

  16. I've always thought Stevie G was a player who looks exceptional on youtube but is prone to lapses over 90mins. Tonight he was tactically tuned into the game for the full 90, worked his socks of and was easily our most calming influence. Stevie looks to be on the brink of having a second lease of life under BR.....hmmm so you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... ;)

  17. Star in the making. Flair, pace, intelligence and perseverance all the ingredients that have been ignored for 10-15 years since Barnesy.

  18. Hmm...ok win..!! we need to be more clinical...

    1) Suarez tries too much sometimes may be fatigue. He wasn't mentally stable today either...he needs rest but he probably won't, at least until January. I think if he keeps his head cool and keep it simple without too much of trickery he will score all those missing opportunities....(e.g. Norwich)...I recommend some kind of mental exercise for him. lol

    2) What's wrong with him? Too many passes given away again today. I am not sure he is a fan of tika tika football. He is technically better than most British players. Either he should play just behind the striker or he should play as an Anchor man...today he was everywhere...!! I think there will be a headache for BR to assign a particular role for sahin, shelvey and stevie....

    3) Play downing on left flank...or don't play him at all.

    4) Sterling-Suarez swapping positions time to time is brilliant. They got a good chemistry there.

    5) Wisdom is right up there with Kelly, if not better. He is flawless. No errors AT ALL.

    6) Downing scored 2 goals and 1 assist in his limited appearances in Europa so far....looks hungry.

    7) Get clinical guys, get clinical...!!

  19. 'he is flawless'....what next? label him as the next Maldini....****ing hell, some people and bloody hyping

  20. Wisdom unfortunately is Titus Bramble in the making if he's not careful. Wants just a little bit too much time on the ball and puts us under pressure. Needs to improve his touch and awareness but he's young he still has the potential to improve.

I don't agree he is anywhere near as good as Kelly.

  21. Now for Moyes..............

  22. I think he likes to keep the ball, the way BR likes. He is not as prone to errors as Johnson, Skrtel, Enrique, Carra...he looks good.

  23. I really thought he gave away quite a few balls but also made some remarkable passes. He didn't score today with the opportunities he had. He wasn't at his best at all today.

  24. Odd reply but erm no, I'm alright thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  25. you're right his passing wasn't remarkable, BUT his tactical discipline was immense. When he lost it he was back in place, when he was going forward he wasn't gung ho. This isn't the Stevie we have come to know and love, We now look to have a more responsible Stevie G on our hands who is actually listening to instructions and showing faith in his teammates.

  28. brad jones one cross collected very well one shot dealt with . 2 clean sheets on the bounce . why would anyone want reina back for the derby??? the man is a liability sell in jan !!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. just another point the rusky was at anfield even in the tunnel mixin with the players . were our owners even at the game!

  30. 6 games in and I can't remember Wisdom putting us under pressure at all, whether it be due to a poor touch or a lack of awareness.

Btw it's pretty funny/hypocritical that nobody is talking about Kelly not being cut out for the Premiership, despite him picking up injuries at a rate even greater than that of the long forgotten Alberto Aquilani...

  31. Just a case of ppl seeing what they want to see I guess. Gerrard hasn't been as bad as ppl have been making out all season, and wasn't particularly good tonight.
He was better than either of Shelvey or Sahin however.

  32. The most important thing for me at the moment, is that we are keeping clean sheets. Is that due to Jones or just that we have finally sorted out the silly problems. Im not sure. But I dont think Jones should just be dropped because Reina is fit again. Make Reina earn his place.
